Texas Art Supply is my favorite art store, and it's HUGE! They have an incredible selection of supplies for all kinds of art and crafting projects. I've come here for children's art supplies, gifts, and paintbrushes. Their paintbrush selection is fantastic--I've used some for painting and even repurposed others for makeup, and they've all worked great. They carry everything you could possibly need: brushes, paint, canvases, drawing supplies like pencils, pens, chalk, and charcoal, and a huge variety of crafting materials. You'll find jewelry-making supplies, sand art, glitter, stencils, scrapbooking items, face paint, gold leaf, and even supplies for sculpture. The store is well-organized, and the staff is always helpful if you need to find something or have questions. It's a place where you can find inspiration for any creative project. Wonderful local mom and pop shop. Huge selection with higher quality items you won't find in the big box stores. People who are serious about using the best art supplies shop here. Texas Art Supply is fun art supply store. I first discovered this store (a few years ago) when I was taking art classes and needed specific art supplies and I've been back ever since. Aside from the obvious, they have a small toy selection which makes it easy for me to shop for my nieces and nephews. These gifts are entertaining and different. The kids love them. The cashiers are cordial. And I think I've been lucky in the sense that when I go and look for something specific either someone walks me over or is very specific in where it is located in the aisle. It's really not a big store but it is jam packed with goodies. Lately, I've been back for foam boards for different occasions. Don't pay anyone to create one for you when you can design your own. The foam boards here are affordable (around $5.00 depending on the size you pick) and they let you use their cutting board to cut out the hole of your foam board so you take it home ready to decorate. You can cut an even hole or leave a wide bottom to look like a polaroid photo frame. Take it from me, just cut an even hole. When I tried the polaroid photo style and we started taking pictures, people turned it sideways so more people could fit in the frame. (Alcohol may have been a factor. LOL!) Anyway, now is a good time to start working on some festive signs for the upcoming holidays. These decorated foam boards are great for sharing on social media. (p.s. I can find practically anything at Texas Art Supply, and I have. My most recent purchase was a 12" articulated wooden figure for use with drawing. It was for a care package for a niece who's taken an interest in sketching. The store had them available in either gender, so I got female figure, thinking my niece would be more comfortable with it. The price was great (under $8). Curbside pickup was exceptional. A clerk came into the parking lot, gave me the figure and took my cash, then came back with my change. I was grateful they didn't ask me to come in, since the transaction meant more walking back and forth than usual. I'm grateful that they're being so amenable during the lockdown. read more

They have everything you need for any project...no, I don't glue pom-poms together to make furry animals for my dashboard. But, if you did, you could get the supplies here. I visit for the wide variety of oil paints, canvas sizes, and selection of papers/stationery. They also have a reasonable selection of frames. In what galaxy could this place get over 1!! The staff is so pretentious. Yes they have a huge selection, but don't ask the staff a question (if you can find even find an employee) unless you want to be belittled. It's like you should be honored to speak with them. The paper guy seems to have a permanent scowl, it's incredible frankly. A school told me to go there to buy a children's drawing book. Well. Their books are in such disarray you cannot find anything. When the staff refused to help me I was forced to raise my voice to a mild yell, explaining that it was people like them that make people like me BUY AT AMAZON. There are maybe 2 nice staffers, very helpful, all that you would expect but I don't remember their names. read more

This place isn't so bad, but the guy in the paper section SUCKS! He goes out of his way to not help, doesn't know anything about the paper and wants you to do his job for him. Plus he super rude and unfriendly. Super slow on purpose so that he doesn't have to help, and gets really short if you ask him a question. He also dented and wrinkled the paper I was about to buy cause he doesn't know what he's doing. And then he didn't want to wrap the paper. VERY bad experience. NEVER coming back here for paper. read more

Of all the stores I've ever been to, this is the one that I feel the most at home. You wouldn't guess that it would entail all that it does, but it has the most tremendous selection. Whether you are looking for simple crayolas, coloring books, stencils, paints, brushes or if you are looking for easels, books on every subject that involves creativity, drafting tables, or anything that screams do it yourself. The store is easy to find things inside of and it's also really easy to spend hours just wandering and filling up your basket with things you didn't realize you wanted/needed. The people that work here are friendly and helpful. There is a sense of community about everyone in the store. I overheard so many people sharing with one another about what they were working on or what they were buying. I will never choose a Michael's or Hobby Lobby over a Texas Art Supply unless I am forced to by proximity! read more

