I became…read morea little concerned when they made a mistake on their engagement letter and decided to stick with them since I needed assistance and finding a lawyer who could assist in real estate law in New Hampshire has been challenging. I received a draft within approximately two weeks which matched the expectations set during the initial meeting. After week three and requesting a status update, the letter was sent to the neighbor, and my issue was quickly resolved by the neighbor. A new issue was identified with a different neighbor, however after reaching out to the attorney for assistance, this was missed without resolution. I then cancelled the request for assistance and closed my account. Around the time of the second issue, I was asking for assistance with a living trust and a different attorney was recommended. I made an appointment to meet the new attorney and hear what services he was able to provide. When I called the billing department about receiving the balance of my retainer, billing informed me that she wanted to hold on to the retainer for future possible business. I decided to cancel my appointment with the individual who might have been able to assist me with a living trust to receive the balance of my retainer and help their billing team understand that holding on to my retainer balance was not going to be an option for them. My perception is when options are limited quality can be sacrificed due to limitations of options.

Remember, don't get mad at them if they refuse to help you fill out forms. They can't do anything that could be construed as legal advice. Downside: Try not to go solo. Every one knows everyone in the legal community. The judges (esp Foley) "appears to" frown on pro se litigants except in small claims court. Suggestion: Stand when addressing court (required) and address the judge as "Your honor". If you don't understand something, say so before agreeing. If you lose a case and they impose a payment schedule and you can't pay them, tell them why then and there. It is usually based on your paperwork that you fill out to see what you can afford to pay. Criminal cases: If there is jail time involved, you will be given a court appointed lawyer if you cannot afford one. Otherwise, good luck. Check into your right to have small claims proceedings recorded if it involves substantial funds.
