Neat place, was able to shop, grab a bite to eat and enjoy the hill country. They have a place you can walk your pups and you can dine on the back porch or inside. I would have given it a five star but it took a while to get my sandwich plus the soda machine was down that day. We stopped in for a bit on our way home from Christmas. We were hungry but also wanted a chance to stretch our legs and let our toddler move. This was the perfect place!! It has a super fun shop up front and a cute deli in the back. All the bread is cooked in house and it was delicious!! Their back patio was absolutely perfect for a lunch break! They even had a bucket of balls that you can play with. There was a cute little creek running through the back area my boys loved exploring. We stopped in; the place was full of lots of choices - we purchased the dark chocolate almond cluster among other things. I would recommend tasting it before you leave. We got in the car and starting in trying what we bought. The almonds in this very expensive delight were stale and a bit mushy. So try your bite before you leave. I was really excited to stop in here. Huge fan of sauerkraut & obviously chocolate but was so disappointed. They have a ton of jarred goods with salsa, jams, sauerkraut, barbecue sauces, jerky and so much more plus they had , a chocolates/candy selection in a glass case if you will, a restaurant, tshirts & souvenirs etc... it's a very large store. I was especially excited about the sauerkraut. So we are looking and wondering about the sauerkraut and decided to go talk to the people in the restaurant because they make Reuben sandwiches & the lady tells us the kraut they use in the restaurant is not even the kraut they sell in the store. I've never heard of this so was baffled. The lady told us they source a company to make & jar it for them. She did let us try some that they use on the sandwiches. It was warm from the stove and it was basic & plain. I thought well this in the jar has to be better but it was just ok. It had more to it than the restaurant's but I've had better. I was then excited to see they had some of my favorite candy which is chocolate covered gummy bears. They aren't really readily available that I've found so I told her to just give me the rest of what she had in the case. I wasn't told how much (the weight) it was & I didn't care I wanted them! Bad idea. They tasted as tho they had been there for some time meaning they were tough and inedible. I'd say 92% of what I bought was that way. I was pretty upset about this because they aren't cheap & neither is the kraut. I bought one of those pecan praline rounds as well and it was really crumbly like maybe it was expired too? Never had one crumble like that so idk it was weird. I spent 40$ for the praline, one of the smaller size mason jars of kraut that was just ok (not a repurchase) & id say probably a pound of the gummy bears that were not good at all. Driving in from Fort Worth, Dutchman's on the outskirts of Hamilton is the perfect place to stop and eat lunch for any Hill Country excursion. 1 part bakery, 1 part deli, and 1 part souvenir stop, it really does have something for everyone. For us, the sandwiches from the deli hit the spot as I thoroughly enjoyed my Spicy Dutchman and The Wife loved her Reuben. Nothing crazy, but just some delicious, warm sandwiches for the weary traveler. Also do make sure and grab some of their meat products, with some featuring cuts from the owner's own bison herd. I was quickly reminded as to why I'm not allowed to buy summer sausage regularly as I quickly devoured the entire delicious jalapeño cheese bison summer sausage package once we returned home. After a few trips to the Hill Country down HWY 281, we've eventually made Dutchman's into one of our mandatory stops, each way. We had an odd experience. You see, we were on a road trip and thought we would use the stop as an opportunity to throw away some cups we had in the car. There was no trash can outside, so we entered to look for one in the store. This is where things go awry. My husband goes to the deli in the back to check out the menu, throwing his cup away in the process. In the meantime, my son and I, still holding our cups, are cornered by a woman who blocks our way yelling, "No trash inside!" The confrontation leaves me feeling as if we are unruly children wanting to spray paint the place with graffiti rather than throw away a couple of empty Starbucks cups. The woman tells us to take our trash back to our car then, considering the matter closed, returns to her post at the fudge counter. We are now fully motivated to return our trash to the car except for the inconvenient fact that my husband has the car keys. My husband, completely unaware of our encounter with the angry woman, comes walking cheerfully, sans trash, around the corner. When we ask him for the keys, saying that we want to take the trash to the car, he motions back in the direction he came, stating, "But there is a trash can right over here!" When we insist on getting the keys, he looks at us like we are insane, motions again with a bit more agitation, and says, "What is the problem? Why would you want to take trash back to the car?" We are now caught between illegal trash disposal or somehow explaining our bizarre encounter with the angry woman. As I'm standing there stunned, two of the other employees come to our rescue by discreetly offering a trash receptacle behind a nearby counter. When we left, the angry woman was writing out a chalkboard sign to notify future visitors not to bring in their trash. Everyone else in the store was gracious and kind. Summary The sandwiches are AMAZING! Just leave your trash in the car. read more

