I came to the Flyhouse before Covid with a group. It was my first aerial experience and a ton of fun! I had a chance to work with the silks and a hoop, both were great! I've never considered myself an acrobat on any level, but we were encouraged to try it all. The staff is super supportive & encouraging. Yes, there were challenges and we worked through them. My 9 year old daughter and I signed up for a basic introductory and safety class with Detroit Flyhouse. Nicole was our teacher and she was great. We began with a warm up and she showed us how to get into the hammock. She taught us some basic poses, stretches and even a drop/fall. We had a blast. There aren't enough words to describe how much I love the Detroit Flyhouse, nor is there any other place like it! I moved from LA about a year ago, and at the urging of a friend, signed up for Flyhouse's Conditioning Series. Having come from a city chock-full of every new workout/activity trend imaginable, I thought this might be like aerial yoga or a barre class -- that is to say "circus-inspired" but more to just get a workout in. But no. I could not have been more wrong. This is the REAL DEAL. I was hooked after the first class. The conditioning course was exactly that, a circuit of strength-building exercises utilizing various circus apparatuses (and, can I say, such a great balance if you're a runner looking for cross-training. I'm 99% sure Flyhouse enabled me to finish my first half marathon). But we also dipped a toe into circus moves...mounting the lyra or silk hammocks, or inverting under the trapeze. Holy hell, my upper body was so sore after the first class. In the best. way. possible. From there I signed up for a few Aerial series. And since then, the Flyhouse has become my happy place. I will be the first to say that it's challenging...but if you've got the right attitude and are willing to give it a try, the instructors are incredible at breaking the moves down and making it accessible to everyone. I've seen men and women from their 20s to their 60s and kids of all ages able to hop up and do the moves. I promise you'll surprise yourself with what you can do. And everyone in the classes is encouraging and will cheer you on. Can't say that about a barre class. It's also become my go-to activity for friends visiting from out-of-town! I've taken girlfriends from both NY and LA to drop in on classes with me, and it's been a huge hit. Despite having never done "circus" before, both were able to hop up and have a blast. TIPS: The Flyhouse classes are structured in 8-week series (same time/day each week), and there are no refunds available once you purchase. BUT there are often spots open in classes for drop-ins, so if you're unsure if it's for you...call and check out a class first! It's best for someone who's got a relatively stable schedule who knows they can meet up at the same time each week. My first series, I missed out on a few classes due to unforseen travel. But even then, it's completely worth it and I plan to keep coming back for a long, long time. One of these days I'll even get comfortable enough to perform in one of their showcases (practice, practice!). Summary: Flyhouse = all the stars. 10 stars if I could. If you're looking to do something like this look no further. Out of all the aerial places you could possibly go to this is the place to be. The instructors are knowledgeable make you feel comfortable explain each technique to a T. They even warm you up prior to doing aerial moves which by the way helped to the point to where I am not sore at all the following day. I want to tell this place to anybody I cross paths with. I've been wanting to do this for years and after doing it I have no idea why I waited so long. There is people of all different ages and sizes who are fully capable of doing the same thing everybody else is able to do. Practice makes perfect and I can guarantee you I will be at every class I am able to attend to further my learning to the point to where I am good enough. I truly did find my calling and my happy place and my home away from home. Everybody was so sweet and welcoming when I arrived I thought I'd be nervous but I was not nervous in the slightest. I aspire to be good enough to learn the choreography and reach my next goal here. Please don't wait as long as I did once you go here you will wonder why you haven't went sooner. Now into my 3rd series update on yin: no more yin yoga update on classses: they sell out FAST, so sign up quickly, there are all kinds of classes now!!! update on acro: this is for everyone. you don't have to be limber like a pretzel or any such thing. Clothing wise you do not have to wear anything with sleeves, no chaffing. Update on clothes: don't wear anything with sequins, zippers, velcro, and any "rough stuff" simply because this snags on the apparatus... and other people. PS. Still some of the most amazing, fun, encouraging people you will ever have the privilege to meet. read more

