It is the shortest trail however it is very steep and even though I'm from Massachusetts and I used to climb this mountain every year growing up, this was a challenge for me. I live in Florida and it's flat I had my map, a bottle of water, a protein bar, my phone and my windstorm whistle (the world's loudest). I felt pretty safe. With a lot of huffing and puffing and some encouragement by a few hikers along the way, I made it to the top. Just as I exited the trail, a park ranger stopped me and notified me that the summit was closed due to blasting! He said that by the time I go back down, I might be able to get to the summit. It was rather a disappointment, but I just laughed about it. Quirky things like this had happened my whole trip up to Massachusetts. On the way down, I found a walking stick that someone had made out of a branch and it really helped me because the rocks were huge and it was hard for me to maneuver. I then decided that I was going to take my shoes off and go, barefoot like I did as a child and it helped tremendously as my feet had better grip than with the shoes on. Once I hit the crossroads between trails and it was dirt, I had to put my shoes back on. I met a woman near the end of the trail and she hikes the pine tree trail all the time just for exercise. We talked until we hit the parking lot of the visitor station. Christine sells upcycled winter fashion. Drove up part way and parked at an overlook then walked to the top in the after heat. Beautiful vista of Nashoba Valley and Worcester county. You can see Mount Monadnock well but not Boston so much but as New England weather changes so do the vistas. Peaceful calm and very much worth the trip. Great memories of epic hikes. I love coming here because this place will always be home to me. Mount Wachusett, come check it!! =D

This is the shorter side- but still long enough of a hike. It took about an hour each way. Beautiful at the top and we had a 360 of New Hampshire and Massachusetts. It was kept SO clean that it was just so beautiful. When hiking, we saw wildlife, so just be prepared. Recommendation: bring a lunch with you and go mid day. It's beautiful to sit at the top of the mountain and eat!

Great converted Rail Trail in the Gardner/Winchendon area. It's a total of 11 miles long, meaning…read moreyou could get a 22 mile bike ride in. It's technically in 3 sections. The sections connect either by riding on dirt paths or the road. We parked right on Rt 140, as the trail crosses 140. We rode north to Rt 12, where we rewarded ourselves with an ice cream stop at Little Anthony's/Little Lizzie's. The trail continues on to the center of Winchendon, where there are 3 more parking lots. Since it is a rail trail, it is relatively flat. Not too many people on the trail, so we were able to spend the ride 2 abreast chatting. We passed a few walkers, other bikers, and even a skate boarder. There is ample shade on the trail which is super nice. Just wish I lived closer.

This is our first time staying at a DCR campground west of 495, simply because none of them have…read morewater and electric. Now we have a basic solar kit to keep the batteries charged I was ready to go for it. This place is BEAUTIFUL. Pros and cons aside for a minute, we didn't want to leave. My husband is the beach lover but said this was probably his favorite we've camped at so far. (Granted some of it had to do with it being less than perfect weather and come Sunday morning we had almost the whole section to ourselves.) In our opinion the north side is nicer, and more set up size-wise for trailers. Any site from 101-112 is truly lake side and you can put your kayak or canoe in the lake right from there. We stayed at 116, and that section is more of a steep drop off but you still have wonderful lake views. But, it is also set up somewhat awkwardly with having to drive over the grass with not super clear markings. (119 is in front of 116 FYI. We felt bad setting up as we blocked some of their view.) That said, if you camp with friends, esp. tent camping it's a great area to reserve. The row of pull-through sites one up from the lake-side still offer a great water view and nice privacy between. The drawback is that if you are a family with young kids the access to the beach/swimming area is over at the east side. The bathrooms on the north side are small, very rustic and don't have dishwashing stations. However the ladies room shower has been updated to a real shower head and dial control that will let you regulate the hot water and stays on, not like the push button ones at Scusset or Salisbury! They were as clean as they could be, meaning they are old with an eroded cement floor so not much could be done. Oh and other reviews have mentions the traffic noise from 202 is loud at those sites that are nearest to roadway, and yes, we rode our bikes over there and it was terrible. And FYI some of the east side noise travels across the lake if you are at 113-118. Overall a totally different experience from Horseneck Beach, Scusset or Salisbury if you've been to those, but we really enjoyed it.

I have been here twice, not to camp but to enjoy the park. The first time was maybe 17 years ago…read moreand the second time recently. The park has changed little though due to covid staffing levels there is no one to take payments so it is now free! Staff were very friendly both times. On the initial visit I had a child and dog in tow and while pets are not allowed in the pond they let us know they could splash along the riverbed which made for a fun pastime. This time due to the drought one of the branches of the river leading to the spillway was largely dried up, but the other was gurgling along. The water was a great temperature for a hot day but is muddy, and I came out with my arms brown from dirt. There are also tadpoles which may be a plus or minus for you. By moving deeper you hit water with a current that is cooler, so you can go where you feel comfortable. No lifeguards were on duty but the roped in areas for swimming were small. To cool off you will do fine, but serious swimmers will be disappointed. For a low key destination geared to family fun this place is solid.

Pop ups can pretty well go anywhere but some of low 40s require some serious backing skills. Sites wooded mixed conifer. Yurts and the 70/ sites near the showers and new washrooms but al near the noise of rte 202. This is a nice place to camp with friends or family for a weekend or extra long weekend.
