So let me just start by saying that I have been a customer here for probably about 8 to 10 years. I've had issues here and there with this practice, but have continued to come back because of the convenience and proximity. The problems I've mainly had in the past are just staff that aren't particularly friendly and veterinarians that I wouldn't necessarily trust with more serious issues. But this last time that I took my Hank there, will be the last time that I will ever take my pets to this practice. Hank has had repeated urinary tract infections, which they treat with the same antibiotic every single time. The purpose of this last appointment was so that I could speak with a vet about the pros and cons of neutering him and whether or not that would be the best option for him and help with his uti's. Everything about this particular appointment was unsettling. I walked into the front door and put Hank on the scale and the lady at the front desk just said who do we have here. I wasn't greeted with a hello....how are you doing......nothing. Just rudeness right from the start. I told her who we were and who we were there to see and she says follow me and takes me into the room and I said thank you and then she leaves. Never asked me how I was doing or said anything at all to me. Then the vet comes in which was Dr. Carey Goehle. Again, the purpose of this appointment was to analyze Hank's urine for an infection and also so I could get some information about neutering him as they had told me that this may help with the UTIs. So every question that I proceeded to ask him, he was clearly getting defensive about. So I had expressed concerns about keeping their weight in check and I was concerned about them gaining weight after they were neutered. And these were just questions and concerns because I'm a first-time lab owner and I have seen and heard time and time again how other lab owners would say that theirs gained weight after they got neutered. Well anything that I asked him, he would take offense to it. Then he recommends that Hank get an x-ray to analyze the size of his prostate. So he doesn't even come and introduce himself to Hank or pet him or anything like that. He simply throws the leash around him and yanked him out of the room. Then he said Hank pooped on the x-ray table. That is because he was scared and he has been on plenty of x-ray tables and has never pooped before. He did not try to comfort Hank in the least bit and you could clearly see that Hank was very nervous. Then we got the results and I told him that I would like to have an estimate to get both of my labs neutered and also teeth cleaning. So he leaves the room and some girl comes in to go over the estimate with me. And one of the things that was on the estimate was the ablation that Dr. Goehle had recommended because of the size of the dogs. So I asked her "this is for both of my dogs right?" and she proceeds to tell me no that the entire estimate was only for one dog. And so I mumbled under my Breath "you have got to be f:ing kidding me". I wasn't loud and I was looking down at the paper and mumbling this. So this girl proceeds to tell me not to cuss at her. I told her that I did not cuss at her and that I asked for an estimate for both of the dogs. Then I asked that she leave the room. The last time that I got an estimate which was less than two years ago to get both of the dogs neutered and their teeth cleaned, the total was $865 for both of them combined. This estimate was almost $1600 for one dog, which also included some antibiotics that he was to take for the UTI before the neutering. But even if you subtract that, that is still approximately a 200% increase, which is absolutely ridiculous and unethical. I am not going to go in there and give these people my business and be treated like this. And these prices are prices that are typically charged by specialists. These are general veterinarians and these are routine procedures. I will take my pets somewhere that is compassionate, and where their services are commensurate with the quality of care. And they sent me out of there without Hank's antibiotics and now I have to wait to get in with another vet to get him treated. All of this was unacceptable. read more

We do NOT recommend. We took our dog in for what we thought was a UTI (out of the blue he started having accidents in the house). A UTI was ruled out, but we were told he likely had cancer based on his X-rays. The Vet offered no medication for his symptoms and basically wrote him off because of his age (he's only 7). Took him to another Vet for a second opinion - more X-rays were done and no cancer was found. The new Vet prescribed meds and he's doing much better. Pretty sad we had to drive to Crofton for better pet care when we live a mile from Dunkirk Animal Hospital. read more

We live very close by to a different animal hospital and did not have a good experience with our old dog. We were not comfortable taking our new dog there. So we choose to drive 30 mins away to Dunkirk. We absolutely love Dunkirk Animal Hospital. Everyone is friendly and helpful. From the time I call to make an appt all the way till we leave it's always been a good experience. The vet we see always takes the time to listen and answer any questions I have. They always bend down and love on my dog (which he absolutely loves the attention). A visit to the vet is never scary for my dog. He actually looks forward to coming and receiving lots of attention. We always recommend when talking to others. read more

