Fourth of July weekend was the first time I visited Easton's Beach. This visit was mainly because it was where my husband and I would begin our spontaneous attempt at the Cliff Walk. We drove down Memorial Blvd from where we were staying in Middletown and then found the beach. There a paid parking lot, but - had we known - there's also street parking if you're lucky or go there early enough during a not heavy season. The beach is a three-quarter mile long strip. You get beautiful views of the ocean and coast. I saw some surfers and families enjoying laying out on the sand. Apparently, there's also an aquarium that is run by a non-profit that's goals is to protect and preserve the Narragansett Bay. Tip: If you're doing the Cliff Walk, you'll walk along the boardwalk on an incline from the paid parking lot. You'll then see signs pointing to where the Cliff Walk begins. read more

One of the top 10 New England beaches. It is also called First Beach and is the largest in Newport, RI. It's 3/4 miles long with plenty of benches and has a boardwalk; the Cliff Walk trail is located nearby. Downtown Newport is also located nearby; it's a walkable city with beautiful vista. Since it's summer, they have the summer concert series and free parking on those nights after 4 pm. However, during the day, there are parking fees. Unfortunately, they're tearing down the carousel and snack bar, I'm sure due to old age. However, there are food trucks, restrooms, and a playground. The rotunda and bathhouse are closed but expected to be open in 2025 due to the demolition of the carousel and snack bar. This beach holds a special place in my heart because that was where I got married. We loved the venue and the vintage carousel. The rotunda was spacious and staff were helpful. The views of the ocean and bay from up there were breathtaking. We had a photo op on the carousel which was fun. Our ceremony took place right on the beach. The day on the beach was beautiful even after a passing rain shower. The only downfall that day was the red tide; it was an infestation of red algae. All in all, this beach is a lovely place with a great memory attached to it for me. read more

Went here with my family on Sunday July 14th 2024. They do have parking here and it's 15 on the weekdays, and 25 on the weekends. Our vehicle was a truck, and they let us park nearest to the shade almost underneath the building. Like that it is easy to get on the beach once one pays for parking. Oh, and the parking machine doesn't take discover cards, as my dad tried and it didn't take it, luckily he had another card on him. Once that was taken care of easy to get on and off the beach. Like how they have both porter potties and bathrooms at the entrance of the beach. Water was calm, but had very red tide and didn't go in it as much unfortunately because of that. The seagulls were fine, didn't touch nobody's sandwich or anything. People were even bringing food by the nearby snack stand and they weren't even getting those! However, with my encounters with seagulls in the past, it is suggested to pack your sandwich in a plastic bag or aluminum foil, and take small bites to sort of guard the sandwich. Sand is easy to walk on and overall had a pleasant stay. read more

Beautiful, clean and the perfect spot to unwind. We drove up from Connecticut for the weekend and this is exactly why we needed to end our trip. The sand is so soft, bathrooms were cleaned and offers the perfect snack bar with a Del's lemonade stand nearby. The parking is probably the best set up I've seen thus far at any local beach I've been to. The location is great to, close to the mansions, cliff walk and many hotels and restaurants. Only thing I'd say to be weary of is the sneaky seagulls, they give zero you know what's! Guard your food and enjoy the peaceful sounds from the waves crashing onto the shore with the beautiful sights to be seen that surround the beach! read more

I went to Easton's Beach in Newport on Labor Day. I haven't been here in a few years. This is a pretty popular spot, for the locals and the not so locals. The beach is very clean and the sand is soft. There isn't any noticeable seaweed, and there are enough trash cans to dispose of your garbage. If you go for the cliff walk, you'll see this beautiful beach from another angle. Also it's nice knowing that this is the beach The Brakers Mansion overlooks. They have bathrooms, showers, changing rooms, lunch, all available on the beach. There is a substantial amount of parking available. It is $25.00 on weekends and $15.00 on weekdays. There is a discounted seasonal beach pass for residents of Newport. I have two complaints that are keeping Easton's Beach from being a five star beach experience. First, the seagulls are extremely aggressive. These birds are common around any beach I've ever been on in North America, I usually don't mind them at all. They have never given me any trouble. My mom was eating her sandwich, she brought from home, when this seagull, attempted to take it from her hand. It bit her on her finger, causing it to bleed, removing a large chunk of skin in the process. She was in pain for several days after. Also the seagulls will go into your bags looking for food, if you step away for a second. The other annoying thing about Easton's Beach is the unnecessary amount of announcements the lifeguards make on the loudspeakers. These are by no means life saving announcements. One of these ridiculous announcements is "attention, attention, there is no ball throwing or playing on the beach." Then again in 10 minutes. This is truly a beautiful beach, it is very easy to access and it's so clean. I wish the seagulls could behave, and if they would limit the announcements, it would easily be a 5 star beach! read more

