I came very briefly- I wanted to see sea turtles! But note to self and to all: probably come when it's cooler in the day! Turtles were probably swimming in the cooler water during the hottest time of the day so didn't see many turtles. Just wanted to observe them- I advise do not bother them! Like Yellowstone park- just observe and do not touch! The beach looked a bit murky and was rockier than other beaches. But there were people paddleboarding out there. Parking was abundant, even on a Sunday. Getting there, you go through the small town. Roads are always busy but you pass by some good food trucks and the infamous Giovannis shrimps truck. If you go passed it towards the beach, there is a park and ride lot. You can park there for free and walk to the town. read more

(Visited 05/21/23 SU @ 1:00pm): All hail for a lazy day exploring this North Shore town and its beach park that translates to the "house of the frigate bird". After an early morning dim sum meal with fellow Yelpers, a friend and I decided to continue our lazy Sunday and made an afternoon excursion to O'ahu's North Shore Hale'iwa Town and relaxed on Hale'iwa Beach Park. The weather was beautiful, we've already been up for hours, had a decent amount of food in our bellies, so now it was time to get into the car and just drive. My friend had never been to this town which was one of my favorites on the island, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to show her around. Would she find this as charming of a place as I did!? EXPERIENCE After we drove for nearly 45 minutes, we finally arrived to Hale'iwa Town and crawled through the one-road thoroughfare as we took in all the sights and sounds until we parked the car, and calmly walked out to the warm sand, made our way to the water where we kicked around, looked at the coral and rocks, sneaked a peek at a few small fishes, and then we plopped ourselves back onto the shore and chilled. I love this beach because the water is calm. I saw a turtle there the other day which was cool. I came on a weekday afternoon and there was plenty of parking. There are open changing areas inside of the bathroom. The bathroom was moderately clean but there was no hand soap when I visited. read more

My kids really LOVE this beach. Not many tourist at this beach. Which is cool and it's not over packed. Love the vibe of the locals. You can jet ski which we did here. Some locals fishing or boating. They have a area where you can jump off a stick kinda dangerous but that's the risk. read more

May 2024, beach day with the family before heading back to Texas. Haleiwa beach is beautiful but rocky. Great for paddle boarding but bring a tent as there is no shade around here. We stayed till sunset and it was worth the wait. Watch out for flies when cooking, and bring trash bag for your trash. A peaceful beach park that is relatively clean with a couple of provided facilities. The park includes basketball and volleyball courts plus a playground. Bathrooms and a foot washing stations are available as well. The Haleiwa Beach Park War Memorial landmark is stationed here, and the concrete structures add a nice touch. There is a public parking lot with abundant spots. So empty that we saw the bizarre sight of a person absentmindedly driving their pickup truck in circles around the lot a good portion of the time during our visit. read more

