Owned by the same entrepreneur as Coco's and Kasbar, this place is a huge disappointment. Despite…read morereading some lukewarm-at-best reviews on Daily Info, we decided to give them a try on a busy Friday night. We knew we were in trouble when the harried, disorganized staff relied on the manager's memory to keep track of the waiting list. The ambiance at OOBC is a bit Modern Fred Flintstone, with half the place dedicated to a mostly empty lounge consisting of harsh-on-your-bottom curved cement benches around some wooden stumps set up as stools and tables. It's the kind of setting that could be really hip and cool when filled with people, or when empty like this night, weird and uncomfortable. They need more cushions here and maybe some hanging fabric to dampen the echos. In contrast to the empty uncomfortable lounge, the left half of the place was overly crowded by long tables placed too close together. You know they're too close together because the staff are constantly shoving your chair out of the way to serve others. Because the decor is so sparse, sound bounced everywhere, and it was very hard to talk because of the noise. They really need more soft furnishings to deaden the noise and make it feel more comfortable. Basically, months after this place opened, they still have not figured out how to use the space effectively. As for the service, the poor management of the waiting list was only the beginning of the chaos. When we were finally seated after a long wait, we were served by a confused staff of three different waitresses. At two different points in the evening, they served us coffees meant for other tables, and they seemed to be CONSTANTLY interrupting our conversation in order to collect empty glasses. I don't know if they're short on glassware or just wanted to seem attentive, but it was really ridiculous for them to constantly interrupt. As for the food, they did serve tasty burgers. I had the Mexican Ali, which to my Californian ears sounds like a strange name. I would have named it Mexicali or Mexican not sure what the heck an Ali is. Muhhamed Ali? The meat turned out uneven, with one half very pink and the other side very cooked. It was tasty enough, but I'm not sure it was worth the 9.50. So we won't be back at this place in a hurry. I still enjoy Coco's and Kasbar but they clearly haven't figured out how to run an organic burger place yet.

With that said, if you can manage to keep yourself from going into complete sensory overload, be sure to stop by Alpha Bar! It is even the self-proclaimed "hottest spot in Oxford!" The salad boxes are the greatest inventions ever. Basically it's 3.30 pounds for 3 choices of salad and 1 "main." If you are one of those people that don't like it when their food touches others (believe me, I didn't know there was those kinds of people out there either), then you may be freaked out because all your entrees go into the same container. I like it though because all of the flavors actually go well when mixed together. My salad recommendations: (I guess I haven't been too adventurous, my apologies, chap) FAVA BEANS: never heard of fava beans before but they are a huge meaty bean with huge flavor. The tomato sauce (?) that they use makes these beans irresistable... i can't really describe to you what the sauce is, you'll just have to try it for yourself! WIN COUS COUS: a bit mushy but love this! fine grained cous cous for fine people. Definitely goes well being mixed with everything else. CHICK PEAS: i LOVE CHICK PEAS. the end. For the mains: ROASTED VEGGIES: okay so it's basically just sweet potatoes, butternut squash and onions but THOSE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITE "VEGGIES" and they are so soft and tender... delicious TOFU: marinated in a shoyu/ginger sauce. Nothing special but hey it's tofu, which I love. HALUMI: cheeeeeeeese, I love thee. Get it grilled! According to Angela W: Coleslaw, meh Lentils, good. A little bit vinegary but still tasty nonetheless. Definitely come early because one time I got there around 1:45 and there weren't many options left. The line gets CRAZY long at peak hours! So basically, when I stare into the glass window separating me from all these tasties, I want to sample everything. I drool. But I refrain because we're in the UK, Oxford to be exact, and everyone is proper. But Alpha Bar, you're the best! Thanks.

The salads are value for money, if you are fine with low protein intake. Salad options are fantastic and well marinated. As of July 2018, they go for 5 pounds a small box with one protein option and 2 salad sides, and 7 for a large one with two protein options and 3 salad sides.
