Early Edition is a pretty great breakfast spot just south of downtown Manhattan, KS. They serve up a large variety of traditional diner style breakfast and lunch foods, all of which are tasty! The pancakes are solid and the coffee is good. Portions are large, so you will not leave hungry. It does get very busy, so expect to wait if you're going on a weekend morning. That said, Early Edition is definitely worth visiting! read more

I was at the Candlewood EE and was very unhappy with the customer service. I arrived by myself -- a senior citizen -- and waited to be seated. And waited. And waited. After several minutes, three people walked in behind me and a young woman immediately addressed their presence and sat them. I said to her, "Please seat me next." She was very indifferent and said nothing. She finally sat me. My waitress was lovely. Took my order. When my food was ready, the aforementioned rude young woman brought out my food and slid the plate in front of me. I said," Thank you." She walked away and said nothing. Nobody wore a nameplate so I don't know any names. My waitress was super-friendly and I tipped her 30 percent. But I doubt I will ever go back to EE. read more

I ordered a skillet with over medium eggs, not the first time asking for it in a restaurant, I was served over easy eggs instead, the avocado was already oxidized and a little dried, obviously not fresh, the tomatoes were tart and too soft, again not fresh! The first time I went to Early Edition was about one year and I enjoyed my experience, however it was also the EE on the west side. While in a nice location and a nice building with a reasonably sized dining room, the Ft Riley location fails to deliver. For the price this breakfast restaurant should be better than it is. The service was slacking from the time I entered the door. It took them a couple of minutes to seat us and then another 8 minutes just for the server to say Hi (while not busy). During these 8 minutes I was tinkering with the silverware and mugs on the table. The first coffee mug I grabbed was dirty, very noticeably so if one looked inside, the second mug was clean. I ordered the Colonel Skillet and was sadly disappointed. Not only was the skillet not hot, but the poached eggs I ordered were improperly cooked. I mentioned it to the waitress, but since I was short on time I didn't ask for new eggs and just had to make do. The Skillet was very unseasoned and tasted rather bland. As a result of my experience, it saddens me that a local establishment can't deliver a better breakfast than Denny's or Ihop. read more

I've eaten here for several years. In the past month I've had two inedible meals. The first was bland poached egg with hollandaise on English muffin. No flavor. Today the food was too salty, eggs swimming in oil, toast never arrived, inattentive server. In half an hour both my husband and I were suffering digestion upset. I went to Early Edition yesterday morning for brunch with a big group of 11 people. They don't do reservations but the group which was there was seated quickly with the stragglers coming in a bit later. Service was very good and with 11 ppl the food came out all around the same time! I had a chocolate chip pancake, scrambled eggs and bacon. The pancake was huge which was great and the chocolate chips were inside the pancake instead of being sprinkled on top like some places do which was a big plus for me. So i normally don't do this whole review thing, but after my experience here i felt like i needed to. Food was delicious, however the staff was extremely unpleasant. Our server was extremely forgetful, we had to remind her to bring us water and condiments several times. Once the meal was finally over, we went up front to pay and have our check split. The male cashier was EXTREMELY disrespectful. His whole aura was one of a person who really hates their job. His body language really just said it all. The way he spoke was as if he didnt have a fucking soul. I did not leave a tip due to this young man, i will never go back to this place. It seems like they hire inexperienced people with no sort of customer service skills whatsoever. Drive a few extra miles to a different restaurant, unless you enjoy terrible service. read more

