E3 is like Comicon but for the video game industry: new titles go on show here and the freshest technologies make their debut. But E3 has always been just for people in the industry: video game developers and entrepreneurs and even just people who work at a GameStop. To my surprise, this year (2016) for the first time E3 hosted an outdoor event called E3 Live (at LA Live) immediately outside the convention that was open to the public. Since it was free with EventBrite ticketing I didn't expect much since I figured all the truly cool stuff would be saved inside for the industry folk. But they actually had some really great stuff for us common folk to check out! We got to try new VR games(virtual reality was definitely the talk of E3 this year), including wearing the Oculus goggles. Facebook (which owns Oculus) had a big room setup where you could also the new changes coming to Facebook and Instagram. It's not your grandma's FB and IG! They will be incorporating in a lot of live video and you'll be able to swipe and move things around on your screen with a touch of your finger. The outdoor E3 event also was home to a giant Doritos arcade tent which included complimentary alcoholic drinks and endless bags of Doritos including the brand new 4-flavor Mix Arcade Doritos. There were free concerts (including Steve Aoki and Wiz Khalifa and DJ Jazzy Jeff) at the 6-story Doritos Mix Arcade stage which was a giant interactive arcade console. They even gave us wristband controllers so we could engage the giant screen above the stage at times. I'll probably never be inside the real E3 for industry folks, but I had so much fun at the free E3 Live event for non-industry people and I'll definitely get tickets for it next year.

You were better... I went to E3 this year for my birthday week and boy it was disappointing. I also went last year and every year it seems to go downhill. Last year for 2016 they had so much cool things due to the release of all the cool VR games. This year just lacked a lot of elements and people. Crossing my finger you'll be better next year!

It was mine and my bf's first time at E3 since this was the first year they opened it to the public! It was a lot of fun and definitely a must go to if you're a huge video game fanatic. They had two exhibit halls open that were filled with some of the biggest names in the industry such as Nintendo, Sony, PlayStation, Xbox, etc! We even got to meet the voice actor of Mario from Super Mario Bros. which was awesome! There were so many games we wanted to try but the lines were horribly long. Mario Odyssey was one of the popular games that we really wanted to try but the wait was about 2-3 hours long, which was a bummer cause you get this cool hat at the end if you play! Lol. Destiny 2 had a 7 hour wait to play and pretty much the whole place was packed so it was definitely hard to play anything. Since this was their first time opening to the public, I hope they get better on organization for next year if they do decide to still keep it open. It's not your typical fan convention so you could tell they barely had any merchandise or freebies to give away. Parking was a bit of a hassle but there were parking lots offering spaces for about $20-30 for the whole day which wasn't too bad. They also have a coffee shop inside the convention center, a taco station and a few food trucks outside and inside the exhibit for if you get hungry! They even had a bar that serves beer in the exhibition hall. Overall we had a fun time! We would definitely go back again next year, let's just hope it's a bit smoother!

My dad used to be in the video game industry for years and years while I was growing up. He first took me several years ago and I thought it was great (even though my feet hurt so much at the end of it! A lot of walking...wear sneakers)! Now that my family now lives abroad, I no longer go with my dad, and hadn't gone for a while, but my boyfriend had only been to the small E3 expo at the Santa Monica airport a few years back...so I felt bad that he hadn't gotten chance to see E3 in all it's glory. So as the great girlfriend that I am (see? I'm sooo humble), I got both of us badges and off we went (a few months later) to the expo. A lot of swag everywhere, although the huge free bags that had been given out completely ripped a few hours after getting them. Other than the bag that ripped, there are free keychains, batteries, lots of t-shirts, stickers, even sketches by Disney artists of your fav. Disney characters (long wait but was super fun), and a bunch of other stuff. George Lopez was there, as were some Playboy Playmates, Bear Grylls, Steven Speilberg, etc... The Nintendo 3DS was the big thing at the expo but unfortunately it was an hour and half wait to play. Wait at your own risk. Lots to look at, lots to play, lots of demos to view, etc... As in industry-only event I know it's not something that is available to the general public at all (and there is a strict 17 and older rule, unless you're a VIP buyer...you will see about 2-3 kids at the expo that are with their folks). If you know someone who works in the video game industry that can get you in, I would highly advise you to beg them to get you a badge. My boyfriend loved and I'm happy he got to see the best of E3.