Love this place! Recently came here to surf after someone's recommendation. Parking was very easy to find in the lot. The beach was not super crowded on a Saturday. There are 2 normal bathrooms in the park, not portapotties. There are also multiple outdoor showers to rinse off! The waves are absolutely awesome! Nice shapes and sometimes fast but definitely easy to surf. There were plenty of kids in the water too. Nice grassy area for kids to play and suntan. Well maintained, very pretty, clean park. Cliff Jumping? Not here. There's no cliff. A lot of the reviews posted for this place are actually for a different location entirely. This is Haleiwa Beach Park, not Waimea Bay Beach Park. Waimea Bay Beach, where the beautiful Waimea Valley spills into the sea, is about five miles further north of Haleiwa Beach. Waimea Bay Beach has a big black rock that people climb up and dive off of. There's no cliff diving here at Haleiwa Beach. Haleiwa Beach Park is adjacent to the Haleiwa Boat Harbor and blessed with a broad, golden sand beach and an expansive stretch of green field dotted with magical Monkeypod trees. There are plenty of picnic tables. But I didn't come here to picnic. I came here to snorkel. And although I thoroughly enjoyed all of the beaches I snorkeled on Oahu, if I was forced to pick my favorite, this would be it. Here's why: First of all, it's super easy to get in and out of the water here. As a beginner, I really appreciate ease of access. The sandy beach meets the water at such a shallow angle you can actually walk out to a spot like five feet out, sit your butt down in the water and easily put on your flippers. Getting out of the water is super easy too. In the summer the waves are relatively gentle on this part of the island. That's super important for rookies like me. It's not easy getting in and out of the ocean when you are struggling against incoming waves. Getting out, you can swim toward the beach until you run out of water. At that point you can just roll over, sit up and take off your flippers. The second, and main reason, this is my favorite snorkeling place is the turtles. I realize I might be uncommonly lucky, but I always see turtles when I snorkel. Every time! Swam with turtles on the Big Island. Swam with turtles on Maui. Swam with turtles here on Oahu. Turtles love Mikey! Turtles dig me because I always give them plenty of space. When I see a turtle underwater I always swim away from them. I never want to make a turtle feel crowded or stressed. I swim away, then when I'm a little further away, I can turn around and observe without bothering them. Before snorkeling here, I saw turtles at Shark's Cove, Three Tables and Hanauma Bay. So, I was fully expecting to see them again here. But what I wasn't expecting was to run into the biggest turtle I've ever seen. My god, it was gigantic! Like, four or five times larger than any turtle I had ever seen before. It was like the size of a damn Volkswagen Beetle. I kid you not! Prior to this, all the other turtles I've seen always seemed to be about the same size. The one I swam with at Haleiwa Beach was bigger than me! Scary big! That bugger scared me good, too! Right before he swam up on me I was watching all the colorful fishes swimming around and thinking about what they would taste like. I was really getting into it, imagining how I would cook them. I noticed that some of them would be better filleted, some would be better cooked whole. Oh look at those little silvery guys, I bet they'd be great deep fried! And then right when I'm feeling all Apex predator, this freakishly large turtle swims right up on me. He comes swimming up quickly from behind on my right side, and glides effortlessly out in front of me. I was so astonished by his size I totally freaked the hell out. I don't know exactly what happened next. I must've gasped or tried to scream or something, because the next thing I know, the snorkel is out of my mouth and I'm choking on sea water. I think, oh my god, I'm gonna drown! I gotta get that snorkel thing back in my mouth. But I can't think straight because I'm too excited. Instead of putting the snorkel in my mouth, for some reason I grabbed my mask and started to take it off. Water starts to seep in. Oh my freaking god I am definitely going to drown! But I'm not panicking. I actually start to laugh. Snorkeling scares the bejesus out of me because I don't know how to swim. Sticking my face into water, even with a mask on, causes me to have a massive panic attack. I have no business in the ocean whatsoever. So, I can't swim. But, I'm a fat tub of lard, so I can float like a champ. You don't really need to know how to swim to snorkel. Floating works. Because of the panic attacks, I always take anti-anxiety medication before I go in the water. On this particular day I had a whole lot of medicine. So this whole clumsy snorkeling thing was cracking me up. I manage to gather my wits and clear my mask, get the snorkel tube back in position and when I look back down the giant turtle is still just a dozen feet away. I spent the next ten or fifteen minutes following him from a distance while he grazed on the plants growing in the shallow water. This Use To Be My Playground This Use To Be The Place I Ran To Haleiwa Beach Park is a stark reminder that not all beaches in Hawaii are immaculately maintained. Here are some of its features! Swimming: Not very ideal but you can. The water is very choppy, murky, and waves can knock you down if you are not sturdy. There are also a lot of rocks and coral in the water as you wade in, so be prepared! I see lotsa tourists swim or attempt to swim here only to retreat to the beach quickly as if its an unpleasant experience! Snorkeling: Its okay, much better spots elsewhere though. Please do not touch the sea turtles! Kayaking, Boarding: Probably the more ideal things to do here! Picnics: Yes, the beach is adjacent to a fairly good sized park where theres a number of huge lushous trees for shade. (see pic) The park area comes equipped with volleyball and basketball courts, and a mini jungle gym for keikis. That restroom tho? Dingy. (Did not sample) Fishing/Crabbing: I honestly don't know but I saw some dude with a net and pole out there. Parking: Busy on weekends, clear and empty weekday sunset time. I don't get those bunch of dudes hanging out smokin herbs right in front of the no smoking sign, but whatever. Walking/Observing/Sniffing: This is ONLY what I come here for, more on that below. When we were kids, my Grandparents use to take us here. Grandma use to drag us to the water and "purify" me and my bro with the "essence" of the ocean. Grandpa, meanwhile, scooped a few buckets of sand for his garden. The area with the tables under the trees used to be super packed with people grilling, eating fried chicken from the "orange and white buckets" and "red and white buckets", story telling, drinking, and playing games. It was the perfect place for family gatherings and especially after a whole day of driving around the island with out of town relatives. I don't see that anymore. Sadly, whats changed? The park seems neglected, maintenance and security wise. Trash in some places, potent urine smell by the restroom, graffiti, suspicious activities in the parking lots. :( Its lost a step (or star) but I still come here to have a quick meal every now and then, in my car, or by the beachwalk. It isnt the same but I can still vaguely hear the laughter in the mountains, see the smiles in the water and sun, and smell the fragrance of the wind and ocean. As the "current" reality of this place thrash violently in my head like the tide water against the rocks, the sun begins to set, and so does the memories and echoes of happier days gone by. read more

