Jan 2026 I had two cats get sick on a Friday couldn't get into to my regular Veternsrian practice for several days as they were solidly booked rather than wait I took them to another vet Hospital Calvert animal. Both cats had very different issues. The first cat was having hard time walking, head was tilted and not eating much. I thought possible stroke. The Veternsrian did quick exam kept saying he was stumped then turned the cat upside down looking at her eyes said that might show him something. all the vet could say was I wish one of the other vets was here I have no idea what's wrong with this cat and no way to tell if she had a stroke. Then he suggested we take upward five headshot ( x-rays) to see if that would show him anything. My response was if you don't know what we're looking for I'm not going to the expense of an x-raying her head when it could be something else. He then went out of the office came back in and handed me some papers he got off the internet saying this is what it could be!!! In hindsight, I should've seen the incompetence and walked out of the appointment should have walked out of the appointment. On to next cat... The second cat was straining to go to the litter box, not eating much and could not jump up on couch or chair like normal and was sneezing. Vet did quick exam didn't want the stool sample I brought. He said looked like cold virus. He went to leave the room and the assistant said what about the antibiotics u want her take home his response oh yes and told her what to get. The assistant suggested to both of us that perhaps when the other vet arrives she called (the true cat vet) she would ask her about the issue and see is she could call me. The vet response that's a good idea. Now understand this, this vet barely spoke to directly to me instead he spoke to the assistant as if I was a by stander. I had to keep asking questions he had a definite problem working with clients. I am a true animal person I have a farmette and have had cats and dogs my entire life never have I encountered such blatant rude behavior and above all else This veterinarian was totally incompetent! When I got to the check out counter the receptionist handed me a quote for having the first cat X-rays I.e. between $500.00-800 to start with. For what purpose??? I noticed the so called veterinarian was joking around with the front office girls talking about carpentry and resin work he wanted to do at home never bothered to say anything to me when I left. Dr Brown who previously owned this hospital for many, many years would never have allowed this vet in his practice. Although this vet was not the veterinarian that owns the practice the owner needs to seriously look at who he hires to represent him. I will never come back nor will I recommend and I have told all my friends what happened as well. Oh...the other Veterinarian never contacted me nor did anyone else from Calvert animal hospital. The cats were then taken to my usual vet problems located and solved as much as possible my regular vet said I'll call u in two days to check up if U need me before then please call back! What a difference in professionalism experience. I would rate this experience less than one star if I could. read more

Took my small dog because of a tumor. Expected vet to use a syringe to check the cells and see if it is cancer. Vet said she does not believe in the accuracy of that. So she did nothing. Absolutely useless. Will never take my animals back there. read more

I had seen Dr Brown for many years and the practice was great. Now I call to get my new shelter adopted Dog a visit because she is sick. They were rude on the phone. Said hold please instead of Hello! Hung up on me. I called back and they ask if I am a current patient. When I said no Im new patient, the lady said then you have to wait about a month to see Dr Stotler! My friend told me he is great. But unfortunately I choose to go elsewhere where the front desk staff is more professional. Price Frederick AH 15 min down the road and so far has been very welcoming and the Vet was great and helped my adopted Dog get Well. This place has no compassion for poor sick animals that need care. Maybe they are LAZY and dont want to register new patients? Not Sure but hope management can fix it. I really did want to bring her to Dr Stottler. read more

If I could give minus stars I would. I made an appointment yesterday for my cat, his eyes are swollen and he's lethargic. They called today and cancelled my appointment through VM, said my cat was feral and we needed to drop him off in the morning to give him time to calm down! I called them and told them that my cat was not feral, we've had him for over two years, yes, we found him, but he's been in our care and home for over two years and is up to date on his rabies shot, which he received at Linda Kelley Animal Shelter. My first question, why didn't they tell me this when I made the appointment, why didn't they call me at work. To be honest, I truly believe they just didn't want to be bothered with the later appointment. The girl on the phone started rambling on about how they have to look after the safety of their staff, I didn't realize I was bringing a mountain Lion in, isn't this their business, to help sick and injured pets? I was so disgusted, I told her "that's ridiculous" and hung up the phone. I called Prince Frederick Animal Hospital, explained the history of my cat and they're seeing him in an hour and a half. My best friend and 11-year-old boxer became very ill this past week. It was unfortunately time to say goodbye, and I couldn't have asked for a more caring and generous clinic and staff to support my little buddy and us through it. Dr. Craton was fantastic and compassionate through it all, but I will take nothing away from the staff as they were amazing during and after too. $475 in December to have my dogs blood, x-rays taken to find out what I figured was wrong. A urinary tract infection. Here we are again same issue and they are trying to charge an arm And leg to do the same. My dog isn't feeling better and for all the money for tests they aren't getting it right. I had to pay $100 emergency visit but we waited a week and a half till she could go. That doesn't Seem right: I was told this is the best place in calvert but I'm not feeling like it is. Maybe it's the vet but she has seen 2 different ones. They are nice but don't seem to care if you don't have the money to pay for all the tests they want to do for the same issue that should have been resolved the first time read more