Despite what the locals say ("...First Beach stinks") I had a wonderful day enjoying the beach views and great vibes of this spot. A wonderful snack bar with one of the best lobster rolls in town, great views of the cliff walk, expansive beach, and an easy parking situation. I brought an umbrella and a little beach mat and enjoyed the heck out of my day. Check warnings to ensure you're able to go into the water. When I was there it was pretty quiet as there was bacteria in the water making it not swimmable for guests. That was fine by me since I was planning to just relax on the sand anyways, but I can imagine it gets quite busy when that is not the case. Free admission on the beach, but you have to pay for parking. Free parking after 8pm and dogs allowed off season! I did see someone bring their dog on the beach at 3pm and no one said anything. Try to get here around noon for max sun. By 4pm it can start to get cold so bring a jacket. read more

Pretty small beach that's very close to the mansions of Newport. Visited 10/23/2021. I grew up in California so I'm used to Pacific beaches that seem to go on forever. This beach is fairly small as it's flanked by peninsulas covered by homes. As far as I could see, this beach only has paid parking. Not a beach for looking for shells as it is picked clean. Not much plant matter and no shade. Sand is comfortable to walk on barefoot but not so soft that it is difficult to wash off. No offensive smells (some beaches smell like putrid seaweed on the West Coast.) read more

The sand is super fine which you'd think is nice but as other reviews said, any puff of wind will have the sand blow all over you, especially if you're laying on your stomach. Parking is metered, and be careful your receipt doesn't blow into your vents! That happened to me but thankfully I retrieved it by jamming something small in there. Advisable to hold the receipt down with a pen or something on ur dash. So stupid that the showers (even the outdoor one to rinse off) are closed for "COVID". Additionally, the seaweed at low tide smells terrible. Cliff walk is right there, so I'd def recommend going for a walk! read more

Came on Jan. 1st 2022 to catch sight of/participate in the Polar Plunge. Water wasn't as cold as you'd imagine for this time of year but there was more algae than usual. I spent the 4th of July in Newport and on both days snagged street parking right in front of the beach... so that automatically made the morning off to an excellent start. Easy in/out plus metered parking is a lot more appealing than $35 lot parking any day, but especially during a holiday weekend. People were extremely respectful about distancing and the beach had markings for snack bar & bathroom queues, so that's a helpful reminder. Loveeeeeee that the Del's frozen lemonade truck was on site to make it a true Rhode Island summer - so refreshing. Pro tip: go as early as you can to grab a good spot (and parking spot) and beat the crowds! read more

I really wanted to do 5 stars because the beach is pretty desolate - compared to other nearby beaches that are packed. However if you stay on the left side it's very great- isolated. However the sewer smell is nauseating- it only lasts a few minutes but it's strong enough to kill ya! The water temperature is what drew me here multiple times this year. By 4th of July weekend it was around 70-72 degrees which was AMAZING. I can finally enjoy a beach trip with my son and take him in the water the ENTIRE time (as most young children prefer). The waves are a perfect size for young kids and they don't really go to high! Their are lifeguards on duty- but after 4/5pm they leave and one day we came here around 4pm and it was literally beautiful until the sun went down! The sand is also perfect for sculpting sand castles. My only two gripes are PARKING & the red seaweed. The red tide is kind of everywhere on this beach. It's passable and it kind of clumps in sections but if they were able to get rid of it this Beach would literally be PERFECT. The other issue is parking- the lots for the beach specifically get full quickly and the other lots are reserved for those who live in town. We ended up paying around $10-$15 to park at Tickets (a local restaurant) and it's like a 2-3 minute walk! Good deal! Otherwise one of my favorite beaches! Please Newport do something about the red tide/seaweed and we would literally come here every week! read more