I've been in business with the Dunkirk Animal Hospital for a few months now, unfortunately due to my pup having new accidents and reoccurring bladder issues. Today she had an appointment and I found out that she has a bladder mass, covering about 1/3 of her kidney. As the veterinarian takes away my 11 year old for testing, she is brought back to me still smiling. The staff was very welcoming upon us entering and even entertained my Miki's (breed) sassy ways, being too excited for attention to step on the scale. Lol. Even after exams and giving me her results, I was given so many options moving forward. I felt comfortable about every option given and just.. want to think of what's next. Informative, very professional AND sanitary building. I hope to not return too soon, but I know who I'm calling if need be! This used to be our family's normal vet - however, we had some bad experiences with Dr. Schmeiser. We unfortunately had to euthanize our elderly dog due to advanced sarcoma. We specifically asked for Dr. Jackie, as my family knows her very well. Dr. Schmeiser came in to administer the sedative, which we appreciated as our pet was in a lot of pain. However, he then returned with a technician and was about to administer the euthanasia serum without saying ANYTHING to us. Absolutely nothing about what he was doing. Only when we asked what he was doing did he say "Oh, I thought she was suffering." We told him he wanted Dr. Jackie to perform the euthanasia and he left. He would have euthanized our dog without saying anything and without us realizing. Obviously we wanted to be petting her while she left us, and he would have robbed us of that experience. I have worked in the vet industry for five years and communication should always be a top priority. I have worked for dozens of vets and he is by far one of the worst ones I've ever met. If you are looking for someone with compassion, look elsewhere. I'm not giving one star because I love the Goehles. If you go here, ask for them specifically. read more

We have been going here for 2 years with our crazy bunch. (3 dogs & 2 cats) The staff is very friendly, always go out of their way to answer any of your questions and they seem to truly care. We've had so many vets over the years who focus on money and finding ways to maximize their income. You don't have that feeling here. They don't recommend services you don't need and don't charge extra fees for simple shot visits or stop-ins. We've had several friends switch to here and we've never heard anything but praise. read more

I started going to Dunkirk Animal Hospital since 1998 when we lived in Huntingtown. We moved down to Solomons over ten years ago and even though I am in walking distance of another vet, I would rather drive 45 minutes to come here. I am so impressed with the quality of care, the friendliness of the staff and the time they take with their patients. I recently rescued a dog that has a lot of issues and did not have any veternarian care for the first 8 years of his life. I took Charlie to Dr. Goehle as I knew I could trust him to thoroughly examine him and talk through a plan of action for each of his issues. I can't imagine taking my dog anywhere else. read more

My dog has been seen at this hospital for the past seven years. The doctors are good the staff and techs nice and I've never had a problem, until today. My dog was scheduled to have a growth removed from his elbow and have his teeth cleaned. When scheduling the appointment, I was quoted a price for both procedures. After dropping my dog off at 7:15 this morning, I received a phone call from an office staff member telling me that the quote that was given to me was low. (Found out during my conversation, it was the same staff member who quoted that figure. ) I was shocked to hear that because when dropping off my dog, I confirmed the costs with that same person and nothing was said to me at that time. The difference was $234! The original quote, was already high to begin with. Needless to say, this was very upsetting. I ended opting out and found another reputable Vet in the county. Got another quote which is considerably lower than what was quoted to me at THIS place. And this time, I got it in writing! When shopping around in person for a new vet, I found out that the wellness checkups, shots and other tests that I've paid for in the past are also higher than other animal hospitals in the county. My advice to anyone looking for a good vet is to shop around for wellness exam costs, get any procedure cost in writing and get referrals. In the long run it could save you lots of $$ and hassle. read more

NOT GOOD for dogs with anxiety, they practically kicked my dog out because he was having anxiety and wouldn't allow them to put on the muzzle. Vets should be able to work with big dogs or dogs with anxiety, they had no other solution but to kick me and my dog out... luckily i have found another vet (Chesapeake animal clinic) that is amazing and isn't scared of my dog at all because they know my dog is scared of them. They gave me anti-anxiety pills for my dogs next visit so he can get his shots in peace! read more

