We were in town for the weekend on a wine trip with friends and everywhere we went, we heard about Cooper Vineyards. So of course we had to make a visit to their tasting room. It's a beautiful and large winery with lots of seating inside and outside. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and were seated in their enclosed back patio. And were told that their wine tasting was complimentary! Wow! Their marsanne white and barbera were excellent. The wine tasting was fun thanks to our hostess Jane. She kept us entertained. She told us all about their winery and it's production. Unfortunately this was our 3rd winery of the day and we were pretty wined out so we only ended up buying two of their barberas. We bought both. We sat outside, the grounds are pretty and staff was also very friendly. They are constantly bringing you water so that was nice. They do not serve food , only minimal snacks so bring your own . We got 2 tiny trays they sell with cheese and salami. $18 was I bit steep when they cost like $4 at sprouts but our fault for not bringing any crackers or snacks . Rob at Jeff Runquist recommended Cooper Vineyards during a visit a few months ago so we took a chance on a new winery. Dick Cooper was apparently known as "The Godfather of Barbera" and I can see why. The award-winning barberas were insanely good and at a reasonable price point considering the accolades (Jeff Runquist sources some of their barbera grapes from Cooper, no wonder it's so good). The tasting room is on the smaller side but the grounds are gorgeous and the service is always friendly and attentive, even when it's crowded. I know they're currently looking for a new owner but I hope the wines (the Blondie, the barbera, and old vine zin are to die for but everything is good) and level of service continue. Ambience and atmosphere in the tasting room room was fun. Janet was a great host for wine tasting and fun to talk to. Our favorite wines to take away from the tasting were the Primitivo, Barbara and the Dicembre. They have a nice grass area that would be great for a family picnic. Bring the kids, dogs and a lunch. Then grab a bottle of the Primotivo (which will go with most any hearty lunch) and sit on the porch or the grass for family time. read more

Our second winery stop for the day was Cooper Vineyards. Again, we selected wineries in the area that were dog friendly, since we had our two dogs with us. I appreciated that they let us sit indoors, and all of the staff were extremely kind and welcoming. They definitely showed our dogs some love to! As for the wines, hands-down these are some of the best wines that I have had in Amador County. My husband and I enjoyed pretty much every single wine that we tried and seriously contemplated leaving with a full case. We settled on four bottles - two whites and two reds. Wow I love this winery!!! First visit and highly recommend to everyone for a fabulous COMPLIMENTARY wine tasting and beautiful grounds that lend itself to both a relaxing and fun atmosphere with very friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming staff. They have COVID practices in place, offering curbside pickup, social distancing, and limited capacity. No reservations accepted. First come, first serve, so you might have to wait for a table for wine tasting. There is one entrance and check-in station at the very front of the building. Luckily we were seated right away on the comfortable and shady back patio, facing the vineyards. Doug was our wine host and he gave us a brief history of the place since it was the first time at Cooper for most of us. We sampled 6 wines. Prices per bottle started from $24. Very good barbera (made from their own grapes) and zin and loved the "Roussane," a very smooth and buttery white wine. There are a few picnic tables out front and the very nice, air conditioned, clean bathrooms are located near the entrance of the parking lot. Family owned and ran Cooper Vineyards may be a smaller scale winery in the area, but they are big on hospitality and offering a wonderful wine tasting experience! read more

