Never in my life have I experienced such amazing care from an ob/gyn. I do not go on yelp to give reviews, whether good or bad. This is the first time ever. I had an appointment today with Dr. Shackelford. I've worked with a good amount of doctors, including ob/gyn's. He was above and beyond. Very knowledgeable. Kind. Fantastic bedside manner. AND I have never ever in my life had a Pap smear that wasn't uncomfortable or painful. I barely knew he was doing an exam on me. It was quick and painless, but still felt thorough I hope this man never stops taking care of women. If you are concerned with anything, please go to this doctor. The staff is wonderful as well. Very nice. I got seen quite quickly which is such a shock. Please please please get regular screening with all of your anatomy. Just because you're young, doesn't mean it won't happen to you. I've seen way too many 30 year olds getting diagnosed with lung, breast, ovarian, colon, and skin cancer. It's scary how much is going on out there. Keep yourself safe. read more

My issue was not with Monica my issue was with Jan..... when I had my first son she delivered him four years ago so when I have returned on 2015 she's like oh you back so soon is this by the same person....really like just because I'm black I have different baby daddies not to mention she saw my engagement ring. So then she proceeded to ask what our professions are and want informing her of my bachelors degree and soon to be a masters degree she calm down but I also requested to never see her again because she can't and a good day And that was her last time for her disrespect... read more

Dr. Monica Newby is the best! She helped me through a complicated pregnancy and is always very calm and professional. Her staff as well, the nurses are sweethearts. I live an hour away and it is worth the drive for the quality and professionalism this office provides. I have been to my share of awful women's doctors, this place is a keeper! read more

The doctor I seen was wonderful and caring.i wouldn't go anywhere else.i got great help and everyone there were friendly

After a rather humiliating and disrespectful visit with midwife Monica Newby yesterday morning I've not only decided to leave the practice but my husband and I are leaving the state and heading back North. Ms. Newby not only insisted that I receive another Syphilis and HIV test but she threatened me with NC Public Health Law and said there could be issues if I didn't consent. I asked her what the reason was for a repeat of these tests and she said "In my some odd years of practicing I've had many women sit here and assume that something wasn't going on and then test positive. I assure you I'm not singling you out for any particular reason." My husband and I sat there dumbfounded and he was visibly disrespected. I HIGHLY doubt she says this to her other patients. I reluctantly complied to the blood test because the last thing my brown ass needs is for them to report me for "not doing what's best" for my baby. To make matters worse she calls us back into the room after the lab work and mentions my weight gain. She asked if I was currently seeing a Nutritionist and I said yes I am and that I have things under control. (Because I do. My BP is great every visit. my BG is great, I just feel great!) She then asks if I drink sugary beverages to which I answered no, because I don't drink sugary beverages. She then further pushes the issue and asks "No kool aid, sweet teas etc?" to which at that point I give her a stern no and begin to leave the room. Disrespectful, discriminatory and rude. I am glad it was the first and last time I will be seeing her face. My doula is thoroughly embarrassed that she recommended this midwife to me and states that her other patients whom are, of course, white are NOT being treated this way. Shameful. Oh by the way NC Public Health Law states that a patient should be OFFERED these STD tests during their first and third trimesters. Nowhere does it state that they are mandatory and that the patient faces consequences for not consenting to them. Humiliating. read more

I just had the worst women's health care experience of my life with Dr. Parker at ECU Women's Physicians on Herbert Ct. Absolutely mortifying and humiliating experience. After a couple of months of suffering from inter-period and unexplained bleeding while having been on birth control pills for the last decade I went to ECU. Dr. Parker tried to convince me that I'm taking my birth control wrong and that is what's causing break through bleeding despite a decade of successful birth control usage. Her explanation was that basically my periods aren't lining up with when the pill says I should be bleeding. I don't know how that explains having two periods in one month. When I asked if this could be something more serious like endometrial hyperplasia since my mother had that when she was my age, Dr. Parker dismissed that saying I was 'too skinny for that' and the birth control I'm taking would prevent that from occurring. My mother was the same weight as I am now when she suffered with endometrial hyperplasia. I was mortified when Dr. Parker very loudly asked how big my uterus is within earshot of other patients. Her thing about uterus size seemed centered on it being more likely to have fibroids if one has a larger uterus. And less likely if you don't? How would I know the size of my uterus? I have never been pregnant and my husband and I are not quite ready to start a family. When I told her I wanted options to birth control pills, she wanted to know how I was going to keep from getting pregnant. That was what I was hoping she would advise. The only option she would talk about was an IUD and she dismissed it saying it's painful to insert. Wasn't that my decision? She got increasingly annoyed the whole time she was with me. She seemed very put out by my inquiries. She wouldn't even have given me a pelvic examination me if I hadn't repeatedly asked 'what if it's fibroids or a cyst.' 'I had to practically beg for a pelvic exam and she was not thorough at all. She said she didn't see any blood and that was it. No PAP smear, no tissue samples. I felt she was grossly negligent and incompetent. So without testing for any physiological reasons for continual breakout bleeding, even after I brought my planner with the days marked that I had been bleeding, she recommended that I continue taking my birth control until I could pick up a prescription for one of those have-a-period-every-three months kind of birth control. So now I was supposed to go from one kind of birth control pill to another without exploring the root cause of my problem. To add insult to injury, when I mentioned the sudden weight gain I had recently experienced, she looked at me and said 'you're 30 this year, women gain 10 pounds a decade.' Seriously?! And she is a doctor?! She had complete disregard for me and my health. read more
