The lodge is off the river and only blocks from downtown. It allows everything (or a lot at least) to be within walking distance. I highly recommend this place for a place to stay. Having said that, you can imagine how hard it would be to turn that mood around, however, this hotel did it. The young woman at the front desk was a delight. Super sweet and friendly and I'm fired for not getting her name! She helped us look for somewhere that replaces tires open on a Sunday which was nearly an impossible feat- until she found us the Walmart super center with auto care! The room itself was clean, cozy and spacious. Shower was great, parking was a breeze and if we had had more time we would've hit up the bar downstairs that was serving Founders (our favorite Michigan beer!) This unexpected spot is now in my list of places to stay again in the future. Will happily return in the future!

I specifically called the day before to prepay for our room for the two nights we would be staying here because I didn't know what time I was actually going to arrive due to my work schedule. The attendant Dan that greeted us was very rude and was actually laughing as he stated he was the one that gave our room away. Our only resolution that was offered was for us to stand around and wait for the manager to arrive. We opted to leave for the time being and as we were leaving the attendant Dan sarcastically told us to have a nice day while he laughed at us. In fairness to Best Western, I'm sure the hotel normally has good kind service with the exception of Dan. We feel that we were completely disrespected and are going to file a grievance with Corporate Best Western regarding Dans behavior. Dan is fortunate that we are level headed consumers, I could see him crossing the path of someone who might physically harm him in the future if he ever behaves like he did towards us.

I had 5 kids with me so if you were going to get crabby with a guest - it should've been me. One kid spilled an entire glass of apple juice everywhere ... then knocked ALL the utensils on the floor at breakfast (like 100 spoons, etc). The girl working the front desk was also manning the breakfast area, and she just pleasantly helped me clean it up with no issue. I will definitely stay in this location again.

The reason this was an issue was we were already told we could swim and the employee had an extremely rude attitude. If we had known that kids could not swim after 11 we wouldn't have even bothered using the pool facilities.

The Mansion is beautiful, a real mix of old and new.. so you get history.. but still really nice bathrooms and big bedrooms It's about three blocks further than the other highly rated one in town and well worth the extra travel. We were greeted by our gracious hosts, Tom and Sandy. We made it just in time for the afternoon snack.. you know.. wine, cheese etc... with time to enjoy the large veranda. In fact, we were there for three nights and made extensive use of the veranda.. at breakfast, in the afternoon and in the evening. Tom and Sandy are good about seating you with people that are a good match.. or if you prefer.. alone.. there is plenty of space. You can even have food delivered to your room. We played croquet on the grounds (yes, they have ample parking, gorgeous landscaping, a fountain and a place to play croquet) it was fun, but when my wife kept beating me I decided it was time to try something else. (I grew up in the city, what do I know about croquet?) Back to the breakfast thing.. one day the whole area suffered a power outage so they fired up the grill and cooked us our breakfast. No big deal, it was excellent. We stayed in the Joseph room, but were able to view all except one and they were all very nice. We had a King sized bed (super comfortable) and an oversized bathroom.. a big tub with jets and a shower that I needed the instructions (laminated) to use.. so many sprayers. I would categorize this more like an air bnb since there was no front desk concierge or turn down service and you are given a keycode access at check in time. The room/space was adorable with a full kitchen, bathroom, and good amount of seating (think well designed studio apartment). There is a coffee shop located in the main floor below the hotel and also- Red Bench is like 3 doors down. Highly recommend for guests when they come into town or a Lil' getaway for a couple or small family!

Very lovely room and very clean and comfortable. Downtown Excelsior is a fun area to check out with plenty of great restaurants and the lakes are nearby.
