Much of the home is not restoration and only has a few Kerr family items but all is decorated to period with a few local artist donations to help the restoration cause. Free entry and tour... but there are containers for donations.. no one asks but it only seems right to drop it in. Great grounds... stop by for an hour it won't be wasted.

Made a quick stop to the quiet city of Onancock while in Chincoteague on vacation. We happened to…read morearrive when free tours were being given (Thurs-Sat 11am-3pm I think). The woman giving tours was finishing up with another group when we arrived and when they finished up she promptly started with my group. I cannot stress how cool the tour was. The woman who gave the tour was incredibly knowledgeable of the Ker family as well as other prominent eastern coast families. We loved that we could actually go in the rooms and touch and see parts of the house that, in other historic places, would be roped off. Not everything in the house was original, but they did a good job of placing furniture that would have been in the house in the appropriate rooms. If you opt out of the tour or can't get it, make sure to check out the mastodon tooth and vertebrae found on the grounds. They seem out of place amongst the 19th century relics, but man were they cool. Also make sure to check out the beautiful gardens to the back and side of the house. Overall a great experience if you love historic houses and if you find yourself in the area!

It sits inside the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge, so it can be part of a great day of hiking, the beach, and looking for ponies! When I stopped by it wasn't open for tours so just call ahead if that is something you are building your trip around.

But, I splurged over an hour shooting photos, playing Pokemon Go, and shooting video here! I'd LOVE TO COME BACK AGAIN! Be careful where you park, the roads are narrow, and you could block the ways in or out, and be careful of incoming cars, or outgoing cars, because u don;t see or hear them coming or going, and many people made this mistake. Sometimes, it's totally dead, and no one around, then suddenly lots of people show up. I was there for over an hour, in this cycled through like this a lot! i do hope I can return some day!

"Never knowing my right foot from my left My hat from my…read moreglove I'm too misty and too much in love" (Johnny Mathis) As we were driving down the main drag on Chincoteague Island, I caught sight of an imposing blackened bronze statue of a horse, which I soon learned was from a children's book named "Misty of Chincoteague" written by Marguerite Henry in 1947. Now since I spent my childhood reading Twilight Zone books and biographies of Mickey Mantle, I had never heard of Misty. The book tells the story of a Spanish ship that wrecked off Virginia's coast so the hundreds of the ponies being transported had to swim to nearby islands to survive. They lived as feral horses for centuries and are still there to this day. One of the horses was adopted by a young brother and sister and named the Chincoteague mare "Misty". The book was so popular that it spawned five sequels, the last of which was written in 1992. The statue shows Misty galloping along a beach next to a rooster and a duck. The statue and plaque were dedicated by the Misty of Chincoteague Foundation on June 14, 2006, to honor the upcoming 60th anniversary of the book's publication. What a cool and interesting sight to see!

I am going to review the entire town all at once…read more It's really everything I love about a beach town, with very little of what I hate about beach towns. Lots of nature, locally owned businesses, that working-class family vibe - it doesn't come off with that snotty rich kid "my family owns a shore house" attitude that many beach towns seem to have. So what if the houses aren't too fancy, the restaurants aren't gourmet, and the people aren't too good-looking? You want that crap, go elsewhere. Chincoteague has natural beauty and real small town character that you're not going to find anywhere else.
