Horrible/abusive with cats. No heart. Will take 5 days to be told which medication i need to get for my cat, who cant eat until he gets it. Had to badger them for an email of his blood test results. They are well aware my cat has not been able to eat for 5 days prior to this. Its so simple to just give the names of the prescribed medications. They gave one prescription info... but not the other. Wtf? Im just going to guess which nausea medication so he can start eating asap. These people made no attempt to calm my cat. Hes already sick. They came in and just to check his ears, yoked him up by the neck violently. He fought. They threw a towel over him. Never heard my car make sounds like this. It was borderline traumatizing to see and i left the room. I clean his ears all the time just by being nice to him. He came back from bloodwork looking more distraught than ive ever seen in my life, panting wildly, voice broken. Im really shocked and i would recommend taking your cat anywhere else. When I first adopted my pets it took me a long time to find an establishment that I would hope would provide good service. I bring my dog and my cat to this establishment. My dog is a pit mix & my partner mentioned that they were fearful of him mind you he is a big baby 2 if this is a vet establishment shouldnt the workers know how to handle pets before assuming he is aggressive. He is a big baby. since I adopted my cat and dog i have brought them here. They know my cat needs medication to calm down the last time my cat was prescribed medication was over a year ago. The medication expired 04/20/2024... 2 months ago. I was told my cat couldnt be seen because he bites and scratches and I didnt give him his medicine. NOT ONCE was I asked if my cat needed new medication NOR was I informed he had to take it before his visit. They also but a mussle on him because he bit my hand which I am used to as he was not aggressively trying to bite me he was just scared. I was not given the option to try the mussle again. Instead I was turned away and told to reschedule as I have all the time in the world. I was extremely upset as I even called the day before to move his appointment up and not one person said anything. crazy how they charge a fee if you miss the appointment or cancel last minute but it's okay for them to waste your time!!! I did not bother in rescheduling as I will be taking my pets to a new establishment. If I bring my pets regularly here I would expect for them to make me aware of any steps I need to take before bringing them in. I was also not offered for them to prescribed new medicine as they said They prescribed my cat 6 capsules and I should have enough. I refused to give my pet medicine that has been expired for almost 3 months now. I thought prices were reasonable until I called and booked an appointment at a different establishment where you wont have to break your back just get them up to date with his exams and procedures. I am never recommending this place again! New to the Dumfries, VA area and needed a place to take my dog to look at some irritation. I called and booked our appointment about a day or two before and it went very smooth. We arrived at our time and called in. The nurse on the phone checked us in and then took some triage information (reason for visit, history, etc.). I was happy to know that the week I had gone they had just started to allow one person/family member in with the pet during the visit. During covid our past clinics only allowed the pet in, while the owner/family member stayed outside. Our nurse & doctor duo were extremely professional and friendly. They addressed all my questions and concerns and they treated our dog carefully and respectfully (including scratchies & some belly rubs to keep him calm). They provided clear guidance and prescribed some antibiotics, while also giving some plan b choices if the issue continued that we could come back and request. They also offer a military discount which is always great. I would definitely bring Bogey back here for any routine check-ups or concerns. read more

DO NOT USE if you may need to put your pet down. In our experience, the Dr.'s are amazing, but the staff may mess something up that will put most of your household into tears. We moved to the area and needed a good vet. We had a cat who was nearly 12 years old and who's health was failing. This clinic was very kind and helped us through this process. After all the testing and treatments that could be done, we ended up having to put her down (we were thinking this might be the outcome). Dumfries Animal Hospital was very respectful and sensitive to this process and made that part as good as it could be. Dr. Johnston was WONDERFUL and is the ONLY reason I gave this place another star. We decided to have them cremate the body so we could take her home and do a burial and have a reminder of her with us forever. We filled out all the paperwork and then as a family picked out an urn together (we let the kids pick). We planned an elaborate burial for our three kids who grew up with her and don't hardly remember a life without her. She was like a sister to them and a companion that was always there for them. Adding her to our land and having the urn as a reminder of the years we had her with us no matter what we were going through was a big deal for our family. Unfortunately, when Dumfries Animal Hospital informed the crematorium, they messed up the instructions. Instead of having our cat's remains placed in the urn of our choosing so we could bring her home, she was dumped in a bin with all the other animals they cremate, and the ashes were dumped somewhere in Maryland. It may have been a simple error and they did refund our money, but this rating is due to the sorrow and hurt that we had to go through BECAUSE OF THEM when we were already grieving the loss of a friend. We also went to a lot of effort and money to deal with a beloved companion and friend in a manner we felt fitting and now we just feel robed of that chance. read more

