If you're keeping score, that's four beers and a small pizza. I was heading for The Local next but saw Gallery House across the street. I pulled out my phone, checked the rating/reviews (very high) and popped in. Well, it was supposed to be a pop in but I popped off. To be honest, I don't really know what 'popped off' means. It just flowed so I rolled with it. I went to another browser to look it up but I have never seen an expression have so many meanings. Apparently, it can mean anything from 'had a good time' to 'talked loudly' to 'selling party poppers on the exit ramp of a highway.' One of the above meanings is not true. Just a little game for you. And no intention to rhyme. Just dropping a dime. Anyway! The vibe at this joint is awesome. Very chill. The bartender was friendly and good at her job. Only one problem: she makes the strongest Old Fashioned in the history of mankind. I made the mistake of ordering a second one. That wasn't a good idea but it's 100% on me. I'm a friendly drinker. But I have moved away from liquor and just have two wines or three beers for a normal experience (since being hit by drunk driver in early 2025). However, on this night, I think I might have been unintentionally rude. Not mean. Just stupid. The best word might be 'brash.' The bartender told me I should go get some mozzarella sticks around the corner. Well played. I have never had that happen to me. I can laugh about it now. 100% sober. I don't like when I get out of control with people that seem chill. That bartender is probably a great conversationalist. It started out that way. Before I went to the moon (figuratively speaking). But, we always move forward. Side Note: Luna is a cool black lab that hangs there. My dog, Lulu, was originally Luna and also a black lab and came from a tough home so my son re-named her Lulu when she was nine months old. She is now 11. For those who don't know (the majority of people reading this): I no longer write books and use Google and Yelp as my writing outlet. My reviews are not standard and I view them as an opportunity for me to tap in to something I love but no longer do. They read more like short story reviews than critiques. I highly recommend this establishment for the chillest vibe in Charlotte. No exaggeration. I wish I hadn't been buzzed when I walked in or had a second drink but that's on me. Cool place and staff. Also: Don't listen to Jacob on his review. Looks like a child putting random things behind the counter? It's called creativity and expression, my guy! It's what makes the place shine and come to life. Never stifle someone's creativity.

My family of 5 visited Alchemy for Brunch…read more First, my wife and son waited 30 minutes for drinks, and when they arrived they were the wrong drinks. They both ordered iced Cinnamon Toast Crunch lattes, and both received a hot version thereof. As for the food, my daughter ordered her steak medium, and it was far overcooked. This is inexcusable - both to cook AND to present if you're a food runner - but she didn't want to make a fuss, so she kept it and ate half of it. In addition, the steak was butchered badly, with a far amount of unrendered fat. It's 4oz of strip, not an 18oz ribeye. Whoever was expediting should've had it recooked. Additionally, the fries were soggy, the eggs were far from over easy, the hollandaise was bland, and the steak-covering 'tomato aioli' (which looked or tasted like neither) just seemed a way to try to hide the mistakes with the steak. Please see the attached photos for documentation of her dish. The other food issue was with my wife's (beautifully plated) Japanese pancakes. When I've ordered these in the past - or made them, or even relied on the description in your menu - they've been light and fluffy. Generally, this is accomplished via folding in egg whites, which lends an airiness to the dish. Deflation is normally a concern, but not with yours. It was as though dense pancake batter was simply cooked in a ring mold. In terms of the service in general, it was subpar, to put it kindly. My eldest daughter never had her water refilled, and in general the waits were too long between checkups at each stage of the meal. And finally, the check. When the check arrived, it included three additional drinks beyond what we ordered. After pointing it out to the waiter, and him having it corrected, it still contained (contains, actually) an additional drink. Regardless, I went ahead and paid it, because everyone was annoyed and ready to go. Somewhat slow service I can understand, especially with the labor issues that have plagued service industries of late. I still tipped $22, because my wife and I both used to work in restaurants and understand that people should be paid a fair wage regardless. That said, a $170 breakfast - without alcohol - should be memorable... for good reasons. I'm giving it a 2, because the presentation was definitely instagram-ready. But it's been 5 days since I emailed them feedback, and not so much as an automated reply. So maybe even the 1 was undeserved...

Since I still had time before the Postino event kicked off, I walked down to Olde Mecklenburg for a beer. It was a bit too cool to sit outside in their beer garden, which is usually the move, so I settled inside and it was exactly the kind of comfortable, familiar brewery vibe that makes you want to linger for a second round even when you know you shouldn't. Parking is three hours free, which is generous for a place this busy, but you do have to register your car. If you stay longer they'll charge you, and if you don't register at all they'll be less than thrilled, so it's worth taking the extra minute to do it right. The whole setup makes it easy to spend an afternoon here without feeling rushed, which is probably why I ended up enjoying the pre‑event time just as much as the event itself. Since I went early in the wk I didn't even use up 3 full hrs of parking, but just be mindful of busier times, that 3hrs can go by quick.
