I have been going to Douglas J for months almost a year. Every two weeks, I have had several…read moredifferent stylists as one graduates they are kind enough to make sure I am placed with another one that is able to style my hair. So that I do not skip an appointment. Today as I am getting ready to go to my appointment, I receive a phone call saying that they have to "cancel/reschedule" my appointment due to my stylist would be a hour late and that would put her behind on all her other appointments. So this means I am unable to have my appointment but everyone else had theirs. So they tell me, I have to reschedule for another day which who knows when ( they did try to say they could squeeze me in tomorrow (Saturday), I already have plans during the time they stated. And all I got after that was a sorry that's all we can do. It's MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND!!! And it seems like they really had no concern about messing up my weekend plans. Oh, then I get a email stating that I canceled the appointment and I can reschedule. Which I did not they did.

After that, when I called to try and book another apt, NO ONE ever answered the phone. Not a good way to run a biz. Finally got the facial. The student was v. nice and pretty good. But the hour facial ended up being only about 50 min. I had an apt, but when I got there, was told the student was on break. What the heck?? then took another 15 min or more to get it all set up. If this is how they are teaching their students to work in the real world, they are not going to make it. The place was v. clean and had a friendly atmosphere. But they seem to be dropping the ball on customer service. If no customers, how are the students going to practice, and learn, and be able to work in the real world?

The staff is very talented as they work to grow the dancers abilities, technique, and confidence. They find a balance of fostering a love of dance, instilling structure, and rigor. There has been little to no turnover in staff since we have been there. I think that says a lot. The studio does two full-length ballets every year -- Nutcracker and a spring rotating ballet. These are exceptional productions -- the costuming, sets, choreography, etc -- and it's so wonderful to see kids grow through different levels and parts year after year. It's also amazing that the students get these types of performance opportunities. For the more serious students, VSB has strong company and actual pre-professional programs (many studios just use that as a marketing term, so pay attention to what that means) setting students up to continue dancing either in college or professionally in top ballet companies and programs. VSB brings students to local, regional and national ballet competitions for soloists and group performances. Many students earn scholarships for summer intensives and more intense full-time ballet schools. My child has many dance friends at the studio, and it is a positive experience for her connecting with other dancers across different ages, too. She absolutely loves it. Lastly, the studio space is impressive and well kept. This is incredibly important for safety and the longevity of dancers bodies and feet!

Out of five scheduled meetings, she missed four. The only meeting I rescheduled was for my birthday, which she knew about and agreed to. She had multiple ways to contact me (phone, email, Facebook, and a shared Google folder) but never provided updates or drafts. After 30 days of silence and excuses, she attempted to push through something at 10 p.m. the night before the deadline, without any prior review or approval. I asked for a refund when she had not refused to do any work. She admitted in writing that she was overbooked, did not prioritize my project, and did not start until the day before. Despite this, she tried to claim otherwise and even threatened me legally when I complained. Bottom line: she claimed she did "websites and consulting," but she never provided one for me. I paid in full, on time, and received nothing. Proceed with extreme caution before doing business here. She will also lie make you feel like you crazy even though she knows she is lying through her teeth. Below her is admitting she got overbooked and that it didnt impact my project but I would say getting nothing would definitely be IMPACT.

Instead, look for two front windows filled by more vinyl letters than 14-year-old's Twitter feed. Astute Artistry advertises its various services from waxing to nails and makeup in stickers dense enough I'm surprised they get any natural light. I wasn't sure what to expect walking in the first time but recent renovations work in its favour. The floorplan is divided between a makeup studio in the front, a curtained-off section for waxing services, and the school in the back half. Several offices presumably cater to classroom time for students. I came as a prospective client rather than a would-be cosmetologist, so my experience reflects this. The chalk menuboard above the entrance clearly displays all prices for services available. Makeup touch-up and makeovers are a key component of their offerings. Skin care, like facials and peels, fill another column and I was quite pleased to see a variety from glycolic peels to a lengthy lymphatic facial lasting 90 minutes. The waxing services are extensive from humble eyebrow grooming and lip waxing to full Brazilians. I came in for an eyebrow wax. Waxing is performed on full beds separated by curtains from one another. If you value your privacy and want a door and walls between you and other clients, or prefer never to hear of their existence at all, Astute Artistry is not for you. I recommend checking out a bonafide waxing studio such as Georgi's in Birmingham. I never had the opportunity to confirm whether they use standard wax pots, warm or cold wax, or the variation thereof. On a Saturday afternoon, three clients sat in the small waiting area. Friendly staff offered us refreshments on several occasions, including coffee and water. Reading material is sparse on the ground, fair warning. I expected a modest wait because the waxing student was with another client. Brow waxing generally takes 10 minutes, 15 to 20 for very finicky or thorough shops. Waiting was hardly a pleasant as the environment is clean and bright, especially on a sunny winter afternoon. Cue thirty minutes of sitting about before the next guest ahead of me disappeared behind the curtains. Down to two. I managed to complete four chapters in my book before someone emerged to tell me I was next up, though my 30 minutes was swiftly becoming a 45 minute wait. Granted, this is a beauty school and I make allowances for different services and paces, but that's far too long a wait. I ended up leaving upon seeing no signs I was going to get my grooming needs performed any time soon. Another discomfort for me: Astute Artistry's prices are on par with full-service salons, but I'm not 100% sure whether the student or a fully licensed esthetician or cosmetologist is the one working on me. $20 for a brow waxing is on par with Georgi's, my gold standard in Michigan. Literally next door and across the street, two competitors charge $10-12. The bikini wax and Brazilian waxes are similarly spendy. $70 for a Brazilian is fair considering the intimate and precise nature required -- this is where you darn well better get what you pay for. However, if this is a beauty school, $70 is what the experts up Woodward charge and I feel it's much too high. Bear this in mind.