The website is fantastic and helpful -- a wonderful surprise. The lobby is a bit cramped (massive dogs near tiny cats), but is otherwise inviting. Everything is reasonably clean and neat, although an accident from one of the clients went unattended for quite some time. The staff was friendly and patient. I've been with Dunkirk animal hosptial for 3 years and taking all 3 of my animals here. I attempted have my puppy receive its shots. When speaking to the receptionists, on the phone they have been consistently rude for the past year. I have been told I've lied and requesting certain amount of flea and tick supplies when I did not, resulting in me having to speak to a manger. I've also had the pleasure of being hung up on by the receptionist. When I went in to speak with the receptionist (5' 3" woman with short dark hair who refused to provide her name) about her unprofessionalism she stood up and became threatening and verbally aggressive with me in front of other clients in the lobby yelling at me. She then called Dr. Schmeiser to "handle me." He was even more unprofessional, not wanting to hear my complaint and told me that I should go elsewhere with my animals. This is not appropriate behavior for someone who has been a loyal customer to this establishment. I felt ostracized and treated with increased levels of aggression from both individuals due to my race. read more

I dropped off a vehicle sample to be tested for worms that were visibly in the stool. First miscommunication is that when I was on the phone she said I don't remember her name but I could just drop it off and since she had her exam within the last year that I wouldn't know and once I got there, I in fact did oh, and I was told that my prescription couldn't go to Chewy where I normally go by I guess one of the vet techs because the front desk lady was training and she was not very nice at first because she seem to not want to take the time to explain things to me so I was told that I could get the prescription at the office and I will be around $20 and I could pick it up by the close of business. The next day I got the test results back as being negative and it was optional if I treated her for the worms but when I called back because I had questions I was told that since the store was about five hours old since I dropped it off, the worms could've disappeared and they don't test for everything and that they did not see any live worms in the stool. So once I told them that I saw the stool and I saw the worms, they said oh well you should treat them anyways and to me if they're obvious in the stool, I feel like I should be given medication at that time and I feel like it's just a money scheme even though they said, you know, they test every time But just seems a little shady again never getting to speak or see a doctor I'm at once got to talk to a real doctor so then a vet tech out on the phone again and is answering my questions and tells me my prescriptions going to be around $72 and that I have to be there by 4 o'clock to pick it up which was not what I was told yesterday so I go pick it up just in time and I asked for my records and working and healthcare assumably the vet would be the same that once on my request the records they will want to know why, or what they did wrong, and I mentioned the lack of communication between everybody and she prints the records, and just blatantly ignores my comment about the lack of communication, and then tells me my total is $68 and I said just like that that's the third price I think given the price is jumped all around and she asked if I want a receipt. Obviously I did because I want all my records from here and I left and I will not be returning and I would not recommend them because throughout this whole situation over two days, I'm not once ever got to speak to a doctor was ever offered to speak to a doctor and it was told multiple different things from prices the results time I can pick up my prescription read more

I usually use another vet that was highly recommended and is closer to our house, but I called Dunkirk Animal Hospital today because the 18-year old outdoor cat that came with our house crashed quickly today and it was after our current vet's hours. After a slow progression of failing health, she could not move her back end this afternoon. Dunkirk is open 7 days a week. I explained her situation, and they said I could come right in. The staff, who knew I wasn't a client, were so kind, compassionate, and humane. Everyone I spoke to was professional as well as sweet. Dr. Phillips was the vet that did the euthanasia procedure, which he explained thoughtfully and thoroughly. It made a hard afternoon a little easier. I would recommend them highly for their thoughtful care -- especially on a weekend at the end of their working hours! read more

