I'm in this area a fair amount and yet have only just recently discovered how fantastic E16 is. The tasting room is located on a busy corner right smack in the middle of Fairplay's wine country. It's unassuming from the front exterior, but we were pleasantly surprised by how sleek it is inside. And that wine cave for members with the enormous antique bar and handcrafted walnut tables? Simply gorgeous. Although everything I have tried on my visits here has been quite good, the real star at E16 is the award-winning pinot noir, which is also nearly impossible to find in this region! If you talk to the owner, Robert, you'll quickly learn that pinot is his passion (I can totally relate) and his partnerships with revered vineyards throughout California are how he's getting such delicious pinot noir to Fairplay. I've now been twice to the tasting room with friends, including most recently during Passport weekend, and each time have had a terrific experience. I bought a couple of bottles of their pinot and am also seriously considering joining their wine club. E16 is like a slice of Napa (without all the pretentiousness) dropped right in the heart of Fairplay and I am all about it. Definitely stop in and try the wines! read more

E 16 winery and chef Joe. Just wow. My friend Maria is a wine blogger. Came up yesterday with a group of 5 women. Amazing service. We stayed for the paia night dinner. It was a huge feast. The food was delicious. The service was 10/10 the best. The place is adorable. We sat and drank in the wine cave. Hard to find pinots in this area! Super stoked to find a place that had lots of options. Sad that they didn't have a pinot flight. Definitely recommend having a pinot flight on the menu at all times. The outside isn't too much to write he about. They are near a Bistro and a creek. The cool feature is the modern ambience inside. The cave and lighting is awesome. On Saturday March 30 we visited E-16 winery. The experience FAR exceeded my (our) expectations. We cruised in late in the day, the wines were exquisite; yes, but Joe, an owner, wine maker and chef guided us through a tasting. He challenged our palates by having us first taste the wine, adding a bite of chocolate, tasting the wine again then waiting and tasting the wine in a few minutes. He manipulated the phenols and our palates changing the way we perceived each taste. This tasting opportunity was far above food pairing. About a year ago some friends and I came here for a private wine tasting. And it was awesome. So we became members. And have really enjoyed the wine. (Always be responsible with alcohol. And no drinking and driving.) Fast forward to now... and a lot has changed. I've moved offices and blah. And totally forgot that I had this wine membership, because of the frequency of which they ship out. Well they shipped me some bottles to my old office address. And needless to say UPS, E16, and I were not on the same page. But we fixed that and all is well. I'm giving these guys 5 stars because of how Kristin handled the whole shipping thing. How she didn't make any excuses... she just took care of things. And in this day and age of pointing the blame and fingers... it's nice to recognize someone for just being human and decent. It's not if mistakes will happen... it's when and how will you own them. So Kristin, thank you! Finally, if you in the area... go see them. The cave tasting room is awesome. The wines are awesome. An nice find. Was at a winery we discovered recently (Sentivo). They suggested E16. Giving us tokens that made us wine club members for the day! Driving up thought the building looked like it was a fire station or garage in its earlier life. First visitors there. Mick met us and made us feel like family right from the beginning. Eagerly telling us the history of E16 and their wines. (the building was an old fire station) Tasting room was bright and airy. The huge garage doors were open and let in the light and fresh air. In back is the "cave" which was set up as a speak easy. Mick told us the history of the gorgeous bar in the back. There are leather chairs and sofas and a large table for private tastings. We enjoyed all of the wines tasted. Particularly enjoyed the whites. Purchased four bottles. Will probably join club, after releasing a couple other wine clubs...... Will be back.... read more

I've been to nearly all the wineries around Plymouth/Shenandoah, Placerville area and Fairplay and E16 is our favorite. Robert creates outstanding wine and provides a customer experience that makes each visit feel like visiting family. Driving through Amador County on CA-124 and eventually the County Road E16, I was amazed to discover a thriving wine growing region with tasting rooms galore! We stopped at a nearby olive oil tasting room and tasted a few delicious oils before coming up to the brand new tasting room that just opened by E16 Wines. (In full disclosure, my cousin is the owner of E16 Wines.) The tasting room offers some of its locally-grown wines - the grenache blanc is a great one for hot summer days! But what makes this winery stand out is their selection of pinot noirs from California's best regions - Santa Lucia, Russian River, Anderson Valley, etc. These are elegant pinots that showcase California's best! Mick, the tasting room manager, was friendly as can be and knows Amador County wines very well. He was previously at Perry Creek Winery. The cave has an amazing antique bar and dining table and is available for private tastings and events. I can't wait to go back for more E16 wines - but also to visit the other wineries in this region. read more

I was shocked this past weekend when we went to a club release party out by the creek. The older lady that took us to our table was not wearing a mask and the other lady with dark hair that served us, she did not wear a mask. We had ours on and a few other people did too. But what I did notice that a large group of people came later to the tasting and knew the two employees, they came with no mask on and all were giving each other hugs and so close to all the other tables as they stood in the middle talking!! I was shocked to see this, especially being a winery were food was being paired with the wines. We just had been at four other close by wineries within two days and they all worn mask. I like the wines but won't be going back until the virus is over. Oh, but I have to say, when we went into the winery to pick up our club order, the two employees behind the bar, in the tasting were wearing mask....I hope they stay away from the other two older employees who felt it was ok to not wear a mask!! read more

We have been to E16 twice now. The first time we didn't know that they were even open. However, as we were driving by, we noticed that they 2 doors were open and we were being waved at by people inside the tasting room. We immediately turned around and were treated to a wine tasting with Robin. Such a great experience! Yesterday, 1/28/18, we stopped by E16 again. This time Mick poured for us. He was fantastic and we were treated to wines on the pouring list and also several "bonus" pours. The Chardonnay was very pleasant, hitting all of the nuances that a great Chardonnay does. We ended up purchasing 4 bottles and will continue to include E16 as a destination whenever we are in the area! read more

I'm a wine lover. Not just any wine but quality wine. And the tasting room experience is what rounds it out for me. Prior to Covid-19, E16 was always on my wine tasting stops. The staff were always professional, accommodating, ensuring no one is ever overlooked, even on their busiest days. Martin is my favorite. He's humble, very good at explaining the origin of the crop and harvest, an all around gentleman. Chardonnay and Viognier are my two top whites. E16 makes a very nice and elegant Chardonnay and Viognier. Both, hard to find in the Foothills. I'm fussy about my Pinots. I lived in Sonoma County for 6 years and had access to some amazing Pinots, as well as Chardonnay and Viognier. E16 brings the class and quality I'm looking for in wine, in addition to a great tasting room experience. Can't wait to see the sign go up "Open for Tasting". Until then, I will SIP enjoying my wine club and extra E16 purchases. read more

We are members in several Amador and Somerset wine clubs and E16 is certainly one of the best. The wines are excellent and we are always warmly welcomed. Last weekend we attended their Easter Day brunch and had a very enjoyable time. We enjoyed delicious food and wine and listened to live music while sitting on the patio in a beautiful setting. The only negative comment that I have is that there was a young man who apparently worked there sitting in a chair and drinking a bottle of beer at the front of the tasting room when we arrived. Later when I went inside to use the rest room I saw him outside the front door vaping. It could be that he was new and does not realize how this looks to people arriving, if so I would suggest a bit more training. Otherwise everything was first class as usual. read more