Of the three Texas Art Supply's, this is my favorite for several reasons: I love their murals (it used to change every five years or so), it has everything I could ever need in the way of art supplies, the supplies are logically laid out, AND there's no pretentious attitude that the Montrose location readily hands out. Oh, and it gives me an excuse to wander around Cornelius nursery. (Although I read that the nursery burnt down recently-sad.) I typically go here to find paint, canvases (yes, I'm too lazy to stretch my own), pencils, and paper. They have a vast selection. I tend to get lost in all of the colors, brands, and types of paint. There is also a great office supply section. Every type and color of highlighter and pen you could never imagine. The prices are reasonable. Most art supply stores, especially specialty ones (which this place is in league with) tend to over-charge for their wares, TAS does not. read more

The guy in the back was a dick. Reading the labels helped more than talking to him, plus they didn't make me feel like I was being watched. There is a ton of stuff in there and of you're inexperienced like me you'll feel like you're drowning. They really could use a new staff. Oh and the door being so far from where you can keep your bike is ridiculous. Not everyone in the world has a car. Hell there were two areas for smokers....yeah they didn't forget that. They have screen printing stuff that I may want/need in the future so there's a chance for one more visit. Then again maybe I'll take the bus to the one on Montrose. read more

I went here for the first time yesterday because my boss prints his business cards on a nineteenth-century printing press. You could say he's a hipster. Anyway, I had to pick up a pica ruler and some Webril wipes for the press, and I was very impressed by how neatly everything at Texas Art Supply is organized. Seriously. This place is spotless. Also, they have a collection of Klutz books, which were favorites of mine when I was younger. Their stationery collection is beautiful and decently priced. I spent almost thirty minutes just choosing paper and envelopes to purchase. There aren't many employees around the store to help you find what you're looking for. I asked the girl at the register where the wipes were located and she just said "4C" as in "Aisle 4C" like I was stupid or something. Oh well. I could spend hours in this store just looking at all the supplies! read more

Well, they do have a lot of art supplies here. However, I won't be going back. Purchased a flexible arm lamp for my daughter's desk, to do her homework on. It worked for about 6 months, then the switch discontinued working. I consider a lamp a durable type good, one that should last years and years, so I motored around the corner to the Texas Art Supply on Voss where I bought this lamp. Like many, I keep all of my records electronically, and after punching into Quicken, I discard the paper - recycle if possible, of course. When I showed up at Texas Art Supply, the manager would not exchange the lamp - she needed a receipt. She offered to order me the part so I could do the repair. Crazy, I'm not a lamp repair technician so I politely declined her offer. I called the credit card company and they were supposed to fax the receipt, but according to Joshua at Texas Art, it never arrived. Long story short, I left the defective lamp at Texas Art. It was only a $40 item, so it certainly is not worth continueing to motor over and spend time with Joshua and his supervisor trying to get Texas Art to exchange their defective merchandise. So I won't. Can you believe that Joshua's supervisor suggested that since I had received 6 months of service from the lamp that I did get what I paid for, 6 months of lamp life for the purchase of a durable good? Needless to say, I'm not happy. I certainly won't be going back to Texas Art. If they queried their records, they would see that I was a many time repeat customer - but not any more. The upside is I don't have to ask myself anylonger if Texas Art may have an item I need 'cuz I won't be going there regardless!! BUYER BEWARE. IF YOU PURCHASE ANYTHING THERE, PLEASE BE ADVISED IF IT IS DEFECTIVE, YOU MAY HAVE TROUBLE GETTING AN EXCHANGE. Your mileage may vary. Date - August, 2010. read more

This is a smaller version of the Montrose art supply palace, but it's got almost as much stuff (and, probably, everything you'd need to make nearly anything). Books, frames, and furniture are on the right of the store; paper is in the back left corner. The rest of the left side is a mix of painting, drawing, and sculpting supplies, plus a few office supplies and some great kids' stuff. Over the 20+ yrs I have come to Texas Art.... it seems like they hire the best choice of people that actually love art and are there to help you!! I have never had bad service and everyone is always there to offer help and ideas if needed!! You will be surprised on the amount of products they have.... I love wandering around this place and browsing through all their books and supplies. I miss Utrecht though. Who really needs more of Buffalo Exchange anyway?? Fortunately, if you are a teacher, TX Art offers 10% off to teachers. The prices are higher than I like, but I like more to just buy my supplies without the hassle of running into crying children at places like Hobby Lobby or Michael's and without having to navigate around all the weird super crafty stuff.
