We stopped in here along our route from petrified forest national park to Socorro NM. We had intended to order steaks but decided on different items mainly due to price once we saw the menu. They steaks were each about $35 per plate which isn't bad but more than we really wanted to spend. So our group ordered some different items from the menu and were happy with our choices! Eagle Ranch Cafe is the only spot for gas, groceries and a hot meal for miles around...literally the only game in town. You'd better like it, cause that's all you got! We are riding motorcycles cross country from Virginia and heading back after visiting the North and Sourh Rim of the Grand Canyon. We have met the nicest people along the way and the folks at the Eagle Ranch Cafe were no exception. The little store has just about anythimg you could need, from tools to shampoo to fresh ground beef, with all sorts of local memorable displayed throughout. There cafe menu is varied and the prices are easy. The waitress was friendly and efficient. We ordered bugers and topped our meal off with homemade pie. We've been here a few times passing through and it's typically really good food and service. However if you're ordering off the low carb menu, you have to say that exactly. All three of the items on that section of the menu are served with a salad, and are under the same name as some of the other sandwiches that they offer. My mom had ordered the southwest turkey, off the low carb menu, thinking that it would just come with a side salad, so she also ordered some of the soup of the day. Apparently she pointed to the low carb section on the menu while ordering, but didn't say it out loud. Idk, she probably messed up by not saying it. Anyways, when the waitress brought out the southwest turkey Sandwich, and not the low carb meal, mom realized that she'd accidentally ordered the wrong thing. Instead of saying "I didn't realize that you meant the low carb, I'm sorry," our waitress said "well that's not what you told me" and walked away to get our ticket. Then, she proceeded to say that it's not her job to ask if people wanted the low carb option or not, and that my mom should have told her in the first place. Only after realizing that she got a $2 tip, she finally said sorry and then began starting an ARGUMENT with my mother, who is a former waitress herself. In the end after my mom said have a great day, the waitress made a sarcastic comment about how great her day was going and we left. The food was good, aside from the overcooked burger that my dad had. But our waitress was incredibly rude, which is surprising for a little town like Datil. It has been some time since I visited Eagle Guest Ranch BUT I still rave about it! I was in Soccoro for training so some friends and I drove out to Datil for dinner. Who would have thought that one of the best steaks of my life would have come from a restaurant attached to a gas station. The service was great. The food was great. The location is in the middle of nowhere (according to this east coast girl). It really was rather remote! The gentleman who was working at the store was super friendly and gave me a tour of the walk in fridge where they had a ton of fresh beef! Moo. Totally worth a stop! If you aren't paying attention you will drive right by this gem in the middle of west central New Mexico. I first fell in love with this place 33 years ago working construction in the area. And after all these years, they are still offering some of the best home cooked food in the state. For breakfast we had the burritos: one red and one green. Traveling through the backroads, I happened upon this little town and stopped here for lunch. I had the Mexican cheeseburger. It's a large seasoned beef patty with cheese inside a tortilla and then covered with your choice of red or green sauce. It was really good! The restaurant is closed due to Covid but they have takeout. It's a neat little town. I got to meet some of the townspeople. The also have a gas station and inside there is a meat market and small grocery store. The owners are very nice. My food came out fast and prices are very reasonable. Looking around the store, it's perfect for campers who need supplies. They have everything. On my way out of town I saw a few campgrounds. Once Covid is over I'm coming back to camp. Yes - you should stop here! Don't let the gas station setting and the "don't blink your eyes or you'll miss it" setting fool you! This rustic restaurant alongside the highway between the VLA and Pie Town is essentially in the middle of nowhere but the food is a great deal for your dollar! This place also has a general store, deli rack and a butcher on site which may appeal to others in your party. This is a family business and you can feel the hospitality when you walk in. (Thank you!) The menu is deceivingly plain when you consider the decorated dishes that emerge from the kitchen. We had the Green Chile Cheeseburgers and they were super (just that after a traveling day and time at the VLA I could've eaten another burger). They are family friendly and have some nice Friday specials I believe must be made to draw in the hard-working local community. In Socorro for a class and was told about this place. Took the 1-hour drive out, and was not disappointed. