Amanda is warm, kind, thoughtful, and intelligent--everything you'd want keeping you safe and cozy for one of the most powerful times in your life. Amanda has a way of keeping it calm, cool and collected while also being real about what she's thinking, where things are going, and reassuring all along the way. She made our day everything we'd hoped while also allowing us to lead the way. Amanda and Jeanie work as a close team and we genuinely enjoyed spending the Labor Day with them. They are forever warm in our hearts.

Jeannie and Amanda are amazing. From my first communication via email and phone calls to learn more about what to expect with a home-birth, to prenatal visits, to the big day, to incredible postpartum care - I felt supported, heard, encouraged, respected, and loved by this team. They are professional, experienced, and kind in their communication and were an absolute joy to work with. Pregnancy and birth can present so many different twists and turns and Jeannie and Amanda have the wisdom and humor to meet each moment with curiosity and creative solutions. They will forever hold a very special place in my heart and I highly recommend their services to anyone looking for a family centered pregnancy and birthing experience.

We love our midwives! From our first appointment in January to our last appointment today, Jeannie and Amanda have cared for our family with love, compassion and a level of patient care that is unparalleled by the traditional healthcare system. When the shelter in place was ordered and in subsequent months, they didn't skip a beat and provided care virtually as well as in person with proper precautions. Each appointment was an hour long over the last eight months- at home and in their office. And in between visits? My husband and I could call or text with any concerns. I had a google free pregnancy because these women educated me all along the way. I would almost call it stress free in that way, except of course I had preeclampsia and was admitted to the hospital at 35 weeks. But again, these women are the reason that this was caught. I only had a slightly elevated BP, but they know me so well that they didn't dismiss it and ultimately led to the best care decision for me and our baby. While in the hospital they were on call for us via FaceTime too, so we were never truly alone. Our postpartum care continued to be incredible. My first week home, when I had edema, elevated BP's and a hematoma in my uterus, these women stayed in contact with the doctors that were in charge of my care at the hospital and caught the need for a second opinion. They advocated for my care and encouraged me to do the same. As I transfer to routine OB care, I'm sure I'll have a good provider but I will miss the care that these women have provided for me, my husband and our baby. The truly somber feeling is that we are privileged to have had this care. Many women in the United States die from complications in pregnancy and most simply see whatever OB is available for 15 minute appointments during pregnancy and beyond. There is so much room for improvement in our healthcare system and especially in maternal/fetal medicine.

Right after our little one was born in the kitchen in front of our laundry machine (it went much quicker than we'd expected!)

I always feel like shouting Jeannie and Amanda's praises from the literal rooftops. I'm a birth & postpartum doula so my standards were quite high as I interviewed different homebirth midwives. Jeannie and Amanda's combination of expertise, warmth, and just being such genuine and down-to-earth people make them a truly incredible team. On the medical side of things, they're the best. They have so much experience and I could tell they're actively staying up to date on the newest evidence and technology (in my experience, not all care providers do this). And as far as how cared-for I felt, both Jeannie and Amanda were always so communicative and on top of the logistics of what I'd need to prepare for the birth, when my appointments were, etc., while always making me feel like I was the only client they had. Basically they were extremely on top of things but never in a way that made me feel like "just another client." I could tell they really cared about me, my partner, and our family. Every prenatal visit left me feeling completely heard, understood, and like I was in expert and loving hands. During my (very fast) birth, they anticipated my needs before I could think of them. They also easily balanced their support with the support I was receiving from my partner and doula. Same with postpartum: their support was nothing short of amazing, especially as Jeannie (who's an IBCLC! Amazing!) helped me with early chestfeeding challenges and both Jeannie and Amanda checked in on me every couple days. I really, really love these two-- as midwives and as people. If they end up supporting you in your pregnancy and birth, you are very, very lucky.