This was a wonderful restaurant and store. It reminded my family and I of markets up in Pennsylvania. The service was good, the food was good, and the store was cute with all kinds of Knick-knacks and taffy. As for the food, we ordered: the Reuben and the Wurst plate. Sauerkraut was on the dry side which we enjoyed, the sausage was the perfect grind and the pickles were crunchy. My parents enjoyed their Reubens as there were no crumbs to be found. The restaurant even gives you taffy as your after meal "mint". What a charming find. Was looking for a halfway point pit stop between DFW and Fredericksburg, and Dutchman's was called out as a place to try by an article I found online. A couple miles outside of Hamilton, TX lies this little gift shop off the highway that makes it own candies, fudges, and other sweets. There is also a sandwich shop tucked into the back of the store. Great place to stop for unusual road snacks when you're tired of chips, beef jerky and candy bars. There's a reason why this is a Texas Thang, and the parking lot is always busy. What a great place to eat and shop. We had the fried bologna sandwich it was really good. The little gift sections around the store are adorable and we bought a bunch of little items. The taffy is handmade there and so good!! We bought a bag of it. Also they freshly make bread and fruitcake not like the fruitcake you get from recycled gifts like the real deal and tastes so good. I needed to get my wife out of the house for a change of scenery, and we will found ourselves wandering up US-281 north of Hamilton to the Dutchman's Hidden Valley. It resists easy classification, being a Texas oriented gift shop, meat market, deer processor, bakery, and small restaurant. Lunch was first on our agenda, so a couple of sandwiches on their homemade bread quickly appeared. My Reuben certainly met my expectations, but my wife took the prize with her "Old Fashioned American", which was essentially a grilled cheese with a couple of fried slabs of their house made bologna. Wow, I feel like I stumbled onto something really under the radar, way out in the field country on my way between Austin and the Dallas metroplex. This is one of those stores that time forgot -- which are great places to go to when you have had a bit too much of the "hip and trendy" establishments we can't seem to get enough of in the big cities. I love the authenticity of a store that stocks house-made dime store candy and Americana up the wazoo. But let's talk about the food. You go to a little counter and select from a menu board with a small selection of food (each priced with amounts that time seems to have forgotten, too -- less than $5 for a sandwich on house-made bread??) I ordered the ham sandwich, which is shaved ham with sauerkraut and a fantastic dill mayo, melted provolone cheese on two toasted slices of homemade rye bread. The result is like the Platonic form of sandwichness. Must be tried to be believed, so make a trip! read more

I get turkey and cheddar on sourdough and my husband likes the spicy Dutchman sandwich. The staff is so friendly too! We were given free candy samples that they had just made fresh! And the guys at the Deli were super helpful, patient, and nice to talk to. This is definitely a place to check out if you haven't yet! Very cute and very large country store. This is a type of store I would love to shop in. They make homemade fudge, and little knick-naps. Homemade taffy. Exotic meats like bison, and Elk. Very clean restroom. The place doesn't smell old, but it does look old. I didn't buy anything because I just wasn't feeling good. Though, they did have huge giant jawbreakers bout the size of your head. I wanted one, but I didn't get any. The staff is very sweet, and kind. I was a little skeptical, about stopping here for the restroom because I'm black and were in the country area. But sure was I super wrong, they were very nice and treated me equally. I guess Covid 19, supply chain and staffing issues took its toll.. Since my last visit in 2018-2020 Prices went up, hard to be respected and they are closed on Wednesday.. My brother still loves their beef summer sausage yet $30.00+ a 2 foot stick killed my fuel budget. I hadn't been back since 2021.. I had a (hematoma-chronic-condition) work injury on July 30, 2021.. I couldn't wait go back to Hidden Valley and try again.. But if you like Christian music they play it well! Some staff need paid time off.. Would be nice if they served German Dark Roast coffee..
