You start your visit at the visitor center. There you can check in for a visit in the Garfield house which is only accessible with a free guided tour. While waiting, you can explore the exhibition about President Garfield's life and visit the gift shop. President Garfield's life is an American rags to riches story. His father died when he was two and he was raised by his mother in poverty. For this he was mocked and bullied, which made him very sensitive. He left home at age 16 and went to work on a canal boat in Cleveland, managing the mules. In 1858 he married Lucretia Rudolph, and they had seven children, five of whom survived infancy, four boys and a girl. Therefore, the family needed a big house, and in 1876 Garfield purchased the Lawnfield estate in Mentor and its house, which was expanded and restored many times both during his life and after his assassination. The house has since been restored to its original color. On the property you can also visit his 1880 campaign office, which was originally his library, and see the windmill, which pumped water into the faucets, bathrooms, and laundry rooms of the house. The beautiful house is a remarkable and great part of the Ohio and American history. You also enjoy the original decoration and furniture of the house. The dining room is set as a replica of the festive dinner the Garfield family ate to celebrate the news that James had been elected president. I learned a lot about politics in the late 1800's. Things have certainly changed. The James A Garfield National Historic Site is a treasure trove of history. The home is fabulous. Thanks to a generous 1934 gift from the Garfield children to the Western Reserve Historical Society, we can see the home as it looked when the Garfields lived there, complete with original furnishings and artwork. Transferred in 1980 to the National Park Service, we now can all enjoy this amazing home and its history by taking a tour. Lucretia Garfield was an extraordinary woman ahead of her time. After her husband was assassinated, she created a memorial library in the home, to preserve his books and presidential papers. The library included a fireproof vault to protect important documents. I loved the architectural details, coordinating wall paper, light fixtures, and the thoughtful touches that turned the lovely house into a home. I'd have happily paid for this excellent tour, but it was FREE. Honestly, I could go on and on. Definitely RECOMMENDED!

This year, 2025, I brought my boyfriend with me and while he didn't buy any art, we did eat a vegan sandwich from Squash the Beef (service was a 0/10 but food was a 7/10) and I bought a tank top from a booth that sold Cleveland clothing. In the past years, I have definitely bought a lot more, including lawn art and gifts for friends and family, but maybe this was the year where I just wasn't woo-ed by anything in particular. I also have been trying to buy less and save more money, but still like supporting local artisans. If I could give a suggestion, I'd recommend providing maps/brochures at the ENDS of the festival and not just the middle. We started at the end and would have benefited from a map early on, especially since I didn't remember that they normally have food options sprinkled throughout the path of the fair and not just the half dozen trucks at the right edge of the fair, like I thought. We would have liked eating at somewhere other than squash the beef if we had known... Also, please invite more stationery artists! One of my favorites is Haley Morgenstern :)

I attended the 47th Annual Lakewood Arts Festival which was held on Saturday, 3 August 2024 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. I previously attended this festival either in 2023 or in 2022. I had fun with my friend Mallory during the 2024 festival. We walked around for over an hour looking at all the amazing vendors with some coming as far as Columbus. I did not purchase any art but I saw very nice items such as photo frames, cute mugs, watches, leather bags, belts, etc. FOOD -- There were about 6 food trucks that sold all sorts of lunch items and drinks. I was so happy to try food from Naicco Cuisine which I heard is Ohio's first Native American food truck business. NAICCO stands for the Native American Indian Center of Central Ohio. The food truck came from Columbus to be in attendance at the Lakewood Arts festival. The owner, Ty, who I met, is from a tribe in Oregon but moved to Ohio in the 1990's with his family. NAICCO is known for their fry bread which is topped with either butter or with wojapi, a Native American berry sauce. I ordered the NDN Taco Bowl ($12) which is ground beef and tomatoes in a bowl (I got mine without onions and without cheese) plus plain fry bread on the side. This was my first time having fry bread and it is so delicious. It is super soft and slightly sweet. The taco bowl tasted good just similar to any other ground beef bowl. SAFETY -- The Lakewood Police is stationed at the entrance of the festival and police officers patrol the area during the festival. The building is gorgeous!) It did need to have better signage throughout and I wish the layout was a bit less random as we kept circling back and forth and not knowing what we had and had not seen. Anyway, as of August 2025, the cost was $15 a ticket per adult for entry. The Hay-McKinney Mansion was included in the ticket price. We probably should have waited to go in a free tour because information was scarce. I liked touring the mansion but I had a much better time going through the non mansion of the museum complex. I am glad we were able to attend the doll exhibit before it went away later that month. I grew up collecting American Girl dolls and Madame Alexander dolls and this filled me with nostalgia. I also loved the fashion in WWII exhibits. The outfits were fabulous! They closed off a gallery and the outside for a wedding that was about to begin. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and I wish I could have been invited, lol. There were also temporary exhibits on black photographers, women in politics, mini bikes, the superman hum vee from the 2025 I had a good time looking through the Crawford auto aviation museum and of course, riding the massive and free, carousel! It's almost 125 years old and cost 3 million dollars to restore and each horse is hand carved out of wood. The ride is a must-do for all ages! Overall, a good local city museum with some awesome things inside.

Though I doubt that was the case, I had made it a point to learn about the place that my broadcast career took me at the time. Had I been moving to Cleveland, this would have been the spot to learn more about the city and area. My daughter is here as a patient of the Cleveland Clinic. She awaits a transplant and has lived here for a few months already (in Parma). I took a quick weekend trip here to visit her and learn more about the culture. This museum offered a wonderful crash course. I've always thought of this town as the dingy, cold locale for unfortunate fans of the Browns and Indians. I was totally wrong. In fact, Cleveland was very much a player in our country's industrial age. (Far more than my home state of Texas!) Detroit seems to get all the credit for the automobile industry, but Ohio -- particularly Cleveland -- really got there for the cash. Who knew? There are other parts of this museum that left me asking 'Why?' The motorcycle display, while pretty cool, doesn't have much to do with Cleveland any more than any other place. Some of the art ... same thing. Still, you'll learn more about Euclid Avenue than you ever thought possible, and the carousel is a marvelous piece of history.

Check out Corbo's stall. They take credit cards, and have a wide variety of food from spaghetti to cassata cakes. The other stalls range from mundane things like lemonade to frog legs or mussels. Drink options are surprisingly limited. There's a carnival area where all the drunk frat girls frequent, and the typical comfort food stall that sells cotton candy and caramelized apples. There's also a hole in the wall for gambling if you walk toward the carnival. But to me, the Feast of Assumption brings nothing new to the table since I've already been to Little Italy. Most food sold at the feast has a jacked up price. I paid $9 for a bowl of basic spaghetti and a meatball. If you're religious, then you'll be happy that money went to the church that sponsers this event. But if you care nothing for charity, then just go to these restaurants during a normal week for bigger portions. Parking is awful. Little Italy is blocked off, so forget about parking close by. I'm glad I stayed nearby. Prepare to fork over at least $10 for parking.