I couldn't be more obsessed with aerial yoga. Micha, who owns the Flyhouse, and her staff, are extremely welcoming to newcomers, and they're very proficient teachers. Micha, especially, knows exactly what to say to help you do things upside-down with the greatest of ease. It's a serious workout--mega strengthening for your body and self-esteem (and the knots in your back)--and the whole experience is insanely gratifying. Where else can adults do flips on trapezes like they did on the jungle gym as kids, and gracefully climb upside-down on giant fabric ropes that hang from the ceiling? So very highly recommended. When a friend suggested an aerial yoga class, I signed up immediately. Learning to flip around on a trapeze and hanging upside-down 15 feet in the air seemed a little crazy and a lot of fun. On the first day of class we split into groups and the instructors demonstrated how to climb the fabric and swing onto the trapeze. I scaled the fabric with little trouble, but could not for the life of me get on that trapeze. I left that first class with bruised legs, and arms so sore they barely worked for the rest of the day, but I couldn't wait for more. Each week, as the instructors demonstrated the tricks, I let out a little laugh thinking "I'm gonna do that??" Ten minutes later, I would be hanging upside down, the fabric wrapped around my waist and legs, arms spread wide. I may have even yelled "TA DA!" a few times. Even though I was only a few feet off the ground, I felt a great sense of accomplishment. Each class from then on I was able to climb a little higher, stretch a little further and do more difficult tricks. During the seventh week I had a major breakthrough and did a pull-up for the first time ever! This class turned out to be more of a challenge than I anticipated. It's not just going through the motions, lifting weights or doing crunches, each week is a new physical and mental challenge. I know my arms will hold me up, but do I have the proverbial balls to take my feet off the trapeze and hang there, ten feet in the air? Aerial yoga has not only made my ass look great, it has completely boosted my confidence. After class I'm beaming at what I've accomplished and can't wait for next week so I can attempt more mind-blowing feats of strength and flexibility. In addition to high-flying circus classes they also off fire class, which I just don't have the balls to attempt, and candlelit yin yoga which is challenging and super relaxing at the same time. If I could I'd give the Fly House way more than five stars for being such an open and supportive place to learn and grow. read more

I wanted to try something different and saw the Flyhouse when I was eating at Sala Thai. They offer some cool classes including aerial classes. I tried Acro (acrobatics). It is circus acrobats and pretty interesting. I went for a series and should have just did a $25 drop in class. I spent alot of time as a base because I was scared of being in the air with my weight. They made me comfortable and even helped me "fly". Some of these terms are better seen in class than explained. I would love to go back and to an aerial class. They offer kid aerial silk classes also, but they fill up fast. The Flyhouse does shows in the local area and are amazing. read more

This place is awesome. Seriously, stop reading this review right now and register for a class :-). Ok ok, read the review first and *then* sign up for a class. I started coming to the Flyhouse about a year ago for aerial yoga. I will admit, I was pretty terrified the first time. You might be too--that's totally normal, and it shouldn't stop you from going. The instructors are gentle and supportive and they emphasize that they want to create a safe space--and they teach that way. I've never been pushed to try something I was completely uncomfortable doing, but they also make it clear that if you want to try something that seems scary, they'll support you all the way (both literally and figuratively). For aerial, you're generally split into groups of 2-4 working with one instructor for warm-ups and 2 apparatuses (apparati?). In addition to the instructors being so great, I've found that everyone who takes the classes is also really encouraging and will cheer you on when you successfully complete a move or sequence. As for the skills themselves, I thought of myself as relatively strong when I started the class, but you use muscles in aerial that I'm pretty sure you never would otherwise. But within a few weeks I was doing things that I had never imagined I'd be able to do. Plus, it's a totaly boost to my self-esteem--I feel *so* happy and accomplished each week when I leave class. Private classes are also great and a nice way to try things out if you're unsure about signing up for an entire series. I also recently started attending the acro classes, which are really fun to do if you have a partner to bring along (it's trust-building exercises!). They also offer all kinds of cool workshops throughout the year with special instructors coming in from all over the country. One tip: classes fill up really quickly and they're listed online pretty far in advance. I had to stalk the website regularly when I first wanted to sign up so I could get a spot. Once you're attending classes, they make an announcement about when the next series goes on sale, so this is really only an issue when you're first starting out. Working with Micha to schedule a class for a bachelorette party was refreshing. After sending her an email inquiring about availability for a certain date she called me almost immediately to figure out how we could make something work for our large group. She was extremely helpful and prompt with her communication. Unfortunately, our group had to postpone our bachelorette party plans due to the pandemic, but once again Micha was great to work with. Aerial yoga at the Detroit Flyhouse is hands down the greatest workout I've ever done. I despise going to the gym and running on the treadmill, lifting weights, and fighting for a spot on the pull-up machine. You'll get that workout times 50 during an aerial yoga class, and you'll be having so much fun you won't even realize it. All the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. The overall vibe of every class is comfortable and fun. If you can't do something right or keep falling, no one cares. They are all more than willing to help and give you positive words of encouragement throughout each session. Everyone becomes friends on the first day, after a few weeks you're all comparing blisters and bruises and showing off how many pull-ups you can do. Overall this place is highly recommended for anyone who wants the best workout of their life and to meet an awesome group of people. read more