There are great and not-so-great things about this beach! The great? It's quite large. It has a rental store/shop if you need to buy sunblock or towels or a shovel and pail or if you need to rent umbrellas or surfboards. (I rented an umbrella for $10 - they just keep your ID until you return it.) They also have a lobster shack. And it's good. This lobster shack was recommended to me by locals. It's popular, so it's great for people watching. Very soft sand. Right in town. The not-so-great? Parking is rough ($20 lots near the beach, otherwise you've got a walk - we did the Cliff Walk and then just continued to the beach which was quite convenient). It's very popular - it will be crowded in the high season. It's just not the most beautiful beach - very gray, lots of algae. My friend and I were visiting Providence and Newport for a weekend and spending a few hours on a beach was definitely on our list of to-dos. Not the best beach in the world or area, but I had a wonderful time there. Full disclosure though - I do not usually actually swim at the ocean, but prefer sitting in the sand and reading a book, which this beach was perfect for. There was a lot of red seaweed in the water and washing up onto the sand in areas. My mom thought the water smelled like motor oil, but I didn't notice it. The beach is very convenient if you're staying right in Newport or in the surrounding area. It was not overly crowded on a hot August weekday. Parking is $15 flat rate (during the week... not sure if rate changes on weekends). The parking lot is large enough that parking wasn't a problem - there was no need to make sure to get there early to guarantee a spot, there were adequate parking spaces at 10/11 am both days. Had indoor bath facilities that remained fairly clean throughout the day. There was also a snack bar on the beach, although I didn't try - Flo's Clamshack (along with some other places) are within walking distance so opted for that instead. Easton's Beach, a.k.a. First Beach, is Newport's only ocean beach, which surprises the heck out of me considering the amount of coastline the city holds. The large expanse of white sand beckons the passerby calling them into the public parking lot located close to the large amount of amenities offered by this beach. $10 for parking. . . $15 for a weekend pass. Worth the money, this beach is great. . . . for the sunbather. I say this because the water here is red, pure red tide. Ew ew ew. I'm not an ocean swimmer, so it doesn't affect me. But the disappointment voiced by most is enough to understand that, if you want to go swimming, don't come here. Lifeguards on duty have a sweet life, considering no one is willing to venture out into the ocean. They keep an eye on the waves and let patrons know where there is the "least" amount of seaweed. Carousel, banquet room, public bathrooms, showers, cheap bathhouse rentals, skate park, volleyball, and free concerts are some of the amenities to enjoy while at the beach. Snack bar available though I've never used it. Clean, relaxing beach with phenomenal views of cliff walk and the crashing waves. Never seems to be overcrowded, great location. A short drive away from downtown. Several tasty restaurants in the area including Flo's Clam Shack and the Atlantic Beach Club. Perfect for a day out in the sun for surf and sand. read more

Not my favorite beach on the island but it's still a great swimming spot. This is where ALL the tourists go. There's lots of room, life guards and if you get there earlier enough you'll find parking. The good thing is there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance if you want to take a break for lunch. This is convenient because the other beaches mostly just have food trucks. However, the water does smell at low tide because of the red seaweed. But it's a perfect central location for hikes and sunset drinks on the cliff. If you're looking main stream, go here. If you're looking for less people, go to second beach. read more

This is a beautiful beach in Newport. Relaxing and calming. Mansions and beautiful homes overlook the beach. You can walk on the Cliff Walk which takes you on a great path that is well manicured, and great views of the ocean and mansions. I went for a 20 minute walk and walked for about 90 minutes. It is just so gorgeous up there. The beach has great lifeguards, friendly parking attendants, clean bathrooms and showers. They rent chairs and umbrellas. Parking is unbelievably close to the beach. We went to Easton's Beach in mid-late July and it was overall a terrible experience. DON'T GET IN THE WATER! There was this red algae that got stuck in our bathing suits, hair, etc. as if that wasn't bad enough, there were tiny bugs living in the algae that starting biting us. Nice beach because of the snack shack and shower/changing area. The twin lobster roll deal is very nice and the del's lemonade truck (my favorite) was parked there! I've been to Gooseberry beach before which is a little further down the road and it's a lot nicer in my opinion. During our visit the red seaweed was there all weekend. In some parts it was more noticeable than others, but nonetheless it makes it unswimable in some areas so pick your beach spot wisely. The start of the cliff walk is also right there, so it if your short time and want to do the cliff walk and go to the beach then this is the perfect spot for you! Adequate amount of parking too. If you get there early enough there's even some metered spots. Towards the end of the beach we also walked by a place where you could rent surfboards which I though was pretty neat. read more

I wouldn't call myself a beach lover per se but this beach is great in my book! I've also been to Second beach a few times and I think prefer Easton even with the abundance of icky red seaweed. If you're lucky to find parking on the weekend you can enjoy the beach then rinse off and try the cliff walk about 10 minute walk away from the entrance. The snack bar is also a great draw for me since we got the twin lobsters for $18 and with fries. They also have a few other tasty options and food/beverage trucks (i.e. Del's). Near where the trucks park is a picnic seating area to relax and eat. Right above they also have a cool carousel that kids and families can enjoy! The beach and bathrooms are surprisingly clean at least when I went. They do have porta potties for when there's an influx of people. I might sound like a fuddy duddy but I do wish that the lifeguards or beach patrollers were more strict about people smoking! I spent an hour inhaling the flavored tobacco fumes from an oblivious beach bum's pipe. Overall if I was forced to go to a beach in New England I wouldn't mind coming back here! read more

