Yall, I walked into this salon with a hot mess of a hair color and low hopes. I had previously had my hair dyed bright red, covered it up with a brown that was too dark and then faded to this weird brassy color, which I tried to fix at home with DIY color remover, blue shampoo, and box dye. All this plus the fact that my natural color roots were growing in meant my hair was a mess. I called other salons and the color correction it needed was being quoted at $200+. So I figured I'd give Elevate Salon a try, figuring they couldn't muck it up any worse than I had done myself. I dont know how she did it, but Sara completely fixed my hair. She consulted with a couple of other people (I assume the teachers, I didnt catch their names), really critically evaluated the best color correcting strategy, and worked some magic. I ended up with hair that was not only pretty close to my natural color, but somehow still had depth and warmth and not a trace of red. Honestly, I couldn't be happier! read more

Elevate has lots of potential, but in my opinion, some of the students aren't trained well enough to service customers. Looking around, the salon school is beautiful, again, there is potential. I was impressed as I walked in as it seemed very relaxing and professional. However, as the experience continued, I felt that the students could definitely use more education on their customer service, their listening skills, also, their technique and execution of basic services. I am proud of all young people who strive for more, so I won't go into much detail of the mishaps. I will simply advise anyone who goes there, to show photos of their desired outcomes, ask the instructors to check-in with the students if you feel they aren't following your wishes, and make sure you review your final bill and their menu/write-up of the services that you are asking for. I paid for my hair to be cut. There was no cut. I asked for a simple hair style; however, it wasn't executed properly. My toe nails were jagged and misshaped. Prior to me leaving, after first having my wash and thermal style, then my "spa pedi", my hair was already amiss. I left there looking and feeling as if I hadn't been serviced at all. read more

Spa pedicure, was a raised seat with a bowl. It did have hot water. They did try to do what was expected. But I don't think I got what I wanted. These are salon students. My experience was okay, at best. I have been to several salons with the massage chairs and this was not that. I don't think my feet were massaged or my calfs. Paraffin was not available. read more

The Royal Oak location has a hard time retaining students and instructors. There is one instructor there that is absolutely awful (Kim) to the students and treats them like they are her employees when they are paying students trying to learn. I have been there as a client, and she comes over and yells at a student over having water out. Turned out the water was MINE! The student was my daughter (unbeknownst to her.) She targeted and bullied my daughter for months to the point where she tried to transfer locations but they didn't have room for her and the directors tried to address it with the instructor but she went back to her old ways and made it unbearable for my daughter to be there. We since found out the school is known for dropping students and taking their money and running without students graduating. I don't know their graduation rate but I had heard from another school that Elevates grad rate isn't good! Utica may be a better environment but I would avoid Royal Oak at all costs. They let go of the one good instructor they had and then the one my daughter had issues with was there full time and it was terrible. They also took away Saturday makeup days due to not having instructors to work those days. I would avoid this location! read more

I came here yesterday with a friend, for the first time - they were doing an awesome Groupon deal (pay $27 for a gel manicure + pedicure) and we decided to try them out. The normal price is $37, I believe. Groupon was also doing 20% off that day, so I only paid about $22. (Groupon link: http://bit.ly/2FMZ4ei) The goal of us going together was that we could chat during our services, but it turned out that my friend got her fingernails done first, and I had my pedicure first. We did get to chat a bit since we were in the same room, but this was a little surprising. My technician was May (Mae?) and was very good. My toenails look FLAWLESS today, and my fingernails look good (although not flawless, if we are being honest). For the price I paid, I'm very happy with Elevate. Their normal prices are very reasonable, too, so I probably will be back at some point, especially since they gave us $5 off coupons to come back (eyebrow waxing would be $5 at that point!). They DO take tips, so after a $5 tip, my mani/pedi ended up being about $27. They also give you a 48-hour guarantee, which is awesome - meaning, if your polish chips within 48 hours of your service, you can come back and they'll fix it for you. A few reasons I give them 4 stars, instead of 5 (and yes, I'm being picky): 1. Bathroom was clean but a little messy - TP/paper towels on the floor, etc. 2. I've gone to Douglas J/Aveda before, in Royal Oak, which is a similar venue (esthetician school), and they offer drinks (water, tea, etc.) when you walk in, which was a nice touch that Elevate does not do. 3. I was surprised that their instructor never checked our nails - at Aveda they did that also. The instructor did check in a few times to make sure everything was okay, though. Other than those things, I'm very happy with my nails, and as of now (about 24 hours later), they haven't chipped yet ... fingers crossed. Also be advised that if you are doing a mani/pedi, according to my esthetician there it was supposed to take about an hour and 10 minutes (35 minutes per service); however, we arrived at 5:15pm and left around 7:45pm, so plan for about 2.5 hours if you are getting both done. --------- -EDIT, 5 days after my mani/pedi: three days in, one of the nail polishes COMPLETELY came off (see my pic). Four days in, I went to a lake party and for some reason BOTH of my big toes got scratches on the polish, so now you can see the nail. Changing my review to 3 stars because of this. read more

