I have just began my membership journey with the Y in May but have been blown away by all the community oriented resources and kids classes for my kiddos. I've thankfully been able to get back to working out with the help of the kids classes and their child care center. My kids have grown to love the staff, it's been truly welcoming in that regard. I would also like to shoutout Jazmine at the front desk. She was able to talk me into signing up for a membership and swim lessons for my two boys. I was honestly all over the place when I came into their gym, hadn't done much research. But after a quick tour and conversation with Jazmine turned things around. Make sure to work with her if you ever get logged out of your account. I've embarrassingly enough have needed to change my password thrice. But yes overall 5 stars, I'm glad to have such a nice establishment in my area. The gym itself is nice, good equipment and cold. The other customers seem to understand gym etiquette. The last service I will recommend is their free food program. As a single mother of two I will gladly accept assistance. Again thankfully to the conversation with Jasmin, she was able to sign me up. read more

My three children have attended YMCA sleepaway camp for the past three years, and until this year, we had always had a positive experience. This week, my daughter developed pink eye. Around 10:00 a.m., the camp contacted me, took her to Big Bear Urgent Care, and kept me informed throughout the medical visit. She was diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis and prescribed antibiotic eye drops. I appreciated the prompt medical attention and communication. Later that afternoon, I was informed that I needed to drive to camp to pick her up. As a Public Health Nurse, I understand the importance of infection control and protecting other campers. What deeply upset me was not the decision to send her home--it was how she says she was treated while waiting for me. When I arrived at 7 pm after a three-hour drive, my daughter was in tears. She told me she had been isolated since the night before in a single cabin room by herself, with the door kept closed. (So that was approximately 23 hours? An 11 yrs old girl isolated for, well minus 3 hrs for urgent care lets say, 20 hours?) She said she wasn't allowed or offered to participate in even solo activities and had very little interaction with anyone. When she went to the restroom, she overheard staff whispered to other staff, "Be careful, she might touch everything, just spray the bathroom." She also stated that her meals were taken into her single cabin room, placed far away from her, so the Camp Director who brought it in wouldn't be too close to her (even though its bacterial infection and spread through direct contact- it was NOT an airborne or droplet precautions), making her feel like people were afraid to come near her. She told me she felt like she was "in prison." Whether every detail happened exactly as she perceived it or not, that was her experience, and no child should leave camp feeling frightened, ashamed, or treated like they are less than a person because they became ill. I fully support reasonable precautions for contagious illnesses. However, children also deserve COMPASSION, REASSURANCE, and human KINDNESS while waiting for their parents to arrive. Especially from the Camp Director. We have loved YMCA sleepaway camp for years, which makes this experience especially disappointing. I hope the camp reviews how children in medical isolation are cared for and trains staff to balance infection control with empathy. Unfortunately, after this experience, our family will not be returning. read more

Really disappointing. I joined nearly 2 years ago for the pool, and since then there have been nothing but closures with the pool. First they increased the number of swimmers per lane to 3, which makes it hard to swim consistently throughout the time booked - in other pools where circle swimming is enforced, at least the laps are organized by speed so it keeps things moving. But here, you could have a walker/loafer in the same lane as us faster swimmers and it makes no sense! But since this past summer, the pool has been mainly closed in the mornings/days and only open in the afternoons. With 1 month left in the year, it is now COMPLETELY CLOSED for the holidays and won't open up until after the new year. Really thinking of canceling if it doesn't change. read more

I joined last summer to use the pool. Which was amazing but then in winter the pool area is too cold to swim the pool is heated but not enough to counter how cold the pool area and locker room. Then this summer they increased lane occupancy to 3 swimmers and considerably less openings are there to reserve. I def feel bad for people with limited availability I have a pretty open schedule and could barely get in to swim, So sadly I canceled my membership. read more

