EAST is a trendy and hip hotel/restaurant/bar in the St Pauli neighborhood Hamburg. The restaurant is one sexy space, with soaring ceilings and a dramatic staircase entranceway---the descent down into the main restaurant is nothing short of impressive. The menu is a bit eclectic and quite extensive covering most Asian/Japanese specialities. The sushi rolls are fresh and among the best I've had in Germany. I also really enjoyed my starter--Coconut milk and lemongrass soup with a fried chicken skewer. The only thing longer than the food menu is the drink menu, which is literally dozens of pages long. This review is for the restaurant inside the hotel: Went here with some people while on a business trip for a nicer lunch. The interior is modern and unique, with cream architectural details that reminded me of a more subdued Gaudi. You can see patches of the old brick showing thru... a nice mix of new and older. The menu is a sort of fusion of Asian and European. We had the free bread first - mix of 3 types of bread - serviced with Fleur de Sel (fancy sea salt) and a very nice olive oil. Then two of us enjoyed the coconut milk and lemon grass soup with a chicken and pineapple skewer on top. The soup had a bit of foam and a small amount of fresh herbs on top. Very delicious, and quite a large portion. My favorite part of the meal. Then I had the salad with beef carpaccio. The beef was almost too thin and tender (not a lot of texture and very mild) and unfortunately the salad was over-dressed but the dressing was very nice (vinaigrette). My other dining companions had sushi and tuna tartar and sashimi. All of them really enjoyed their meals. Went here for some drinks and the drinks were ok. Not the best I have tried ever, but they looked pretty good and were well blended. I tried from their east selection. I had the Rhuby, which was pretty good. Wish it was less ice cubes and a smaller glass however. I got the same feeling with the other drink. Lots of ice in a big glass. We all know we pay for the alcohol so why use big glasses when its mostly ice. Would look better in a small one if you ask me. We went here on the night of a charity event (nove'15) so the restaurant part was closed off, but we still could get food at the bar. I did not try the food, but my man did and he was pleased with the sushi he tried. Drinks are a bit expensive, but at the same time, I would guess its a fair price for this place. Service was just ok, but I guess it was a busy night and that it somewhat affected their attention. Felt a bit underdressed in regular clothing so I would wear something a little bit more stylish if I ever were to visit this place again. read more

A spacious place for dinner with amazing design - the rotating columns. It was very loud there, but when the food arrived I was really happy - I had pasta with shrimps. I loved the pasta that was of great quality and the sauce - oh the sauce - was amazing! Shrimps cooked at the best! Served with some tomatoes and other vegetables. This restaurant has cool ambience and an interesting menu. Bears a striking resemblance to TAO in Las Vegas - so if you like that restaurant I think you will like this one (and vice versa). Cocktail menu is extensive and it's a restaurant you could visit just as a bar if you're not in the market for dinner. I recommend sharing rolls, since you get the most variety that way. For the less sushi adventurous out there, you can also order fully cooked food, including steak and a Thai influenced soup. Reservations seem difficult to get but the space is huge, so if you're in the area, you can drop by to see if they have space. read more

This review is for the restaurant. First of all: what a cool looking restaurant. I would go here if it were just to see the interesting interior. A conference with my company was the reason why I was in Hamburg; my coworkers suggested this place, and I'm glad they did - it was up my alley - trendy, lively ambiance with inventive yet-well-done Asian fusion. I had: Sashimi combination (small) Beijing Duck Roll (like Beijing duck in a sushi roll - except less expensive!) Dictates of the East (such a delicious dessert) The sushi was good - my Beijing duck roll could have had more sauce (though I love fusion when it is done well - and this is such a cool concept). East Hotel, Ex oh, ex oh Hamburg! This posh location is chic in design and has a very business trendy vibe. Nonetheless, I do enjoy stepping out to East when I have the urge to consume sushi in a more lively surrounding, dressed in a sleek cocktail dress to sip a few cocktails either before, during, after my meal, or even all of the above. The ceilings of this place are far as the eye can see, and the decor is very modern, yet minimalistic. There are a few bars to choose from located on different levels. The upstairs areas provide more lounge seating, while the bar below is bustling with men in business suits either visiting Hamburg or local business men having a company dinner. Upscale and a more mature crowd. There is a private members club upstairs called UpperEast which mostly entertains on weekends, with Friday often being promoted more heavily, since I receive weekly updates via my smart phone alerting me of special events taking place there. The sushi here is very tasty with an Asian fusion preparation in its ingredients. For those wishing to try something a bit heartier, the main dishes are equally delicious and nicely portioned. I normally order sushi, since I like to go dancing after me meal, in which I can recommend Spicy Tempura Roll with chili sauce, Soft-shell crab roll, or for healthier low carb choices, the salmon and tuna sashimi are fresh. Honestly, if you closed your eyes and randomly chose a roll, you would be fine, they are all considerably delectable. The main course section that I seldom explore due to my choice to dine lightly, but can suggest some dishes that I have tried and enjoyed are the Braised cheek of veal with potato mash or a Seasonal Fish Dish. When I have room for dessert, I am usually am not at East dining alone, I share a dessert variation for two, which is their sampler dish that provides a tiny taste of a couple flavors and sweet textures. If one only comes here to head to the bar, they have nice strong cocktails and a good wine selection. I have not stayed at East Hotel, but have been to a dinner party in one of their suites which is a great choice to entertain outside of one's home and the hotel itself is not only lively within, but only steps around the corner from the famous Reeperbahn attraction that keeps one up all night and on Saturdays, just in time to visit the fish market when the sun rises on Sunday! I enjoy the atmosphere here, less for social reasons and mainly for comfort and lounging amongst friends when I feel like wearing my favorite dressy heals and red lipstick for an evening! read more

