How can I live in Tucson and not have known about this unique stop on the way to New Mexico? It's about 1 mile off the freeway and after passing many billboards shouting out that they sell fresh beef jerky, we just had to check it out. It's a wooden building with their own food truck out back. Much of their jerk Is made in their truck. We bought a couple of fresh brisket jerkies and a buffalo chicken jerky. The brisket jerky was excellent... Soft and chewable. Not hard like the traditional. They also sell olives of all flavors, jellies, salsas and other snacks. You can sample everything before you buy. We're still traveling and have not yet eaten the chicken jerky. This place is definitely worth a few minutes out of your way no matter which direction you're going. read more

I stumbled on this place a few years ago on a trip from cali to Texas with my family. Kept seeing signs for Dwaynes Fresh Jerky and we decided to check it out. The moment I saw the building I knew it was a REAL business.. not a corporate or franchised thing that focused on how much money they're making. We were greeted by a young and very friendly lady.. we tried some samples and we were hooked.. left with a hundred bucks of jerky, peanuts, so much stuff lol.. now I try to make it a yearly thing to drive from socal... just to go get jerky.. I must have passed this place a hundred time in my travels but now that I am retired, I actually have time to stop at interesting places along the way. Cassidy, who was working that day was super nice and helpful. She made sure we tried all the samples of jerky, nuts, pistachios and olives that we could handle, never making us feel like we were trying too many things. She gave us her opinions on what she liked and what is popular so we could make a good choice though I think anything they offer there would be a great find. Dwayne's has so many jerky options, it's overwhelming (in a good way)! They also offer fudge, different nuts, honey, candy, and southwestern "souvenir" items. There are free samples for everything! Any jerky you want to try if available for tasting before committing to a whole bag. The prices are more than what you see at a grocery store, but the quality and taste is so much greater that it's worth it. They also usually have exotic jerky available, but their "exotic guy" is out for family reasons right now. It's the perfect stop on a road trip; they offer gas and clean bathrooms as well! read more

Hands down THE best jerky I've ever had!!!! My family and I found this place a few years ago while traveling cross country. Back then, they were in the back corner of a Shell gas station. They had jerky, brittle, different types of tree nuts and some other things I can't remember. We left with about 4 bags of jerky and 3 bags of brittle. The coconut cashew brittle is dangerously good. The staff(I believe it may have been Dwayne himself) was super friendly. He let us try a few things (which is why we left with so much) and made us feel very welcomed. A few months ago, I ordered some jerky from their website. The only reason they get 4 stars instead of 5 is because they didn't respond to my multiple email inquiries. I also ordered online and didn't receive my order until I called to check on it. That won't stop me from ordering though. I'll just place the order and call right after LOL! First of all, the folks that work here appear to have reached nirvana. They are proud (rightfully) of their products and happy to give you samples of anything in the store. It seems really strange for there to be a homemade jerky/nuts/olives/candy store in the middle of the desert, but when you try everything you realize that this is one of those tests that reward people who can see that Vonnegut was right when he said "Bizarre travel plans are dancing lessons from God." The various delicacies will make your taste buds dance and you will definitely experience a few products you never have before even if you are a jerky/olive/nut/candy enthusiast. Just the interactions alone are worth the stop, but the goodies you take home are reminders that this place is indeed real. This little slice of the world starting with Texas Canyon is a special place and it just makes sense that so much goodness would emanate from a humble little store just off of the freeway in the middle of a nowhere that is one of my favorite somewheres. read more
