We did a family vacation to South Padre Island in July 2032 and after calling a number of tours…read morethat were booked that day we were able to get a charter with Captain Red Beards. Captain Brandon was easy to communicate with via text and his pricing was very reasonable for two families (6 guests total). While we had a great time and Captain Brandon was highly informative and made sure our two 5 year olds had a blast, i was VERY disappointed in the boat that we had. On the website the photos show a newer boat with "leather" seats and fancy blue lighting. When we got there there were old lawn chairs/patio furniture for seating. This was definitely not my type of accommodations but we had already promised the kids so I tried to keep an open mind. I'm so glad I did because it really was the highlight of the trip as we got to see a few different dolphins and Brandon was kind enough to provide us with restaurant recommendations (which ended up being awesome) and he let the kids drive the boat. Outside of the old boat with the bootlegged seating, I would recommend Captain Red Beards. (Suggestion: update your website photos so people know what they are getting and they can make a fully informed decision prior to booking).

Loved snorkeling! This was our first time to go with a chartered tour. We were on a family trip…read moreto S. Padre and a few of us decided to book the snorkeling trip. We saw quite a few neat fish and the ride out was smooth. A couple of things I felt could be improved... the equipment provided to some of us was in bad shape. The tube I was given to use was exactly what you can purchase in the pool toys at Walmart and the mouth piece was chewed so badly there was almost nothing left to it. That was pretty disgusting. If I were to go again I'd bring my own. Being our first time we assumed they'd have professional equipment better than we could provide ourselves. While most of the staff were pretty friendly.. the young dark haired guide in charge of providing the instructions and setting the boundaries was just not pleasant at all. He was almost scolding when giving instructions and just very unfriendly to the patrons. Definitely felt like we were a bother to him. I would certainly never book a scuba lesson or tour if he were the instructor. Maybe he was still learning and it was nerves? To end this on a more positive note ... they take safety seriously and they also provide you eco friendly packets of fish food which was really neat!

We booked our appt. Cost was $80.00 per person. We were thrilled! We arrived joked around with the guys who would be taking us out. We got into the boat that would take us out to the dock in the middle of the water, this is the only company who does this from a dock not the back of a boat. MUCH SMOTHER. We got all hooked up! My hubby went first, loved it, I was next never having done this IT WAS PERFECT about 500 feet in the air. The guys took great care of us. The owner of this company was the tow boat driver. Never felt unsafe, if I hada child who wished to do this I would use this company. Great service.

The guide gave us instructions, took us out to the riding area and then just kept an eye on us for our safety. We could do pretty much what we wanted as long as we stayed within the prescribed and marked riding area in the bay. I marked it down from 5 stars to 4 mostly because our rental was to start at 10am but we didn't start until about 10:45. But I believe the reason for being late was the customers on the tour before us more than the guides. I'd recommend them. We had fun and felt safe. The jet ski we had was really fast, stable, comfortable and well maintained.

I always wondered why not further south? I think it just meant more driving for my dad. Lol. This resort town is incredibly laid back. If you're searching for upscale dining and shopping, go elsewhere. Head to Dallas! Lol. The people are mostly friendly. The beaches weren't pristinely clean, but most areas we went to were not waste-ridden. These waters were very calm and soothing when we were here in late May 2025. There is tar, but not to the extent that Kaitlyn B. complained about in her Jun 1, 2025 review. Not in my experience. If it gets on your skin, use an old wash rag or a paper towel and baby oil. Clothes are a little tougher. Just don't put them in the dryer because the stains will set even deeper. In the area that I can recommend for nature lovers: + Butterfly Garden + Isla Blanca Park + Sea Turtle Inc. + Whaling Wall + Bonus: Sea Shell Beach (so many shells + free parking, but no restrooms!) Take the State Park Rd 100 (aka Ocean Blvd) all the way north past the South Padre Island Convention Center. You can't miss it. The road ends. Don't be scared. Be cautious of standing water and lots of sand in the roadway, though. Be adventurous, have fun, and please manage your damn trash properly & dispose of it when you go back into town!

Our experience with Breakaway Cruises was terrible and completely unprofessional…read more We arrived at 2:00 PM to schedule and pay for a 4:00 PM jet ski reservation for three jet skis for our group of six. We spent about 20 minutes completing paperwork and talking with Coral, who told us to be back by 3:45 PM. We left to change and returned at 3:35 PM, ready for our ride. Instead, Coral told us the 3:00 PM group had "just arrived late" and we'd now have to wait until 5:00 PM. That's completely unacceptable. Even if her story was true and they really were the 3:00 PM group, they were late. Breakaway Cruises should have canceled or delayed them--not us, who showed up on time and followed every instruction. On top of that, I overheard Coral speaking with the other group, and it didn't sound like they were late at all. It felt more like Breakaway Cruises was overbooking to make extra money and shifting people around to cover it up. I even heard Coral asking another group whether they had evening plans--more evidence of double-booking (her knowing they would make them wait past their scheduled time). We asked Coral to let us go as scheduled or cancel the other party. She claimed to agree with us but did nothing. She refused to let us speak with a manager. Instead, she offered us "inventory" jet skis that had been sitting in storage. Why should we get older, potentially less safe equipment when we did everything right? The other group should have been inconvenienced, not us (that is if they were really "late"). We ultimately left without riding because we didn't feel safe using equipment that might not have been recently serviced. Breakaway Cruises clearly doesn't care about customers' time, safety, or money. They're unethical, careless, and willing to lie or overbook to boost profits. I would absolutely not recommend them.

She gave me a form to fill out but it had someone else's full information on it, including their ID. That's a huge privacy issue. I asked when I first got there what the requirements were for riding a jet ski and she told me there were no hidden fees. After waiting around 40 minutes and filling out everything, she suddenly tells us we need a boating permit that costs another 10 to 15 dollars. That should have been mentioned from the start. Overall a really unprofessional experience. I wouldn't come back or recommend this place to anyone.