The bathrooms are clean and lots of places to even picnic. It was 9am when I visited so many surfers and surf lessons were happening. I was eating my acai bowl while watching the surfers. Waimea Bay Beach Park is beautiful. The sand is fine and the water is crystal blue. The day that I was there, the water was calm and tranquil. However, that could all change in an instant. Be careful of the changing tides, especially if you're a tourist and don't know how to read the water. Off to the left is a huge rock that people jump off of. Jump at your own risk. The only thing that keeps me from coming here is the awful parking. It's horrendous. The parking is small. Four stalls are reserved for the handicapped and four stalls are reserved for the lifeguards. You have to come really early to get a parking space. On our way out, we saw a cop ticketing vehicles that were illegally parked. read more

The sand was rocky and uncomfortable to walk on, and the water was cloudy and kind of muddled looking. It was still fun to swim and visit, and on the plus side, it's much less crowded than Kailua, Lanikai or Waikiki Beach. But I think I'd rather suck it up and go to one of those other beaches. read more

One of my favorite beaches to hit up when in Hawaii! Although many years ago I remembered the water being higher in the sand and bluer... The cliffs still look the same. You can still jump off of it, just muster up the courage. Every time I come the waves are small and tiny, but I heard the waves are huge during surf season (I'm not a surfer so I don't know when that is). Parking is a headache, small lot, if you don't get a spot up there you'll have to park at the top on the side of the streets. Bathrooms are pretty clean. Definitely was our first place to visit when we arrived in Honolulu. North Shore is always a nice drive for me and I never complain about Hawaii traffic especially being a native Angeleno where 405/10/5 are not considered freeways anymore but a parking lot IMO... I digress- Oh yes. My long over due review of the many beautiful beaches I was blessed to have visited last year on my Oahu vacation. I look to my right with lush green trees and mountain views, then to my left exists this clear blue water with unending views of roaring waves that I can get use to seeing and hearing everyday. I love it! Small parking area but we found one, just a few steps to the sand, and there we were. Home to the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational during the winter season where only a few chosen big wave surfers are invited to compete, it is an awesome spectacle to see. Watching these men ride mountains(waves have to be at least 30 feet to put the contest on) on their "Rhino Chasers" is just totally jaw-dropping. If you ever listen to Bruddah IZ' "Men Who Ride Mountains", this is what he is referring to. On the other hand, if you arrive here when its not winter, it is still a beautiful beach to lay out a towel, take a dip in the clear blue water, and if you are somewhat of a daredevil, take a risk and jump off the rock(ummmm....no thanks!) and if you wait patiently enough, one of the best sunsets on Oahu can be found here. The husband and I decided to stop here to lay out and plan out our day. We pulled out our beach bags, threw on some sunblock and soon we were running down the hot sand toward the water. The walk down the beach on the hot sand seemed forever!! But in the end, it was well worth the burn. This beach was pretty cool. There's a spot where you can cliff dive which was super full of people (I was sad I wasn't able to do it), lots of room for you to lay out, and the water is clear and clean. There is a small area with grass and a few picnic tables which were crowded during my visit. The reason why I deducted a star was because out of all our trip to the island, this was by far the most tedious parking experience we had. It seemed like no one was leaving (and they all had a good reason not too) but gosh, it took forever and a day to find a parking spot. I'm still trying to figure out which beach is my favorite on the island. After today, Waimea is definitely high up on the list. I finally got to walk the entire beach and fully enjoyed it to my hearts content! The waves can be a little rough (okay, maybe A LOT rough), but it's nice to stand on the edge and soak your toes in. Make sure you have a battle buddy with you...for taking your photo and just watching your back! Ya know what I mean?! The lifeguards are definitely on high alert. Back and forth on their atv and on the lookout from their tower. I just don't know if the surfers could hear them on the megaphone after paddling 100+ yards out. But, these guys are amazing to watch. The lifeguards, surfers, bodyboarders, swimmers - all very talented and beasts out there! Especially when the waves are gnarly. Miss leg day at the gym lately? No worries. Waimea Beach has got you covered. Walking in the sand here is like a small child grabbing your shins from behind and dragging on the floor so you can't move any farther. On the plus side, it'll be nice and fluffy when you lay your beach towel down to get your tan on. The bathrooms are just off of the grassy area, closest to the parking lot. There was TP, running water, and no stench, so that was a plus for me. Open showers are available on either end of the building. There are picnic tables, too! An actual parking lot is available, free of charge, but may be a challenge since this beach is so popular. Not in luck today? Exit and drive up on either hill to park along the road or at the next beach park. The walk will only take a few minutes since there is an opening with stairs on the side. The last few times I've been here, it was overcast, windy, and raining! So, it was a nice change today. The sky was blue, the sun was on location, and a nice breeze was flowing. This is a very popular beach and possibly my favorite beach in Oahu. Waimea Bay Beach is a beautiful and clean beach with a huge rock for cliff jumping and plenty of areas to lay out, eat and rest. Lots of kids and adults jump off the rock which doesn't seem very big at first but once you are at the top your testicles just drop to the ground. Jump at least one to experience the thrill, but of course be safe! Limited parking at their lot - I've always lucked in and found someone leaving so not sure where else one could park. This is one of many beaches along the Kamehameha Hwy, which means it can get very crowded! The park offers a free car park, but plan with patience because of its popularity. What I noticed on one of my recent visits here is it is one of THE places for surfing. I noticed lots of surfers, people watching surfers, and lots of pictures being taken of surfers. I am assuming because of the surfing popularity, have multiple lifeguards on duty is a must! Lifeguards provide frequent feedback to the crowds depending on the weather. This particular November visit, the surfing was rough with large swells. Lifeguards were heard about every 8 minutes warning no surfing unless you were a expert surfer with a buddy. No swimming was allowed and vistors were required to stand clear with visable posts marking the cut off. I appreciate the lifeguards being here because while I was here unfortunately there was a save of a surfer. I also appreciated them because I would not have known given the beautiful sunshine that the waves would be so dangerous. Beautiful beach with lots to do. Haleiwa Beach Park - Big winter waves! - Parks Near Me - Haleiwa, Hawaii