Always a good time at E3. It basically comes down to: 1) Demos: These lines are usually very short so you can try out as many games to your heart's content. 2) Free swag: These lines take the longest and in many cases aren't really worth your time since it can take hours to get a measly t-shirt. However, some of my friends rave over lining up if the prize is E3-exclusive. 3) Photo op: Tons of tons of photo ops and cosplays for you to put on facebook or hang up on a canvas in your bedroom wall forever. 4) Networking: If you're in the entertainment industry, E3 is quite a convenient way to expand your professional network.

Oh e3. We have a love-hate relationship. On one hand, we've been together for 3 years now... And on the other, you've been changing for the worse. You're slipping. This year has been the most disappointing. Some stands were severely understaffed and left patrons waiting for 2+ hours... South Park was one of those booths. Their workers kept going on breaks and closing the lines. Can't you rotate? The Zelda line for the game play... Oh my goodness. I heard people lost shoes, people got into fist-fights and were bleeding AND STILL STAYED IN LINE... A race to get in line and a battle-royale on the way there... Some diehard Zelda fans and the collectible coin was worth the wait... It's going to $200 on eBay. The resident evil line only let 120 the first day and 90 on the other 2. Basically no one saw that one. Gone in less than 15 mins after opening. PlayStation forced people to download their "experience PlayStation" app to sign up for times for their demos. I'm sure they meant well. Reduce the lines. But the app wouldn't download on my phone for the life of me. I had to wait for them to let me queue without the reservation. I really enjoyed God of War! Yayayayayyaayyayyyy!!! Oh Mafia 3... You made me wait FOREVERRRRRRRR... I don't know where all the media people come from but they come in hordes for Mafia 3. The theater fills up with the media and only a few people from the actual line get in. Luckily, I waited with someone so I went to get my fortune told. Also, they had free beer towards the end of the day. This year, the lines were long and the free swag was a lot less than last year. I even ran into 2 guys who blatantly told me they got in with stolen badges... I guess you can't catch me all. Best swag this year? Zelda coin Lego dimensions Green Arrow figure Injustice 2 T-shirt Mafia 3 shirt Gears of War T-shirt Tekken cap South Park coon pin Critiques: Lego dimensions: the seating was cute but definitely not practical. It definitely reduced the amount of people you could put into a showing and really inflated the wait time. Take a hint from "Injustice" and stick to the "theater-style" approach. P.S. The chairs smelled horrible and the air flow was bad in that room. Major headache. South Park: get more staff. Rotate and don't close down the line for break. Inflates the wait times. Mafia 3: Take a cue from Lego dimensions and have Media and VIP sign up for timed slots. It really sucks waiting for hours AT THE FRONT OF THE LINE, seeing people being so close and just end up leaving. I get Media is important but we normal people did our time to see the demo too. Love us ): Nintendo Zelda: If there is a "non-game-play line" and a "game play line" ...make sure you don't let the "non-game-play" PLAY THE GAME... Obviously one waits astronomically longer than the other. Make it fair. Also... No one wants to wait 2+ hours to get a ticket to play and then another 2+ hours to actually get in to the hall to play. Improve the turnover rate or open more stations. PlayStation: whyyyyy didn't that app download on my phhooonneeeeee...???? Anywho, E3 was nice enough to incorporate a "E3 live" outside for the general public. It offered a little taste of the E3 was about but according to reports from friends... It was less game play and more about selling items. That is definitely not what E3 is about. More games, less sales.

    Jenny L.

Nerdgasm all the way. Love the different areas for software and hardware. Best thing? Free embroidered Oswold the Bunny hats by Disney. Sure, the wait was 1 hr. but it was so worth it.