Fyi... not open...in 5 months no one seemingly reported this? The one on Fort Riley Blvd was also not open... a Sunday at around 9:45am. Update: so apparently this breakfast focused place (as implied by the name) is not open on Sundays...that's a bit mind boggling. I did manage to eat at the Fort Riley location...so here's the review of the food and service. They don't have a sign saying anything about "please wait to be seated" so I stood there for a bit. The waitress doubling as a hostess was quick to see me and sat me. I ordered the Potato Eggs Benedict and some coffee. They were quick with the service and the eggs benedict was properly cooked (I've had many where it's more like a hard boiled egg). Though I do believe the potato eggs benedict was suppose to come with avocado. What I received, without verifying it with the menu again, was the plain eggs benedict. The hollandaise was bland. .. everything tasted better once I doused pepper on it all. The potatoes were previously frozen french fry cubes, as I've been starting to call them since this seems to be all that exists in Manhattan. Just once I'd like real potatoes that are cooked in a skillet...the frozen things are what I'd expect from a hotel. The coffee tasted strangely close to Folgers instant coffee or Nescafe instant. While it's not a horrible taste, it definitely is different from a nice cup of freshly ground coffee. It's a diner so my expectations were already low for the coffee. Overall, I guess the place does the trick of filling my stomach, but no more than Denny's would. Though it's a local place, it falls short of standing out. read more

Doesn't look like much when you walk past, but I was practically dying of hunger so I popped in. The definition if a hole-in-the-wall. I got the colonel skillet, sub'd w/ gravy and wow... there are no words. A classic skillet done right. Crisp english muffin, fluffy scrambled eggs, stacked with all the essentials (ham, potatoes, peppers, and cheese). There's about a million options available between the menu board and daily specials, so it can get a little overwhelming, but you really can't go wrong. This is a regular breakfast spot for me and my college friends. Finish a run or workout and come here to fill ourselves up on the weekends. I usually get a couple pancakes. They are big and fillings and taste sweet. I've gotten the usual as well and it is delicious too. The biscuits and gravy aren't too special, one time they were actually rather bland. All in all it is a well run business, far better than ihop, and less expensive and busy then the chef with just as good of food. We stayed at the Hampton inn next door. We walked over to eat on a Saturday morning. I ordered the Cajun Skillet and blueberry pancakes. My wife ordered the Cat backer skillet. Really really good food. The sausage was amazing. Coffee hot and they left a full pot so I did not run out. The pancakes were huge with real fresh blueberries. If we come back to Manhattan again, we will Definitely eat here again. read more

It was. Ok. We had 15 minute wait which was fine since they were super packed. We got in and the server seemed very busy but she did pretty well. The coffee was weird. It was like a hazelnut coffee that was served just under hot so not sure about that. The breakfast burrito I ordered without sour cream came with sour cream. Not a big issue. The burrito itself was soggy and pretty bland in flavor. Country potatoes were bland and out of a frozen bag you can pick up down the street at HyVee. Ok I hate to do this but our experience was so bad I have to. Visited for Sunday breakfast yesterday because The Chef was packed and had a 45 minute wait. Walked to Early Edition with a group of 8 and to make things easier we split into two groups of four. Was told 20 to 30 minutes but seated in 15 - so far, so good. Immediately brought water and coffee and servers introduced themselves. The male seemed to know what he was doing and the female was five days on the job. At this point, what I am about to say I think has little fault of her - I think the majority of the problem lies in the kitchen and management. Table 1 receives food in respectable and expected time. Table 2 (us) expects food 5 to 10 minutes later as that is how long we ordered after table 1. 10 minutes goes by...15 minutes...20 minutes...at 30 minutes male server comes over and tells us food will be right out. Female server follows up 5 minutes later and says the same thing. More minutes goes by, I am starting to lose track. Eventually manager comes over and apologizes saying order was lost and they are placing the order now. I give her my trademark stare and she offers to take 50% off the meal. One hour after order was placed food arrives with little fanfare or apology. As it turns out the food was actually pretty good but the wait ruined it all. To add insult to injury table 1 has to wait 15 to 20 minutes for male server to cash them out. And I think the 50% off was insulting too; after an hour would you not comp the entire meal? I make a trip back to Kansas about every two years to visit friends and relatives (native of southeast Kansas who graduated from Kansas State University). Absolutely love eating at Early Edition!! Best eggs Benedict and eggs Florentine I've ever had! My kids love the waffles and pancakes. Wife always gets a great breakfast! We all love the food and comfortable setting. Have met friends here for breakfast on two visits and were allowed to linger and chat without getting rushed out (unlike some of the chain restaurants!) This is always a high point of my visit to K-State and Manhattan. Plus, there is a Phillips 66 gas station on the same plaza, so it's a convenient place for travelers! However today I was seated and waited 20 minutes for a server to come to the table and take our drink order. No server or manager ever came to the table so my party ended up getting up and leaving. Early edition is great! I love it but I just hate how a bunch of high school students are in charge of everything they need much adult guidance. There system is very unorganized. My experience today was very unpleasant, they sat a a group of 15 in 3 separate groups one table with 3 people and 2 booths one with 5 people and the other with 7... if they would of been upfront and patient with us we would have waited as long as possible to sit all in the same table.. The food was average at best. A friend got a crepe and the fruit looked like it had gone bad. The food was quick to come out but again they brought a dish to our table that we didn't order. Not familiar with Manhattan but wanted to take our son out for brunch while we were in town visiting. Knew going on a Sunday at 11a could be quite interesting. Only had about a 20min wait though! Seating was comfortable and not cramped. Server was SUPER attentive but not annoyingly so. Food came out quickly and we were all amazed! Hubs got the biscuits and gravy - the special and his fav, two thumbs up. Son got the steak and eggs - for a $14 steak I was a little nervous, but it was a decent portion and well cooked! I had the potato egg Benedict. When they say slab of ham it's a thick hunk! Came with avocado which was maybe a little overripe & kind of brown, but as an avocado lover I know how fickle those little suckers are. They were bitter or odd tasting at all though, which makes me think they have good quality control tasting these things. Overall definitely will be our breakfast place when we visit! read more