I am very pleased with the professional and courteous services provided by Calvert Animal Hospital to both my current dog and for the passing of our family dog. I was blown away by the compassion of everyone on the staff including the two ladies that handled our late dog, Thor, in his last hours here on earth. I believe in giving the honest truth when a business deserves it and Calvert Animal Hospital does deserve this praise. I will be sure to tell them if they do not in the future. 4 years ago, Dr Stotler performed surgery on my gentle giant for a growth on his eye- the surgery went fine, or so I thought. Six weeks later he was dead. I brought the dog back 4 times as something was wrong, he was in distress. Dr Stotler never saw him, Dr Noyes was concerned but when I made an appointment to follow up with her, my dog was seen by a travel vet. Two more visits with 2 other vets no answers but lots of money spent. My beloved dog collapsed in my arms & died the day before his appt with another clinic. I find it strange that Dr Stotler did not do any follow up with my dog and I blame he & Dr Noyes for his death. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG TO THIS CLINIC- their mistakes are buried, literally. read more

Great vets, not-so-great front office staff. We took our dog here for many years, and the veterinary staff always did a great job taking care of our dog and ensuring she got the best care. The front office staff / receptionists can be a bit rude and difficult to deal with, but once you get past them, the veterinary care here is incredible. The prices are reasonable, and the vets here really care about your dog. Our dog passed earlier this year, and the veterinary staff was incredibly caring and compassionate throughout the entire process, and really took their time to explain everything to us and I could tell they really cared about our dog's wellbeing. read more

Dr. Brown was our family vet for years. We took many cats and dogs to him for their initial shots, to be fixed, and whenever they needed to see the doc. Most recently, I had a kitten who wasn't eating and I took her to see him. He wasn't quite sure what the cause was, but gave me high protein wet food and a syringe to hand feed her for a few days. As it turned out, she had just swallowed an ear plug (still amazed at how she sneakily managed to steal and eat it), so she was fine. She went back for her shots and has been a happy, healthy kitty since. I moved to California and have still not found a vet that I like and trust as much as Dr. Brown. He makes your pet feel comfortable and always tells them positive things (pretty kitty, nice dog, etc). He's one of a kind, I highly recommend him. read more

