Unlike Google, where Christine also posted her malicious review, Yelp did not print the response from the shelter's owner, right after the review. We decided to copy and post it below (as it appears on Google, anyone in doubt look it up}: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Response from the owner (of Sullivan County SPCA} a month ago: "There is definitely a miscommunication here as our kittens come completely vetted spayed, or neutered, vaccinated, tested for fiv/leuk and dewormed and they are $150. NEVER more than that. It is the pups that are $475. Please call me as there is something wrong with this 845-796-3120." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Christine O,,you are definitely completely inaccurate in your accusations of Sullivan County SPCA charging $500 as adoption fees for a kitten. The shame of it is that some people may have read your review and didn't check out the truth of it. Just use your head...if every other shelter in New York State is charging approximately $150. for adopting out kittens...WHY would Sullivan County charge four times as much? Next time you write a review please take some time to confirm what you are saying rather than damage the reputation of a fine organization

Since January 20 23, they've taken in close to 400 local dogs that were either lost or needed placement into new homes due to circumstances beyond their control. The local SPCA is not associated with the ASPCA, but they are a small nonprofit that depends on funding from communities to keep the doors open and keep the employees paid to continue rescuing and saving and placing puppies and dogs into their forever homes.. the new board and all of the employees give a warm welcome to people coming in and take care of all the animals that are in the shelter as if they were their own. It's a beautiful facility and they do different charity events to help. Keep those doors open. The dogs that I adopted are the most perfect pups in the whole wide world and I may be a little bit biased because I love them so much. When my cat died, the Spca helped me with getting him cremated and we're so caring which really warmed my heart.

These folks take their jobs very seriously as was shown through our adoption process. The facility is clean and friendly with staff who obviously care and love animals. We picked out a dog on our first visit and began the adoption process. Our puppy was too young to adopt (they wouldn't let us take her until she was old enough and was fixed) so we agreed to board her as fosters for a couple of weeks until she was old enough for the surgery. Before we could take her home, an officer came to our house and inspected the premises and asked many questions (this is after filling out a full application). I was impressed by his professionalism. After we were approved we were able to take our puppy home. The fees were nominal, especially considering the costs of the surgery and medical tests that had to be performed before they would release the dog. Once they did, we had a wonderful life companion. If any of the above sounds like a hassle, then think about why you are adopting. As someone who volunteered at a shelter I know how important it is to have potential adopters vetted. I felt confident after going through the process that this shelter is excellent.

Sadly, these folks don't seem to get animals. I am truly worried that these people are not qualified to assess individual animals' needs and will fail to place their animals in appropriate homes. They have general (and, frankly, arbitrary) guidelines for adopting out pets and the people I spoke to couldn't speak to any individual pet's traits or needs. It was a onerous, depressing and frustrating process just to locate pets on their site and after you spend a long, long time filling out repetitive forms, you have to go over and confirm all the answers on the phone with someone who doesn't have specific knowledge of the animal involved. Truly head spinning. Also, the service there is terrible, they will NOT return calls, you always have to call back and hope to get someone. I truly worry about where the animals in their care end up.