I have been bringing my dog here for the past 9 years for and have always been pleased with their services. I never thought to leave a Yelp review until yesterday when I had to put my dog of 18 years down. It was one of the most difficult decisions my wife and I had to make and we didn't know what to do. Dr. Breen and her assistant helped us with making the difficult decision and everything was done with a quick and seamless procedure. It's the hardest part any pet owner will ever have to face but having them two there made it a bit less painful. My wife and I would like to thank them and I'm sure Romo would too. Many of the staff here are very passive aggressive and judgmental. Some of the ladies at the front desk are so rude and condescending. They talk and write about the customers, answer curtly and rudely with no eye contact. The list goes on. The trust was not there for us to continue to support this business. We have found a different vet and it has been so refreshing to be a part of a more positive environment. read more

I took my puppy to be seen for a minor cough and vaccines on Wednesday. Immediately as he was brought back to my vehicle, he began honking and coughing far worse than previously before. Needless to say, (before I left the premises) I had them check on him again, and they said he was fine. The next day his cough got progressively worse, so I decided to call the vet back and receive some advice... the vet (of course said) bring him back in, (and of course) they wanted more money to see him! I find it egregious and unprofessional for this business to want to double charge me for failing to address the same very issue that my puppy was originally brought in for within a one day span. Aside from wanting more money for the very issue that originally made me seek them to begin with, they could have cared less about the wasted time and inconvenience that their incompetence had brought about...not to mention the puppy's overall health/wellbeing! My advice to anyone who has an animal that is in need of a vet is... TO FIND A DIFFERENT ONE! Absolutely the worst vet I have ever come across (and this is coming from someone who has lived all over the country and had experience with numerous vets)... Dumfries Animal Hospital puts its profits above professionalism and compassion... and those aren't traits that I (or anyone for that matter) should want in their vet. I have been taking my dog here for about 2.5 years now. I feel like we generally leave pleased with the services we receive. Even during COVID times, they are mostly on time for their appointments and are willing to accommodate some of the weirder things I need for my 150# dog (like meeting him outside of the car due to some territorial issues). Some of my gripes are that they can be a little pushy about some of their products, and their general opinions about neutering ( they started recommending at four months which was WAY too early). Overall, I would definitely recommend Dumfries Animal Hospital for general veterinary services. read more

This veterinarian office is run very well normally. Customer service is always exceptional, always. Their vets are extremely knowledgeable and really care about your pet. I trust them entirely with the care of my dog and hold their recommendations in the highest regard they really know their stuff! That said, I took my dog in to have his nails trimmed and while I do know everything operates differently during the pandemic, but it seems they may have overbooked. I had an appointment and still had to wait 45 minutes which is entirely too long for something minor like that. I found it to be a major inconvenience and thought of just canceling the appointment altogether. Aside from that, I do really like this office. If things persist in terms of this pandemic I may just try another location for minor grooming appointments. read more