I haven't missed an e3 convention since it started. If you haven't been to e3 and are a gamer, you are missing out big time. And if you are in marketing, and expert in tradeshow booths, in the entertainment industry, etc. and you haven't been to e3 either, you don't know what a good display is! e3 exhibitors have the best tradeshow booths you can imagine. They spent millions on these booth presentations. A site to see and sensory overload for all who attend. Always impressive each year, however quality in booths and booth babes have gone down a bit since e3 started. Meanwhile, gaming visuals and gameplay gets better.

    I can't believe I'm here!

The geek shall inherit the earth. That definitely seemed true on Wed, when I found myself packed in with thousands of video game insiders and tech nerds at E3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This was my first time at the event and I was super-excited (I always wanted to go as a kid). For anyone who likes video games, PC games, or just the hottest new technology, E3 is pretty much nirvana. My experience was not at all disappointing. I was BLOWN AWAY by the incredible sets, displays, and the overall effort that goes into this event! All the major game labels had huge booths/exhibits to show off their newest titles with demos, trailers, and interactive displays. Playstation had a 2-story glass gaming"house", and EA was displaying a Need For Speed car. I was cracking up watching people ham it up to Lady Gaga songs on the Dance Central demos. Live zombies (is that a contradiction?) in cages menaced passerby at the Dead Rising 2 booth, I posed for photos with the alien claw toy at the Toy Story 3 booth, and people waited in huge lines to demo the new Mortal Kombat game. And like any good Yelper, I love free swag- and there was A LOT. Some of the very cool and dorky goodies I picked up? Numerous tote bags, a free pack of Energizer batteries, candy, a Sims 3 t-shirt and floating green diamond headband (if you know the game, you know what I mean), several other t-shirts, a bunch of Lego people, bottles of NOS energy drinks, and a PacMan lanyard (!). I tried a couple different games and watched many more, including the new Twisted Metal for PS3- ooh! Motion sensor technology was a big thing this year, with XBox unveiling their new Kinect system and Playstation debuting Move. Plenty of smaller labels and companies were represented as well, along with various gaming accessory booths. I have to also add- the eye candy was also quite good and plentiful- if you like dorky/cool gamer guys that is, hehe. Basically, E3 is an epic event if you enjoy gaming at all. If you get a chance to go, definitely take it. Trust me, security is tight and it is not easy to get in. Finally, I want to profusely thank my friend who got me in- he worked very hard to get me my own pass and everything. Thank you SO MUCH, I had a fantastic time! I only hope I get to attend again next year!

shit just got real... I mean, 15 years. 15 long, hard, grueling years of being on the outside looking in. Of reading GamePro, Game Informer, Next Generation, IGN, PC Gamer, EGM, Nintendo Power. Of screenshot hard-ons and mouth-watering cover-art. After dedicating thousands of hours to blissful bubbles of electronic interaction. Birthdays spent with a soul glued to an arcade cabinet that diligently earned my taken-for-granted allowance. To be denied access to an event for 15-years to which I was surely on equal footing -at least in terms of adulation, appreciation, and dedication- with only the most Elite amongst the elite attendees. There's no other event that compares with the amount of awe and longing I've had for E3. Due to several now-legendary benefactors, I finally got to go in 2010. Do you remember your first amazing Christmas? How bout that feeling you got after you got and 100% on a spelling test in 2nd grade and your parents put it on the fridge? Couple bucks under your pillow from the tooth fairy felt like mana from heaven? I mean, really pause after these questions, this is a real feeling. Finding a gotdamn Easter egg? Your first trip to Vegas? Winning your first bet in Vegas? Deplaning in a country you've never visited before? Cooking a meal for your girl that she loves and devours? Punching a bully in the stomach?!!? Savoring a perfectly cooked steak? Your illest foodgasm? Eating that extra salty potato chip? First trip to the zoo? Making out with a hot girl at a club? A girl buying you a drink? Peeing after holding it for 90-minutes? A roadtrip with the homies? A perfect Simpsons episode? Your first In-n-Out burger? Sitting down and Preparing for a new episode of the Cosby Show? Waking up for Saturday Morning Cartoons? When a DJ plays one of your favorite songs? Open bar at a good friend's weddding? Graduating from college? *censored due to YWD (Yelping while drunk)* DO YOU? Do you remember having the time of your fucking life? Well, good. I was just checking for comparison's sake. If you're a gamer E3 is like that. Just...better.

