Had a job transition so money became tight As our household had to adjust to 2wk pay periods instead of weekly. I reached out to have extension to bill due date to avoid disconnection (for 2 yrs bill has not been late or power turned off for no payment, ever). Very friendly and accommodating on the phone and received a 7 day extension and text confirmation. Then over the next several days I had 4 phone calls and 2 text messages informing me my service can be disconnected. Seriously?? Talk about anxiety and stress compounding. I finally payed it, 9 days before original cut off date and 17 days before extension. So disappointed in how "working with me" did nothing to actually help me. Been paying for surge protection for years to Duke. Than lighting hit near my home, destroyed ceiling lights, air conditioner, garage motor, motorized bed, internet router and modem, and 5 $75 each breakers. I called to make a claim and they said they only cover compressor on major appliances. So in other words thanks for your money and our surge protector doesn't work, and we don't really cover you. read more

I used Duke for roughly six years in Florida through my apartment Complex, and their slew of predatory tactics, poor customer service, and inability to resolve issues they created persisted over the entire six year duration. Ultimately, upon my move out scheduled for July 22, 2026, I placed a "cancel service request" on both, the Duke app and website, prior to July 22 to ensure I would not be charged after I was no longer living in the apartment. After first placing the request on the app, I received a prompt stating a request had already been placed for 2022- knowing I had not yet placed the request, and the current year was 2026, I recognized this as an error and attempted to place the request on Duke's website as well (in addition to the app). I received the same prompt stating a request had already been placed, and so next called Duke's customer service, where I was kept on hold for over ten minutes and the robot ultimately referred me back to Duke's website. Assuming the stop service request had been placed since I placed it numerous times through Duke's website and application, and received a response stating a stop service request was received, I assumed I had stopped my service. However, come August, I've been charged through August 2. While the cost is minor, it's the principle of the issue that has been troubling - after two hours on the phone with Duke support, the answer I was given was that, because their system did not receive my stop service requests (despite that their platforms are the party that malfunctioned), I simply owe the money. Long story short, make sure you reach a human from Duke when you want to stop service, especially if their platforms are "malfunctioning." Their predatory tactics and poor technology are not on your side as a tenant, so cover all your bases to protect your finances! read more

Summer savings zero use of gas. Duke is really quick to bill zero use of gas even if you do not use it. Even if you enroll you have to perpetually check on them each year to see if they are going to charge you rider charges and service fees for zero gas use when you are not using gas services. In Ohio we need energy market regulation to prevent predatory monopoly energy market and unfair billing practices. read more

Horrible...you can't even use a live agent on chat to request your final bill overage payment. They make you call in and wait online. This is the only company I know that will keep your money unless you call to request your overage from your final payment, that you cannot request via a live agent on chat. Multiple power outages this month. However, Duke Energy refuses to provide any credits towards the next billing cycle. Their Justification? When there is an outage, they are unable to charge for energy consumption. While I understand energy bills are based off consumption, the inability to access the utility/service is a huge inconvenience that disrupts even the most basic daily functions. Then in 2023 I moved out my rental so called to shut off my service in my name to be told they wouldn't help me til my balance was payed in full. Now I'm told I never called to do such thing so I owe a whole yr I never used cuz I moved out. Now in 2025 I got new house & they're refusing to turn on my new service. I offered multiple times to pay the balance I don't actually owe on the automated bill line, then when I did the auto billing isn't even working so I'm sent to a 3rd party with guys from another country who say they can take my payment but I don't trust giving my bank information to a 3rd party. A complaint against Duke Energy regarding improper final billing charges for services after my lease and residency ended. I submitted a disconnection request through Duke Energy's online portal prior to my move-out. However, due to what multiple customer service agents later acknowledged as a known system malfunction, I did not receive a proper confirmation, and my request appears to have been lost. Duke Energy is now requesting that I re-engage the property management to assume responsibility for the utility--despite my no longer having control of the unit or any agreement with the landlord. This situation was exacerbated by poor customer service and no disclosure on Duke Energy's website regarding the system error, depriving the chance to verify or escalate the issue in real time. Horrible service with the gas portion of this set up. We are a new Ohio business and I have had to call every morning this week, spending 45+. They cannot restore the service. I first told they couldn't locate the meter in their system, then another rep told me it was an IT issue. I've been told at the end of each long call to call back in the morning. Now, Friday morning, the rep put me on hold and said she has to send someone back out ot restore service. UNREAL ! While the monthly bill read 85, they took 741.21 without any written notification for 'yearly overages'. I did not ask them for that account type! I received my next bill, paid it, then received my November bill. They added A $250 charge to my power bill. That's 3 months worth of power bill money for me. So despite multiple calls to different departments, as the limbs that were cut by Buford were left on my lines and as the rains came and went, the limbs got heavier and heavier and eventually pulled the line off the house. Did Duke care, nope! Did Buford have to fix the mess, NOPE! After weeks of this, a very kindly crew that apparently did not get paid for all their work, fixed my issue. We just came into our house (in Mason) and smelled gas at 9:30 on a Friday night. We opened up the house and called Duke. They said a technician would be here within an hour. He came within 20 minutes. His name was Matt and he was able to immediately find the leak on the regulator on our stove. He was clean, pleasant and really efficient! He was able to shut off the gas just to the stove so we didn't have to move out! WTG MATT and Duke for coming out quickly. GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! read more

I've been having billing problems. I live in a 4 family apartment. My apartment has no gas appliances, therefore I do not have a gas bill. For whatever reason, Duke continues to put a gas meter on my bill. This was a problem back in April into May, then my bills were correct for a few months, now all of a sudden my bill is 500 plus dollars because they put a gas meter back on my bill. The owner of the property has called multiple times to get the gas meter removed from my billing as he pays for the gas and I don't have any gas to my apt. This issue keeps happening and I've been dealing with it again for the past wk. I was assured Friday I'd have a credit on my account of 34 dollars and this will no long be a problem, now my bill is 449.51.. Duke continues to not take accountability for their continued mistakes and insists that i have gas but wont send a tech out to confirm.