Horrible experience each time I went. They over vaccinate. They make you feel bad about any sort of dog food that you use that they don't recommend. They give you a " talking to " EVERY time. I asked them to put it in the file so it wasn't like that every time. They failed to do so. They would not let me leave with my dog without vaccinating him. I've had 6 visits here. The wait is 45min - they should just schedule everyone 45min later rather than make us all sit there uncomfortabley waiting. They need to figure out their appointment timing. Today I called to say I'd be 10min late. The receptionist spoke to the vet & said if I'm more than 10min late they won't see me. I thought, "Awesome! They must be running on time today!" Nope...When I arrived I asked the lady how long the wait is today? She shrugged & said, "you're up next." Ok, well at least I was next...30min later they called my name. What really upsets me here enough to write this post is that they weren't going to help my dog whose experiencing excruciating pain because I'd be more than 10min late, but they wouldn't have been ready for us anyway. She told me she could not accommodate my request. I asked why they couldn't try to squeeze me in because my dog really needs a cut and we had already waited 3 weeks to get an appointment. The lady who Identified as the Manager became extremely rude and told me she has been in business for over 30 years and losing 1 client won't matter to her because she has plenty of business. ive been using dumfries animal hospital for 25 yrs they have been very good with my dogs, but latly it seems all they want is to sell stuff, i had my dog scheduld for grooming services and recieved a phone call because my dog wasnt on a vet approved flea med, i told them she was on heartworm flea and tick treatment plus topical once a month with onguard they said i had to purchase once a month flea treatment for 20.00 before they groom her, so i had no choice to purchase she is a 12 pound shitzue with liver issues and doesnt need anymore medication for fleas i asked if they saw any fleas and they said no so why does she need more flea meds? so they can sell from their office . read more

My family has been patronizing this vet for 40 years. Recently we had a serious emergency with our dog Boomer and called for an appointment. We were told that they do have appointments available but since it wasn't scheduled (ie. an emergency) that we needed to pay a $100.00 EXTRA for a during business hours appointment that they had available. We have decided to take our beloved pet Boomer elsewhere where veterinary care encompasses emergencies and the vets care about the wellbeing of the animals that they see. The good: We've been coming here with our dogs for the last 8 months and have been very happy with the prices and treatment from Dr's and staff. The bad: We unfortunately had come to the decision that our dog with lymphoma was ready to go. Of course it was 3:30 on a Saturday when we decided and most vets in the area had closed for the weekend or were about to. I knew we probably couldn't get an appointment, but I called DAH to see if they could give us opinions on where to go for euthanasia. I had clearly been crying and started to explain the situation when the person on the phone cut me off and said there was no Dr at the hospital. I waited a second for the "but why don't you try......." and any acknowledgement of sympathy for the situation. When it was clear she was done talking, I continued to explain that I knew we probably couldn't get in 30 minutes before closing, but were looking for recommendations. I should point out here that I am a huge dog lover and absolutely want the best for my pets. We are a military family and last lived in San Diego. When we had to put down our 12 year old beagle, our San Diego vet happily recommended some places that do in home euthanasia (I specifically wanted in home and our vet graciously said he doesn't do that but provided a list of people he would trust for it). I took their sympathy and professionalism as standard practice. Back to DAH...... So I asked if she could recommend a place for euthanasia and her exact words were, "well, any place can do that for you". No kidding. Apparently it didn't occur to her that I trust this place and value their opinion enough to call and ask. At this point, I got the impression that this was just an awkward conversation for her and she just wanted to be get off the phone and get off as soon as her hours are done. Bottom line, interactions with the technicians and Dr's during our scheduled appointments were great and I always got all our questions answered (I am that person that has a bunch of questions and wants to understand everything). After 8 months, I normally might not let one interaction with a disgruntled employee turn me away from a business. But given that I was asking about euthanasia, I found the attitude unacceptable. The wonderful staff, vet techs and vets here have been taking care of our basset hound Lewis for 4 years, and he was a needy fellow. What more can you ask for than caring professionals? Yesterday we brought sick Lewis in and they took him right in as an emergency case. They evaluated him and gave us the bad news but made sure our last hour or so with him was private, full of family and with plenty of treats (and even bacon from one wonderful vet-tech's lunch). I'm so thankful that we were able to be with him til the end- holding him and giving him plenty of love in a loving environment. Thank you to all those that gave Lewis love in his last years and hours. And thanks for letting us say goodbye in a humane and loving way. I will never forget it. read more