Newport's only public beach, as far as I'm aware. Coming from Jersey where it costs up to $20 just to park, plus an extra $7 and up to get on most beaches, I was elated to see free admission to the beach and only $10 to park. The sand here is fine. So fine that you can expect to be covered in it on a windy day, so brace yourself. If you want to attempt to keep the sand out of your eyes and mouth, venture down to the wet sand closer to the water. read more

This beach is so serene and well kept. The view coming in from Thames St is simply amazing. The smell of salt water fills the air, and the tinted red waves is a sight to see. I was told that the waves have a red tint on the shore, because of the algae. One thing that caught me off guard was the $10 parking fee. It was either that or metered parking. There seemed to only be 15 meters, so snooze you lose. I wasn't too bothered by the $10 because we had such a good time there. We didn't get in the water, but being next time Cliff Walk and the Aquarium was perfect. Put this on your list if you visit Newport, RI. read more

Lovely beach. Red seaweed making it look like a whale died? Not so lovely. I got discouraged and thought that it was red tide - its just red seaweed that's stinky. If it was red tide, the beach would have been closed perhaps. The area that we camped at on the beach was busy and had a volleyball tourny going on. Not my ideal cuppa tea for a beach. However, if you walk aways down toward the Cliff Walk, the waters are much cleaner and that end of the beach is a lot quieter as well. It's a good spot to get a decent tan. If you want peace and quiet, be mindful about where you want to set your beach towels. read more

Newport is a beautiful city! We chose Easton Beach since it had ample parking, snack shop, carousel and bathrooms with changing areas all in one centralized area. We also wanted to see the mansions near by. Cliff walk is right by the beach. The water was warm at this time of the year. There were red seaweed, but, not too bad. The waves were calm. But, it was very windy, which blew the fine sand all over the place. Speaking of sand, it was clean and nice. Perfect for the kids to build sandcastles. Parking was $10 (weekday). Not crowded at all since we came on a weekday and I believe school started already. Bathrooms were clean. Snack shop was great! Lobster roll! That's all I have to say. LOL read more

This beach can be polarizing as some people will love it and some people will hate it. I'll start with the Pro's 1. In Newport! 2. Sand is super soft. Great for kids making sandcastles. 3. View is nice and you really don't have to walk all too far from the parking lot. 4. Has other activities that you can do like the children's carousel (50 cents per ride) and the small aquarium (only good for about 1 hours of diversion for the kids). 5. Entertaining Seagulls! They go through other people's stuff. And you can laugh at them for their stupidity for leaving food out in the open. Con's 1. In Newport! Traffic can be bad when you are leaving. 2. Yes the red sea weed can be quite bothersome. Walk towards Middletown side of the beach. It is much better. Towards Cliffwalk it can be horrific. 3. Seagulls! Its entertaining to watch when they are going through other people's stuff and snatching other people's food but when you are on the receiving end its not so much fun. The seagulls are pretty aggressive. I had one swoop down and eat my lobster roll. 4. They claim to have a BBQ area. I have been to the beach like 20 times and have never seen it. 5. The city recently re did the play ground but they did not do a good job with it. Previously it was a traditional playground with swings, jungle gym and other activities. When they did the update they ripped everything out and put some synthetic rocks up. Kids will be bored with it after 10 minutes. They should put back the previous playground. Overall I like the beach. If you are heading to Newport because you want a Beach Vacation well then you will be disappointed. Go somewhere else. If you are in Newport and then happen to be at the beach you might be pleasantly surprised. Its a good place to spend a few hours with the kids. Starting around 3-4pm winds start picking up pretty steadily causing it to be a bit chilly. Even during the middle of summer. Family's with kids will be better going towards 10:30-11:00. Nice beach, close to the road so it's kind of noisy from traffic. It's gets crowded! Get there early and find a spot. There's a little shack and you can get the best lobster roll in rhode island! The sand is white and soft! Parking is difficult to find, so again, get there early. It's like $20 or so to park in the lot. You can't have glass, which is obvious because it's a beach, but you can have containers. SEA GULLS ARE INSANE. Hide your food in a cooler from them or when you're laying out, they will come right to your bag and eat. I speak from experience! It scared the hell out of me! read more