A fish market. I am not exaggerating. towels are missing/chewed up. blankets have bleach stains/ MULTIPLE blankets with BOOGERS. From client's perspective I would not wanna be laying on those. "it's washed its fine" isn't an answer. curtains are a disaster. stains, when you open/ close them POUR of dust! facial brush stick together like gorilla glue on them/hard as rocks. These are going on skin! -didn't have WORKING MUSIC for 3/4s of the program. had to play on iPad/constant ads. music that plays off the spa still has ads. half the stools are jammed/ dont adjust. -don't have makeup station. clients sit on salon chairs. coming for a facial won't do you good. I feel bad every time someone walks in that door. If they choose to respond to this they are going to gaslight with their response. Spa room looks like a prison cell. Whats up with granny smell? Feels like walking into an elderly hospital.  -products never in stock have to use OWN products we payed for. -found a spider in the filtering box. think of the clients that got facials with that steamer until spider was found. -we have a "leveling up" system... more like a "let's make more money off these girls system" it changes every week. If it is changing how are we supposed to meet the goals to graduate?  front desk LOST sheets. sounds like they just want MORE money. No Morals. -The disregard for fairness and hygiene is appalling. This establishment prioritizes cosmetology over esthetics, leaving us to fend for ourselves in a disorganized, unsanitary environment. lack of structure is evident, with inadequate supplies hindering education. Favoritism runs rampant, punishing some while turning a blind eye to others' misconduct. have to teach myself from scratch. focus on profit over student well-being is evident. My first pedicure with Emily in June was wonderful. I went back last week and had a pedicure with Olivia. She did a good job too. But I didn't realize the salon upgraded the service to "spa pedicure," so when I checked out, the price was $34. My first pedicure was around $20. No one asked me if I wanted the more expensive service. When I complained, I was told it was too late, because I already received the higher level service. Also, it was explained that since I am at a school, mistakes happen, and the client just has to accept the responsibility. I have had experiences, going back 25 years, with two other beauty schools in Oakland County and nothing like this ever happened to me. They called me a few days before and asked if I could reschedule to a later time the same day, which I was ok with. Then the day of the appointment , just a few hours before the appointment time, they called and said they were overbooked and needed to move me to a completely different day. at that point, I told them no thanks I'll go someplace else. Inclusiveness is promoted during the school tour & first day overview of class, shortly afterwards you will notice true bias behavior. There's also no structure whatsoever including curriculum & adherence to school policies! Bullying & harassment IS ALLOWED but standing up for yourself isn't even if multiple staff members were aware of the issue prior to you reacting. In addition to our tuition, we have to pay 1/2 price in order to practice MOST services on each other. There are new staff members & I'm hoping for a positive change but in the meantime students sign documents for each other, cheat on tests, use profanity excessively, & speak so vulgar that at times I think I'm on set of an adult film audition. There's so much more that can be said with me having videos & texts corroborating my statements but I have 2 more months & don't want it to be made more uncomfortable than it already is. I was so ecstatic when I first began now I'm just counting down the days until it's over. This was by far not my best decision made this year! read more