THEY SIMPLY DONT CARE. I took my senior golden retriever there (14 1/2 years old) who was in respiratory distress. The doctor told me that I HAD to give him prednisone...there was no alternative. Against my better judgement, I took the meds. Over the next week, my golden got worse and worse. I called the clinic a number of times asking to talk with the vet. The front desk staff kept putting me through to his voice mail....not bothering to tell me that he was on vacation. Finally, after just over a week with still not a call from the clinic....I had to euthanize my golden. It was truly devastating. They were terrible. Why would they put a dog that old on prednisone and then go on vacation without giving me another vet as the point of contact while the vet was away? They will never see me again...nor will I ever recommend them. read more

I have brought my four pets to them for 2 years now. Every time I call them to ask for advice on anything they don't answer my questions. The lady who answers the phone is never helpful or straight to the point. When I bring my pets in to be seen, they are always short with me and I feel rushed out every time. They are also expensive, my bill is always above $200. My time isn't respected when I do bring in my pets; the wait times are astonishing. I usually have to wait between 30-45 minutes AFTER my scheduled appointment which I always show up for 10-15 minutes ahead of time. They are clearly overbooked and understaffed. This place is an absolute crap shoot. We took our dog there because she had a small growth on her leg and wanted to get it looked at. They looked at it and said that they needed to aspirate it and do a biopsy of the results to see if it's a tumor. After aspirating it, it bled, and I MEAN BLED OUT!!! They wrapped it up and said ok, and the growth should fall off on its own....Wait...let me get this straight...this growth, that you said could be a tumor and may be cancerous, will JUST FALL OFF?? They said yes, billed us $300 and we took the antibiotics and left. Not 2 days later we notice that our dogs leg didnt look right and that the bandage they wrapped her in was completely soaked in blood. We took the bandages off and the growth was bleeding out all over the place. We wrapped it back up and everything seemed fine for another day. The next day we notice that the same thing is going on. We call Dumfries Animal Hospital and speak to Dr. Navar(spelling). I've herd nothing but terrible things about this woman and she is the one that diagnosed our dog the 1st time. She said ohhh you may wanna bring her in and we can do surgery and take the growth off...which will cost another $950. At this point I'm furious. WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME THAT TO BEGIN WITH? My dog had almost bled to death because you told us this thing would just fall off on its own, yet all it did was bleed non stop for days. We took her to Woodbridge Animal Hospital, which let me tell you is a much better place than Dumfries. They told us that she her blood pressure was low and that this growth needed to be taken off and isnt sure why Dumfires didnt tell us that from the beginning. My baby is fine now. Hi everybody. First off, I am a cat breeder. Been raising and medicating cats for 30 plus years. This place is like Las Vegas....all depends who the dealer is or in this case...depends which DR you get and her mood that day. One little black cat I had for 20 years got liver cancer and this place treated that situation and her very well. Yet, 2 years later that vet had departed and I was given a new kid... a young lady on her first practice who wanted to charge me to take classes on how to give an IV of saline water between the shoulder blades in the fat pad. Most of us who have had cats in kidney failure know that this is supportive care. I have done this 2 previous times for my other felines , both times keeping them going a number of years longer. This practice refused to sell me the admin kit, the needles and the saline unless I took a class for $ 180 and bought all supplies from them. I left and went to stafford animal hospital down by the DMV in stafford and was taken at my word that I was a breeder. The doc sold me the needles and admin kit , wrote me a mail order prescription for Saline. The only check was to have me perform the first IV treatment into the fat pad in front of the vet. She was satisfied and all was well. DUMFRIES is a churn and burn vet practice.... money money money ..... run away very fast !!! read more