I can't rate the hotel or its rooms because i have never slept there. BUT i can rate the bar and the restaurant. First of all, the sushi there is amazing, its one of the best in Hamburg, but of course one of the most expensive. With a bottle of wine, expect to pay around 50EUR/person. The bar is very cool and hip. the decor is really nice. The bartenders are very friendly and up to the task. The drinks are delicious. Make sure to taste the Henri de Batida if you like sour Vodka drinks. The drinks cost 9 or 9.50EUR, a rather acceptable price for the place. The clientele is upper class. Many women exhibit a newly done nose, chin, cheekbones, lips etc... and men are mostly in suits, but of course there are a lot of informal 'normal' people! read more

Food was not really a good value for the price. Ordered "Sushi & Sashimi a la Chef". If this is Hamburg's version of Chef's Choice (o-makase), it is quite sad. The only variety offered was Salmon (sake), Tuna (maguro), Mackerel (saba), and Crab (Kani). For 36 euros, I'd expect at least some shrimp (ebi), octopus (tako), salmon roe (ikura), squid (ika), or sea urchin (uni). What a disappointment. Also...sushi rolls slathered with mayonnaise? I love the east Restaurant very much! Its fantastic building, interior and food can't be beat! Prices are quite high, but you also get to see something (interesting people) or can be part of one of the huge parties they do every two to three months. Travelled all the way to Hamburg for this restaurant. The most amazing design, easly the most visually stunning restaurant I have been to. On top of that my new favourite Cocktail bar! Apple crumble cocktail!! The service was a little pretentious upstairs but I suppose in keeping with the venue. Downstairs, service friendly but they seemed a little understaffed. Not an extensive menu. The sushi is out of this world and really good value for money. Main courses also very nice. Puddings not so succesful - I had the pear crumble which was a bit naff but it was served with a jaw droppingly sublime pear sorbet!!!!! read more

East was a very nice restaurant. The wait staff is very nice. The building seems to be a old factory that has been remodeled. The food is good. We had a hamburger and fries. the portion was huge. The only thing is that they have set times for dinner, which seem to be a little inflexible. I would eat here again, bring a guest and/or recommend it as well. read more

This has become an establishment in Hamburg. I haven't been to the hotel in years since I've been living in Hamburg for quite some time. I am regularly in their restaurant and bar though. The restaurant tends to be quite shi-shi and you have to like that vibe. Lots or arrogant posers but you can easily drown them out...come with your own friends and be just as loud and have fun. The bar is one of the better ones in town in terms of the drinks you get. It does get packed though on party nights. Same for the restaurant. Make sure to reserve. Food is consistent and I consider this a place for dependable sushi...i.e. not the best of the best but always one of the options when having a Japanese urge. The ambiance of the restaurant is cool though and sit on the outskirts of the restaurant under the beautiful stone ceilings. At same time, you want to see and be seen, sit at the sushi bar in the middle. There's a staircase going down from the bar area to the restaurant where everyone gets their model on! Service in the restaurant can also be spotty at times so do keep this in the back of your mind when determining where to go for the evening. If with friends and out for a good time, easily overlooked. If you plan on analysing every aspect of your meal, you may be disappointed. And finally, god forbid you end up hooking up at the bar.