Alexandra is the best! I drove an hour and a half to get a European facial done by her. Worth every penny! She made me feel very comfortable. It was my first facial, so she explained everything as she went through the process. We started with a facial analysis to see what my skin needed and went through the whole lineup. Cleansing, exfoliating, a couple of different masks and moisturizers. I could be missing a step or two. I learned so much about my skin, and I walked away feeling relaxed. Then lied and said they wanted to show her where she went wrong but yet she didn't even know I was coming back and no instructor was with her. On the phone and in person I was quoted $18 for a pedicure and $12 for a classic manicure. I was even booked a day before over the phone before I got to my hair appointment that I was getting from this Salon. I even had a photo and showed what I wanted, I even have the long hair to do it, they didn't come close to the photo but I dealt with it because it still turned out pretty good after all It seem like I was one of the first students she had and the instructor did most of the cutting. the second day I went in I was booked for a facial, classic manicure and a regular pedicure. I arrived at 5:49, not enough time to do the facial and I was told at that time I didn't have a nail appointment which was at 7pm, there wasn't enough time for me and they were booked solid they said, "what do you want us to do about it?" was the comment made. Why didn't they call me? They had a WHOLE DAY to tell me my 7pm nail appointment wasn't gonna happen and I argued with them and told them I had one, then I said want to see the text confirming my appointment? If they were too busy why didn't they call to say not to come? so then they said we will make this right, I got what I thought was going to be a pedicure, I even peeled most of the nail polish of of my feet because I guess I had gel the last time they said, when I didn't get gel last time, they didn't even cure it at the other nail salon they put a fan on it because it was nothing but nail polish, so the other salon told me why the school couldn't get the nail polish off the school must have had a bad mixture, so I took the nail polish off myself., then she did the best she could since she really wasn't sure how to do a pedicure, she did ok for one of her first times. I get to the front desk, mind you I didn't get a manicure, I didn't get the facial and a $18 pedicure is now $34. So not only did they get my appointment right, they ripped me off and lied to me on the phone and in my face on how much the prices were and they put someone who wasn't ready on the floor. read more

I called today to get info on tape in extensions and I was told that they only had a few students that will install them. When I asked what the difference was between a tape in extension and a sew in extension, as I was trying to determine which type would be right for my fine curly hair, The woman on the phone ignored my question and immediately and abruptly retracted her prior statement and said, "no we don't do tape in extensions"., instead of acknowledging my question about hair extension type. I guess that she "forgot" for a moment before she told me they did offer tape in installation. So unprofessional. I was very disappointed at the lack of knowledge or service answering my questions. Valerie was so sweet and she did an amazing job! She blew my hair out great and went over it with a flat iron until it was perfect. I highly recommend Valerie if you go to this location! Today I went to the school and the place is very nice. The girl that took care of me was very nice to me. I understand this is a school and I should not expect perfection. I felt so bad for this girl. She was filing my nails with the tiniest nail file. I gol A manicure pedicure and the nail polish was so dry she could barely apply it. They said there would be somebody supervising her, I never saw no supervisor. I thought they would look at my nails once the job was done, but they didn't. This is not her fault, I think they should teach them better. My nails were not even fully covered by the nail polish, unless this was her first time I would understand but it wasn't. For some reason the Utica Elevate salon institute is not on yelp so I will review it here. Buyer beware. As soon as you walk in they asked me to show a picture of the service I wanted, even though i already made the appointment for it. They then automatically started tell you how much extra you have to pay for your service. I wanted to get a balayage and they told me well in order to get one, to prevent your hair from breaking off this is going to be this much extra and this much extra and if we refill the bowl it will have to be this much extra and this much extra and then two people worked on my hair, so I was obligated to pay tips for two people. It was horrible and on top of it all, my hair was brown when I walked in and brown when I left!!!! Even though the cheap L'Oréal lightener was there for six hours, they didn't even offer me a bottle of water to drink. I was so thirsty I thought I was gonna pass out it was absolutely awful. She damaged my hair so badly she had to cut 3 inches off of it. I was crying when I got home and I saw it I had no hair left completely cut, uneven, whatever whatever you do do not get Hair services from this place. I tried reaching Groupon for a refund, and it didn't work. Groupon just ignores me. The lightener didn't lift my hair at all! read more