We had a party of eight. Our drinks were served intermittently over period of time rather than at one time. After a few minutes the waitress came back and ask if there was anything else. We said yes, how about taking our order-she had forgotten to take our order. Our meals were served in two stages about 10 minutes apart rather than at one period. We told the waitress one meal was missing. After about fifteen minutes I ask another waitress to check on the meal. She said she would advise our waitress. After a few more minutes, the last meal was served when everyone else in our Mother's Day party was finished eating. The last meal was called "the Usual, just bacon, eggs and toast. The eggs were requested to be were cooked hard boiled but were light, so the went back again. Through all of the delays and mistakes, the waitress was not apologetic. All the basic components for a diner are here, but unfortunately it's as if the proprietors have decided that the basic components are sufficient. There's really nothing special about the food, and frankly the service is fairly poor. I always try a place a few times before I write a review, and do this is based upon more than one experience. The first time we went, at least 4 employees were sitting in a booth stocking supplies while our service was fairly slow. That, to me, is unacceptable. Obviously you have to stock, but perhaps out front with the customers during business hours isn't the right time or place. Nor is it reasonable to dedicate that many people to refilling salt shakers while your customers are waiting 10 minutes for coffee. More recently, our hostess dropped a stack of menus on the floor, in the middle of the walkway. Her response (audibly) was "whatever, it doesn't matter." Unfortunately, it does matter. It's not like someone insulted us, but things like this are the difference between a great restaurant that I want to frequent, and a mediocre diner that has the basics. Frankly, this place is an overflow from The Chef. We come when we don't want to wait in line at The Chef, and when it's been long enough that we have forgotten what kind of place this is. But it would take so little effort to be as good or better than The Chef, that it's frustrating even for me - and I have no vested interest in the place. Just a little bit more effort in the sausage gravy - you know, cooking the flour for another 45 seconds so that it tastes wonderful instead of like, well, flour. Adding maybe another $2 worth of actual sausage...not serving a breakfast burrito chock full of fried potatoes with a side of fried potatoes, teaching your cooks how to make a sunny-side-up egg (it shouldn't be half raw)...little things that could make this restaurant, with its better location and larger space, a great place.
