The lake bottom in the swim area is covered with beer cans, tons of broken glass and all kinds of assorted trash. Really gross. Do not go in the water without shoes. The beach is just a narrow strip along the road with a boat ramp. The area is very noisy with traffic and trucks idling. On the positive side, it seems to be open to non residents year round.

the beach itself is nice. the water was a very enjoyable temperature and not too crowded. be aware…read moreif you don't live in marlborough it does cost $20 to get in. if id known this ahead of time we might have gone somewhere else but i figured we'd try it out. bathrooms were clean with a shower outside to rinse off with so that was nice. however, when we arrived there were 2 roped off areas. one was crowded and one only had one person swimming in it. we set up stuff near the less crowded one and went in. the lifeguard then yelled at us not to swim in that area even though we are still unsure why. the entire time we were there the lifeguards were insufferable. they yelled about the smallest things like parents carrying their kids on their shoulders. for $20 i expected a bit more so we probably won't be back considering there are just so many other beaches to go to in the area that are free.

Perfect for kids! Safe location. Clean water. Not too many people. Quiet. Nice playground!read more

Nevertheless, it is a beautiful, easy hike in the fall! In order to get to the trail if you're going south on Lyman, you'll turn off on Hospital Road and go towards the lake. There is a paved parking lot. Note that there are no bathrooms or water fountains at the trail. There may be some at the beach area but we didn't make it there because the trail ended and we turned around. As a Floridian, I really enjoyed the lakeside hike to see some gorgeous fall colors!

There is a walking/hiking trail on the backside of the lake that is dog friendly (most are off-leash) . . . unfortunately many people with large dogs don't pick up their dog's s#!t, so watch your step. Cons are that, no floaties are allowed, only coast guard approved PFDs are allowed, no skipping stones, no horseplay, etc. there also porta-potties in season. Did I say picture perfect? Idyllic. This is the best New England has to offer. Yes it is residents only but you can bring guests.

There is a lot of construction and swimming, but it would be so nice for one small corner to be off limits to swimming and have benches just for a peaceful aspect. It's a beautiful area though and the visitor center is well done. Lots of neat information and a fun gift shop.