Received a gift certificate for this establishment so I decided to use it a couple of weeks ago for a facial. I have a very hectic schedule and was looking forward to relaxing for a bit. The student did a good job, however, there were students in the same room chatting it up as I was trying to relax. I made a comment to my esthetician and she moved the curtain and told them she had a client. They disregarded her request to keep it down and continued to remain in place instead of leaving the room. Needless to say, I was peeved and didn't relax. I complained to the manager at the front desk and she in no way whatsoever took it upon herself to extend an apology nor did she even want to acknowledge what happened. I'm a fan of beauty schools in general and was excited to see this new location near Royal Oak High School. I went today for a haircut and manicure to mixed results. The students were all lovely. I could tell that the students had great relationships with each other and a positive learning environment. I got a decent trim. There does seem to be some opportunities for improvement. First was the appointment process. I was booked for 9 but apparently they don't usually start until 930. That seems like a weird mistake for the scheduler to make. The other thing was the materials. We went through 3 bottles of nail polish before we could find one wasn't goopy. Also my student couldn't find all of the supplies she needed. The manicure was a disappointment. Such a terrible experience I don't Know where to begin. I went in for a gel manicure. No wait time and I was there 4 HOURS in total. The student who did my nails told me she'd never done a gel manicure(no even practicing on other students). I thought no problem she's probably studied about it and the instructor will be over seeing. I was WRONG. She went to check with the instructor on what to do and she gave her a rough run through..that instructor NEVER came back. This poor student had no idea what she was doing, and even told me she was unsure what to do several times. I DO NOT blame the student for any of this, she was so sweet and apologetic. The "instructors" however, had no business just throwing that girl to a client when she didn't know what she was doing. After 2 hours and AWFUL looking nails I asked her if she could please go find an instructor, which she agreed needed to happen. Another instructor came and Initially acted like she didn't see a problem with the nails, she looked closer and agreed it all needed to be soaked off and re-done because there was no salvaging it. She stay for a while doing the nails herself while the student watched, then she handed it back over to the student (she genuinely tried to help her learn) but she was needed else where so had to leave the student to finish alone...the student messed them up again(not her fault, she just needs more guidance and training) I eventually gave up trying to have this fixed and knew I would head straight to another salon when I left. When it was done I had been there for 4 HOURS, and the nails looked awful. Both instructors looked at my nails and said they looked "good". I was not offered any refund etc...this is unacceptable. Not only did I waste my money and half the day there, but I had to go to another salon to have it soaked, removed, and redone. The next salon was shocked they let me leave with my nails looking SO bad. Spend the extra $10 and go to Royal Touch nails. You couldn't pay me to return to Elevate Salon. read more

Before I start critiquing, the nail technicians are amazing and deserve some shout outs. My sister and I got our nails done by Abby and Iris and they did amazing. They made sure our nails were done to perfection and that we had a great experience. However, this place is very poorly managed. I was first assigned someone who was NOT a nail technician because they were short staffed (of course I wasn't told this). I was SO thankful that someone finished up another appointment and could take over. Also our poor nail technicians had to spend a long time just searching for gel base coats and top coats because things were out/ poorly organized. read more

I came here on Wednesday to get a gel manicure and a full spa pedicure. The service was great and I was super pleased with my nails. First, I would like to say Elevate is an elegant salon-the people are friendly My Pedi/Mani Pedi-well, they do not use a scrubber/buffer on your feet, but they use an exfoliate lotion that is rubbed in using his hands. -they let your feet soak in a tub (not whirlpool) then they clip, shape and polish. If you have one of those thick nails that you need really filed/buffed forget it this VERY basic. My feet were not as smooth as I was expecting Mani--they do not soak your hands--they just clip, shape, push your cuticles back then polish your nails. Very BASIC I will go back though to see how they color hair--I think that is what they specialize in--Stay tuned for updates read more