A gamer's dream come true. Very impressed with the extravagant layout and setups; I also had tons of fun playing a variety of demos as well as witnessing the passion and excitement of other gamers. The Nintendo section was by far my favorite! It was such an honor meeting Mario and Luigi...haha. One could easily spend a few hours to a full day here with the amount of exclusive content that was present. Definitely check this out at least once in your life if you haven't already!

Hilarious. Like being dropped into an episode of the Big Bang theory. Went for work but I'm not a gamer ... Loved the craziness

But Saturday was cool, Clover's grass was green, and the atmosphere was indeed festive. There were several options for free or metered parking in supervised lots within walking distance, making at least our vehicular arrival and departure quick and painless. After leaving the car, we made a beeline for the park's restrooms, where, as it typically happens whenever we step out to a fairground, we spent a considerable chunk of our visit waiting our turns in slow-moving lines. Plenty of music filled our ears while we waited, especially the notes coming from center stage, where a featured group, The Lions, sounded particularly captivating. We quietly joined standing watchers later on, just in time to see The Lions wrap up their soulful and energetic gig. Festival treats were also close at hand, so we couldn't miss tasting Linde's old-fashioned sugar roasted almonds. We followed our noses to her popular table where I impulsively grabbed us a couple of warm paper cones in a sweet twofer deal. Linde jokingly asked if we were unable to share, to which I honestly replied, "yes." It was a fair-tastic time. The usual apparel gifts and arts-and-craftsy things were available for passers-by to browse and purchase, and interactive activities engaged families, kids, and kids-at-heart. It seemed apparent to us after one walk-through that the city government was out to connect with and educate visitors in exchange for cheap swag and fun, with a number of public service kiosks that let you spin wheels and answer questions for prizes. We didn't get around to checking everything out (see Tess M.'s yelp here: http://bit.ly/11hmlqO for some neat things we missed), but all in all, the Festival was pleasant and low-key, which is pretty much Santa Monica in a nutshell.

When we entered at 6:30 (an hour early for VIP), the place was somehow already crowded?? Minutes later, it was hard to even walk inside the hangar. We were shoulder to shoulder with people. Luckily we got to sample most foods. The food selection was great. Plenty of wine tastings and other drink options. The issue was not the food. The problem was how incredibly crowded it was. Around 7:30 when it was time for the general admission entry, I thought there's no way they could fit anymore people in here. Then it became SO CROWDED that you literally could NOT WALK or get to anything! People were bumping into each other trying to get anywhere. It just became an extremely stressful experience trying to get to anything, so we just left. I just want to say shame on LA Food and Wine for overselling and cramming as many people in like a SARDINE CAN! This used to be a wonderful event and I was so excited to finally be able to attend again, only to be disappointed. THIS WAS A FIRE HAZARD! There's no way that many people in that hangar was safe in any way.

Tried great scallop, crab, pasta dishes and a tomato soup I really liked. Chocolate chip cookie was outstanding. Blood orange mule was pretty good by Lobos. Other dishes were so so. Definitely not worth the high price tag even after 30% discount.

