My 82 year old mom quite frankly did not understand why the company installed a 3 zone system on a 4 zone irrigation sprinkler system already in the ground. Not surprisingly, an entire sprinkler zone was not working. The owner Jake returned the phone call and immediately started yelling, and screaming like an unhinged lunatic. Instead of trying to understand what information I was asking for he started screaming and using foul language. It was a rather frightening experience on the telephone, and Jake the owner seemed to lack any control over his anger. I've read some of the glowing recommendations from other people and it makes me wonder if maybe he's normal when everything goes his way but when confronted with potential problems who knows what this explosive guy is capable of.

The second time was for more expansive work which included sod removal and replacement for about 1/2 of my front yard. I had some specific but reasonable requests. The owner James/Jim agreed to them upfront. Jim said they'd have the job completed in 3 days. They came out on Thursday, June 19th and removed the sod. But not as instructed. Spoke to Jim said they'd be out the next day but it never happened. They returned again on July 2nd with the sod. Jim's "henchman," literally threw the sod down making no attempt to align with the previous piece. Many pieces of the sod were terrible. Dead and rotting. (I've personally resodded my yards on 3 occasions so know how to lay sod and to be able to discern good sod from bad.) of course the bad sod was not his fault but he initially wanted me to deal with the sod company. I told him no, that he chose the vendors and that it was his responsibility. They were to also reduce the size of landscape island which was in the shape of an hour glass to about 1/3 of its size. I told him I wanted the old pine bark raked out so the new sod would take. Again, "no problem, according to Jim. Take a guess who ended up taking it out right! After weeks of excuse after excuse on why they couldn't return with the replacement sod (he had a doctors appt and then a dentist appt and then had to travel to see his mother, the sod company was out of sod-I called to confirm and of course that was not the case) they retuned but only after threatening to take him to court. In summary a job that was suppose to take 3-4 days ended up taking 33 business days to "partially" complete as I finally gave up. Jim comes across as an amiable guy but is just a blowhard. Do not use this outfit for anything but simple irrigation work. If you do, you'll regret it.

When the work was finally completed, we were left with no grass, no flowers and no plants - pretty much a barren wasteland that looked horrible. As we put the word out to landscape designers, we started to get contacted by several companies wanting to quote the work. Steve from S & L was the first to respond. He was punctual and professional at the estimate appointment, COMPLETELY understood the assignment as we described what we wanted and provided a very reasonable quote for the work we requested (he even provided us with a thorough sketch of our vision the very next day!) This was a marked difference from the other companies - some wanted to charge us just for their plan (!), some had to be chased down for a follow up, some missed their scheduled appointments and others were ridiculously high with their estimates. Throughout the planting/installation process, Steve and his team were in constant communication with us, asking us to check their progress as we moved forward so that we were all on the same page (even offering GREAT suggestions). My wife and I could not be happier with the results. We have a beautiful lawn of new sod, several beds of native Florida plants and trees and dramatic uplighting that makes our home look like it was photographed by House and Garden. I had Matt B (Nephew of Jim - Owner) at my home yesterday to service our 8 zone system as our Rain Bird System had an error code. He came out assessed we had a dead solenoid, as well as some heads that required service, and a necessary new pipe and irrigation installation. His initial estimate was on the high end but he later explained to me that it was secondary to potential increase in time (charge by hour), should they encounter tree roots, etc. Made sense to me. The eventual price was quite competitive. I had already written a check for the high end estimate, and gave it to him. When he finished the job, he actually handed it back to me telling me the bill would be ~ $100 less! He could have totally kept the extra money and I would not have known differently. Talk about fairness and honesty! To say we are thrilled with this company is an understatement. Thank you Agape!