I had the best experience ever here my first time!! I went in for a color correction from a previous salon's awful attempt at a blonde balayage from a colored brunette. Kodee did a phenomenal job at blending the color to make it look natural and blonde!! The results were incredible. I loved the atmosphere of the salon and enjoyed it a lot. I'm a long time client. I've been coming here for years. I'll tell you what, there's been some extremely talented students who've graduated from here! Sydney and Val, amazing! Sydney did the most beautiful blondes! Mari, she was a hair God. She excelled at everything! Emma was good. Karen was super talented, best blow outs ever! I really those girls, I haven't found anyone who even came close to their talent. I had a girl do my extensions last summer. She curled them. Once they were straight, I could how it wasn't blended at all. It looked bad. It looked choppy and uneven. There were long pieces, short pieces, and gaps with no hair. I think the student had a problem with the application and placement. She said she didn't know how to cut/blend hair. I wish someone would have told me that prior to my service! I definitely purchased enough hair packs and good quality hair too. The most recent visit, I had a student do a fancy high ponytail with curls and a braid, it was an extension piece that attached to your real hair. Again, good quality hair. She had a difficult time getting the extension to attach to my hair. The braid was too small. The top of my hair was flat, no volume, and not enough hair in front was left out. It didn't look anything like my inspiration pictures. It was also too low. Most of the curls were brushed out. It wasn't what I wanted, but I didn't want to be rude. However, I got pretty upset when it all fell out literally minutes after leaving the salon. Embarrassing and a waste of $60! It really just depends which student you get. Like I've said, a lot of the students I've seen before were absolutely amazing! However, I miss the ones who've graduated terribly. I doubt I'll ever find a student as good as them. Those students had pure talent, drive, and motivation. They knew what they were doing. As far as staff goes, most of the staff is truly amazing! There's only one staff member who's ever been rude to me, which was shocking. She was never rude before. I don't know what that was all about. They are students which is understandable. My advice, ask for a senior student or one who specializes in what you're requesting. You don't want to end up with a student who's inexperienced and uncomfortable doing what you ask of them. I always ask when booking my appointments. It really depends on which student you get. Some are better than others. You just have to be willing to take a chance and figure it out! Sometimes it's a good experience, sometimes it's a bad. It's a gamble. read more

I came here to get my hair done yesterday by a girl named Brianna H. Brunette, had to be 25 years old. Instead of making my hair blonde like I had asked, it came out orange!! On top of that once she dyed it multiple times after trying to fix it my roots are orange, the middle is brown, the bottom is blonde. Apparently they cant teach their students for shit here. Please never waste your money and never give their students the benefit of the doubt. I really hope she isn't graduating soon. Ummmm....there is polish on my skin, it's lumpy in some parts and too thin in other parts, .....one of the gals made my sister bleed!!! Then she proceeded to knock the nail table and all its contents over. On top of that I found the place to be filthy! The sinks where they did my pedi did not look clean at all! I made an appointment weeks in advance for a wash and blow out since I had family pictures. 30 minutes before my appointment, they called and said they couldn't do it anymore at the time I needed. They offered a later time but usually you schedule appointments for a reason. The person calling explained how students didn't show or came late. Not worth it to save a few dollars. read more

This review is only from a client perspective. I went in for a pedicure. I understand that this service will be done by a student, however I expected the instructor to be much more present. I left with wet polish that was still tacky to the touch 4 hours later. I'm not blaming the student, she is still learning. The instructor appeared to be disinterested. She would walk in the nail room and walk back out without really paying attention to her students. I would never recommend this place, I don't think the staff really cares. read more

I don't know about the hair services at Elevate, but I recently got a pedicure and couldn't understand why the instructors allow anyone with super long nails to work on customers. My nail tech was a very sweet girl but her pointy nails were about four and half inches long and curled downward. Obviously, she could NOT wear gloves, so I question the hygiene used. Also, because of her super long nails, she had a hard time gripping her tools and working on my toe nails. I was surprised that there was no supervisor/instructor monitoring the process. I only saw an instructor as I was leaving. I can imagine the Board of Health would have issues with the students working on the public with claw-like nails and NO gloves. She managed to complete the pedicure (after dropping her tools numerous times) but I won't be returning for any services at any time. read more

Made an appointment for a mani/pedi. I was asked to sign in and have a seat. Another woman also had an appointment same times as mine for the same. Twenty minutes pass we are still sitting and waiting. Many girls are @ the front desk chatting. The other women said she was not waiting any longer and walked out. I was called back 25 minutes later. There were no other customers in the room were they were working, so why the wait? I was asked to pick my polish. I was told I could't have the one I wanted only the "Gel" polish. Told the girl I am here for just a regular mani/pedi she said "you are down for Groupon" I said no I wasn't and she went up front to ask if I could have the regular nail polish. Again, I was asked 3 more times if I was there on Groupon. What mass confusion! The girl said we will start will the mani. She really did not have any thing in front of her to do my manicure, no finger bowl, lotion, etc.. Again. she stated thats a spa manicure. WTH? I said there is way too much confusion going on here. I also notice the foot baths looked dirty and unsanitary and also the room was very dark. I don't know how the girls can see what their doing. I did not see any supervisor/ manager in sight.
