Alright, everything but the wine, really. So glad to see a shop like this hasn't taken being wine-centric as key to success. The beer selection has about tripled between when I first visited in December and when I popped in during a shop at Broadway Saturday market in February. The Wild Beer Co. they carry have been delicious so far as well as the Kernel and Chocolate Beers. There are also a few taps to try from there in the shop. The place itself is pleasantly arranged for browsing of the selection and feels nicely designed around the central table. Beer on the right, wine on the left. Great location right on Broadway Market, across from a fine drinking establishment (The Dove) and close to Bethnal Green. Staff have been absolutely friendly and happy to chat on both of my visits. A little birdie told me that in addition to their Wednesday wine tastings, there should be beer tastings some time in the future. Noble, I hope so!

The beer on tap that they allow you to taste and then buy for 3£ in half litre bottles is not something I have seen in this kind of establishment before. Really really good and luckily they had a tasty beer like Siren White Tips available for us to take home. It was delicious. That is not all as they have a small selection of bottled beer to choose from too, although it is a range that will be extremely familiar to you if you spend half as much time perusing London beer shops as I do.

I attended my tasting on a Wednesday afternoon. This particular tasting was a BYOB (bring your own baby)! It was an awesome opportunity for moms to get together with their babies, de stress from motherhood over a couple glasses of wine. I however, did not have a baby (as I was solo traveling) and was welcomed widely by the staff and all the moms. I even got to hold a few babies lol. This tasting was extremely affordable we were offered 4 wines throughout the 3 hours as well as small bites for £25 . The staff were extremely extremely knowledgeable and true experts at their craft. They talked extensively about the wines, their origin, ways to pair, fermentation and more! Their passion really allowed for a good experience. I've only been in there once but the wine they recommended for our pasta was rich and the perfect compliment. The staff (I've only met one but she talks very personally and highly of the owner too) really know their wine and are proper extroverts. They'll recite a novel for you on their wine selection so you can find exactly what you're looking for. They really pride themselves on vintage wines. They have done a great job of networking with and seeking out very unique, kind of "indie" wines. One of the coolest things about this shop, and something I have yet to experience, are their wine tasting events. Occasionally they will invite a wine maker to promote his wine and offer free tasting. It is a smart looking shop with air of elegance about it. Go in a sit in one of the leather sofa's, there is a flickering fire that has been programmed onto a TV (cheesy? - no it adds to the ambience). Carefully selected wines are stocked in racks and you have the chance to speak to one of the wine experts about what you like or are looking for and they will bring you various bottles to try before you buy. Prices from £5 upwards, I think that they will find something for everyone and it doesn't need to be expensive which is exactly what I thought it would be. The PG shop in Battersea has a fantastic vibe- the staff are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about wines. Oftentimes they may not be able to devote much time to any one customer as the shop tends to be very busy with lots of customers coming in. I've noted that many are returning customers. The revamp looks good and they have expanded their range of offerings. Wine buying isn't simply about buying a commodity - it's an information journey and forming an understanding about the customers wishes. I love their extensive range and they have some really excellent wines. The New World is well represented in addition to the established classic regions of Europe. Yes, there are some expensive wines, but that's a fact for everyone who wants to buy top class burgundy for example.

Philglas & Swiggot feels to me a lot like a wine shop from a bygone era. Given that the vast majority of the bottles are in the £20 plus bracket this is more than a bit frustrating as, if you are going to spend this amount of money on wine, you want to be very confident that your selection is going to be to your liking. Other wine shops solve this problem by either making the wine available to taste (step forward The Sampler and Vagabond) or with engaging customer service (Highbury Vintners, I salute you). To top it off, the wine is sold at top whack prices. For example, Philglas sells Chateau Musar's current vintage at £23.15. This is more expensive than Berry Bros (whose prices are not cheap by any means) and far more expensive than Majestic who currently sell it for £17.99. While I appreciate independent wine merchant's need to make a bigger profit margin than Majestic it is almost 30% more expensive to buy your wine at Philglas without any recompense of the kind mentioned above.

Open since 2003, Lancelots is the go-to boutique for wine lovers who want to pick up their favourite choice, or browse for new discoveries. When this place opened, I didn't know that much about wine - but I decided that the owners were going to become my tutors (lucky them!) I quickly learnt the intricacies of a fine wine - and that a good wine does not necessarily equal an expensive one. When I go round to friends houses for dinner, they tell me what they are cooking, and I go into Lancelots always with a budget of under £10 and get them to help me pair a wine with say, coq au vin (Chianti or Multipulchano) fettuccine with mushrooms (Californian Chardonnay) or a Thai curry (French Sauvignon Blanc). Always one for free alcohol, I love that they have monthly wine tastings. Usually these are on the last Saturday of every month. I'm even happier when they occasionally merge these with cheese tastings. These evenings are always fun and informative. I once found a sparkling rose which was made with freshly crushed strawberries. Trust me, it was the nectar of the Gods! This is also a good place to order in wine, however obscure the label. Case in point; after experiencing the best meal, and wine of my life in a little town called Cortona in Tuscany, I wrote down the label of the wine that I had drunk, turns out it was a locally produced syrah. I took the description to Lancelots and a few weeks later, I came back in and picked up a case of the same wine which they had kindly tracked down for me. Lucky us for having this place
