For Shelby this is your 'Academy Sports'. They have just about everything you would find at the other sporting/hunting good store. Now the selection and tidiness of the store may not be the same caliber but for the most part it's a typical good ol' Shelby version. Staff were minimal but were willing to help and answer any questions you have. There is only one register located on the parking lot side for the sports goods and another one at the hunting counter. The register for the sports section leading into the mall is closed, probably for good as it had a pile of boxes and store shelving kinda piled on top of it. The selection of items was solid but don't expect everything to be put back where its labeled, again the staff was minimal so restocking was eeeehh... ok-ish. As for value for your money, its about the same as any other sports store, I wouldn't say you get bargain prices but you may save some gas money not having to drive to Gastonia for your gear or guns. We however struck out looking for baseball pants as the selection had already been picked through and we headed off to the real Academy in G-town. Overall its a solid 4 star Shelby business. read more

We would like to commend store #9218 for providing Excellent customer service. We were totally impressed with the service we received. Our team went into the store to purchase items for the homeless who are outdoors the initial sales associate Ryan Melton was so attentive and answered all our questions and then solicited the assistance of the General Manager Toya Johnson. Toya was professional and so helpful. She jumped right in, she was patient and helped us get all the items we were looking for. This made our shopping experience a great one. A FFL that does not use a CCW as the background making everyone go through a NICS check delaying your process. The staff had no clue about any of the guns providing false information to other customers as I waited over 2 hours for them to compleate a simple sale. Then they could not find the box and could not break the shotgun down to fit in the box. As some people shouldn't have firearms same thing is said for a store. These employees have no need to be anywhere around a firearm let alone have the ability to sell them. Do yourself a favor and go to reparable FFL's like Shooters express in belmont or North gaston Guns in Dallas. If anyone has ever bought a gun from Walmart and know just how bad the process is with walmart than think again. Dunham's is by far the worst store I have ever purchased a firearm from. I will never support them or make any purchases of firearms or anything from Dunham's. read more

Being profiled while shopping. While trying to shop on 06/12/2022 from 1-1:30pm at the Shelby NC Dunhams. My girlfriend and I were profiled as being shop lifters. We were both followed around the store the entire shop by a female manager and male employee. Never given costumer services. When I confronted the employees they were in shock and speechless. The manager said "I'm just doing my job" I have worked in loss prevention for 4 years with lowes and obtain a criminal justice degree. I do not feel as if these employees made the right choices today. Better training needs to be in place at this store. Profiling is a serious way to have a big lawsuit. These employees will have that for your company. read more

Dunham is on the same course as the mall it's in. Doomed. Lackluster employees, shelves half empty, no selection. As you walk in, the store gives the impression that its close to shutting down. We came in for some camping equipment, i.e. battery invertor, camping chairs, and other things. They had the chairs we were looking for but Walmart has a much better selection and stock on tents, cooking equipment and such. Gun counter looks like it hasn't had a customer in ages, but gun cases were 3/4 empty. No one working the counter and I saw 1 employee walking the floor. Checkout area is a disheveled mess with boxes and trash piles up. They seem to more more concerned with clothing than sports as that's what most of this "sports " store consists of. read more

DO NOT BUY A GUN FROM THEM!!!! I bought a pistol from them after doing a lot of research and looking around. I did not want to buy from Dunham's but they were the only ones to have the particular gun I wanted; everyone else was out of stock or didn't carry it. After jumping through hoops and finally purchasing my gun, I got home to find that they did not put a magazine in the box with my pistol. I called only to be called a liar and talked down to. Now I have a pistol that I cannot shoot and due to shortages cannot find a magazine anywhere to go with it. read more

Thank goodness! Somebody actually came in and took over the old Sears store at the mall. Did our town need another sporting goods store? Maybe not for sneakers, but whoa buddy, this place has a lot more. It's kinda like Dick's and Cabela's had a baby who really likes to hunt. Just opened. Brand spankin' new. Nice layout. If you check out the Grand Opening Flyer, you can really see that they are targeting the "hunting crowd". Need a semi automatic carbine? RealTree crossbow? Got'em. So, they do have any other piece of sports equipment that you can think of as well. I just hope that there are enough customers to support this store in Shelby. read more

I will never do business, nor recommend anybody to, with this Dunham's again. Although the staff is incredibly polite and means well, they lack the expertise to be of any assistance when it comes to firearms. After returning three times, I am still without a gun due to poor understanding of the topic. They admit that they know nothing on the subject, which is both frustrating and relieving that they understand their shortcomings so I blame the higher ups for even putting these employees at a disadvantage as it is negatively affecting them and their image. Please, avoid this store for purchasing guns at all costs. Save yourself time (and most likely money) and find a more reputable location. read more

Yes this Dunham's Sports store is the BEST and is the MOST Well Equipped store within 28 miles, plus, I have been assured by the District Manager Linda Ryan, that there Will be a repose to the slow (to zero) service issue in the Firearms Department. That said, they really do have the greatest selection of Pistols, Revolvers, Rifles (all types) Ammo and even a full line of "air soft" (small safe plastic bullets) rifles, pistols, and rifles - that are Great for training and outdoor (indoor) games. Please make sure that the District Manager is notified of ANY issues! As a Customer, I'd rather shop were there are 100's to 1000's of items readily available for purchase!!!! Dunham's Corporate HAS Provided the most diverse and Quality of Inventory, than all of the other stores in the area! :=) read more

Dunham may be okay for clothing but their gun counter is a joke!!! Waited for 30 minutes today for someone to come to the counter so I could purchase a gun. Asked two different cashiers who said they would call someone, nobody showed so I left. Every time I've been in this store the gun counter is abandoned by employees with multiple customers standing around complaining to each other about the service. After waiting half an hour and chasing down someone I was told that they did not carry the items and they could not be ordered. I have not had good experiences at this franchise . Very slow to get someone to help and when they do , they act like you are inconveniencing them. Tonight I was in the store and was going to buy around $650 worth of merchandise and saw a Ruger 10/22 . I had been interested in feeling one of the rifles and although I knew because I live in GA I couldn't buy it in NC I ask just to see the gun. The obnoxious kid behind the counter stated he needed to see my drivers license and when he saw I was from GA he said no you can't see this gun . He also said Dunham's policy was to only cater To NC residents . I felt so discriminates against. I worked at Dunham sports as a sales associate in 2014. I was hired 10/6/14. Me, & about 30 others helped put the store together. We worked so hard that it was impossible to believe the way we got set up. The manager was is the same manager that was in sears. Somehow things ran smoothly until Jamie young was hired as a manager. Now me. I tagged and priced clothes, worked as a sales associate, put up heavy equipment, golf,camping, fishing, hunting, clothes, shoes, snacks, shirts, team attire and merchandise, under armour...the list goes on. I bust my ass there. Pos trained fire arm trained loss prevention trained. Made $7.25 hr. Pay checks sucked. Every 2 weeks. All in all I appreciate experiencing the retail business and folding shirts with and with out folding board. The team I worked with was incredible. Management has no idea how to be professional at all. It's all not going to be too well when you put a big ass store like that in Shelby. Basically they can knock the whole mall over and keep dunhams . the store has 16 different dept. Who needs our sorry mall. It's too small and people just visit Cleveland mall to eat at chick fila And exercise. Trust I know I was a top sales associate there. Worked my ass off and Jamie fired me. He's retarded ass black man. He is sorry as a manager. He fakes it to make it. He knew nothing about sports or that store after he came our whole team fell apart and I stayed strong and a leader.
