They had a ton of ink and fountain pens but the staff were way too busy showing others the pens so we skipped it. They had a fairly good selection of expensive Japanese notebooks: (including my favorite , Midori) the small, fat, grid-lined kind with silky smooth, thin, beige paper. $72 for a two-page-per-day planner. $37 for one-page-a-day. Rhodia hardcover: $45! A Hobonichi Techo with cover: $128! You know, I can remember when a hardcover 400-page Moleskine - for $25 - was crazy expensive for a notebook... (they did have one of those, but only in bright red.) I liked how they had a sample of many of the notebooks out. Thank you for doing this. There were some cute stickers but they were really expensive... They had all these little toolboxes by the door which I guess you're supposed to use as a pencil box?... I'm not sure. It was a little unclear... It was fun to look, and a bit inspiring, but ultimately too rich for my blood. read more

I have been a customer of Dromgoole's since moving to Houston in 2005. The service, selection and value are superb. If you want any type of writing instrument, I believe they will find it for you. I have bought new and used Mont Blanc 's from them and received better service than any pen store in the world. they have great stationary and gift items. Should be anyone's first stop for a business, graduation, birthday, wedding or any special occasion gift! When my favorite mont blank pencil broke, I was able to get the same pencil delivered the next day to my office. I stumbled across this place in West U by accident. I was looking for Gift wrapping accessories and for some reason Google brought me to this location. I am so happy they did because it was a Saturday and they were having a pen sale. My boyfriend was starting a new job and I thought it would be wonderful to get him a specialty pen before he started his new job. As a congratulations gift. I was shown the different types of pens available I got to write with them and to know that I can get refills close to home for any ink is really nice. I chose one of the Visconti pens from their van Gogh collection. They wrapped the Van Gogh pen in nice packaging for him as well. It's definitely a memorable pen with a memorable experience. The discount pricing on Saturdays is the same pricing they have online if you purchase the pen online. If you're looking for a bargain definitely come on Saturday to get the best possible price for a namebrand pen. read more

Someone in Austin told me to drive three hours to Houston, just to look at a small store selling pens. Well, not "just pens", just like this place is not a "stationary store", but a writing tool destination! Worth a drive/flight from anywhere if you are a Fountain Pen geek (or just curious). If you have any worries about walking in there and getting too excited by the "Ink Bar" (Like a coffee shop), the pens, or the writing accessories and then spending WAYYYYYY more MONEY than you expected, well, then, you are right to worry! Buyer beware. If you never run into an issue with your pen, disregard my review, but if you ever run into an issue with your pen, (and I'm not talking about a pen that you spent $5-$10 on), I'm talking about Pens that you've spent +$150 on a single pen. Luckily, I've only had an issue with one of my pens. I know if I run into any issues with any of my other pens I've purchased here, I won't waste the drive to this shop again. Really disappointed with this place. I moved to Houston a year ago and found this quaint pen shop. Finally making some decent disposable income, I decide to buy some nice fountain pens. As you can see from my credit card statement (see my posted photo as proof), I think I would consider myself a loyal customer. Even though the location charges more than what I could purchase the same item for online, I'm helping a local business and I believe I'll receive better service since I'm buying from a "real person" (not meaning to downgrade all the folks running online stores, just saying, that doing business the old fashioned way, by actually talking to someone face to face and buying a product from them, and returning to buy more products as a repeat customer has some worth). Or at least I thought. When you spend at least $150 on a single pen and buy multiple pens from the same shop vs buying online, I hate to sound unreasonable when I say, I kind of expect that if I run into a problem with one of the pens, I'd get some assistance. Otherwise I would have bought the same product for less online, from someone who doesn't have a a brick and mortar shop. One of the pens I had purchased there was obviously bleeding too much ink. The owner compared it to a new one and agreed that there was an issue. Then recommended, to pay $50 to have to looked at by someone (no guarantee it would be fixed) or pay $80 to get a new nib. So essentially making a pen I had recently purchased there a $230 pen vs a $150 pen... Didn't want to stand behind his product, didn't offer any discount. I paid full price for the pen when I bought it, and I guess would pay full price for a replacement tip for the pen. I informed him of my dissatisfaction to no avail. So now I'm like screw local businesses, looks like I was wrong, there really is no benefit in doing repeat business with local business when I can buy for less online to begin with and get the same level of service. Although Dromgooles fooled me once, they won't fool me again. I'm not going to buy another item from this location and will recommend everyone I know to their fountain pens from a different company. read more

I'm a big fan of Lamy products that they carry almost entire Lamy product line , but they got some really nice and fancy fountain pens with over 1000 different type of inks. I love this store and somewhat regularly stop by even just to browse or hang out since I luckily live close by and every time I go, I almost always leave with something. There are a few parking spots in front of the store but they get filled up quickly, especially during their busy hours (after 2 pm on Saturday's though it can differ) so I usually go for the parking garage around the corner (free for 2 hours). They sell everything from fountain pens and roller balls to stationery to ink (there's an entire wall dedicated to them), special occasion cards, and even EDC knives. I mainly stick to fountain pens, ink, and fountain pen friendly paper (note: if they don't have it in stock ask and they may be able to order it on their next run). No, they may not have the lowest prices but I value the service and being able to hold something rather than look at a photo. If you're lucky, you might be spontaneously given a small discount. They also have a lovely bulldog named Sheldon. :) My toddler loves him. Though their ink selection can be somewhat overwhelming, they have two binders full of ink swatches that you can browse through and Dillon, the self anointed Ink Sommelier, would be more than happy to help. He's quite good (I'm rubbish at seeing the subtle differences between two inks of the same color) and a big reason I buy so much because I have a hard time resisting inks and he's always (ALWAYS) full of encouragement and recommendations. He can also help with any minor issues with nibs/writing, so keep that in mind. To be honest though, just let anyone know and they'd be happy to help and point you in the right direction. I love how they do let you hold and write with the pens (a good amount of them preloaded with assorted ink) to make sure you like it. For the more expensive pens (especially the ones in the cases on the right), you can always ask and out they come and you can dip them to try them out and they don't try to pressure you into buying them. Walking into Dromgoole's is like my little escape. I definitely recommend it here! Tip: they often have refreshments/food on Saturdays. read more

Really, really cool store if you are a pen enthusiast. You could spend an hour there and not look at every pen. They also have an amazing selection of ink, as well as fine quality paper products. Customer service is adequate. My one suggestion, not a complaint per se, is that there is always random stuff lying around the store on the counters and floors. Things like boxes and paperwork that belong in the backroom. I find it distracting from the amazing products and selection. It's very cluttered for as many folks work there. I was in the market for a really well made/nice greeting card, and I was looking around Houston for something that was better than most of the cardboard only cards in most stores. I stumbled upon Dromgoole's and was very happy that I did! Dromgoole's is a stationary store that really has anything that you'd be looking for. Most of their products, from letters to desk accessories to fountain pens, are of high quality and good variety. Even for a place that mostly focuses on more formal stationary, I was able to find a nice selection of greeting cards with pop-up figures within them! A very surprising but exciting find. Another great point to this store is the customer service. I was helped my one of the employees working there, and any question I had was answered promptly in a friendly manner. I felt taken care of, and I saw that others there were being taken care of just as well at the same time I was. The only issue that I would give this place is that, for a boutique-like store, it is vastly unorganized, especially when that they're selling a lot of organizational products. It's hard to find stuff in the store without help of an employee. In this vein, not a perfect store, but definitely worth a stop to try and find what you're looking for. read more
