Very cute pub. I had the Shepards pie and the Brussel sprouts for my side. It was absolutely fantastic. I have never had Brussel sprouts made that were perfection as they were here! The Irish soda bread was a definite must try also. We also had the crab cakes that came with enough greens that basically made it a salad. The crabs cakes were also very good. They had a huge selection of tap beers that would satisfy just about any palate. We were very satisfied with our experience. We stopped in for dinner before an event at Stevens auditorium. We were seated right away and got our orders in. I got a martini and it was very well prepared. My wife got a glass of wine from their decent wine list. For dinner, I had the lamb burger, which was quite tasty. It was a good combination of flavors and the fries were hot and crisp. My wife got a naked burger with a side salad. The creamy Parmesan was very tasty and it was a nice bed of greens. A table next to us had some sort of a problem with one of the dinners and the server tried many many times to get the customer to order a replacement, but he said he was OK with what he got. When she brought the check to them she made sure to take that off since he did not eat it and would not accept a replacement. Thursday evening. Meeting up with some friends for a double date. One of them has a gluten allergy and suggested this stop since they had some good options for her. Walking from the car was nice on this warm January evening, however if you have problems with mobility or it just took old and want to be dropped at the door then they have a nice pull up drive to the door. We got a text that our date had already arrived and was at booth at the bar. We walked in past the hostess and rounded the corner to meeting them at the booth. We slid right in and the waitress was there to help us with our drinks and menus. She had already been talked up by our friends and everyone was smiling and enjoying their time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The set up in this area was nice. It was a bar with high top tables and with booth also.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff were all very friendly and you could see others sitting up at the bar enjoying their meals. The lamb burger was our choice for the meal tonight. We got one to share with a side of Brussels sprouts. Like we were told, the Brussels sprouts were really good. I ate them like candy as they had a nice fresh taste to them. Then I bit into the lamb burger. - Drool. Can I please go have another? The flavor of the meat was really good. It was a nice juicy burger with a great taste. I also got to taste the spinach artichoke dip. It also was good. While we were talking our friends told us that the last few years at this restaurant there has been a turn around on the menu and food quality. They have a wide selection of other items, if Irish isn't your preference. I had the Corned Beef & Cabbage, which came with a piece of soda bread, a small scoop of garlic mashed potatoes and Guinness mustard. I also ales for a bit of gravy on the side, assuming it would be tasty as well. Good LORD! This meal was tasty AF! First time at Dublin Bay, have been coming to Ames since 2022 when kid started at ISU. Not sure why we missed this place till now but glad we stopped in finally. Ordered the onion rings, split the Reuben sandwich with fries. So good!! Crispy fries with yummy sauces and the onion rings were the best I think I've ever had for real. Reuben tasted as expected and the Guinness brew, will try more traditional Irish dishes when we come back with more time. Which will be sooner than later! read more

Just ok. Based on the reviews we were very excited to try the "authentic Irish dishes". At our table we had shepherds pie, banger and mash, Guinness beef boxy and the turkey Reuben. Out all of the dishes the shepherds pie was the best. The turkey Rueben was dry and came with mixed greens - thinking that meant salad we asked them to hold the onions - which they did but then it left ONLY greens- nothing else on the "salad". The bangers and mash was not what we expected. The bangers were not good. The mash was ok. But it all had peppers on it? The Guinness beef boxty had an overpowering sweet taste instead of a savory one. Most of the dishes were again- just ok. Yeah! So. Irish food is not for everyone but for those of us who like it this place does it right! I've eaten here that past 2 nights and everything was great. The decor is splendidly authentic (or as authentic as Iowa can be when it is t Dublin). The service is attentive and very quick. The food is really good. While tonight's fish and chips were moderately good their version of lamb based shepherds pie (name escapes me-but on the menu it is listed right above their farmers/shepherds beef based pie) is amazingly good. Hearty. Filling. A little heavy on the salt but not in a bad way. Just great. Chunks of lamb, ground lamb, earthy root veggies and mashed potatoes second to none. This was our third time here. First time when dropping our our daughter for freshman year. Second time was a few months ago dropping her off for her senior year and then again tonight. We've been sat at the same table each time which we find funny. The food here is very good and everyone enjoyed their meal. The have a very good selection of Irish whiskeys to try. We don't get to Ames very often but this has been a great spot after a long day of traveling. Bonus is we can walk from the Courtyard were we stay when in town. read more

