    C'est M.

My 9 year old daughter and I signed up for a basic introductory and safety class with Detroit Flyhouse. Nicole was our teacher and she was great. We began with a warm up and she showed us how to get into the hammock. She taught us some basic poses, stretches and even a drop/fall. We had a blast. I was surprised how tough it was for me, but I also saw great improvement even within the hour! I think this is my new fun sport!

Warning: your face might hurt from all the smiling. Because you ran away to the circus.

There aren't enough words to describe how much I love the Detroit Flyhouse, nor is there any other place like it! I moved from LA about a year ago, and at the urging of a friend, signed up for Flyhouse's Conditioning Series. Having come from a city chock-full of every new workout/activity trend imaginable, I thought this might be like aerial yoga or a barre class -- that is to say "circus-inspired" but more to just get a workout in. But no. I could not have been more wrong. This is the REAL DEAL. I was hooked after the first class. The conditioning course was exactly that, a circuit of strength-building exercises utilizing various circus apparatuses (and, can I say, such a great balance if you're a runner looking for cross-training. I'm 99% sure Flyhouse enabled me to finish my first half marathon). But we also dipped a toe into circus moves...mounting the lyra or silk hammocks, or inverting under the trapeze. Holy hell, my upper body was so sore after the first class. In the best. way. possible. From there I signed up for a few Aerial series. And since then, the Flyhouse has become my happy place. I will be the first to say that it's challenging...but if you've got the right attitude and are willing to give it a try, the instructors are incredible at breaking the moves down and making it accessible to everyone. I've seen men and women from their 20s to their 60s and kids of all ages able to hop up and do the moves. I promise you'll surprise yourself with what you can do. And everyone in the classes is encouraging and will cheer you on. Can't say that about a barre class. It's also become my go-to activity for friends visiting from out-of-town! I've taken girlfriends from both NY and LA to drop in on classes with me, and it's been a huge hit. Despite having never done "circus" before, both were able to hop up and have a blast. TIPS: The Flyhouse classes are structured in 8-week series (same time/day each week), and there are no refunds available once you purchase. BUT there are often spots open in classes for drop-ins, so if you're unsure if it's for you...call and check out a class first! It's best for someone who's got a relatively stable schedule who knows they can meet up at the same time each week. My first series, I missed out on a few classes due to unforseen travel. But even then, it's completely worth it and I plan to keep coming back for a long, long time. One of these days I'll even get comfortable enough to perform in one of their showcases (practice, practice!). Summary: Flyhouse = all the stars. 10 stars if I could. And if you come and see a curly-haired redhead grinning ear-to-ear, it's probably me. Come say hi.

Highly suggest doing the tour before you register for a class and or membership because you will get a discount on your first class. The trainer was super attentive and will help you build up your confidence even if you came nervous like I did. You always hearing horror stories about things not going right when people use tools even after watching YouTube channels. I attended the three saw class which included on hand training and techniques on the panel, miter, and table saw. Please note in order to use their tools outside of training you would need to become a member which is still a great opportunity for someone who's trying to start or began a new crafting and or trade. Did I mention that there's two shop dogs there? Yes, they're two bloodhounds that walks around in the lobby. Unfortunately they're not always there but I believe they are in the a.m. so if you do a tour make sure you say hi and they have treats available. Strongly recommend this place. I can't say enough about how happy I was just to do the things outside of my comfort zone. Happy crafting!!!

Seeing quite a few contributions complaining about Tom, I couldn't help contributing my own…read moreexperience to correct the record! This past Sunday, my son had the pleasure of being road-tested by the very Tom Kaleta at the Lamphere High School testing site of Courtesy in Madison Heights, just next to Costco. After seeing my son being arbitrarily failed twice at another road-testing company in recent months (see more details here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/same-day-road-test-detroit), we are hesitant to come to do the road test at Courtesy, especially having read some of the not so pleasant feedback from some posters here. However, our experience with Tom has been nothing but joyful! Tom arrived right on time (10 minutes before the scheduled test) to set up the cones even though it was quite early in the morning. Tom is gentle, kind and easily approachable. He even tries to make small talk with my son to ease my son's nervousness. My son had a great time with both the parking and road tests. Unlike road testers elsewhere (again see above link for very bad experiences elsewhere), Tom never tries to trick you into failing. He wants to make sure that my son drives cautiously and safely. This is exactly what new drivers need. We are truly grateful to Tom's help that day. Thank you, Tom and Courtesy! Another benefit of taking the test at Lamphere High School for me personally is that when I waited for them to return from the road test, I got to walk around the nice trail in the city park right next, enjoying the morning fresh air with all the other people working out there on a Sunday!

Find somewhere else to sign up your child for the road test. I scheduled a road test in Lake Orion…read morethey called me while on vacation to cancel his road test saying they won't offer in Lake Orion anymore. They gave me a few different cities all which are far and not knowing I picked Bloomfield hills, upon searching it was 45minutes - 1 hour away. When I told them I want to cancel they said no refunds, ok we'll schedule me somewhere closer, they said they don't have anything in Rochester Hills or Romeo and won't know probably till mid September if there will be instructors. So it was their fault for canceling the Lake Orion location but you don't get your money back. I think they have all these locations but no instructors and you won't get your money back even if they cancel.
