Loved views and the rainforest vibe of the trail. There were some interesting trees along the trails. Old grown trees, one has a massive root system. Another with a root that wrap around the base of another tree. The climb up is easy, with multiple view locations along the way of Manoa Valley, mountain ranges and Honolulu. If you want a fairly quick morning hike or want to combine with another this is a nice one to do. Although easy wear good shoes/boots bring water, especially if no breeze (humid). I would not do if it looks like heavy rain, looks like water would flow down trail in some areas.

The trail itself isn't all that visible and it's pretty dangerous. and obviously, don't stand too close to the side bc there are false ledges. Definitely BRING GLOVES because there are ropes along the way during some of the narrower parts of the trail and you could easily get cut and then possibly an infection from touching the dirty rope if it cuts you. Also, don't use the railings to support yourself because they're very old and they'll probably break with some pressure. Bring lots of water and snacks because this hike will take a longg time. Some parts may be muddy if you go in the early morning or after it has rained. The view was very nice being able to see all the greenery and tree tops in the mountain. It's a fun hike if you're with people that are fun and make sure everyone knows what theyre getting into because again, this is a super long hike.

Followed most of the loop trail on Alltrails, although we took slightly different route on the right side of loop which did add extra miles and elevation. We ended up hiking 7 miles. The weather was good and not too much mud. We did wear crampons the entire hike. The very long muddy hill down to the stream with ropes for aid is doable, however probably best not to do on rainy day. The stream was easy to cross with water running low in the crossings. Be prepared for long steep climbs up and down. There were a number of downed trees to go over or under. Alltrails rates the hike Hard. Glad I went back to experience the full loop.

It's a nice half day hike taking anywhere from 5 to 6 and a half hours if you're with a group depending on how often your take breaks and if you decide to dip in the streams. We usually take the route with 3 stream crossings and a steep uphill cardio burning climb. It's a great workout overall, they don't call it hills for nothing. I don't recommend this hike unless you are with Someone familiar with this area. It is easy to get lost and disoriented with many side trails.

Waterfalls are meant to be chased, especially after Tropical Storms and heavy rain! (Just don't be dumb and hike during those dangerous conditions.) Located deep into Kalauao Valley in 'Aiea, this hike showcases the raw beauty Oahu has to offer. This trail is located off of the well-known 'Aiea Loop trail. Make your way to Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area and park on the second level parking once you enter the camping grounds. There, you'll see restrooms and the head of 'Aiea Loop Trail. Be sure to lock your vehicles and not to leave any valuables. Start heading onto the 'Aiea Loop Trail (park opens at 7:00am FYI). Within about 15 minutes of walking along the Loop trail, you'll come across your first fork. Take the LEFT fork. It's a pretty obvious fork. Follow the ribbons. The next fork is a little less obvious. If you see a tower for power lines, you're heading in the right direction. Keep going past the power line tower. You'll seem like you're headed straight (not going down yet.) It'll seem like you are just staying on the ridge for quite a while, but just look for a pink little ribbon hidden on the right side. You'll see a mango tree (which there's a few) but you'll take a RIGHT this time (kind of like a U turn.) The mango tree has a pink bottle cap on it as well as carvings in the trunk (LANZ.) Once you see this mango tree on the right, make almost like a U turn and just keep following the trail which takes you down, down, down into the valley. It's steep, could be wet, just be careful. There's a portion that you can use a rope. It's up to you. Once you hear the stream, you'll follow it as it leads you to the falls. You can cross the stream as many times as you see fit. We found it more difficult going there and probably crossed nearly 7-8 times but on the way back, we crossed about 3-4 times. Just be on the lookout for ribbons on your side. If you see them, there's a high chance you'll have to cross and you'll see the ribbons on the opposite side. Some mentioned passing a "wrong way" rock, but we didn't see this. Just keep following the stream and VOILA, you've made it to the falls. There's a short path that leads you to the lower and upper tiers of the falls. If you jump, just be careful. There's been quite a few hiking accidents on the news lately. Better be safe than to be on the news. On the way up, it's pretty steep and can be extremely exhausting. Take breaks as needed. Honestly, we went on a day that actually rained that morning. We didn't find the hike to be extremely muddy or slippery. In fact, I thought it was relatively safe compared to some of the ridge hikes I've been on. Total hiking time (including a 15 minute stop at the falls): just under 3 hours. I believe the hike is approximately 3.5-4 miles. Tips: 1) Wear long pants or long socks. If you want to jump in the pool, bring a change of clothes. 2) Bring extra socks/shoes/slippers in your car. Your feet will probably be wet by crossing the stream. 3) If pants or long socks aren't your thing, bring mosquito repellent. 4) Bring water because you'll want it after that trek back UP the valley. 5) Go slowly until you find each fork. 'Aiea Loop Trail isn't the most exciting so you don't want to end up doing that!

Seems popular to come to walk their doggos, runners, bike ride, bring their kids. It's flat and paved the whole way with the exception of going to side gravel when you need to pass others. Pretty casual and very relaxing walk. I always come here whenever I'm in Kailua and need a peaceful walking spot after eating. It's easy to stop here and only takes about 35-40 minutes each way (for a very casual pace walk). Probably faster if you run or speed walk. About 3 miles long. You can turn back anytime though! Parking lot easily accessible. P.S. wear sunscreen! It's not shaded and can get quite hot during the daytime. We love coming for sunsets so it's much cooler around that time.

The entrance is about 200m from the McDonalds on the sane side of the road. Park your vehicle in the Ko'olau Shopping Center parking lot and walk carefully along the guardrail along Kamehameha highway heading towards Kaneohe. The Trail is marked but the first couple hundred meters are tough and uphill. After a rain, the thick clay turns to a reddish "gumbo" clay like consistency that is best tackled using trekking poles. Most of the hike is covered with only a few open spaces. The reward is the trail's terminus that ends at a WWII reinforced concrete artillery observation post and fire control center. You have a 180 deg or thereabouts view of K-Bay and the welcome breezes provide a welcome respite prior to the downhill return along the same trail. If you bring keiki please watch and control them as the fortifications show signs of 70+ years of decay and sections are quite slippery. Plan on 2-3 hours depending on hiking ability. Recommend insect repellent, water, hat, poles, and good hiking boots. Mahalo for reading my review.

When researching it on Alltrails found that it connected with a number of other trails and will take you to Manoa Falls as well. Although our plan was to hike awhile a turn back. Interesting variety of landscapes from lush moist creek area, pine trees, ferns to dryer ridge area. The surface moves between roots, mud, rocky, steps to wood planks in marshy areas. Variety of views along the way. The trail can be narrow with steep drop offs. We enjoyed the hike clocking at least 10 miles with elevation change of more than 1700 feet. It's rated hard although I would rate it as intermediate level. Bring lots of water, snacks. Wear sturdy boots, I crampons in case of slippery muddy hills, poles come in handy. Alltrails is handy to stay on the trail.

We weren't completely wrong...it does lead to the Hawaii Nature Center but is a separate trail. This is a super short trail that starts where you park your cars to do the Makiki Loop Trail. You can walk this way to get to the Hawaii Nature Center. This is the more scenic way instead of walking on the concrete road. It's a nice little walk if you have some time and just want to sit in nature since there is a bench.
