My wife and I are heading up next weekend for our honeymoon. Well, turns out I ordered online and had the wrong date which was totally my fault. I received a really nice "we look forward to seeing to you tonight" email this past Saturday just to realize I had the wrong day. Within minutes of receiving the email I called, emailed and called again to get someone on the phone to talk to. I did receive a call back on Saturday within an hour (guess they get the obligatory 1 star for that). They left a message saying I was out of luck, but if I am in town next weekend they have available shows that I can pay for and see. Booh! Well, I just gave you $65 for free. Why do you want to take my money, then take more for me to see a show? I don't think so. The offer was in poor taste.

Most of the crowd around us were not there for a concert they were there to party. No consideration for others around them. Talking loudly and having a good time. Unaware of how their behavior was spoiling the concert for others. Not a good experience if you're looking for a concert; great if you want to hang out and party but you could do that in a honky tonk.

All lawn viewing are Free, including rehearsals and day/night of. The sound system is great outdoors as it is inside. So take a picnic lunch, some wine, a blanket and join all the locals on the grass. You won't be disappointed. Unless it rains, but if it does take a quick walk over to The Aspen Meadows Resort. Sit down at Plato's and undiscovered and under rated restaurant in Aspen. By far one of the best menus for 100 miles or more!

There was a wonderful mix of families, older and younger people, and everyone was having a great time. There is plenty of room to spread out so you don't feel "oppressed" by the crowd (as I often do!) If you purchase the party pass, which is $45 for the day, you get a beer sampling cup (samples are FREE during the 2.5 hour tasting) and 5 tickets to sample chili. It really is a great deal. They also held the festival this year higher up the mountain in a more steep area, so it was like natural theater seating - everyone had a great view of the bands. This is a must-do if you live in the area.

The International Chili Society holds its two chili competitions and tastings in Snowmass at the same time that almost 80 microbrewers from all over the country - actually out of the country too, Euro brewers were featured including Paulaner and their yummy strawberry Fruli - have two brew sampling sessions. For around $30 per day, you get a number of tiny sample chili cups, and though they look small, we couldn't even finish them all either of the days. And let me tell you, we tried HARD. There was so much amazing chili and even more fun were the booths that had fun toppers or sides like cilantro sour cream, sliced hot peppers, other veggie garnishes, a variety of cheeses and even cheesy Texas toast in the shape of the state. Personalities were large and all over the map. Also included are sample glasses with which to do damage in the plentiful beer tents. My only gripe was that the beer sampling was limited to just a couple hours each day - not the length of the entire festival, and it ended before the headliners even started. You could buy beer then, but no longer sample. Bummer! It was so fun to wander up and down the ski hill sampling beers like Ghostface Killah and many others, and then ambling over to the mall at Snowmass Village to plow through the maze of chili tents entered into the cook-off. Green chile, white chili, chili with bourbon, chocolate, Guinness, brown sugar, elk, bison, veal, venison, beef, tofu, bacon, sweet potato, garbanzo beans, pickled jalapenos, smoked jalapenos...it went on and on. Many were actually veggie or vegan which was cool. To sweeten the deal, there is a stage in the middle of all this excitement with bands and DJs throughout the afternoon and a couple bigger names each night (BoomBox and Tedeschi Trucks while we were there). And looking down at the stage, you see the most incredible view down the mountain. It was so convenient to be able to have a hotel room literally steps from this event where we could tend to our traveling pups. People played games all day like corn hole, washers, etc... It was a small event, local, full of delicious food and beer at a super affordable price. Kid friendly too.

I went to the Rodeo this past Wednesday night, and it was a great time! For $20, you get to watch…read morea 1.5 hour long show. I've only ever been to one other rodeo, and it was in Pennsylvania. It was much longer, and I wish this one would have been 2.5 hours. I really enjoyed the show. We came as a decent-sized group, and it is a bit challenging to get seating as a group. Be prepared to split up a bit. Our group's ages ranged from an eight year old to a retiree. Everyone had a good time. There are many kids activities if you have children! The actual rodeo has the events you would suspect, like bull riding, horse races, and bucking-bronco riding. However, my favorite event is the mutton bustin'. Nine kids, ages 4-7 are chosen to ride on the top of a sheep until they fall off. The kids get trampled by the sheep, and while it shouldn't be funny, it is mildly hysterical. There is also a mechanical bull for kids and adults to ride. This Rodeo has a BBQ and alcohol tent where you can get all sorts of things to eat and drink. I didn't get anything, but the prices were pretty typical for Aspen/Snowmass. This is definitely a fun thing to do on a summer night, and the Rodeo should not be missed.

The extra star beyond the bare minimum is for past experiences only and not today's. I stopped by today with my four-year-old daughter, after buying her a couple clubs at Replay Sports in Aspen. She was really excited to hit a few balls on the range. Evidently the club is now members only which changed last year without any sort of publicizing on their part. I asked if she could hit a few balls on the range and took out my credit card to buy a bucket. The range was almost empty and it was 2 PM on Wednesday. But we were turned away because we aren't members. My four year old was very disappointed. For them to not let her hit a few balls on a mostly empty range was pretty ridiculous. I will not be giving them my business anymore.

Our greeter/docent, Jane was a walking encyclopedia of fun facts and interesting stories about Aspen. It was easy to visualize Aspen's growth and how it evolved from humble beginnings as a poor mining town to the Aspen we all know as the place that only the very rich can afford to ski and play and live.
