I have used many vets in many states, so this comes from lots of experience. I cannot think of a Clinic that is more caring, thoughtful and efficient We learned of them from a referral by the PWC animal shelter when we adopted a new small senior dog. We moved our other little dog over as we were so impressed with everyone there. Prices are very reasonable, and the care comprehensive. The setting is very homey, and i think the dogs believe they are in someone's home vs a cold barren clinic. It is delightful to see how they decorate for every holiday and event. Just wonderful people. Of note we needed to put to rest our dear little boy of 17 years. The doctor and staff were so supportive and loving. The process was patient and unrushed. Cremation service items were lovely, and we will cherish the memorial items, including the card the staff sent a few days later. We cannot recommend them highly enough. They really understand how to care for a member of your family through their whole lifecycle. read more

I'm surprised to see the negative reviews as I always recommend people to go here due to the care and customer service provided. I've been here with multiple foster dogs, and my personal dog and diabetic cat over the last 5 years, a minimum of 20 visits. My background includes working with veterinarians in Kentucky with thoroughbred racehorses for 30 years and fostering dogs now for 8 years. I have found the front desk, vet techs, and Dr to be exceptionally pleasant in the customer service, care received and answering all of my questions. The doctor even spent an additional 15 minutes removing matted hair from my diabetic cat, which blew me away. Highly recommend. read more

I would rate them a zero if I could. Up until a few years ago they were great, but do not bring your pet here. The front desk staff should be fired. They are rude and don't even act like they like animals. The office staff and doctor are do not return calls in a timely manner. They over book appointments, it's burn and churn. If you want a vet that cares and do not want anything to happen to your pet, do not bring your pet here!!! There are so many good vets in Woodbridge go somewhere else!!!! I recently was there for my cat Luna she was treated for a UTI in February, and a few weeks later her 'UTI' came back- I was told to do a urine analysis and collect a sample because a doctor wasn't available, so I collected the sample and returned it to the clinic- I was told the results would be 24 hours I called the next day which was a Wednesday and the doctor was not in to tell me the results.. then I called the next day Thursday twice, and the doctor wasn't in again.. and they said the doctor would give me a call with the results which I never got a call back, so the next day Friday I called again and the receptionist told me the doctor was on lunch and would call me back, I called again the same day and they told me that the doctor was in a conference and he would call me the following day.. so I called on Saturday, right when they opened at 9 and they told me the doctor wasn't in once again and would be there within an hour I said "I've been waiting 4-5 days now for my cats urine analysis results and you all are stopping her from getting the treatment she needs" and none of the assistants could read me the analysis results- the receptionist said "no unfortunately they cannot" I told them "I'd be in before 3 to speak to the doctor" and the receptionist said "oh we will be long gone before then; we close at 3pm today." So I said "I'll be in there way before 2 then and just so you know I recorded this phone call" I also said for a Urine analysis result that should have taken 24 hours has now been 4-5 days.. (24-108 hours).. I ended up going down to the clinic and told the receptionist what I was there for they all had a mean tone and were giving rude faces at me, I waited to talk to a doctor and he told me my cat has a blood clot and crystals (which can be fatal if left untreated) they withheld information from me & Luna's treatment. All because they did not give me the results on time, and waited almost a week to tell me which is unacceptable: do not take your animals here poor customer service and now my cat is in critical condition and is now being seen by a vet hospital. Will not ever be back. Had the worst experience- Absolutely ridiculous and UNACCEPTABLE! read more

I foster with a local rescue and have worked with a number of vets over the years. River Oaks is by far my favorite office to work with. My fosters always receive the best care from the vets, techs and front office staff. They're located pretty close to my house so that alone is great. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. They can be quite busy at times, but they always maintain their professionalism. The office itself has a really homey feel. They decorate for the season and major holidays. It gives the office a really festive vibe. You'll often find veggies from the onsite garden near the front door available for free to all customers. It's little touches like this that make River Oaks a really great place to go. read more