This is actually such a shame because i have always loved and trusted this facility and their staff (my pet previously saw Dr. Stotler). I had a 13 year old cat that became very ill with a liver condition. I would drive from Baltimore city to have my pet seen by these people. I took my pet for an appointment to get follow up blood work and it was the worst experience I've had. The receptionist who took my call to schedule this appointment did not make the appointment with the appropriate vet (I did not know this until I showed up). Instead the appointment was made with DR. HARRISON (remember that name), who I was not familiar with. While I was waiting with my pet in the exam room, I heard Dr. Harrison shuffle up to the door, flip through what I assume was my file and HUFF AND PUFF about how she knows nothing about "this cat" and she doesn't have time. I was then left waiting there for an additional 20 minutes with a scared and shaking cat. When Harrison finally waddled into the room, not only did she not look at or greet my pet in any kind of way, she essentially blamed me for her having to take care of my pet. she then told me for blood work that I would need to leave my pet there and come back to get her later. I told her that anytime bloodwork has been done, it's done during the visit and I take my pet with me. She told me that bc they were going to put her under anesthesia, it was an "all day thing". I should note that my pet has to be SEDATED during each visit with CAH and her internal medicine vet. This isn't new for me and I know it's not an "all day thing". I politely mentioned that I live in Baltimore and wasn't made aware of the drop off policy. Harrison told me she only has fifteen minutes to see each patient, which obviously made me feel as though my sick pet was unimportant and an inconvenience. It should also make YOU, THE READER, weary of the level of care you're getting. I've never heard of a vet or human doctor telling a patient they only have 15 minutes to spend on you! She agreed to do the blood work after she "checked with someone". At this point, I was visibly upset and confused about what I had done wrong bc this hag has gone out of her way to make me uncomfortable Once they took my pet to the back to have the blood drawn, the front desk team was openly talking about me. I don't think they knew I was the "girl from Baltimore with the cat". I asked if Harrison would be discussing the physical exam and blood work with me. Rather than take me back into an exam room, she just started yelling from the back of the reception area over the counter. She didn't even have the decency to approach the counter and speak to me. I asked that she come closer because both of the front desk girls were trying to take phone calls. Not only was she unwilling to describe to me what she noticed during the physical examination, I actually had to extract information out of her based on things that I saw. She blew me off completely. My pet clearly had an ear infection and some type of irritation around her mouth (I can confirm this bc I took her to a specialist in Baltimore shortly after this visit who prescribed topical medications). Finally, they bring me my groggy pet who keeps a stuffed animal in her crate for comfort that's when this random, POORLY AGING GRIT who works in the back said "I love that she has a stuffed animal, does she like it?" And before I could even say "yes", she snapped at me "BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T LIKE IT BACK THERE!" with a scowl on her face! it was so rude and aggressive. So much so, that the receptionist checking me out whipped her head around to look at the old grit in shock. Every second of this appointment was awful. I left in tears and cried nearly the entire way home. I will never bring another pet here. Dr. Harrison is awful and has no business caring for pets. Unfortunately, my cat passed away. I would never bring another pet here. read more

I visited this Vet October 2018 when my Golden Retriever was not eating for help. She was only 9. The Vet decided my dog had not eaten on her own for 10 days because I changed her food to grain free. She did not feel my dogs stomach or chest area and gave me prescriptions to entice her to eat. One week later I was still forcing food down my dogs throat and I called and requested more or the prescriptions and they said they would mail them. The vet never called me to check why I needed more. Now my dog had been force fed for about 17 days. I decided to take my dog to a different vet who is old and experienced and the Vet got on the floor and felt around her stomach and chest and said he could feel tumors. He quickly did a sonogram and he and another vet at their practice looked at it and could clearly see tumors where he felt them. My dog was put to sleep one day later. This was a very serious WRONG Diagnosis! Don't use this Vet! After Dr. Brown retired and sold it the place is not good. read more

I normally take my cats to a cat only clinic in Arlington, but there are some services, in this instance teeth cleaning, for which they charge just a bit too much for my budget. My former boss lives in Calvert County and takes all of his animals to Calvert Animal Hospital. After getting an estimate from my standard clinic for the teeth cleaning, I called CAH. The difference of several hundred dollars made the time I would spend driving from Alexandria to Owings, MD worth it. The price was so good a friend had me take his dog for a cleaning as well. CAH is a no nonsense clinic as is Doc Brown. He is firm yet gentle with the animals (and their owners) and has a great country-southern accent. Normally for services like teeth cleaning or spaying/neutering you drop off the animal before 10 am and pick them up between 4 and 6 pm. When Doc Brown saw on the chart that I had driven from Alexandria, he made arrangements to get the dog and cat in early so that I was able to pick them up by noon and avoid an extra trip. read more

We LOVE Dr. Brown! He's the best...he truly loves his profession and all the animals he treats. His gentle ways and slow, Southern drawl put everyone at ease - humans & animals alike! He's been taking excellent care of our dog, Virgil, for 7 years now. Dr. Brown sings quietly to Virgil when he examines him, never makes you feel that he's in a rush to get to his next patient, and answers all your questions. He has a terrific sense of humor and a delightful personality! Also, we love his lobby area which is decorated with antiques and vintage veterinary implements & animal-inspired art. Have been going there for years, but since Dr Brown retired I would only see Dr. Stotler. He diagnosed cardiomyopathy in our Westie and treated her. However our last visit was with a different vet ( new?) my husband took her. I said no vaccines only check up and nail clip. Well he gave her Lepto and Lyme. She went in spunky ( at 16!) and left lethargic . 3 days later died of kidney failure. ( Diagnosed from a different hospital ) We are devastated. Never going back with our other dog. Who gives a 16 year old dog with cardiomyopathy Lepto and Lyme vaccine??!! read more