We have taken our 3 pets here for over 10 years now. The medical care is outstanding and the compassion they show not only the pet but also the pet parents is second to none. We always board our black lab there and refer to it as his spa because he is treated so great he is always excited to be there. The entire staff knows and loves him. Dumfries Animal Hospital's grooming facility groomed my Yorkshire Terrier yesterday and I just wanted to write a positive review for them. I have nothing negative to say about that experience. I wrote down on paper what I wanted the groomer to accomplish with Belle and she went through my bullet points with me so she could have a clear understanding of what I wanted. There's always a little miscommunication on that point but not yesterday! The haircut was top notch! I was late for my appointment but they were happy to reschedule for an hour and a half later. When picking her up, driving on Rte 1 at 3pm was backed up, but I left early from my house in Woodbridge. My suggestion is to take Minnieville Rd over to Spriggs Rd and then east on 234 until you get to Dumfries. So much construction on Rte 1 right now. Things I liked: You pay for the grooming at the Veterinary reception desk, which is on the opposite side of the building, so you aren't tipping. I mean you can, but its not necessary or customary there. That's what they told me anyways. I only paid $52 dollars, includes nail trimming and ear cleaning and anal gland expression, if you want. We don't do anal! lol this is way cheaper that the $70 plus tip I had been paying and the cut was excellent! They have a sign in the Vet office that reads: If you bring your dog or cat in here with fleas or ticks, it will be treated for them and at the owners expense. Love it! They have a tick map that shows the location of where the dog picked up the tick. These dogs have Lyme disease! Interesting... DAH's staff is always friendly, professional and polite. I love them, and thank them for being sincerely nice, compassionate people. read more

This is a simple review... I LOVE Dumfries Animal Hospital! I don't think it is a secret that most Vet's and Vet staff can be a little quirky. Not a bad thing; it just seems to be that way. I have had a LOT of pets over the years and dealt with many Vets. Dumfries is a great local Vet with quality staff and fair pricing. Surgery, Grooming, Boarding and more - it's a one stop shop! Dr. Nichols is my babies primary Veterinarian. He is honest and professional at all times. He has taken great care of my children for several years now. We have had the pleasure of meeting several other Vet's to include Dr. Chrisawn (the bird and lizard guy). Dr. Chrisawn takes good care of my birds. The staff (who are usually very busy) seem to know all the fuzzy faces that come through the door greeting them by name. Don't forget to say 'Hello' to Jose the Hospital parrot when you visit. He is quite the chatter box once you get him going. read more

We've been taking our dog here for several years. While we don't often see the same Veterinarian the care she receives is fantastic. I've taken my dog here for various issues, recently, when she couldn't walk and needed emergency care, they got us in and diagnosed the problem and provided the recommended care to get her back on her feet. She's been seen for ear infections, limes disease and all of her annual check-ups. They are knowledgeable, caring and concerned Dr.'s and staff, all attentive to my dogs needs. The Dr.'s/staff call to check on her after an illness, follow-up with calls from her lab work and make recommendations for additional care if needed. The people you see first when you walk in--keeping the place running, are pleasant and helpful too. The vet assistants listen and are kind when working with my dog. We've also had our dog groomed here and she always looks great when I pick her up. She has boarded here as well. read more

I first visited Dumfries Animal Hospital when my chihuahua needed an emergency visit, but I came back last year when I added two kittens to the household. Though I don't always see the same Dr. I typically interact with the same vet techs and front desk staff. They are all exemplary staff members and treat owners and pets with care and respect. Kailyn (sp?) is typically the person I interact with most and I'm always floored by her professionalism. The only gripe I have with this clinic is getting in it coming from RT. 1 Southbound, as there's just no way to make a *legal* left turn into the lot. Not really anything the clinic can do about, though, since they don't control public roads, but still a mild annoyance for me. Maybe they can plead with VDOT or whomever. LOL read more

We recently moved into the area and both our dog and cat needed their annual check up and a few vaccines for boarding. Usually it's a huge hassle taking both my vocal cat and my very anxious/hyper dog to the vet but the area was quiet and it was not overly busy with people/staff/other pets. I have to also give a huge shout out to the staff and how loving they are to each and every animal they handle, as if they really do love my pet and want us to come back regularly! Lol! I can't appreciate it enough, not only did it calm down my animals to have people who know how to handle them, but also gave me a sense of relief to know that they are in good hands. Another thing to mention is that I didn't feel pressured to purchase any extras from the vet (ex heartworm/tick meds). I usually purchase it from amazon because its much cheaper. read more
