I rated this place a 4.5 Service was friendly, coffee was good, the shop was clean and had several people sitting around enjoying themselves. The donuts: chocolate chocolate donut 7.5/10. Cream filled Long John 8.8/10, apple fritter a 8.5/10 (husband loved! A little greasy for me), sour cream 8/10. All were really yummy... I happen to be a donut snob and rarely give more than a 9. It's one of those hole in the wall places- I've actually driven passed it and thought "Nah, don't think I'll find myself there anytime soon..." The outside is outdated and frankly, just a little "dirty" looking. The same can be said for the inside. Not somewhere that you want to spend your time at longer than to grab & go. We came for the donuts and were pretty excited to see a decent amount of options. They were good, too! Not dry, good flavor. Worth the 25 minute drive. Heading down US12 to a distant Rite-Aid for a Covid shot (no appointments available in our more educated area full of people a lot more eager to get this over with), we stopped at a favorite out of town donut shop, Dutch Uncle. It is an old-fashioned, classic donut shop in the style of all the old big city donut shops. The owners are friendly and offer a nice variety of clean-tasting (not old oil) donuts and fritters. Can we talk about the fritters? I mean...I could not stop eating them out of the box on the way home and couldn't wait to have another one in the morning. It would be worth the weekend country drive just to get those! Inside was clean and tidy but some patrons did not wear masks during the pandamonium. That is bothersome but you get that in these rural train station towns. The owners do and that is what is important right now. Another Yelper begged the question as to why this donut shop would be open 24 hours. Perhaps they need to spend a long summer night into the wee hours, enjoying movies at the Capri Drive In, further down in Coldwater, to appreciate this more! We always stop here for some sugar boost for that long drive home to Ann Arbor in the middle of the night. US-12 is a famous trucking route, actually the uncelebrated extension of Route 66 in Chicago. You will see and hear trucks at any time of day or night, going to Detroit with loads of vegetables most likely. Back to the donuts! We also had some sour cream donuts, long twist yeast donuts and a variety of others that were filled, chocolate frosted, blueberry cake. Not a bad one. I agree, this is a place I'd normally drive by. And if I did stop and start to walk in, might have second thoughts. When the building appears so decrepit, I have to wonder how the kitchen is, why is there no pride of ownership, are you busy enough... or at least paint the damn thing and cover up the filth. No surprises inside either. Yet, there were trays upon trays of fresh donuts waiting for me. I'd probably have to try them again, but I'm currently undecided on these donuts. The cake donuts were soft, with a light crunch and flavor. Not too much, maybe too little. There seemed to be a different taste/texture on the back end though - almost as if there's some corn flour in there? After I noticed it, it overwhelmed the apple flavored donut. As of right now, this is one of the better donuts I've tried in the Coldwater area. Nothing special service wise. Just too soon to tell if it would be a regular stop. read more

When you grow up in rural southern Michigan like I did, eating donuts is a way of life and you grow up believing that they in and of themselves are one of the basic food groups. And you grow up eating GOOD donuts - sinfully fattening and fried, heavy & freshly made, plain or sugary or frosted or filled with cremes, or strawberry/lemon/blueberry/assorted red jellies. Or donuts made with sour cream or buttermilk, or rolled in peanuts and cinnamon and....and.....yeah, just call me Homer - I have a love affair with donuts. And all these delicious donuts can be found at Dutch Uncle Donuts. Driving back to Chicago recently, my beloved and I hit Coldwater, MI at around 7 a.m. and decided to give Dutch Uncle Donuts a try. I am embarrassed to admit I have driven by this place 1,000 times over the years on my way to my parents' farm from Chicago and had never stopped. What was wrong with me? On my way to the door, I hoped against hope that they would have my favorite donut of all - the rare and elusive chocolate frosted long john with white cream filling - which I, for some bizarre reason, have only ever spotted in this Indiana/Ohio bordering region of southern MI. The place is right out of a William S. Burroughs story - close your eyes, reopen and you are transported to a real live 24 hr sit-down donut shop, circa 1948. Susan who waited on us was pleasant and patient and chatted with us as she presciently handed out coffee and donuts to her incoming regulars while we stood there overwhelmed with what to order. My eyes scoured the trays of deliciousness. And there it was! The donut of my childhood! I could hardly wait to get back in the car to try it and....omg...it was perfection. Good thing we had 12 assorted donuts - to choose from - for the two of us - for a 4 hour car ride - because we're so skinny. HA. Yep, the country girl left this area many, many years ago but, to paraphrase Dorothy Gale, "...if I ever go looking for my heart's (donut) desire again, I won't look any further than my own back yard. Dutch Uncle Donuts is one of my all time favorite establishments. Aside from friends it is, perhaps, what I miss most about my hometown. Eh, the place is dingy at times and the bathrooms were always a disaster but the folks than ran the place are always nice and the donuts are fantastic and cheap. The cream and custard filled Long John's cannot be beat. Dutch Uncle also serves up good chili and makes great sandwiches. I always loved their bread. Given that it's open 24 hours it can be fun just sitting in there chowing down on donuts given the odd assortment of characters that are bound to be there. I visited Dutch Uncle Donuts for the first time ever a month ago. I tried a sugar-coated donut and a chocolate glazed donut. Let me tell you... they were the ABSOLUTE WORST donuts I've ever tasted. The overall selection was bleak to begin with. The donuts tasted like they'd been sitting there at least a day or two (I got there at 7:30 a.m. on a Monday morning... those should have been FRESH!). And the outside "crunch" made them taste like an old shoe,and even if you decide to have a E.coli chicken salad sandwich you have to wait for them to finish mopping to come assemble you mop handle special! I understand this place has changed ownership some years ago, so I can't comment on the donuts under the prior owner. But it'll be a miracle if this place stays in business on these poor excuses for donuts. Great location and they're blowing it because they have no clue how to make decent donuts.Not to mention the Interior looks like an 80's horror Movie These guys apparently bought the donut shop from the original owners and don't know a thing about making donuts.or they are to cheap to keep up the standard read more