We did a private aerial yoga class and it was great to try out the different 'stations' (not quite sure what to call the different apparatuses we were on) and see what we could do! I began going to the Flyhouse for Friday night Yin Yoga, a Friday night yoga class that is incredibly relaxing, as well as affordable- it is a $5 donation. The teachers for Friday night Yin Yoga (also known as Zen Yoga in some places) rotate, and the school is willing to have Yin Yoga nights in which the proceeds go to charity, if you are in charge of fund-raising. I signed up for a series of level 1 Aerial classes a couple of months ago, and I've been hooked ever since! The instructors really know their stuff and are always very supportive. It's a safe - and FUN - experience. I'm learning skills I never thought I'd have, and I'm loving it! They hold various workshops, and drop-ins (when space is available), so you can try out a class, etc. Classes fill up fast, but I'm glad that the class sizes are kept smallish. I highly recommend! My wife and I have been taking classes here for years - aerial, acro, and others. It is an amazing place to learn how to do amazing things. Instructors are all professional performers. Safety is a huge priority, which can sometimes slow the class down when compared to other places, but then again after years of classes, no injuries, and when hanging 10' off the ground, safety is important. Classes sell out very quickly. Drop-ins for classes are often available and highly recommended to get a sense of what's to come before committing for a full series. Private lessons are also a great way to get some experience or build on what you're learning in class. Aerial (silks, trapeze, lyra, etc.) will be painful the first few times you do it! Just like any other intensive activity you try out, it requires body adjustment and you're going to have bruises, aches, and pains in unfamiliar places. But also just like any other intensive activity your body will adjust quickly. Tons of fun, and a real feeling of accomplishment, growth, and development as you get stronger, more confident, and more skilled. read more

First off, I'm writing this as a senior teacher and co-owner of this wonderful circus school. Throughout my 8 years here we have sold out all of our classes, which is pretty amazing. It's not just because we have awesome teachers and an incredible curriculum, although that helps. It's really because of our great students! They make it all possible. Why are our students so spectacular? Because they help create the supportive, fun, and non-competitive environment our studio is known for. 5 stars for the staff -- they really are super talented, nice people that can help you at any level. But 1 star for the super strict return/exchange policy. I signed up for the 8 week Aerial Level 1 series, and although it was fun I couldn't really handle it physically. I am not strong enough to do any of the moves without an instructor giving me a boost and I found a lot of the apparatus to be quite painful. The back of my legs from behind my knees all the way to my butt were bruised black and blue from the hammocks and trapeze bars. I literally looked like I had been in a terrible accident. So, I didn't go back after the second session but wasn't allowed to switch to a different class (that wouldn't cause me serious pain) or get a refund. So, $165 for 2 out of 8 classes isn't exactly a great value. The takeaway: DO A DROP IN CLASS FIRST. Make sure you can handle it before you waste a bunch of money on a package like me. Lesson learned. read more
