The Old Mahar funeral home absolutely! This clown act?! Hell no!! The service was ok. But we lost our dad August 6, John French the office manager has lied REPEATEDLY to our family that he took care of all billing to the insurance company. Just 4 days ago he once again TO MY SISTERS FACE LIED THROUGH HIS TEETH saying he took care of all the paperwork!!! It took myself calling the home office in the state of Georgia and then speaking to the district manager to actually START getting the paperwork STARTED!!! John French lied over and over to my sister saying it was all in order... when in fact TODAY after what I am sure the district manager spoke to him and funny... right away called my sister and suddenly needed her personal information to even begin getting this done!!! A grieving family should NEVER be put through this!!! EVER!!! Not only has the funeral home NOT been paid... the life insurance policies have not been processed all because of this man!!! Buyer beware!!!! This place is a joke!!!! I'm absolutely appalled!!!! They are trashing the good Mahar name and riding the glory of their name! DO NOT EVER USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!! Our loved ones deserve so much more!!! Grief is tough enough without all this grief!!! Seriously disgusted!!!!! read more

I recently had to make arrangements for my first funeral (thankfully not my own) and am so glad I chose Mahar. The entire staff was nothing short of kind and supportive during this highly emotional time, and took care of everything down to the smallest detail, even making suggestions like having military honors at the funeral. We decided to have the flag presented to my grandfathers favorite nephew, as well as his namesake, and I asked that he not be told in advance. The look on my cousins face made it all worthwhile, and the memories created with the help of the staff made for a beautiful celebration of a great man. We are incredibly grateful to be allowed to mourn with dignity (and always having a box of tissues within reach)....thank you. read more

I love old cemeteries, so we decided to drive out of our way to visit this one during our fall…read moreweekend in VT. It was worth the trip! Truly beautiful in the fall, and parking was super easy right in front of the cemetery gate! The cemetery is next to an old church, and the headstones right up front are beautifully maintained... gleaming white with placards indicating the historical figures buried as well as the stone carvers who crafted the headstones. I learned a surprising amount about Vermont history just reading all of the placards throughout the cemetery. There are many family plots of some of Vermont's founding fathers and war heroes. We also enjoyed reading some of the old headstones for interesting quotes. There are many signs directing to Robert Frost's family site which is tucked in a back corner under a small tree. This place is definitely worth a visit.

At the time, I called around to at least 4-6 different places in the Albany area to understand the cremation options available, at a very stressful time obviously. Roy was BY FAR the most compassionate, patient, responsive, and clear about what to expect. Seriously, you just don't want to deal with the impersonal or callous attitudes that came across in my first phone call with some of the other places that offer cremation services. There wasn't even the smallest hint of anything other than the ideal level of genuine helpfulness from Roy. On top of that the prices were extremely fair, and the environment and decor in the Simple Choices funeral home is very comforting. Looking back, it also feels good to have supported a business & team that is committed to doing the right thing for people at their worst times. They live out ALL the values stated on their website. Oh, and I should also mention just in case anyone's looking for this detail in a review - our family isn't Christian, and Roy was nothing but pure kindness and understanding on adjusting the decor in the funeral home for our small family viewing. Apex has come to our 3 apartment home a hand full of times and has always been fast and efficient…read more Knowing the problem almost immediately after arriving and fixing it. He's replaced one of the furnaces, unthawed one of the hardest frozen pipes issues we've had, replacing parts accurately-knowing it was the issue without second guessing himself, replaced our shower values which are hard to get out but he seems to have every tool for any job needed. Replacing our hot water heater and more. I'll be honest and say we tried a few others for lower prices for all of them to fail and having to call apex to finish the job n mess from the 1st person that they couldnt figure out(like 4 different companies). Lesson learned for sure! While they were here I explained an issue I was having in the main bathroom, they removed the toilet and again immediately explained the problem. They were so great and so helpful that they will be returning to install a new toilet! I HIGHLY recommend these techs, who arrive on time. Ps I'm an older female and I appreciate their consideration towards me. And they were amazing with our dogs, so amazing!

I understand that with the prevalence of spam calls these days, receiving a call from a number outside your area is suspicious. Consequently, when they did not answer, I naturally left a voicemail containing all the necessary information regarding my request. The response I received was a text message containing a single question mark. This escalated into a ten-minute text conversation during which they appeared to be fixated on the fact that I had an area code from a different state rather than engaging in a discussion about our needs or even simply calling to review our request. This behavior was particularly peculiar given that they themselves have an area code outside of Vermont. Therefore, considering that we were unable to overcome the obstacle of my different area code, I concluded the conversation and proceeded to explore alternative options.

I have been remiss, so this review comes some time after the fact but I don't think there are enough words to thank John Mahar for everything he did when my husband died. It was the week between Christmas and New Year's, snowy and bitter cold but John was right there through the whole process to help and support us. I will always be grateful. read more