Had someone with me who's been a member for years and needed to use the restroom, but they were turned away. So much for being a "family-oriented" place. It's odd for an organization that calls itself Christian to turn people away for basic needs. Maybe they should change their name to YMDA : Young Men's Devilish Association." I've been coming to this gym on and off for decades. It has had many transformations over that time. Now this may not be the hippest or trendiest gym in NoHo, but one thing that has always stayed consistent is the welcoming smiles and kindness of the staff and members. Parking is available on both sides of the building, as well as street parking. It's very handicap accessible. The pool is kept at a constant warm temperature. The locker rooms are clean and have lockers available (bring your own lock). There are open showers and ones with curtains. I love the swimsuit spinner they have that wrings your suit out really well. The gym is small but has all the key equipment. They also have things like jump ropes, bands, balls, etc for use. Most of the cardio machines are linked to the tv's (bring your own headsets, earbuds) and plug in. The treadmills have their own tv's (I wish the recumbent bikes did). They have TRX, weight bag, and giant tires outside. They also offer a variety of group classes with helpful instructors with a variety of levels to fit any lifestyle. They also offer free child care for I believe an hour. The few times we used it was a little more stressful than it needed to be. Perhaps it would benefit a slightly older child. My grandson was just being overly sensitive and they came to get me during my workout. Which was fine. The lady was just a bit rude so I never brought them back. I would love to see a sauna... But space is limited, I get it. But one could dream. read more

COVID was tough on everybody, but this Y has had a reasonable, measured re-opening of facilities that accommodates most people's needs. The newly renovated pool, locker rooms, weight rooms are kept clean and tidy. There are a number of well attended classes all the time. I particularly like the staff that works to know people's names, are always friendly, and really try to help a person out. I swim there daily, and the lifeguards and swim instructors are very helpful and safety minded. They continue to work on improvement, currently closing the child care center for renovation. I like that whatever profits created go to children's programs and camps, not to corporate profit and bonuses. read more

NEWS ALERT! You and your kids may be at risk for INFECTION or ILLNESS due to YMCA HEALTH VIOLATIONS, including UNSANITARY and UNSAFE conditions. I was a member of the East Valley YMCA in North Hollywood. I was infected with a horrible case of Athlete's Foot that cracked my skin open and made my toes bleed for months. When I got the condition, I was only showering there! I have changed memberships to BURBANK YMCA, which is a decent and clean facility. In sharp contrast to Metro YMCA (East Valley is one of many dirty facilities of Metro YMCA) I SUED the Metro YMCA this year and lost. Even though I could prove the violations of FUNGUS in the SHOWERS. It does not matter. I still lost. And got nothing. The Metro Y does not care about you or the quality of service you receive for your membership fees. The best way to prevent FOOT FUNGUS is to avoid the Metro YMCA altogether. And the VICE PRESIDENT of RISK MANAGEMENT of Metro Y, who showed up to defend the lawsuit LIED IN COURT. Anel Henry said the facilities have a regular cleaning schedule. Only good thing about this gym is location. It needs updating very badly!!! The mats seem to be over 20 years old. They're dirty. The weight room floor is coming up. And I have tripped over it several times. No back machines and maybe 2 leg machines. A very dusty outside area. With the exception of a few front desk and healthy lifestyle people. Most everyone is lazy and non enthusiastic. Can't speak for aquatics people I've never made it past tge disgusting mens locker room. Smells of mold, dirty floors, lockers from the 70's, not a place you want to shower or undress. All the classes are for seniors Between 50-70 This place needs someone to put some TLC into it ASAP. read more

I've a member of YMCA for multiple years. Then in 2020 happened COVID and I've put my membership on hold. Then this year I decided to completely change my gym. I was about to cancel my membership but YMCA billed me earlier. Right after this I sent them email and ask to cancel my membership and reimburse me my fee. I've waited for answer few days and finally got the email from director of membership YMCA telling that my membership is canceled but they not going to reimburse me my money. After further questions with few other staff turn outs that supposedly YMCA policy is to cancel 30 days prior billing. Ok, I've asked for proof of that as they said that I signed this contract or form. By this day I didn't get any correspondence from their office with proof of this policy. I consider this is fraud on be half of YMCA unless they will show me my contract with this clause but anyhow customer service is horrible you can't speak with cancelation department on the phone all is done via email to which they don't respond. Be careful now days if this type of scam on behalf of seems legit business. read more

It's slim Pickens around here for a good gym, and they have good cardio equipment and it is clean. Other equipment is minimal. It's also expensive (42/month) for those not eligible for financial aid. Appalled at the lack of service I am getting in regard to a billing issue. They are literally trying to tell me that can't reverse money once it drafts your bank account. They have also not given me any documentation stating this on the fly "too bad so sad" bs, likely because it doesn't exist. I've asked twice now for the name of the person refusing my partial refund so I can escalate the issue. The cherry on top is that want me to pay for this excess time (before my accepted date of cancellation) even though they have had a Covid outbreak And yes, I have proof. Took the babies here for their first swimming lessons. Loved it! You can tell the instructors loved what they do, and it shows. Will definitely take the more advanced classes when they get older. Highly recommend! read more