For us, the only thing that made the event even slightly palatable is that we had the foresight to arrive more than half an hour early. By 11 o'clock, the lines were biblically long. After checking in, the first thing everyone had to do was go to the token booth (ONE token booth!) to either purchase tokens or redeem tokens that had already been purchased. For those of us redeeming tokens, due to a technical glitch, they initially had to manually look people up one at a time on a printed list of names. Because we were second in line, the delay for us was minimal. But more than an hour after the event had started, people were STILL waiting in line just to get their tokens. The theme of the day was long lines that didn't move. We purchased VIP tickets which, per the website, included skipping the lines. Guess what? That didn't happen. (BTW, two VIP tickets plus a modest number of tokens cost us well over $200.) Everyone, regardless of ticket level, waited in the same lines. I'm not exactly sure what we paid extra for. Oh yeah, a handful of picnic tables with umbrellas that we could sit at and a "free" welcome cocktail, if you had the patience to wait in that line. We did not. There's one factor I hadn't really thought of before the festival and this one is completely out of the control of the organizers. You have to ask yourself, "How many French fries can I actually eat?" We left after two orders. Potatoes be filling! If there is a second annual festival, there needs to be a complete operational overhaul. It really was disastrous. I can't be the only one who feels this way. It seems unlikely that anyone who attended the inaugural event will fall for it a second time. When you sell too many tickets to an event and then underdeliver, people talk. Be better.

With the pandemic still very much so at large, we are very limited to these types of experiences, but Insomniac was able to pull this off, while still keeping everyone safe. The only downfall (and quite big IMO), was the wait time to enter the first weekend. We waited over an hour to enter GA, and eventually was asked if we wanted to upgrade to VIP for $50. I wish we were asked this in the beginning, but I wonder if they've been able to fix this problem since then. Also, if anyone has attended this and knows the link to the official playlist on Spotify, please send it my way! I'd love to bookmark this entire playlist to listen in my car.

Yeah, it adds up and it doesn't seem worth it, but if there's 8 of you in the car and split the tab, it isn't too bad. We came through on a Friday night. We opted for the VIP package and bypassed pretty much everyone (that line looked like a thousand miles long, so that alone threw all regrets, doubts and second thoughts out the window!) Bypassing the long line was one thing, but then my passengers' bladders decided to go in sync and in unison all needed a bathroom break BEFORE the drive. The VIP package came in handy once again - they have a separate set of porta-potties for VIP peeps, too! Needless to say, there were no lines there either. So, yeah, off to a good start. I didn't really know what to expect, so I decided not to expect too much. There were a lot of mixed reviews on Yelp (complaints were mostly about the cost) so I kept an open mind. THE VERDICT: Totally WORTH IT. This whole production was well put-together. It was beautifully created with a lot of imagination. The engineering and construction alone were astonishing, how long did it take them to put it all up! And I really liked that they coordinated all the lights' movements with the music coming off the assigned radio station (107.9.) And those souls braving the cold as they entertained us with their dance moves... KUDOS! (I didn't get to see what's in the VIP box but going by how each of my passengers went through it like the Tasmanian Devil, I'm gonna assume whatever was in there was fun!) If this is your thing, here are a few tips: 1) Entry is at Holly and Huntington NOT at the main entrance. If you do end up at the main entrance, they'll reroute you. No worries. 2) You can come through as early as 30 minutes before your scheduled time, but try to be there within that window just for the sake of being considerate. The whole thing is about 45 minutes to an hour, all depending on how slow or fast you go. 3) CLEAN YOUR WINDSHIELDS! I meant to, but I completely forgot. But even with the semi-dirty glass, it was still pretty good. 4) Sunroofs are great! I didn't have one (wouldn't have mattered if I did since I was the one behind the wheel) but I was sorta jealous of the peeps who made full use of it. I imagine that's the best way to experience it. 5) You are allowed to open your windows. Just watch out for fog machines... 6) Take your time and let it all sink in. If you can afford it, I highly recommend it, something cool to do social distancing style. It's an event for all ages and a great excuse to get out of the house more especially during these challenging times.

Each year the founder and her team (yes HER) work to curate a wide variety of vendors with something for everyone. If you're shopping for a fathers day present or something for yourself you'll find all that and more. I cannot recommend coming enough. They have shows in Portland, DC, Phoenix and LA. The booths are run by the artists/sellers themselves which is a great way to connect with these super talented entrepreneurs. Hard to make the rounds without picking up a few items and supporting local artists at the same time, most of whom work out of their apartments. There are some foodie freebie samples and a freebie photo booth too. Meters all around downtown but as of this writing (5/23), self-parking in the building was a flat $8.
