It is well set back and elevated from the main road, which in any case is never busy. There is ample free parking and it is entirely smoke-free. If you like rugged coastlines and fishing villages, this is the place for you (although there is beach nearby). Many rooms/units have a view of the bay. The proprietor grew up in the community, moved away, and returned, and is well-connected with the community. She lives in the Inn and is only a phone call away. She knows all the special places to explore. When we visited, breakfast was a satisfying continental buffet, with cereal, fruit, pastries, boiled eggs, yoghurt, toast, etc. There is no other regular meal service, but everyone recommends the Groundswell pub in nearby D'Escouse, a relaxing 10-minute drive away (at night, drive slowly and watch out for deer!). Although the building is old, the inn rooms are fresh and comfortable with all the conveniences. Each room has independent heat (no A/C but you would rarely need it--the screened windows open easily for fresh ocean breezes). You could not find a better place to stay in Isle Madame. If you are looking for a spot to host a family reunion or hold a small conference in a rural setting, this is the place!

My wife and I found the MacKenzie House B&B while looking for a place to spend one night in Port Hawksbury. We were pleased with our spacious and clean room. Down by the water is a great strandkorb, imported from Germany, where you and your partner can sit with a beer or glass of wine and look at the water to relaaaax. There is no swimming in the water (too rocky), but it's still lovely to explore and take photos, watch the wildlife, and breath the fresh air. The only downside to the stay was that you had to pay an extra charge for breakfast. Granted, the breakfast was delightful, but it pushed our stay into a slightly more expensive zone than we had wanted.

The dining area has quaint tables outfitted with elegant black and white tablecloth's with wine glasses, water goblets, and cutlery, all laid out for you and waiting. The view overlooking the entrance to the Bras d'Or Lake is breathtaking from where you sit. The staff were very attentive, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the menu. The bread basket (with EPIC tea biscuits) were hugged in a black napkin with pats of real butter softening in the basket. These were the best biscuits I've ever had and if they put fresh strawberries and fresh whipped cream on them in season -I'd pay good money for that!! The main meal presentations were mouthwatering. When I say it made my mouth water it is an understatement!! The flavour burst in my mouth and made my eyes close. Soooo good. I'd say with out a doubt the chef (Jason) knows what he is doing and has equally talented staff behind the scene. The portions were perfect and filling enough but when you peek at the dessert menu you'll find the room. (Hollow-leg-anyone? - yep right here!!!) The in house made ice-cream is melt-in-your-mouth-amazingly-delicious and with the home made warm brownies with hot fudge sauce made me (well Ya-know ) All in all this is a stop I will go out of my way for and YOU should do the same. The room is typical for an inexpensive motel, and we really didn't have any issues. We did pass through the restaurant but chose not to eat there, as it looked like some pretty generic food that was not appealing to us. Instead we went down to the local supermarket and picked up a roasted chicken to eat, which was perfect for us. We did have an issue with our door, where the battery basically died on the electronic lock. They had a serviceman out there immediately to replace the battery, where we then got to hear stories about how the door locks had been installed by Pat Benetar's father (he apparently owns an electronic door lock company). There is no continental breakfast offering, so you will be on your own for food in the morning. There may be food at the restaurant in the morning, but I did not check. There is an outdoor patio with chairs, tables, and a grill, as well as a smaller deck on the upstairs level. Within a half hour of sitting outside in June, I saw goldfinches, a blue jay, and a hummingbird. There is a huge communal kitchen, full sized fridge, stove/oven, and bins you can label with your name to keep food in. Previous travelers had left perfectly good food so between that and our own groceries, we made quite a few meals here. We stayed in a private room (accessibility note: private rooms are up a flight of stairs). Our room had a double bed, two nightstands with lamps, a standing fan, a closet area with hangers, and a window. The upstairs common area and bathroom were shared with a couple staying in the other private room. Clean towels, hand soap, and a hairdryer were provided. The common area has couches, board games, and a big dining room table. One minor, minor quibble: our bed had 2 total pillows and we are both double pillow people. I probably could have asked but I was tired from our travels and didn't bother. Yes, you do have to wash your own dishes but if you're looking for a budget-friendly place that's also clean, this is it. I paid $207 CAD for two nights which is about $75 USD per night. An absolute steal for a great place to stay.

The staff is very professional and friendly. The food and service in the restaurant is excellent. I've stayed here twice now and will definitely be back.
