We chose this funeral home because was in the hometown of where my grandfather grew up and is near the church and cemetery. The funeral director did a good job of guiding us through the process of paperwork and procedure. The funeral director was not very warm or consoling so I can't say that I liked him very much, but he WAS very efficient and appropriate. My grandfather was very thrifty and insisted that we would not spend a lot of money on his funeral. The funeral director was understanding and did not pressure us or try to guilt us into spending more money. We did have to pay up front for everything (which is the industry standard) but it IS shocking when you have to shell out thousands of dollars in one sitting. We got an excellent price (2,000 dollars less than we spent on another family member over 10 years ago at another funeral home,) so that was a plus. Everything was as we asked it to be and they humored our quirky requests. I do NOT think however, that they did a very good job of making my grandfather look like himself. He looked like a stranger, which actually made it much easier for me and my family. So my review of Marvil is mixed. But I would definitely suggest Marvil if you are on a tight budget and live in the Darby/South Philadelphia area.

Such was the case recently when a friend of ours held a beautiful service for her mother here. The building and decor is low key and modern, clean, and non-denominational. We especially loved the complimentary "thank you" provided by the home - forget me not seeds to plant in honor of the loved one. How absolutely wonderful. The room the service was held in was roomy and comfortable. Kudos for making what could have been a very sad day one that was filled with pure love.

When we lost my father recently, my two sisters were the ones who had to deal with the funeral arrangements. Luckily, they were in the hands of one of the nicest funeral directors you would ever want to meet. That's Rocco. He guided them very gently through the many decisions they had to make, was very calming and sympathetic to my mother, didn't try to upsell us on anything and generally made what is a most painful experience one that honestly... wasn't too bad. He thought of everything, really, he did and took notice of even the smallest of things. For example, at the funeral mass, when he moved the flowers from one area to another, he was literally on his hands and knees discreetly picking up fallen flower petals off the floor. His timing was impeccable and kept the services on time and the crowds in line. After the funeral was over, we panicked for a moment because no one remembered to write down who sent which flowers so we could thank them. No worries - Rocco had already collected them and provided the cards to us later. I will be forever grateful for his many small kindnesses and treatment of our family during this difficult time. At first everything seemed appropriate filled out the paperwork 11 days after our loss on January 23 which included a $595 fee to transport our child from Bryn Mawr to Broomall. My husband spoke to John the day he emailed the paperwork who told him he would follow up once he was in their care. Now 3 weeks later I found out from the social worker at Bryn Mawr hospital that my son was picked up by them on January 20. We were NEVER called by John to inform us his remains had been picked up nor did he tell my husband when he spoke to him literally 3 DAYS after he was already in his care. I called 3 times this week to get answers as to what was going on prior to contacting Bryn mawr and my doctors office only to be told John would "call me back" which he never did even after I was crying and pleading that someone would give me information. John Burdsail lied, he told his other employees and Bryn Mawr hospital social worker he tried to contact us numerous times because he never received our paperwork. He had my number and 2 numbers for my husband. The worst part of the whole thing was the negligence of the other staff who never personally followed up with us. Not to mention a lot of funeral homes charge NOTHING when a young baby dies.. I transferred my son to Donohue Funeral Home to be taken care of without fee. As a bereaved parent with other young children at home I am appalled by the way we were treated. This man needs to be fired. The loss of a child is the worse kind of loss and I still can't believe my son had been in their "CARE" for 3 weeks without a single call to figure out where our paperwork was..

Losing a loved one is a really tough thing. You are totally overwhelmed emotionally and faced with…read morethe daunting task of planning a funeral -- not to mention being the liaison between your immediate family and pretty much everyone you all know. It is quite a challenge for anyone, even someone who is hyper-organized like me. Bob and Erich Wetzel were amazing as they helped guide us through this very difficult process. From the first contact by phone to our in-person meeting to plan the ceremony to the ceremony itself, the Wetzel family took care of our family like we were actual family. It is no mystery to me why they have been in business for more than a century. We worked closely with Bob and especially Erich, who impressed even this 24/7 plugged in gal with his speed of his reply to any email I sent at any time of day. I think at most I waited 2 hours for a reply ever, and many times I had a reply within a few minutes. In addition to the tremendous respect, care and professionalism shown to our family, I think it's important to also note that the Wetzels brought a bit of good common sense and even, yes, a bit of humor. They helped us transition from that place where you're just shell-shocked that your loved one has died to the place where you are remembering good stories and laughing with each other -- celebrating someone's life rather than mourning their loss. They were low-pressure and made us feel like the only thing we needed to focus on was making the best decisions for us. There was no pressure to buy the most expensive option or be fancier than we wanted to be. (We just aren't really fancy people, after all.) The Wetzels were tremendous communicators, with clear and concise directions. They answered all of our questions, gave us material in writing, included reminders for items we might forget and also, as I mentioned above, entertained every single question we had at all hours of the day. Due to this excellent communication, there were no surprises and the ceremony was exactly how we expected it to be and was beautiful. One other thing I wanted to mention: This is the first time I've planned a funeral, but I do feel like one thing you are paying the funeral home to do is to help take care of all the nitty gritty details for you. When you are planning a funeral, you don't want to be bothered with figuring out how to obtain death certificates, how to file for a permit or how to interact with the cemetery. Wetzel and Son was able to do all of these things for us with very minimal information or effort needed on our part. You are so overwhelmed during this time that you really need someone to help you with the details, and the Wetzels were pretty much flawless in this respect. They dealt with the cemetery arrangements, filed the right permits, put the paperwork through for death certificates and probably a bunch of things I don't even know about. For the ceremony day, they made sure the flowers were all in place on time, they ensured that everyone in our party made it to the proper place, and they even stood by to help the ladies wearing heels navigate the site. They even had a relationship with the restaurant where we had the luncheon following the ceremony and placed a discreet call to the restaurant once our ceremony started to give an exact guest count and the approximate time of arrival. These details matter for sure, but it is such a relief to hand them off to someone you trust and not worry about them yourself. Even things like making sure all of the cards from the flower arrangements made it into our hands after the ceremony were all taken care of before we could even think to do them. A+ all the way. Worth every penny we paid and then some.

My Father was cremated, and through a strained familial relationship, I was under the impression his cremains were collected soon after by another family member. Many years later, I learned no one had collected his remains. Now in 2025, and being fairly certain it was a fruitless call, but desperately trying to correct for my great failure, I contacted Peppler to see if they could at least point me in the direction of where my fathers remains may have ultimately been placed. To my great shock and greater relief, his cremains were still in the possession of the home; 15 years later! Their kindness and dedication carried forward into coordinating the quick shipping of my Father's cremains to me in Florida where my family now lives.