If you have a cat, DO NOT BRING IT TO THIS PLACE!! Our cat needed to get caught up on his shots and to see if they could examine him to find out why he was vomiting after eating. Initially, we were greeted by one of the staff. She took us back to the exam room, asked us some questions, and weighed him. No problems to this point. She left and said the doctor would be in. While we waited in the examination room, all we could hear was loud barking dogs on both sides of the room. Our cat cowered in the corner for nearly 30 minutes while we waited for the doctor to come in. When the doctor came in, the staff member literally grabbed our 14lb cat by the back of his neck and put him on the table. WE COULDN'T BELIEVE OUR EYES!! My wife was in shock, and so was I. Instead of causing bodily injury to our cat, all she had to do was to ask one of us to pick him up and put him on the exam table. We were told that our cat was too aggressive for her to examine (he wasn't. total lie). The doctor said she would have to prescribe a calming medication before they could examine him, which meant that I would have to take another day off to bring him back. NO THANKS!! After we told them we were not going to have them give our cat care, the doctor and young lady staff member unceremoniously left the room. Very rude. We have had several cats in the past that we have received care at other vets' offices and have NEVER been treated in such a disrespectful fashion. This place is all about trying to prescribe unnecessary medication to animals. We are considering filing a complaint, or more, against this business for handling our cat in such an aggressive manner. read more

I have been bringing my pets to Calvert Animal hospital for years. We originally saw Dr. Brown and he was by far the best vet I have ever had!! I was worried when Dr. Brown retired because he was so kind and gentle to the animals. However, Dr. Stotler has definitely been a wonderful addition/replacement as the main vet at CAH. He is so kind and caring and truly loves animal. We have had a few somewhat urgent calls and need to be seen and they always have time to see a pet in need. They are extremely thorough and so pleasant to talk to on the phone. I hate not being able to accompany my dogs in for their visit due to Covid however I know they are being treated wonderfully by the staff and the physicians!! Dr. Stotler always goes above and beyond to ensure his 4 legged patients are getting the best care possible!! I cannot thank them enough for the amazing care they continue to give my fur babies!! Two dogs, two mis-diagnoses that cost me over $3000 and put one of my dogs through an unnecessary abdominal surgery. My other dog was diagnosed with a partially torn ACL and were told we had to wait for it to completely tear before surgery could be done. Not true as my parents' dog had a partial tear in both knees and was able to have surgery immediately. Took our dog to MASH for a second opinion, and it turned out she had a knee that kept dislocating and it was causing lameness. We will be finding a new vet for our family members as we can no longer trust these people. read more

I have used this vet for the last 3 years. Until recently, I just kept going back, but I'm now seeing that it's not one vet, or two vets that are the problem, it's most of them. I had one vet do an awesome job on an infected ear, but the same vet did an anal gland cleaning when I told her he has skin issues. This dog had recently been diagnosed with a skin issue that required special food and shampoo, I was hoping for a new prescription for the food and shampoo, it wasn't given. I took another dog in for a dental, and the muscle in his back leg looked odd when I got him back, she said she could not explain it. Another one of my dogs was taken in for a second opinion on a heart murmur, the vet (a different vet than before) told me she was partially def in one ear, and was not a vet that worked there, she only did house calls for different kinds of animals. However, when I recently requested the records for this visit, it was noted that she did not hear a heart murmur. This same dog with the heart murmur also has G.I. problems, I was seeing this vet for those issues because we were changing her preventative's to see if that was a cause. She said come back in if there were neurological signs from the meds, if changing them up did not work. There were neurological signs, and her G.I. issues continued even with the prescribed meds. On the next appt, there was no vet on duty. From then on, I decided, this probably wasn't the right vet for me. However, I kept taking my dogs in for nail trims. During one of these appts, the Dr. Seeing my heart problem dog, Recommended another vet at this office to do a sonogram and was back from knee surgery. I heard him with a patient at the front desk who told him she didn't need any preventative's because her teacup dog was an indoor dog. Yikes! He didn't tell her MD is full of mosquitos, and they come inside the house and pose a threat, he said nothing. My last encounter was a recent emergency with yet another one of my dogs. In August I had testing and a blood test done on him and that vet told me he had a hematoma on his leg, she thoroughly explained it to me. I took this dog, to this vet, and again saw a whole new vet, who told me it was a carcinoma and to quickly get it removed, without a good explanation, and contradicting everything I told her the other vet had said. This dog is an 11 year old shepherd mix. Whether or not she was trying to scare me into a surgery, or she really did think he needed it, I have to wonder why she was so adamant on him getting it removed at his age, and when I was previously given a completely different diagnoses less than four months earlier. My trust level with them has plummeted. read more