They have limited time for lap swimming. And since I can only go at night, it may be crowded. The facilities are OLD, the floor is like from 30 years ago. I recommend 24 fitness. And the lights dim when the dryer starts working! read more

Before you attend classes make sure you read the fine print and go online to research YMCAs policies. Turns out that all though I left home early for yoga class I arrived 15mins late due to unexpected st. closures on my way to class. And I was kicked out of class by the instructor. Be ware, it doesn't matter if your are a newbie, there are no exceptions! For me, this was upsetting and frustrating that I drove all the way there just to be thrown out. The 2 guys sitting in the front desk we're playing on their phones and not paying attention, they could have warned me before I entered into class. Another rule people should know about is that boys between the ages 6-7 are NOT allowed in the girls locker room. Yet, I have seen boys older than 6 go in the girls lockers. If YMCA is serious about their rules and policies they should make sure to tell new members to read the policies. When we signed up no one emphasized it. Don't be a sucker. Don't sign your life away without reading the fine print. Lastly, my husband and I enrolled our kid for swimming classes sometime October-November. Around our second week we noticed the pool cealing mechanism was broken. Many kids, including mine have been taking lessons out in the cold and getting sick. We submitted complaints right from the get go but the issue was not addressed. If the cealing is not repaired before the new 2018 sessions we will be cancelling our membership. They expect members to respect their policies yet they won't take care of their customers, us. Other parents advise this issue has been lingering for quite some time. read more

Great for healthy families. They have programs that are included with their membership for kids and adults. I have recommend this place to all my friends. I work out at the gym/weight room and of the many I have ever been to, this one is my favorite. The men & women come to work --- not socialize and take up space. I am not much of a gym person. The crowds, the massive spaces, everyone chatting, etc. For me, I just want a quiet space where machines are always open and I can come in and do my workout and get out with minimal fuss. So for me, this YMCA is perfect. Everyone is perfectly friendly but people respect your privacy to just do a quiet workout if that's what you want. The space is small but there's plenty of machines for the amount of people there and only a couple times have all the ellipticals been occupied. But there's always another elliptical like machine for use. The staff in the gym are always helpful and friendly. And there's an outside area where you can do mat work outside and get some fresh air. They also have those huge tires so people can do that tire flipping workout. The cost per month is way cheaper than a 24 hour fitness, too. So, for me this place fits all my needs. Small, get the machines I want, not overcrowded, not super loud. Just get your workout done and head home. read more