I lie 30 miles from Dunkirk Animal Hosital, and I have a hospital within 2 miles of my home. I have found it worth the miles and time to take my dogs to Dunkirk. They have private waiting rooms so your dog doesn't have to sit around with others and start worrying or getting upset. The Technician and the Vet come not your private room -- for things such as blood draws or nail clipping, they take your dog away -- and they come back quickly. Usually my dogs sit next to me on the bench, and the vets examine them right there next to me -- so comfortable for the kids. Checkout is also right there -- no need to drag your dog out to the main desk and wait around worrying about other dog interactions. In addition -- every single vet is awesome. Unfortunately we have had to put down several dogs over the course of 12 years. Each time we were handled with caring, thoughtful support from all staff members. They were so respectful and caring that it made the experience bearable if that's possible at those times. Several days after being there we were greeted with a condolence card that was totally amazing and really unexpected. (I assume they do this for everyone, however, each time I have been a miserable wreck so they may have just felt really bad for me. I doubt it but wanted to throw that caveat out there just in case.) From a wellness perspective they have been equally brilliant to work with. You never feel rushed and they always take the time to go over and explain things. The website is a total bonus and value added that we did not expect. You can schedule visits, get reminders and receive helpful updates. They Suck I have been going there for years and today i go in for a Calvert County Tag and get turned away because the dog I just adopted has never been there....really I have always gotten my tags there and have never had a problem whether the animal was seen there or not...I am so sorry I am not in the habit of running a animal to a vet that does not need to see one. I took my Yorkie there for an appointment early January and the facility was great, staff were very nice and very helpful. is very thorough, explained everything to me before she checked my puppy. She even took the time necessary to answer my many questions as a new dog owner. The prices were affordable and I will definitely return. The location is not very convenient for me but I will endure the 35 min drive to get great service and walk away feeling like my puppy got the best health care. The only thing that dampened my experience a tad was that one of the ladies at the front desk acted like it would have killed her to give me something with the facility's contact info and hours of operation-especially after another helpful young lady directed me to the front desk to pick up a magnet with all of their information. We endured the sudden loss of our dog a few years ago and Dr. Goehle was compassionate and helpful in assisting us to make the most informed and reasonable decisions for our sick pup. I took my cat here due to an emergency...there are hours for non appointment/emergency visits each day....what a plus.The front desk staff/vet tech/ doctor where all very friendly. There was no rushing everyone took their time explaining to me and dealing with my cat. . The doctor explained all options and didn't try to push me in any direction. We've been taking our German Shepherd mix here for four years. There is never a wait; each visit has taken no more than 20 minutes. We have seen three different vets over the years and all have been thorough and knowledgeable. Both the vets and technicians seem genuinely interested in the well being of our dog and are gentle and caring. Additionally, the hours are convenient (I believe they open at 7), their website is helpful, the exam rooms are tidy, and they are reasonably priced. There are other vets much closer to our home but we continue to bring her here because we're so impressed by the service. read more

I've been taking our two rescues here since we got them. I've always found the front desk people to be disinterested and dismissive. Never had a problem with the vets or the techs in the back.....until today. Took my male in for an annual Lyme test. As per normal, no acknowledgement from the desk beyond asking for his weight. We got to an exam room and a tech came in. She was uncomfortable for some reason and went to get a second tech. The second girl said hi to the dog and took him into the back to draw blood. They exited the exam room and she was talking to Bluto and closed the door. A couple of seconds passed and I heard the dog barking a nervous bark. He is the least aggressive dog I've ever owned so I opened the door and asked if everything was OK. The girl came back in with the dog and said "I don't know what happened, I was two inches from his face talking sweet to him and all of a sudden he backed up and started barking. I'm afraid you'll have to muzzle him". You're two inches from the face of a dog that you've never seen before and you're amazed that he backed up and barked? I'm sure they put a note on his chart re the muzzle. I'm putting a note everywhere I can so that people know what not to do to a dog that's not yours. Don't invade their space. Don't get in their face. Spend a minute with the dog making him comfortable before you take him to a strange place away from his owners to do a procedure. I'll be looking for a new vet before the next appointment is due. read more

The best vet facility in the area. My cat suffered an extreme reaction to his vaccines; not only was Dr. Phillips kind and equanimous, but his entire staff made sure to check in regularly throughout the entire process. During my follow-up appointment I was informed--without having to ask--that the drug companies responsible for manufacturing the vaccines had been contacted; that a claim had been filed; and that I would be receiving a reimbursement check within a few weeks. The staff is great, the facility is clean, and the experience has always been outstanding. read more