They do bring you each wine in a "carafe" for the table and you pour yourself. They do briefly tell you a bit about the wine, pouring it yourself was a little different. I was lucky enough to get into this private event for a select few Yelpers to come and enjoy their wines along with bbq from Billy Bones catering and live music. We had free wine tasting and if it wasn't for Yelp, I wouldn't have known about this establishment since these wines aren't sold in stores. Upon check in, I was handed a goody bag with wine foil cutters, unlimited wine tastings, and a voucher for free bbq lunch for me and hubby. Doug, our sommelier was very entertaining and knowledgeable. It was quite a difficult choice choosing a bottle but ended up buying two with a ten percent discount. We met up with some friends and enjoyed our food on one of the many picnic tables under the mature trees. The band played, weather was beautiful and Cooper vineyards was the perfect setting to end my Yelp weekend in the Gold Country. Thank you Cooper wines for your generosity. If you're looking for a fun wine tasting experience along the Shenandoah wine trail, you should definitely add Cooper Vineyards to your list! Cooper was the last winery that I visited while out in Amador County and it left a great lasting impression. I attended a barbecue and live music event which featured barbecue from Billy Bones BBQ and a complimentary tasting of their featured wines. Babs assisted me in the tasting room and she was such a delightful host! She gave a very detailed description about each wine that I tasted and explained a little bit of history about Cooper Vineyards. Cooper Vineyards is known for their lusciously smooth Barbera and rightfully so! I indeed loved the smoothness of both their 2016 Barbera and their 2015 Reserve Barbera. However, my favorite of the bunch was their 2017 Viognier which was crisp, light and fruity. I've been trying to expand my white wine collection, and this Viognier was the perfect addition to my wine rack! But, I have a feeling that it won't stay there for long, especially since the weather is still warm out. Their indoor tasting room has a very classic feel to it. It's filled with aging barrels and has two different tasting bars that are lined up on the opposite side of each other. Both tasting bars were lively and the sommeliers are very social and interactive here. Their indoor tasting room actually opens up to their back patio area where they have small platform that is used as a stage for live performances. They had a great live band playing during my visit and they were killin' it up on that stage! This winery is dog friendly and there's a large grassy field near the entrance that's perfect for dog play or even to lay out and have a picnic. They also have a few picnic tables out there if you aren't a fan of being in the grass. When you first pull up, you'll see their iconic work truck parked right on their lawn. I posed with a friend while sitting on the truck and the pictures came out great! Billy Bones BBQ was absolutely delicious! They were catering the event but I just learned that they will be exclusively catering for Helwig Vineyards in the future. Be aware of the meat bees if you're planning on eating here! They won't sting you, but they can be very annoying, especially if you're afraid of bugs and insects the way that I am. Cooper is surrounded by the prettiest vineyards! The vineyard views are a'plenty here. Everyone that I came across was extremely friendly and hospitable. I'm glad that I made Cooper Vineyards my last stop! Wine tasting during covid.... staff was knowledgeable and friendly. We did not feel rushed and were able to soak up the atmosphere and the sunshine. The back patio was private and socially distanced from other guests. While we were there we could hear the laughter from a book club who was enjoying their purchased wine and they too were socially distanced. Great time and great wine! We can't wait to go back again. Great tasting room and winery grounds. Plenty of space for a picnic or walking around. Besides seeing the grape vines you can see some walnut trees and there are picnic benches out in the front under trees in the shade. They sell olive oil from the olives grown on the ranch as well. Two kinds - an early harvest which is much more bitter and sharp flavored, and then a mature olive harvest oil which is much more buttery and smooth. The tasting room has two long counters on either side of the room and we like the styles of their wines, Sauvignon Blanc, Barberas and Primitivo. This is the home for Barbera grapes in California, in my opinion. Many local vineyards source their Barbera fruit from this vineyard and the juice is sublime. The vineyard is stunning and it's family owned and operated. During Covid, as a consumer, I tolerated not being able to taste the latest vintages before buying them and accepted the risk that I would enjoy the wines. Now that we've moved on and operations have normalized, I look forward to tasting new vintages and learning about their wines. Cooper is popular as they sell out quickly, which is a fabulous advantage for them. On my most recent visit last weekend, they offered six wines on their tasting menu and had another large handful available only for purchase. I had walked in planning to buy two cases and sign up for their wine club. After our tasting of their assigned wines, I noticed they had (3) different Zinfandels on their purchase list. Now that Covid is behind us, I'm unwilling to spend $40 on a bottle that I haven't tasted. The staff was lovely, yet I found the tasting room manager arrogant and inflexible to open any wines outside of the assigned list for the day. Every other winery I've had the pleasure of visiting have never turned down a sale by refusing to open a bottle of wine. They tried to explain to me what their favorite Zin is, which palates differ by person. I appreciated their perspective, yet if I'm going to spend $500 for a case of wine, I need to taste it first. The tasting room manager was emphatic and rude and I was so taken aback by her attitude that I ripped up my completed wine club form and didn't buy any of the wine. I love the experience and choose to spend my money where it is appreciated. As much as I love the vineyard, the wines I tasted, and most of the staff, they lost a $1200 sale that day, and future sales, as I will not be returning. Part of the wine tasting experience is the connection with the staff, asking questions about the growing season, the production, etc. it's difficult to have a conversation when plexiglass partitions are still up on the tasting bar. Not sure what that's about as haven't experienced that at any other tasting room either. This vineyard will be fine without my business, yet a cautionary tale for folks who want to connect with the wineries, staff, and winemaker you're tasting with. read more

We had a great day wine tasting a few weeks ago ending here. One of the other wineries recommended this place and I'm so glad we checked it out. We went on a week day which is the best because it is less crowded and there is time for the person that pours the wine to really explain the wines and ask questions as to our preferences. wonderful, family-owned winery is a must stop for any visit to Amador. Dick Cooper is responsible for bringing Barbera to this area and lots of other wineries in the area use his grapes as well. Their Barberas are superb of course but their other reds are also wonderful. If you like port style wines don't miss the Dicembre which goes great with chocolate. We did do a Covid-friendly seated wine tasting this summer with our own tasting bottles and it was great, with friendly service. Visited Cooper's this weekend and had another great experience. The staff is always welcoming and their COVID procedures made us feel very comfortable. They serve their tastings in mini-carafes and let you pour into your own glasses. They have sanitizing supplies throughout and provide space heaters at your table if the outside gets a bit chilly. They seat groups on a first come basis, which we prefer, because when they first opened since COVID they booked reservations but we felt somewhat rushed to get in and out. I was just up over Memorial Day Weekend - it was bustling but not hectic with clear covid protocols in place. We did not feel rushed. The staff are always welcoming and knowledgable about their wines, seeming happy to chat about the farm and what they are pouring. There are picnic tables out on the lawn - we found it easy with kids if you take a meal and adults in your group take turns tasting in the tasting area. I've never left without a bottle or four.