I write this review not because of the veterinary services provided by River Oaks Clinic, but because of the poor service provided by the administrative staff, specifically the Office Manager, Ruth. On Aug 6th, I brought in our dog for consultation and subsequent surgical procedure that was done extremely well. Before leaving the office after her procedure, I paid the invoice for the bill in full ($883.75). I scheduled the follow-on visit for her for suture removal (2 weeks later) and asked specifically if there would be another payment due for that visit and response I received was 'No, you're paid in full.' On Aug 16th, I brought her back for the suture removal. Her appointment was at 11:30am and we were not seen until an hour later. I sat outside as I saw additional customers go in, be seen and after 30 mins, I called again, and they indicated that they were very busy with boarding clients and other patients. After almost an hour, I called again and was placed on hold to get a status on when my dog would be seen. One of the customers came out and apologized to me because he said, 'I jumped ahead of you in the line and didn't realize that until you called in to the front desk.' I was a bit dismayed by that because appointments are made for a reason, I was told it wouldn't take that long for the suture removal and I ended up having to reschedule a work meeting because of the delay. Most offices take into consideration and respect their customers' time, but it was very obvious to me that wasn't the case with the administrative staff for this clinic. I would have definitely understood a 15-20-minute delay, but not an hour or more. I was finally called in for her suture removal which went fairly quickly and without issue. Afterwards again asked if there was any payment needed - the response was 'No, she is good.' When I arrived home, an email popped up from the clinic indicating I had an outstanding balance of $65.49, showing it as a previously owed amount. The suture removal was listed as $0.00 owed. I called back that day and asked what the balance was for and was told the only person who could give me the details was Ruth, but she was out at the time, and they would give her my number to call me back that day. I never got a call back. I figured I'd get a call back the next morning but didn't. So, I called again, and was assured that they would call me back. It didn't happen. The following week I called and again, Ruth was unavailable. Eventually, I called again and this time she got on the phone after another extended wait. I explained the situation and she indicated it was human error which happens quite often in their office because they get busy. I explained my position of having already confirmed twice that there were no additional amounts owed and after the wait I had for the suture removal, let her know that this wasn't a payment I thought I should have to make as a result of an error in their office. Her response was well I guess that means we won't be seeing your pet anymore. I had used this clinic for our first pet and received great care from the medical staff; subsequently, for this visit it was the same. However, the attitude and the lack of customer service has me rethinking whether I need to find another veterinary office for my pet's needs. Subsequently, I pulled both the original invoice I paid and the subsequent invoice showing a previous balance, and they didn't match. My previous invoice showed a balance of $0.00 and the subsequent one showing the amount previously owed as $65.49. When I spoke to Ruth previously, she told me that was for the medication that my dog received for the post-surgical medicines. But the invoice indicated that I had already paid that amount ($99). So, I called again on 8/22/2024 trying to get this resolved because my insurance company said they could pay it but needed a detailed itemized amount for the remaining balance on the last invoice. When I called the clinic, I was told that today was the day there were no doctors or staff in the office and I would have to call back because Ruth was the only one who could help me. I wanted to speak to Dr. McCorkingdale directly because sometimes the owner/proprietor is not aware of these types of issues. I'm hoping this review catches someone's attention in the clinic and results in some retraining on customer service (and their own systems) to avoid this type of situation again. The $65.49 is not the issue - it's the idea that 1) the workers need to understand and know what they are doing; 2) if there is a mistake then there should be a process to allow for waiving the fee due to their error, especially if the customer has asked more than once - what else do I owe?; 3) I suspect that this isn't the first time this has occurred with customers, so people need to be made aware. read more

I brought my rescue cat there for an eye removal. We'd tried to save it but couldn't. they squeezed us in with a fully booked calendar and worked with the rescue with an amazing price. the staff were warm and loving with her and the doctors were thorough and patient. not to mention the place is so cute and cozy- I wanted to stay there. I'm strongly considering moving my pets to this vet eve though my usual is 1/4 mile away. amazing experience that could have been really stressful! so so grateful! read more

I can't say enough about everyone here. We have been coming here for a very long time. They currently see all 7 of our furbabies. They have taken such good care of all of us including shelter pets that we help out with. One of the things I love most is when we go in there they always speak to my pets first. Let's face it most of our pets are never thrilled about going to the Dr's office so making them comfortable is key. I even have one that hasn't always been friendly but they have never given up trying to win him over and it's working. We have had pets with all types of issues from seizures, diabetes, broken legs and now funnel chest. They make sure we get the care they need even if that means sending us to specialist. This place feels like family. They have laughed with us and cried with us. I'm so lucky to have a place to take my pets to that we can trust. read more

I've been coming to this vet since 2014 and have always had a great experience.The front desk, techs, doctors are always friendly and welcoming. You can tell that everyone who works here loves working and being around animals. Both of my dogs HATE going to the vet (I mean what dog wouldn't hate it haha) but everyone who works here makes it so easy for them. When one of my dogs had an emergency, they squeezed me into their busy schedule (on a Saturday too) to see my dog and see what was wrong with her. She ended up having kidney stones and we quickly made an appointment to get the kidney stones removed. After the stones were removed, they sent the stones to the lab to see exactly how it formed. A couple weeks later, we got the results in from the lab and they told us that it was from the magnesium, ammonium and phosphate so we had to change our dogs diet immediately. It's been almost a year later and our dog has had no problems with the new food! Another plus is that they're very upfront about cost. They give you a price breakdown and comparison for medicine/treatment and give you different options as well. I highly recommend this vet! read more

