I love this 8 mile long walkway that is tucked into the neighborhood and covered with trees. Great place to walk your dog, go running, or just take a scroll down the Greenway. If you drive over here, there are a handful of locations that you can park. At the top of the Greenway by Bees ferry, there is a designated parking lot that you can start at. I love going behind the fire station on 17 and parking in the parking lot next to the doctors office and walking over. There aren't a ton of trash cans along the Greenway so make sure if your dog does poop be prepared to carry it for a while.

This paved urban greenway cuts through some of Charleston's suburbia. Occasional public art displays dot the scenery, but besides occasional road crossings it seems largely a straightaway path with not a ton of razzle dazzle. That's not to say that pedestrian/bike infrastructure lacks value of course, as the path is much more pleasant than the surrounding roadways.

West Ashley Greenway offers 8.8 miles of trails for walking, biking, and jogging. Dogs are allowed on leash. You will see beautiful birds, fish, gorgeous bridges with scenic views of the water as well as vibrant flowers and plants. West Ashley Greenway is a beautiful escape into nature with paved and manicured trails. You can bird watch, exercise or just walk through nature with your best friend. I did a 3 mile walk today and it was amazing! The scenic views are tranquil and breath- taking. Please add this to your, "Must-See" list.

Beautiful greenway. Well maintained and safe. Wish I lived closer so I could spend more time here. I recommended it for runners, walkers and casual cyclists.

A great spot for exercise and nature in central West Ashley. Parts are busy, some near the end aren't paved, there's a mix of sunny and shaded areas, with lots of walkers, joggers, bikers and strollers being pushed in the more active areas. No motorized vehicles are allowed, and some areas are very remote from anything manmade with scenic views of the marsh and Stono River.

There may not be a lot of rigorous or mountainous terrain in the Lowcountry, but we do care about our walkers, runners and bikers to give them ample places to get outdoors and exercise. The Greenway is no exception. Running from Windermere to Stono County Park adjacent to Savannah Highway, this walkway is not only a safe place to excercise, but offers education and natures gifts all along the way. Cheers to the West Ashley Greenway

I have a family member that recently moved to West Ashley and lives right along the greenway. We often take the dog for a walk along the paved path. It isn't usually too busy and most people are pretty friendly who are out and about.

Maybe I'm the last to know! Great walking path! I saw beautiful views! My dog and child loved getting out on a beautiful day! I only walked 2 miles but the path kept going!

Loving the slight temperature drop and nice breeze!

We were getting tired of our normal walk locations for our furry friend Tater, so we switched it up and checked out West Ashley Greenway. I looked at some reviews before we checked it out so we knew where to park. We parked behind the shops across from the Earth Fare parking lot. There's plenty of parking in this shopping complex, so no need to worry about that. We went about a mile down and then turned around and we got pretty views of the marshes and neighborhoods along the Greenway. There were a lot of people out and about riding their bikes and running. Personally, I wouldn't want to walk this trail without a buddy and there's no lights at night, so be aware of that. Overall, it was a pleasant break from our normal city views and we will come back for more walks for sure!

If you need a quick escape from reality, this is where it's at in West Ashley. Quiet peaceful walks with a beautiful view. Another perk...if you don't have a dog and need a fix, you get to see so many furry friends along the path. :)

I've been meaning to walk the WAG for a while now, and finally had some time to do it yesterday. It was a little tricky to find, because the trees block the entrance sign, but I parked at Earth Fare and found my way to the entrance. As mentioned by another reviewer, the mile markers (at least for the first two miles) are off by .15, so my two mile walk (one way) was actually 1.7 miles. The part of the trail that I walked on was very nicely paved, and as long as you stay to the right, you'll have no issues being run over by bikers or runners. Nice views along the WAG, both natural and residential. I was going to walk the entire WAG, but realized it was 7 miles (according to the estimated markers) and thought better of it. Maybe next time.

Ask the Community - West Ashley Greenway

How much of this is paved? I am looking for somewhere with nice pavement to rollerblade!

If you start from the Earth Fare parking lot, you've got several miles of paved trail. The end near Main Rd. is not paved. I'm not sure of the mile mark where the paved part ends and trail begins, though.

The worst parts of South Carolina are the overdeveloped ones. This area, being quite undeveloped, has many interesting sights, but also dirt roads, limited parking, and while I visited in the winter I expect the conditions can get quite hostile with the peak season bugs. I took the I'on swamp trail. I could not figure out what the name meant through a cursory online search, nor did any of the signage there clarify it for me. The trail takes one through a wooded area that used to be rice paddies; the organization of the ponds is still evident, but it's fascinating watching natural forces take over the area. There are a number of other interesting stops for outdoorsy types, most notably part of the majestic Palmetto Trail, but the most important thing is that it's not a golf course. Then again, it would be hard to build anything under the conditions in these swamps, and exploring the areas certainly makes one think about their history.

Palmetto Trail is a really nice trail, admittedly! You can tell that park management makes sure…read morethat the foot path is kept up really nice and that its wilderness is proactively cared for by volunteers and park service personnel, and not left for dead like I've seen in some remote state forests. I was really happy to be camping in a forest where there were no bears (YAY!) so that I could relax a bit and focus on the hike without one hand constantly on a can of bear spray. My initial plan was to hike the whole of the trail after having applied for a permit to hike and camp there, and having the permit signed and approved by the park service before I ever even boarded my flight to SC. So the only people who knew that I was there hiking on those dates were the park administrators who approved the permit. :) Yet about 4 days into my hike, at mile marker 10, around 1 o'clock in the afternoon, two hillbillies walked onto the trail carrying guns. It was 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Hunters don't generally start their day to hunt game at 1 o'clock on a sunny afternoon, and since I wasn't born last Tuesday I knew something in the water wasn't clean. Those damn city people, always glass half empty! So I went off trail into a dense thicket to just sit and relax, perhaps even camp overnight until I felt safe enough to move forward on the path of the trail that I was on (since I was alone). Because hunters with guns and recreational hiking trails go together like pet pooches and chocolate treats. Well, that relaxation didn't last long. Long story short, after somehow hunting and finding me in the thicket where I had gone off of the trail, then tapping on trees and instruments and whatever else they could find to make menacing noises (to terrorize me), those same two hillbillies then began to shoot rounds at me, chasing me back onto the foot path, where I then had the opportunity to take a photo of their Silverado "Hail the Confederacy" truck parked on the forest service road at the mile marker. So Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb chased me RIGHT to where they were parked out in the open so that I could get documentation of who it was that was CHASING ME THROUGH THE WOODS AND SHOOTING AT ME IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! (those pesky city folks always thinking all quick! aw shucks! thought all northerners was on cocaine!) They seemed to have really thought all of it through, for sure. Oh but THERE'S MORE! They then came bursting out of the treeline with both of their guns drawn, looking like "Yippie Kay-Yay MF!" as they ran all their jiggly x 2 to that confederate truck, peeling off like the final episode of the Dukes of Hazzard. I immediately dialed 911 as soon as they were finished doing doughnuts on the dirt road (ok the doughnuts in the dirt part is an exaggeration for the theater of it, but they should have just gone ahead and finished off with this move) and I immediately filed a report with the local Sheriff, though I ultimately ended up having to file a Hate Crime complaint with the DOJ since this incident occurred in a federal park. Additionally, I made an amateur short film about the experience HERE. youtu.be/8DqzB-1NNYU Please enjoy at my expense :)
