Great little Nature Preserve right on Hwy 162 between Rantowles and Hollywood. The parking lot/entrance is easy to miss so pay attention when driving out for a visit. Admittance is free and there is plenty of parking in a grassy lot. There is a check-in mailbox at the entrance so feel free to sign in and out. This is a great idea so that in the event something were to happen, someone would come looking for you pretty quickly. It is nature in its natural state, so there are alligators, snakes, and other animals on the property. With that said, if you love nature like I do, you expect to see nature and understand the precautions that should be taken. If not, you might want to read up a bit before venturing out for the first time. This is also a multi-use site (like almost all other preserves around) so there might be bow-hunting or other activities going on simultaneously. The preserve is over 600 acres, so don't worry too much about running across others while you are out and about. There are boardwalks and miles of walking paths throughout the park. This is the lowcountry, so there are beautiful cypress swamps and pecan trees all around. If you're quiet, you'll have a better chance of sneaking up on wildlife, so have your camera ready. This is a wood stork nesting colony, along with other local birds, so bring your binoculars too. There is no overnight allowance, but plenty of excellent day trips can be planned. Most of the area is heavily wooded so sunscreen is not nearly as important as the bug spray. Again, this is the lowcountry. We have mosquitos. And they LOVE fresh meat, so beware! There are a lot of pine trees so the forest floor is pretty clean but covered with pine needles. There is also moss in most of the hardwoods which accent the scenery nicely. If you're down in this part of town, or just want to go out for a lazy Sunday drive, this might just be the spot for you. If you're wanting to clear your head and breathe in some fresh air, this might be your place. Just remember this is "primitive" and you'll need to pack in and out everything you might need for the day. Happy Trails!

A walk through the cypress swamp let me discover a beautiful yellow Prothonotary Warbler. The staff is so knowledgeable here and super welcoming! This is a must see if you're visiting Charleston.

You could easily spend an entire day here and walk several miles without covering the same area twice. They have over 11,000 acres of swamp/marsh, grassland and wooded areas. Bring your camera for some beautiful nature shots. They have a few benches around the park for you to rest/relax. A portion of the nature area used to be a rice plantation. The visitors center adjacent to the parking lot provides a little history for those interested, and has a few items for sale. Bathrooms are available. Pets and bikes are prohibited. Bring bug spray! During our visit we saw several alligators, lizards, squirrels, baby toads, turtles, one small snake, a marsh rat/mouse (who wasn't remotely scared of us), and of course many birds. Be aware you can encounter alligators on the trails and low boardwalks, and there's nothing separating you from them; a very friendly nature center employee said they never have incidents, but the risk is higher in the Spring when males are vying for females. And if you see very young baby gators, remember mom may be nearby.

The overall tract of wildlife refuge appears mostly something that you'd explore by boat, but…read moredriving down the dirt road to this little parking lot leads to an abandoned plantation surrounded by classic South Carolina swampland. Remnants of rice fields ring the mansion, leading to an interesting aesthetic experience even though I missed when the building was actually open. I can confirm that in the winter there wasn't much in the way of biting insects and the alligators I was warned of did not materialize. Probably hiding. I'm guessing in warmer weather the area has significant challenges, though you should expect this anywhere in the swampy parts of the lowcountry. As with any wildlife refuge, the priority isn't visitor experience, but for a free and interesting landscape to wander, it has some intrigue.

Bicycles are permitted so our teen brought his. He probably would have enjoyed it more if it weren't for the flies. We had bug spray on so not really sure how to deter them or if they're less mean in the fall/winter. I'll go back and let y'all know. Ha. They do have bathrooms on site which was nice. They were kinda stuffy in there but better than nothing.