When helping my elderly friend and her family care for their older Siamese/Burmese sweetheart lovely Cat, we felt River Oaks, with Dr. McCiorkingdale and his EXCELLENT staff of Vet techs and office staff, gave our sweet Pari the best care possible! Even with reasonable cautions for the Covid, we were attended to in a timely manner. All staff were helpful and professional and I have never seen our dog be more relaxed and calm at a vets office. I took my dog there for a serious issue of having seizures, they charged me an expensive bill and never even took his temperature! I took a poop sample and they claimed they tested it after I was about to pay. I asked asked was it included in this high bill. They then said oh we forgot to charge for it and then added about $20 more to my bill!! Never again will I take any pet there! Absolutely spectacular service! Dr. McCorckindale and an assistant came to our home during a pandemic and assisted us in saying goodbye to a member of our family in the comfort of our home. They were professional, courteous, gracious, understanding, gentle and thoughtful in every aspect. I know God had a great grace in this experience but River Oaks answered the call to assist us. Its multiple occasions I call and she has the nastiest attitude for no reason. Like seriously and I'd be wrong if I go back and forth with her right. I recently adopted older dogs and the cost of their dental care was generously covered by a rescue organization, to be provided through this clinic. I have 15 years experience as a veterinary assistant myself, but senior pets are expensive and I wanted to be able to use the dental care provided. I am not sure if the quality of care my pets received was reduced because they were receiving discounted rates as shelter dogs, or if this practice is subpar overall. But there was no adjustment of anesthetic protocol to account for the previous medical conditions of my dogs (neurologic and very old, and history for seizures), they did not receive IV fluids during their procedure, and the front desk staff was rude. I waited a long time just to be handed back dogs that were still sedate, uncomfortable, and nauseous. They are still experiencing issues today and I'll be taking them into my vet to be treated appropriately. I wish I had just paid out of pocket to have the procedures done someplace that treats all pets with the highest quality of care. This place might be okay for quick rabies vaccine or cheap treatment of an ear infection, but don't expect any specialized care. I won't return even if it is free. read more

I can't enough great things about this wonderful animal clinic and their caring and trustworthy staff. Dr. McCorkindale is simply the best Vet! I brought in my beloved cat, Sugar for treatment as he wasn't eating anymore and started to lose interest suddenly in the things he loved to do. Sugar was almost 13 years old and was formerly Pet of the Year (Washington Post) when he was a kitten! Dr. McCorkindale did everything he could for two weeks to help Sugar regain strength and determine what was wrong. Turns out his had heart trouble. I finally had to let go of my beautiful Sugar as he was in pain. The loving care and attention that Dr. McCorkindale and his wonderful staff gave to me and my pet will never be forgotten. read more

We took our dog in for 2 weeks of boarding and had her nails done along with a physical and some shots and tests. The physician did a great job but I was very disappointed by the attitude of the receptionist. Dr. McCorkindale followed up with me and explained the results of the physical. He was very clear and concise with his explanation of my dogs ailments and offered advice for future treatments. He was also interested in resolving my conflict with the receptionist. I understand that it is the quality of the treatment by the doctor that matters but the receptionist is the face of any company especially when you are dropping off and picking up. It would not be fair to judge a book by its cover so I changed my rating from 2 stars to 4. read more

We got a kitten when shew was 13 weeks old. We took her in as she was living in our friends barn, so she had a few issues that required her having to take meds for about 2 weeks. River Oaks and staff are great. They got Phoneix fixed right up. They were very friendly and the Doctor took his time and gave us great advise. I have a zoo of animals so I've been to half a dozen different vets in the Woodbridge area over the last 10 years and River Oaks is truly the best clinic, doctor, techs and office staff I've encountered. The full package! About 7 months ago we adopted a traumatized pit bull mix who has needed incredible patience and TLC to slowly come out of his fearful shell and he still has a ways to go. He's afraid of all new people (loves animals though!) so I often have to carry this 70lb baby to get him into a bathtub or exam room.. he's never shown aggression but he's been muzzled for shots and I was even told by one vet he would have to put him under anesthesia to even look at his teeth. I decided to get another opinion when he was due for his rabies and ended up at River Oaks on a friend's recommendation. This staff is truly special. The tech had my dog eating treats (he's never taken treats from a stranger), he was given his shots without a muzzle (vet said he trusts him until he gives reason not to), and he looked thoroughly at his mouth and teeth, holding his mouth and lips open without fear (or anesthesia! ). The exam room for dogs was big and comfy, like visiting a friend not a doctor. It's clear everyone is an animal lover and doted on my big bully boy. Dr McCorkindale was extremely knowledgeable, taking his time to thoroughly explain and answer my barrage of questions. Just a super smart guy, I appreciated his explanations. He was amazing with my dog, gentle and confident, I felt completely at ease. And I was amazed at how my dog responded- the best veterinary experience I've had, hands down. Seriously, one visit and I'm writing this glowing review. It was that special. When you love your pets like family, and especially when you have a special needs pet, it just touches your heart to see them cared for by a veterinary clinic the way you care for them at home.