Located on the North shore side of Honolulu, I came to visit this place once again. This time it's winter season in the mainland. This place still amazes me. Learning the legend of this place makes me more intrigued to know more about it. During winter, this bay is known to big waves. So a lot of adventurous surfers challenge the powerful winter waves of Waimea. There's a lot to know about this place. Big time, history making surfers emerged. Beyond surfing, this is a beautiful beach with wide stretches of sand to go sun bathing and picnic. Of course, winter time though, officials usually put a sign of Danger/No swimming due to undertow and high big waves. Summer time is the best time as the waves subsides. Good for first time surfers. There is also a rock in the bay that is very popular to local people. They climb this rock and jump off. This can be dangerous so why take a risk? But I remember very well, few years ago, my nephews went and did it. My, I can't look thinking they will end up hitting those rocks as they land in the water. But, they did it without a scratch. There are so many things you can do that this place offers besides being on the beach. Let me warn you though: if you plan to be in this place the whole day, you need to get here early. We didn't have enough time to check out all the North Shore beaches. But we did have enough time for one or two. Parking is also challenging for most of these North Shore beaches, with few spots in the lot and people parking on the side of the road/highway. We ended up choosing Waimea because there was a beach and a park. We first strolled into Waimea Valley (mostly to check out the parking situation - there are more spots here than in the Waimea Bay Beach Park lot.) It is a nice stroll. Unfortunately the park was closed by the time we got there, but the entrance was nice and picturesque. After parking at the park, you can walk across the road/highway (no crosswalk) to get to a bridge path that takes you to the beach. The beach does get crowded - probably because there's a 20 foot cliff that you can jump off of! We were not dressed for the occasion so opted out, but would definitely go back just to do that. This has to be one of the most beautiful beaches that I have been to. The water is so clear, almost looks like sea glass. Why only 4 stars? Well I was bothered a little by the cigarette butts, orange peels and other pieces of garbage. BUT it is still quite a gem! read more

Today was the greatest, day I ever know, can't live for tomorrow, tomorrow's not known....ok, I digress.... I woke up this morning at 445am thinking, WHAT in the WORLD am I doing up so so so early? REALLY, come on now. Well, I woke up to get a good parking at Waimea Bay Beach Park and to get there before the oama (fish) start waking up too. Well, 2 things happened. First, here were 3 oama in the bay today and my friend caught one. Second, I found out that this is a GREAT beach to swim, have a few musubis, and just enjoy a great view of a wonderful bay. I usually drive by this place and write it off as too crowded, too many tourist, no parking, and such. Well, today changed my mind. For sure. It made me even think about coming back! The water was crystal clear, the bathrooms were pretty clean, the showers were well drained, and the beach was pretty empty. The only thing that might have been a problem was finding parking...when we left there were 10 cars waiting for stalls in the parking lot inside and that was a moderate count. Next time, I will jump off the rock...we will see about that! The water and views were just beautiful on this very calm day in the bay. I am sure when the swells are up it is also a sight to behold but today, when the surf was down, it was beautiful.