This is one of the most abysmally run organizations I've ever encountered. Strap in for the ride,…read morebecause this is a long story. So, checking out local shelters, I find ARF not too far down the road from my new apartment (I'm from Central New York). I go and check it out, find a few puppies I'm super interested in, and ask about the application process. A few things about the woman in question's demeanor: she was curt, looked at me as if I was "unqualified to adopt" any sort of dog, and attempted numerous times to brush off my inquiries. I will not mention names, but I assure you you'll know who I'm talking about if or when you meet her. Now, after speaking with this woman and feeling like I had been belittled and berated for trying to help a puppy in need, I put in an application. I waited a few weeks before I decided to come in, as I'd not heard anything. Upon returning, I'd inquired about one dog, and I quote, she said: "I'm going to have to say no to that puppy, because he runs a lot, and you live in an apartment." Fair enough, I thought. She must know more than myself, because she said herself: "I've become really attached to the dogs, after being here for thirty-ish years." It was only until I inquired about the next type of dog that I understood how "attached" she was. I expressed interest in a litter of 3 Border Collie puppies, and asked what the next step in the process might be. She gave me the standard rate, told me a little about the puppies and I said: "great! I know you close soon, so I won't keep you. I'll swing by tomorrow to continue the process." Her reply was: "see you then!" This is where it gets so massively obtuse that I can feel the anger all over again. The next morning, I go out and buy a kennel, food, etc.- the regular supplies for a new puppy. I wanted to be prepared. I get there right as they open their doors - another woman greeted me with a smile and said: "hello! You here to get a dog today? To bring one home?" And I reply: "yes, or rather, I hope so!" We both smile for a bit, make small talk about the puppies and I point out which one in the littler I'm interested in. The owner then comes out of the back and says good morning to me. My throat closes in anticipation - I greet her and she goes to review my application. Almost instantly I can tell, as she takes it off the bottom of the pile, nestled between dust and what appears to be hoarded garbage, that she hasn't touched this since I applied three weeks prior. This certainly didn't bode well for my stomach; it was in knots. She looks a little more at the application, says she wasn't able to get in touch with my landlord (which is a lie, because he said he hadn't received any calls or voicemails regarding pets of any nature), and so I said I called him last night and asked him to be available around this time. I also had a few references she could check, and I gave her those numbers as well. She wanted to be sure that once I get a dog, my landlord wouldn't kick him/her out, all that noise and garble. Completely understandable. Up until that point, I was fine. She went in the back to call him, and these next few instances are what makes me want to take away the one star I gave to this institution. She came out and said: "well, I talked to him, and tried to tell him that puppies would chew up the apartment, but he said you would have a security deposit, so he was okay with that." I nodded and smiled, sort of in temper about the audacity it took for her to try to dissuade my landlord. Chuckling, I thought she was joking... And THEN she said: "I mean- how do I even know this is your landlord?" My smile dropped. "I'm sorry?" I replied, confused. She was accusing me of giving a phone number of someone I knew that wasn't my landlord. Hmm. "Okay," I thought. "She's just super protective and wants to make sure these pets go to good homes," I convinced myself. "There's just something I'm not comfortable with," she said. She asked me to give her two hours to make a final decision. At this point, I'm a little unnerved. I had bought everything, was prepared, and told to wait a little more. At this point, I'm patient enough. I go home and call back two hours later. "Have you made your decision yet?" I ask sheepishly. "Well," she starts, "the other two pups are going home with someone right now as we speak!" I think: oh, okay, great! Those two have homes! And I ask: "alright, so I can come by and pick up the last one (her name was Jada)? She then, stumblingly, says: "oh, no, we gave her away right after you left, but we're getting puppies on the 13th!" I will never recommend this place. I will, in fact, dissuade people from ever going here. She was completely unprofessional, profiled me as a 25 year old that didn't know how to raise a dog (I've had four in the past), and ultimately played an irrational game of cat and mouse. Abysmal. I hear the other part of ARF with the cats is a great place. This review is for "Her" alone.

Breathtaking and moving! A MUST for true animal lovers!…read more We truly enjoyed our day here. From the animals to the volunteers I cannot say enough good things. We have not eaten meat in years and visiting here truly reinforces our values. You come face to face with the survivors of factory farming, cock fighting and abuse cases in general. Most people would think "oh it's sad" but to me it was a positive to see that many people feel how I do and want to help the animals! It was very clean and they have a great little store with reasonable prices and all the money goes to running the sanctuary !

Arrogant and lacks transparency, not aligned to veganism…read more Lesson learned: Before donating to a cause, I suggest real vegans to first verify whether they are really doing their work as they claim. This is important if you care about their spending details (whether 90% of donations are used for staff salary and political events etc.), or if you need a verification from them about donation etc. There are many other good and real vegan causes, not hard to find. All you need for better funding efficiency and more transparency is to contact and verify in advance. Previously I made a mistake -- I only checked via charity rating websites but didn't contact first. Among 5+ animal rights related causes among different countries, Woodstock is the only one that never reply email/phone call, after months. Others that I donated to in the last few years either have spending details on their website in public, or replied within hours or days. It can happen if a cause do not want to provide such information, but at least there should be a clear reply. I tried to call the number they left on this page -- always only voice mail. sent info@woodstocksanctuary.org, then donations@woodstocksanctuary.org, but never got any reply. later on social media, they told me that they need my name and email, despite that I told them the title of my email. This indicates they never check their email, unless you let them link all your contact method -- name, phone and social media accounts. Why do they need these info? for retaliation on asking them to provide those info? I have no idea. But still I decided to trust them once again, and provided the info, and never heard back. This comment is not against animal rights or veganism, but an alert toward arrogance and lack of transparency. I suggest donators verify first. and if you cannot persuade yourself that they are doing what they claim, try to turn to other more sincere, transparent and less arrogant charities, after contacting them or visiting their place on your own.