I'd like to feel all warm and nostalgic about this place; I took swim lessons and drama classes here when I was a kid. But until about a year ago, I didn't have to feel nostalgia because absolutely nothing had changed since then. Nothing. Not the rusting lockers. Not the tired classrooms. And especially not the woefully undersized facilities. That's changing some, thankfully. The men's locker room has had a facelift recently, with new lockers and floors. They recently installed a sunshade over the central atrium and removed the ratty carpeting from the equipment rooms, and they're about to renovate the pool (so many of the problems people have complained about here are gone). But the place is still inadequate for the crowds it accommodates: free weights are crammed into a tiny strip of a room where it's impossible not to bonk the person on the next bench, the spinning studio is dark, cramped and depressing and the whole place is just. Too. Small. Having worked out at lavish "Ys" downtown, in Koreatown and on the Westside, I don't understand why the organization didn't raze this place years ago and build a more modern facility -- interest from the community is certainly there. So why am I still there, and why does the place get a "3" rating from me? Staffers here are truly dedicated to being a community hub. The classes are inexpensive and great. And (contrary to what someone else on here said) a playroom is available so you can entertain your kids while you work out (though I wish it were open weekends and didn't have a two-hour break in the afternoon). Are you listening, powers that be with YMCA Los Angeles? Please build a new facility for East Valley residents. I called to inquire about membership fees for Seniors and was told that it's $39 and that there is no reduced rate. This is higher than 24 hr Fitness which offers similar classes and reduced rates. Why would I pay so much when other gyms cater to seniors and offer reduced rates. They don't offer anything special and they are overcharging for whatever they offer. WHO PEED IN THE POOL? Seriously, the Creature From the Black Lagoon always wanted to know, and well, I quit this YMCA/gym a while back for a number of reasons, but the e-mails alerting me that the pool was closed for 24 hours (again) because another DIAPER FELL INTO THE POOL, was one of the turn offs (and if you read my other reviews you'll learn there are some inexpensive public pools available.) ANOTHER THING I DIDN'T/DON'T LIKE, as I read the reviews that claim that they will "work" with you no matter what your budget, is that I GOT THE STRONG FEELING THAT THERE WAS NOT A CONSISTANT FEE STRUCTURE, say a sliding scale and that this is all about if someone likes you or not and still works there. I joined when I was on unemployment and I showed an unemployment statement (not an actual check) which was not much, but I paid near the usual membership fee and near the usual monthly fee for some time without complaint. I stopped going when I had an injury and continued to pay those fees without complaint though I wasn't using the gym. When I could no longer budget it, I called and talked to the then manager and said I had better go on a maintenance fee so I wouldn't loose my membership. This person reduced the amount quite a bit. Eventually I went back and this person saw me frequently and never brought up any problems to me. I informally volunteered quite a bit, as needed, for various events, and even sold 100 raffle tickets for one fund raiser, in part because I was trying to make up for the fact that I couldn't afford regular fees and I wanted to be part of the "community." From that point on I got letters in the mail upping my fees about a dollar a year - and I thought this was fair enough because I met some people there who were bringing children with them - families - and paying about what I had as a single person. Then came the day when they said that they needed to SEE MY TAX RETURN in order to give me the reduced fee. Excuse me? They acted like I had been sneaking around or like the now ex manager had made some secret deal with me. Though they saw me a lot, and they had my e-mail ( I got e-mails from a few instructors), my US. mail, and I had given them my new cell phone number, they also claimed they had not been able to get ahold of me. Though I had given the new cell phone number to the manager and she had called me on it, they claimed not to have the number. After writing to the regional manager who basically had the "you complained so we don't want you as a member" routine on me, we ended the automatic deductions from my bank for gym membership and I was totally turned off. Oddly, some time later I got an e-mail from them, a form letter, stating that I was missed and could return without having to pay a membership fee. WHY DON'T THEY JUST POST THEIR RATES FOR EVERYONE TO SEE? read more

I have been a member for 7 months or so. I signed my daughter up for swim classes which I loved. She progressed nicely and I learned a lot of the swim instructors. Along the way we had an encounter with one instructor that didn't work out for us. It was not a good experience and my daughter regressed big time after this encounter. I started to inquire who the instructors for the classes were so that we didn't get this one instructor. Not every instructor/swim teacher will suite the needs of every child. And I believe parents have the right to know who will be handling their VERY young child in a swimming pool. In my daughter's case she's only 3. Unfortunately it has become their policy that they do NOT and will not tell you who the instructor is for the swim class before you sign up for it. Yes that's right. They want you to pay, but refuse to tell you who will be teaching the class you pay for. I took it up with the director about how I needed to know who the instructors were. But they would only agree to give me the info AFTER the classes start. So by that time the classes are pretty much full as was for my case. My last straw is that I went in and upon learning that the class I wanted was full... they still refused to tell me who taught the class right after that had one spot left. And It was at this point AFTER the classes had started! Swim was the main reason I signed up for the YMCA. There were other classes and perks. But the few classes my child signed up for were chaotic and unorganized. Overpacked and unprepared. Gym is super small. And locker/showers need some major sprucing up... it's pretty gross in there. They had no problem letting me go. The wouldn't tell me who the instructor was and I kindly mentioned I would have to cancel my membership without the info... and they just handed me the cancelation paper without any hesitation. No effort to keep me at all. Facilities are not up to date. Shingles in the pool roof broken. Pool temps unpredictable and sometimes way too cold for children (my experience in the winter months). And they have no desire to keep me as a member. There were some amazing swim teachers we loved and we hate to leave because of them. THEY are the only reason I will add more than one star to this place. But unfortunately when they want you to sign up for a class and pay without telling you who will be handling your small child... this place wasn't right for me! read more

People like u can stay in Sherman Oaks. The gym is small but never crowded. Fitlinxx is a big help. My fav class is Zumba..great workout & a great time. Gabrielle is awesome! Although this gym may have a slight smell all its own..the price is better than any other Y (if u did ur homework u would know that). My kids LOVE their Judo class & my oldest cant wait until he's 11 & can start the Fit Kids classes. My daughter is quite the pain in the butt 18 mnth old but the girls in child watch take good care of her. I am injured right now but when i return i am positive I will not be dodging bullets....only the old folks in the parking lot. read more