Very unhappy with recent experience. Had a great experiences when Doctor Brown was running the place about 5 years ago, had dogs and cats treated there with no issues. Now it seems there is new management and the profit motive is in high gear here. After looking at various options to get our kitten spayed and finding the earliest appointment was in March we decided to go to CAH since they could get her in within a week. I was required to bring her in the day before to be evaluated ($54) and then drop her off the next morning for the procedure. When I dropped her off I was given an estimate of $325 - $375 for the procedure, I had been given an estimate on the phone of approximately $150 - $175.......I went ahead and left her but got increasingly exorcised about the cost. About an hour later I called them back and told them to cancel the procedure. I picked her up later and was required to pay for bloodwork which had already been done before I called back ($45). Made an appointment for the Spay and Neuter nook in Davidsonville which quoted a price under $100......just have to put up with a horny cat for another month now....... read more

We have been going here ever since we moved into the area. Our dog, an elderly poodle, has received excellent attention. They do not push procedures and medications or treatments, but instead prefer to talk with the owners and get their input for further treatment. The prices are also very reasonable. They also accept walk-ins although you might have to wait a bit. read more

I am updating my previous review. I initially gave 2 stars. I was not impressed by this practice and I still am continually frustrated by the wait times. But we started seeing Dr. Stotler and that changed things. We love him. He is very knowledgeable, explains things well and was great with our aging dog. I highly recommend him. Prices are still good too. Now if only they could come up with a better system so appointments aren't waiting for an hour because an emergency came in and took precedent. My suggestion: have 2 vets there on weekends-one for emergencies/backup and the other for scheduled appointments. read more

If you are looking for an excellent veterinarian, compassionate but knowledgeable AND not into charging you for extras when it's not necessary, go and see Dr. Stotler and/or Dr. Harrison. We started going there back in 2013 and when we moved to Crofton, MD, we chose to drive almost an hour to keep having Dr. Stotler check our two dogs. It's worth it every time. He gives your pets the attention they need and compare to many others around in Calvert County, Charles County and Anne Arundel, the fees charged are pretty fair. We tried to visit other vets in our area of Anne Arundel County but they all charged a lot and are always pushing for extra testing when it's not necessary. After raising dogs for almost 20 years, we understand many of the ins and out of pet preventive health and Dr. Stotler is the best we have seen. He now feels like family and he has treated all of our dogs. read more

If you're looking for a good old fashioned country vet that's in it for the animals and not the money, you've found it with Dr. Brown at Calvert Animal Hospital. While Doc Brown doesn't have the best "bedside manner" he is gentle and knows what he's doing when it comes to taking care of my pets, which I would gladly trade any day. I called once after hours (unknowingly) and he actually answered the phone...how many places can you say that about these days? The prices there are much less expensive, especially for spay/neuter, fecal, and urinalysis than another vet I was using originally. They do their testing in-house which keeps the cost down and provides much faster results than having to send samples away. I definitely recommend Calvert Animal Hospital and wish I had taken my animals there to begin with! read more

New to the area, just retired from the military. After going to Andrews Air Force Base they said our Viszla had a tumor on his foot that needed immediate surgery. Got in right away with Dr. Stotler, set up surgery that week. Our dog had the blood work done and unfortunately had a low platelet count. We had to come in every week for blood work and antibiotics and steroids trying to figure out what was causing it. It lasted 4 1/2 months and lucky for us he was able to have surgery. The surgery went very well and I felt very confident in our veterinarian. Our dog has recovered and just received his last blood work and is out of the woods. Only the best service from the vet and his technicians. Only reason a 4 instead of 5, there were several times when we had to wait over 30 minutes from our scheduled time to get in and didn't find a couple of the receptionists very customer friendly. read more

Can't say enough good things about Calvert Animal Hospital, the Vets, and the Vet Assistants. Many years ago, Dr. Brown helped us through the trauma of having to put our family dog down. He was compassionate through the process and even followed up with a touching letter afterwards. After of couple dogless years, we jumped back in with 2 puppies. First stop, Dr. Brown, who always provides great care. More recently, we met Dr. Stotler. He helped us work our way through a serious medical issue for one of the dogs, clearly explaining the problem and handling the transfer to the specialty hospital for emergency surgery.