Outstanding, dependable, caring, scientific midwives! I will attempt to give a review from the perspective of the support partner rather than the birthing partner. Especially as a first time father, I felt scared to always be 'behind' or less 'knowledgeable', than my wife who had already read every book on birth. So in the visits before the labour I was expecting them to the quick and not understand much of what was happening - but the reality was quite different. Our visits, not like being in a hospital were never rushed, at times I was surprised by how they could just seem like chats. And although jargon and biological processes and acronyms arose in conversation, I never felt rushed or judged by EB midwives who always gave a thoughtful explanation. EB midwives are also very good at handling the mood and psychology during the labour, which I think is really perfectly illustrated by a moment I remember. It was more than half-way through the night and approaching 24 hours of contractions. Up to this point even though Amanda was monitoring the cervical dilation, she hadn't told us the number. My internal analogy was telling me that this was like a long flight, and it only get's longer if you look at the flight map every 5 minutes. But getting frustrated with her perceived lack of progress my wife asked to know how many centimeters she was dilated. What Amanda did then I thought was really skillful, she responded by asking what difference it would make to my wife. Even though the logic I thought was really obvious we went through it out-loud: if it was high that would be 'good', and if it was low that would be 'bad'. Having spoken this out-loud we realised it wasn't going to be helpful to know, and decided to keep going on with the labour, and stay in the moment. A few minutes later the labour shifted to a new phase, and we were past that difficult junction. Our baby was born very healthily, and but we never knew 'numerically' where we were in the labour, we were encouraged to feel it. (I'll repeat though that our midwives were measuring regularly, and using standard procedure.) Perhaps this is like going by feel rather than thinking that the birth is loading progress bar on a computer. I credit EB midwives for putting us in this mindspace. A lot of midwives really eat/breathe/sleep their work and EB midwives are no exception. They took care of us and held us through our birth superbly. Anybody who's wanting a homebirth midwife can't go wrong with t

Where to even begin with the extensive list of reasons Amanda and Jeannie (A&J) of East Bay Midwives are the absolute best set of birth professionals you could ask for?! Firstly, before we had even decided who would be working with for our prenatal care, A&J spent over an hour on the phone with us answering my long list of questions during the consultation. They provided us extensive details about their philosophy, care, appointment cadence, priorities, COVID precautions, and more. They also provided access to the insurance expert on their team who helped us navigate our needs before we even got started with prenatal care! A&J's helpful, knowledgeable, kind, evidence-based, and empathetic approach was an obvious perfect fit for us (plus the SIX WEEKS of in-home postpartum care they offer was an added bonus!). Unfortunately, before we began care with them, we lost our first baby. A&J were there every step of the way with texts, phone calls, and medical insight to help us navigate the process and work through our grief. They continued to check on us even months after our experience, reassuring us that "we are always your midwives" so we knew we could count on them to be part of our support circle. When I became pregnant a second time, it was even more important to me to have medical professionals on our team that would provide gentle, trauma-informed care for my husband and me. Because my subsequent pregnancy was such a delicate experience, I cannot imagine going through it without the empathetic, informed, and calming approach A&J provided. They were open to any and all needs and reassurance I required to make my second pregnancy experience as enjoyable as possible. During a majority of our appointments, we spent almost TWO HOURS with A&J going through my health, our baby's health, and walking through the long list of questions we brought with us. A&J always prioritized our family's physical AND mental health. So, not only was our time with them spent on necessary medical check ins, but A&J patiently spent time with much needed mental health check ins for both my husband and me - to make sure we were supported in all aspects of our experience. In between appointments A&J were both always available via text, phone, FaceTime and email to answer any question we had along the way. As we approached our birth-day, A&J came to our home and spent another two hours with us for a Birth Team Meeting. We reviewed our family's ideal vision for our baby's arrival and talked through our options should anything arise that required additional medical attention. A&J reassured us that their number one priority is always the health and safety of mom and baby. Knowing we had two experienced and knowledgeable midwives that had our backs made everything feel so much less scary. Our birth-day with A&J at our home was incredible. Not only did they provide us the medical expertise and support we needed, they also empowered me to trust in the power of my own body to bring our baby earth side. Once they caught our little one, they provided both him and me the medical care we needed (and the skin to skin I requested) before helping me shower, cleaning up our home, and staying for hours to assist in my first breastfeeding experiences. They then came back to our home the next day and twice more that same week to make sure everything was going smoothly. I was SO thankful to not have to leave our home as I recovered. A&J again spent hours with us and our baby in the following weeks checking in on our physical and mental health, guiding us with their medical expertise, and providing all the support we needed in those early days. As we reflect back on our time with A&J, my husband continues to comment on how working with East Bay Midwives was the absolute best thing for our family. He knew, because of our previous experience losing a child, we would need extra TLC from our medical team every step of the way. The empathy, informed guidance, kindness, and added benefit of the emotional care A&J provided made our pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience unforgettable (in the best way). PLEASE do yourself and your family a favor and get in touch with Amanda and Jeannie from East Bay Midwives for your birthing experience. You will be so glad you did!