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and very friendly. This place is certainly off the beaten path to say the least but worth the scenic drive out for a unbelievable deal in a great steak dinner. To go with the steak I had the hand battered onion rings which were in a beer batter crust and fried to a delicious golden brown. We came and took a drive out to Datil New Mexico. We stopped to eat at this restaurant to Traeger ribeye steaks which are cut to order. Sylvia had a cheeseburger with green chile. Eric had a combination plate with two enchiladas one chile relleno and a taco with rice and beans. The Chile was tasty both red and green. John wanted his steak well done and after the second time going back to the kitchen to be grilled more it still was not well done. I had my steak medium which was like medium rare but I didn't mind. A group of us have stayed at the Eagle Guest Ranch a few times this past year and always enjoy the food here. Personally, I have spent a lot of time all over SW New Mexico and this place has hands-down the best food in the region. Part of this success stems from the fact they use fresh meat in their burgers and steaks. Great green chile cheeseburgers and priced right if not surprisingly inexpensive. Their Western Omelet is spicy but great for breakfast. Fridays are Mexican night and recommend their giant plate sized burritos. Locals seem to be there all the time and are generally friendly as is the staff. A rare treat for anyone passing through that wants great food and good prices in a cozy atmosphere. Stopped by this place during my week stay in Socorro. The drive was nice and stopped at the Very Large Array prior to arriving at Eagles. Don't let the location fool you, yes it's a gas station, yes it's a mini mart but the steak was awesome. We were in a large party so it might have taken a little longer to get our food but that's what happens in a large group. I had the rib eye with bacon cooked at medium. It was cooked perfect for my preference. The steak didn't need any A1 sauce or anything else. It was seasoned and juicy. My side of fries were how fries are supposed to be. The mashed potatoes looked good also. Another person in my party had there's cooked to much and the waitress said they will cook another one for them. Not wanting to send it back she was adamant on cooking it the correct way. A new steak came back perfect. I would recommend the drive for anyone staying in Socorro or just passing by. One of the employees warned us about the elk when we were leaving, 8pm. There were a bunch of elk off the sides of the road. So be careful and enjoy the steak. read more

I have been coming to the Eagle Guest ranch since 1978. It is world renown for the chicken fried steak. Over the last few years, i come here everytime that i go to Socorro, usually two or three times a year. Great western cuisine and atmosphere. The steel folding chairs in the froont dining room might not be the best idea, but the chairs in the back are fine. Fireplace works in the winter a/c works in the summer. The restaurant is clean. I haven't stayed in the motel in almost 20 years so I can't comment. Full bar, (Remember that at this altitude, one drink does the work of two!) food is good. Staff is excellent. Most have been there forever and they are very professional. The same family has owned it forever, except for a short time when someone tried to buy it and they had to take it back. The general store is well stocked and they have gas pumps. If you are a VLA person, be sure to take some time off from your observing run to stop by. If you are spending some time in Socorro, it's worth the hour and change that it will take to get to the Eagle Guest Ranch. read more

Datil is a small town in Catron County, NM. 43 miles east from Quemado, NM, on Hwy 60. On the south west corner of Hwy 60 and State Road 12, is small restaurant and general store with the best steaks around. Backyard beef you can't beat. The beef cuts are same day harvest. You pick the cut you want and it is cooked to your satisfaction. Say hi to the local cowboys and hunters getting their big meal for the day. The drive was well worth it. Stopped here when camping at Dalit Wells BLM campground. Saw all the great reviews and decided to go for lunch. Very friendly BUT sorry to say the food didn't live up to our expectations. I had a cheeseburger, fries and a side order of onion rings. And a margarita. It tasted good but wondered if it had any booze in it. They say they grind the hamburger fresh each morning but the burger I had was dry and overcooked. Didn't come close to even a McDonald's quarter pounder, now that McDonald's is using fresh beef. The crinkle fries and onion rings were like just off the truck from Sysco. You would think a so-called upper star restaurant would make their fries and onion rings from scratch. They have Friday Mexican food day and we decided not to go back for that. Worried that would come off a Sysco truck also.