Stopped here at the recommendation of the bartender from TimeOut. Walking in, you get taken immediately to Ireland. The atmosphere is lively for an Iriah pub and grill. The bar area has several high tops available for patrons as well as two smaller booths for a slightly more intimate setting. The wood is dark and worn, and mantles are adorned with boxes of whisky and scotch. I ordered corned beef and cabbage. The cabbage is red and green buried under a pile of beef! I ordered the steak sandwich (no bread) and a mixed green salad with garlic Parmesan dressing instead of fries. I'm doing keto. The steak was 8oz and I couldn't finish. I thought it could use some salt but that just be my pallet. The dressing on the salad was wonderful. The waitress was friendly and personable. We recently moved back to Ames after living in Las Vegas for the past 14 years. We decided to go check out one of our favorite restaurants to see if it was still as good as we remembered. We were very pleasantly surprised that it was just as good today as it was many years ago! Sorry I didn't get photos of our main courses, but I got one of the drinks and dessert. My husband ordered our favorite go to, Irish Nachos with chicken. They tasted exactly like we remembered and maybe even a bit better. The chicken was very tender and juicy, lots of toppings and well made waffle fries. I ordered the Shepherd's Pie. It was very flavorful and filling. The Irish soda bread was delicious as usual also. It's a good addition to the meal. We were excited to try the Mama Dee's Home style Cheesecake since it was my Birthday, but they didn't have any on that day *sad face*. We opted for the bread pudding and we're happy we decided to try it out. The whisky caramel sauce had a great taste and was a nice finish to our meal. I ordered a peach mule and my husband had a beer flight. The mule options are great, and I'll definitely try the other flavors in the future. The beer selection on tap made my husband happy as the options are plentiful. We'll be back soon for sure and hope to get some cheesecake to update on how it is. During our visit, we were most impressed by the extremely friendly staff and the big food portions! The two of us shared the Irish Nachos and one order of Bangers & Mash. The Irish Nachos were definitely enjoyable--similar to loaded fries you could get at any restaurant. While I'm not a huge fan of English food, the Bangers and Mash was decent--BIG portion! This place scratched an itch for me that is difficult to reach! So many Irish place serve junk like "McAlfredo" or "O'Flaherty's Tacos". Not here! Here they have actual Irish food. And it is done excellently! Irish food is fantastic and if you are going to have an Irish Pub you need to make actual Irish food. I had the Boxty, and if you have never had a Boxty do yourself a favor and get one! Meat stuffed in a potato pancake and covered in sauce. Then I got the brussel sprouts. So good! I actually got another to go order of them. They are that good. We are staying in a hotel and my family is in fear of what is going to happen later tonight when they hit my system. We decided on Dublin for dinner. We sat at the bar which may have been a mistake for dinner. Bartender was Nice but she was working alone and very busy. My wife ordered the strawberry salad with salmon dressing on the side. She thought the salad was good and the salmon well prepared. The dressing on the side was perfect so it wasn't over dressed. I asked about a couple items and the bartender recommended the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. In Iowa, the BPT bar is VERY high. She said it had been a special for 5 months and was sooo popular that they put it on the menu. May have been my fault for straying from Irish fare at an Irish restaurant. The BPT came out super dark. They had obviously left in the fryer too long. It should come out GBD, Golden Brown and Delicious. My wife and I looked at and couldn't believe it came out of the kitchen. Where was the chef, kitchen captain or server on this thing? The food was dropped and we could not get our servers attention. I ate a few of the waffle fries but they were cold and stale tasting. O for 2. I cut the sandwich in half to maybe eat the middle, but the tenderloin was so thin it looked like all burnt breading. She ate her salad and I drank my beer. The bartender finally stopped by with the tab and asked how was everything. We decided to just pay and leave at that point. It will be a minute before we go back. read more

The food is def sub par especially for the kind of money they demand. I had the bruschetta chicken sandwich which was pretty much cold and tasteless. We asked for buffalo sauce and all they had was a sweet sauce. I would have done a better job, grilling a chicken patty and putting on some sauce. I had not been back to the Bay in several years, it used to be a favorite spot just to grab a beer. I genuinely missed going there and I was super excited when work sent me to Ames. The drink selection here is one of the best around, plenty of amazing beers on tap. They also have lots of bottled and canned beers too. They really have a lot of whiskeys, and scotch too. The service at Dublin Bay has always been stellar and the Irish Pub feel lives here. It is the real deal. The food like Bangers & Mash, Fish & Chips and the Soda Bread stand out to me, very tasty. When I come to Ames (or any other time for that matter), Mom & Dad prefer to go out to eat for Dinner. The hardest part is picking where to go, because they'll pretty much been everywhere their is to dine in Ames. And for all you folks who sniff at Iowa as "fly over" country, there are indeed some very good places to eat in these parts. During my last visit, I suggested Dublin Bay which Mom & Dad only vaguely remembered ever visiting. I jumped on that, and off we went. Did I mention that dinner hour for my folks is somewhere between 5 and 5:30. That's called "Early Bird" in the Midwest and a late lunch in Spain. At least the restaurants are relatively uncrowded during that time. When we entered, we were greeted and seated almost immediately. My only quibble with Dublin Bay is that it's a bit too dark for my taste. Past that, the service was very good, the beer selection was relatively impressive, the food selections were diverse (especially for a place that shouts "pub grub"), the portions were generous, and everyone enjoyed their meal. This was not a "Wow" experience, but rather a "they did well for who they are". Dublin Bay met my parent's bang for the buck test, and I'm sure we'll be back. That if this place makes it past the "but we've been there" restaurant choice test. read more