She was very easy to talk to and had an easygoing demeanor, but spoke with a lot of authority and clearly had deep knowledge of pregnancy, birth and postpartum care. It made both of us feel confident enough to move forward with a home birth. Throughout my pregnancy, Grace provided excellent and thorough care. She would explain any decisions that came up (like what tests I was taking, various parts of the birth plan, etc) and offer nonjudgmental advice where needed. For the actual delivery, Grace was a hero and saw us through as best as we possibly could have asked for. She was very careful to explain things in great detail so we wouldn't feel stressed - "coughing is totally normal, he's clearing out his lungs", or "that color is totally normal until he gets some oxygen!". Finally, the postpartum care was above and beyond what I could have hoped. She came to us in the comfort of our home, was available by text for any little questions we had, and was a constant source of assurance for us as new parents and someone who had recently given birth. The whole time we worked with her, we felt like we were in very capable hands and well cared for as individuals and as new parents. I was open to medication for my labor but ended up going natural, no meds with Susi's guidance, coaching, and pain relief with counter pressure. After being bruised from our IVF journey I kind of gave up on my natural birth dream. What an empowering gift Susi gave me. When I look back at the pregnancy and birth experience, I really don't know how we would have managed without her. We are so grateful for her care during birth. A bit of background: I considered a homebirth but ultimately planned a hospital birth with midwives at Kaiser. I was pretty nervous and bummed to be in a hospital setting and really wanted to have an unmedicated birth. At our first consultation, Susi immediately put me at ease. She really understood my concerns about being at a hospital. She was incredibly comforting but also practical and honest about what to expect. This unique mixture gave me a lot of confidence that she could help me navigate the hospital system while also supporting me emotionally. Her prenatal visits were informative and reassuring, particularly for my partner. We also contacted her several times before birth for resources, recommendations, and support when we were nervous about something. I ended up being induced at 39 weeks for gestational hypertension. She was very comforting over the phone and was in contact through out the beginning of the induction process. Once I started Pitocin, she actually drove over before we asked her to since it was a long drive. I am so grateful that she did! She arrived when the contractions were really intense and I was already at 8cm. She walked in the room put her thumb to my forehead and I immediately relaxed. I went from feeling like I was being dragged behind each contraction to feeling like I was riding the wave. The way she talked me through contractions was absolutely incredible. My only coherent sentences during this time were "Susi, I like you so much. I'm so glad you're here." She was also amazing at interfacing with the hospital staff. When the midwife and team arrived to deliver, she pulled the midwife aside to make sure she knew about my birth preferences and reminded the nurses that I wanted no cheering when they forgot. During our postpartum meeting, the midwife told me that Susi was a great doula to work with and asked for her name to recommend to other patients. I am so grateful to Susi. Her care created such a positive birth experience for us! (This is posted from my husband's yelp account).

Even though I had had two prior breastfeeding journeys, they both had their complications/challenges and I knew I wanted to have some support on-hand before my 3rd baby. Having a private, in-home lactation consultant was nothing short of amazing. Ellen even did a prenatal visit where she learned about my past breastfeeding experiences and challenges and listened to my goals and worries for this time around. In the past, I had only ever seen LC's in a "hospital outpatient" relationship and while those providers were experienced and competent, the setup really lacked continuity of care that I think is really important in a breastfeeding journey. Ellen did wonders to soothe my instinct to pathologize every little thing, and also brought me up to speed on the new evidence-based guidance for flange sizes and mastitis/clogged duct protocol as a lot had changed from my 1st two babies. She helped me ID a tongue tie much earlier than my 2nd baby, and with her updated protocol recommendations, I can now say I have made it 6 months EBF with no mastitis (something that was not the case at ALL my 1st two times). I really enjoyed working with Ellen and always looked forward to her visits. Even though it was my 3rd baby, I know that I would not be having such a positive breastfeeding journey if not for Ellen. She helped remove a lot of the anxieties and frustrations I had. Learning how to do "laid back" breastfeeding from the comfort of my own bed/couch was an absolute game changer and my baby breastfed with Ellen's support has had much better head/neck strength from the get-go from her nursing position. My body has been so much less sore/worn down from this position too. I wish I had discovered it years ago! If you are looking for lactation support - please consider working with Ellen beginning from late 3rd trimester - having that continuity of care from the first few days home from the hospital was an incredible gift. I can't recommend her enough from my experience!

My biggest fears were my low pain tolerance and lack of control over knowing exactly how it would go. Shortly before our due date, Keelia came over to review our birth plan and a timeline of what to expect for pre-labor, active labor, travel to the birth center, transition, and delivery. She made sure we practiced comfort measures, breathing and how I wanted to be supported verbally. It wasn't until the last moments with Keelia where she looked me in the eye and said I was ready, that I actually felt prepared to go into labor and meet my daughter. 2 days later, my water broke in the middle of the night. For the next 44 hours of contractions, naps, two car rides up to the birth center, a traumatic cervical check on day one to then be sent back home, many walks around the neighborhood, yoga ball bouncing, 1 game of Monopoly, snacks, massages, and support - Keelia was at our beck and call. By the time we got to the birth center (again) on day 2 after 36 hours, I was only at 1cm and 50% effaced. Keelia helped me calm down from exhausition and frustration at this news, and we made a plan to get misoprostol to thin my cervix but hopefully proceed with no other interventions. Miraculously, Ava was born 7 hours later. Keelia coached me through contractions which came back to back for hours, waved lavendar oil in front of my face for nausea, massaged my back, covered the clock when she noticed it stressing me out, got me into the shower with Joe when I hit the wall of transition, and helped me breathe through pushing - 3 contractions! She reassured me every step of the way - calmly & knowing I could do it at all moments. In this amazing doula's hands, I felt loved, safe, and supported. Thank you, Keelia.

