I learned a lot about politics in the late 1800's. Things have certainly changed. The James A Garfield National Historic Site is a treasure trove of history. The home is fabulous. Thanks to a generous 1934 gift from the Garfield children to the Western Reserve Historical Society, we can see the home as it looked when the Garfields lived there, complete with original furnishings and artwork. Transferred in 1980 to the National Park Service, we now can all enjoy this amazing home and its history by taking a tour. Lucretia Garfield was an extraordinary woman ahead of her time. After her husband was assassinated, she created a memorial library in the home, to preserve his books and presidential papers. The library included a fireproof vault to protect important documents. I loved the architectural details, coordinating wall paper, light fixtures, and the thoughtful touches that turned the lovely house into a home. I'd have happily paid for this excellent tour, but it was FREE. Honestly, I could go on and on. Definitely RECOMMENDED!

Polish American Cultural Center is a building that contains a museum, Polish Club, reception hall,…read moreand community center for Polaks and anyone curious about the Polish culture. The center is located in the Historic Warszawa District of the Slavic Village. I ventured out to the museum as part of the Take a Hike Program showcasing Polish heritage. I was really impressed with the center, it's one of the more developed cultural centers in the city. I've been to quite a few - Slovenian, Ukrainian, Finnish, and Croatian. MUSEUM: The museum occupies two floors of the center. Every room focus on a certain theme. My favorite was Folk Room. It contained a vibrant selection of dolls, costumers, eggs, and wooden eggs. It likely resonated most with me due to the closeness of my own culture. Other rooms were dedicated to famous Polish figures, and periods in time (such as wars). Various rooms have gorgeous wooden Polish eagle plates, statues, paintings, and other art forms. It's a very comprehensive overview of culture. POLISH CLUB: The Polish Club is located in the basement. There is a hall and kitchen as well as the bar. During my time the club the ladies of the club cooked delicious pierogis and noodles. My favorite was refreshing Żywiec from Southern Poland with spring water. I'm not a big beer drinker but this beer was surprisingly bright and refreshing. You can access the Polish club by purchasing the membership on their site. Various tiers are available starting from $25 per year. EVENTS: Museum volunteers shared that various events are hosted at the center. There are Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations with Polish twist, and upcoming concert series. PARKING: Parking is available at the parking lot across the street. It's well lit and guarded. I felt pretty safe despite this being not the best area. I recommend checking out this center to learn about Polish history and also neighborhood's rich history. Check out local Polish churches and establishments while in the area. I plan to be back for Polish concerts!

Another Cleveland museum crossed off the list! I took my boyfriend here a few months ago and we had…read morea great time, spending a few hours looking around, before needing to leave as they were closing to the public to host a private wedding reception (great location for that, btw. The building is gorgeous!) It did need to have better signage throughout and I wish the layout was a bit less random as we kept circling back and forth and not knowing what we had and had not seen. Anyway, as of August 2025, the cost was $15 a ticket per adult for entry. The Hay-McKinney Mansion was included in the ticket price. We probably should have waited to go in a free tour because information was scarce. I liked touring the mansion but I had a much better time going through the non mansion of the museum complex. I am glad we were able to attend the doll exhibit before it went away later that month. I grew up collecting American Girl dolls and Madame Alexander dolls and this filled me with nostalgia. I also loved the fashion in WWII exhibits. The outfits were fabulous! They closed off a gallery and the outside for a wedding that was about to begin. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and I wish I could have been invited, lol. There were also temporary exhibits on black photographers, women in politics, mini bikes, the superman hum vee from the 2025 I had a good time looking through the Crawford auto aviation museum and of course, riding the massive and free, carousel! It's almost 125 years old and cost 3 million dollars to restore and each horse is hand carved out of wood. The ride is a must-do for all ages! Overall, a good local city museum with some awesome things inside.

Though I doubt that was the case, I had made it a point to learn about the place that my broadcast career took me at the time. Had I been moving to Cleveland, this would have been the spot to learn more about the city and area. My daughter is here as a patient of the Cleveland Clinic. She awaits a transplant and has lived here for a few months already (in Parma). I took a quick weekend trip here to visit her and learn more about the culture. This museum offered a wonderful crash course. I've always thought of this town as the dingy, cold locale for unfortunate fans of the Browns and Indians. I was totally wrong. In fact, Cleveland was very much a player in our country's industrial age. (Far more than my home state of Texas!) Detroit seems to get all the credit for the automobile industry, but Ohio -- particularly Cleveland -- really got there for the cash. Who knew? There are other parts of this museum that left me asking 'Why?' The motorcycle display, while pretty cool, doesn't have much to do with Cleveland any more than any other place. Some of the art ... same thing. Still, you'll learn more about Euclid Avenue than you ever thought possible, and the carousel is a marvelous piece of history.

I never thought I'd be visiting this town so often, but I guess it was Ment to be. She's taken me to the Garfield Historic House and it's pretty impressive, a beautiful colourful old house. It's probably the only "tourist attraction" in and around Mentor except for the Lake shore. Also just down the road in Willowick are the best hot crulers ever, at Biagio's Donuts. Go at 4am and get them fresh, gooey and piping scaldingly hot.

The selection of art work and pieces are sparse but it is a small museum. I visited on a Sunday afternoon in September 2021 with 2 friends. We all enjoyed our time browsing the museum. The staff member that we encountered was helpful. There is an upstairs and a downstairs section. Exhibits are forever changing as in a typical museum so I hope to visit again. Hours are limited and so is parking.