I finally had to quit the Y and start going to the Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks pool because the Y's pool is just too darned warm. I'm sure 86 degrees is great for senior citizens doing water jogging. However, for someone trying to squeeze in a mile during a lunch break, it's awful. My first review said that 86 degrees was not unbearable. I have changed my mind. read more

I have been a member of the North Hollywood YMCA location for a year now almost. I would rate it 3 stars, as it's an OK place for families that need child care while working out, or to engage in family friendly activities, make new friends for their children, and anything else that is sweet at a spot like this....however, I'm giving them a 4 star, due to the Swimming classes & teachers. This location has a great Aquatics supervisor (Greg Paggi). Even on a day where I was grumpy and kind of gave him an attitude about my paper work and what not, he was very courteous and resolved the issue to his best extent. I'm literally running out of there, stressed out, and he still made sure I understood the facts about classes etc. He is always very prompt about his e-mail responses, and he seems to treat his staff very kindly. How supervisors treat their staff means the world to me. I highly dislike people that act better than other people due to some name tag and a few bucks more in salary. Anyway... the reception area is OK. Two of the girls are always so very sweet to me and my son, but some other one is a very "I-hate-this-job-and-I'm-not-going-to-try-to-hide-it". it is what it is, I don't have high expectations. Big minus is their promotion of paying low fees for joining, but truth be told, I'm paying full fees and of course added fees for swimming classes. Paper work is a major hassle and it's just easier to sign up for full fees, than to deal with that stuff. I wish they could make it easier. Another minus is their website. Rarely up to date. But that is not the location's issue, but the company overall. I like the diversity of kids and ethnicities at this location. I agree with the other yelpers about the showers and locker rooms not being very...ehm...sanitary... but let me tell ya: The swim instructors are ALL WORTH IT. I think we have tried every single one of them, and each and every one came with a set of skills/attitude and engagement that made my son grow, feel safe in the water and he can actually SWIM now. He used to be the type of kid that didn't even want shower water on his face (!). I could only day dream about submerging his head under a liquid surface. Geez. He was a bad case of water fear all up in your face. (I've seen worse kids there, swim like little fish after a few weeks too). Consistency was key for us. The fact that the swim instructors are free to bring in their own flavor or style is great in my opinion. I am writing the longest review here and wished my memory was stronger to recall each and every one's names. But I can't. But whoever is hired and working there now, early 2015, is a fantastic swimming instructor. One is excited, the other one is calm, the third one is athletic and loud, the fourth one is goofy... I wish I could give them all a big fat hug for helping my son turn into a little guy with both respect for the water and knowledge enough to feel free in it, playful in it, and feel at home during classes. This is such a great gym!! I am really into workout classes, and the East Valley YMCA has tons to choose from at all hours of the day. I started off with a free 7 day pass and tried the workout room first. Larger gyms for sure have more machines than the Y, however I found that there is always an open machine and its never really crowded here. The room is nice and clean, the machines are newer and working, and the people take the time to wipe them down after they are used. Pretty good :) Next I tried out a few classes. First I went to studio cycling with Priscilla. The class was pretty tough, but everyone was encouraging and Priscilla took the time to help me adjust my bike and shout out tips to me over the music during the class. A few days later I went to the kickboxing class with Cheryl which totally kicked my ass, but I loved every minute of it! She was also very helpful by instructing me on proper form and tips as well. The Y also has a very large pool, locker rooms, and many children's programs. After my week was up I joined. Wow, im the 1st? ok I'll take that. I go to the Y for a few reasons. 1st being that I have been going to Y's pretty much since I was 4 and taking swimming lessons. 2nd, I need to keep myself in good shape. Being so tall, weight piles on and secretly disperses its self through out my lower half. and 3rd, its NOT a fashion show. People dont get done up to go here. THAT being said... this one in particular, could use some funding. its a little beat up, but it gets the job done. The staff are really great and helpful. There are yoga, pilates, and spinning classes, all of which i need to try. and the best part.. they have a pool. again, i need to try that as well. Over all, Im greatful that its there and even more so, that its in walking distance of my crib. Thanks for being there YMCA, after all these years. read more