She made herself available for texts and calls before the pregnancy and we had to text and call her a few times anytime my wife was exhibiting symptoms she was concerned about. Keelia was responsive to our questions and did her best to answer them even though some of them were of a medical nature. During the labor process she was also fantastic. Very calm and composed under pressure and very responsive to my wife's needs. My wife, in no uncertain terms, declared that she wouldn't have been able to do it without Keelia. Keelia massaged her during every contraction and it seemed that was the only thing that would help with pain management. In fact because of the massaging my wife was able to make it to 9 cm without an epidural -- she was super fatigued which is why she ended up doing the epidural but I'm pretty sure if labor hadn't occurred during the wee hours of the morning Keelia's massage techniques would have helped her give birth without using any medication. Thanks Keelia, you were great.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Amrit! She guided me through my entire feeding journey…read morewith my second baby without any judgement. More importantly, she was compassionate and practical which can be VERY hard to find in the lactation world. She attentively asked me my goals for feeding this time around and then helped me make a game-plan at each step. Ultimately, I was unable/chose to stop nursing and pumping. While I personally felt so disappointed in myself for that, Amrit was nothing but supporting and loving. She supported me in any decision I made to keep my baby happy and fed and for that i'm forever grateful. She also helped me figure out how to get on a pumping schedule (when I needed to) and eventually how to wean without getting mastitis. Although my feeding journey eventually did not include breastfeeding, I'm so so happy I found Amrit to help me navigate all the things that come along with feeding a newborn. I felt like I was always in wonderful and capable hands and would recommend her to every new mom who needs some support. Breastfeeding is HARD and Amrit never made me feel guilty or bad. She simply supported me and helped me find something that worked for me and my family. Thank you again Amrit for all of your love and support with baby Ryan!

She taught me so much and I could NOT have learned the things I did had I not met with her! She was able to help me latch my son on in the office and we have been thriving since our visit! Ahe was told she can not accept patients with my insurance, and yet, she saw us anyway!!!! I am so grateful and genuinely believe we would have failed without her help and over 40 years of experience! She is unable to see other women with my insurance (I have state funded mediCal) unless they are a Bayside patient. However, if you have private insurance you can contact Bayside in Berkeley and make an appt. There's a $37.50 copay for the visit.

I'm currently 7 weeks postpartum and I miss our visits with Michelle and her team so very much. My…read morepartner and I were undecided about where we'd give birth. We had an uncomplicated home birth with my daughter and another midwife 4 years before. Now, at the age of 43, I felt it might make more sense to have our second child in a hospital. I feared I'd have more complications. After sitting with it for some time, my chiropractor gave me the referral for Michelle Borok's midwifery services. When I met Michelle I went from being unsure about where we'd give birth to an absolute whole body yes to a home birth. My husband felt the same. We're so glad we chose Michelle as our midwife. I've worked in health care throughout the Bay Area for over 15 years, Michelle is a unique blend of warmth and professionalism. She is direct, transparent, honest, clear, wise, and knowledgeable. She's truly a gem! We would work with Michelle again if we were ever to have another child. Michelle was a grounding force that guided me through my fears. Every prenatal appointment we left her home feeling secure, loving, and afloat on that pink pregnancy cloud every person and partnership deserves to tap in to. Thank you from the depths of our hearts, Michelle, for ushering our sweet child Earth side.

I continue to see her for annual exams because she'll come to my home and I can wear my own clothes. This provides me a whole other level of comfort that I didn't get during my anxiety-inducing check-ups at traditional medical offices. I had a hospital experience with my first child that was without complications, but wasn't the culture or environment that I truly wanted. My second pregnancy was low-risk and I was much more confident about birth that I sought out a midwife. Michelle taught me so much about pregnancy, my body, nutrition, and beyond. She helped me make better, more authentic decisions for myself and new baby. I still benefit from her lessons to this day. She is warm, takes her time, and considers my whole self (holistically) when giving advice. I cannot recommend her enough. She's someone you'll want on your team for the rest of your life.
