You know, the clothing…read moreitem that seemed so cute on paper, but when it came back from the Asian factory, real and three-dimensional, everyone standing around as it was taken out of the box just said, "Whoops." And then they sent it directly to the outlet mall. There are some items like that at the Columbia store. Odd colors, designs you can't picture being sold at full retail. For example, pairs of plaid shorts, in bright summery colors with matching tops, that came down to the knee in form-fitting fashion -- they were essentially hot pants. I have to ask, what were these doing at a sporting-goods store? I can't imagine them selling well to Columbia's target market. But, there are also plenty of items that fit more squarely within the Columbia brand. Such as, a white linen shirt with button-up sleeves, perfect for lightweight sun protection on the water or when camping; and a pair of nylon shorts for whitewater rafting (when they won't let you wear cotton on the river). There are plenty of "quirky" items -- normal Columbia items such as warm winter coats, in slightly odd colors that obviously didn't sell well. For instance, I got a really nice sun hat for $6 (I think the original price was like $40). Even better if it's your favorite color -- this one was purple! I did not check out the shoe selection but they do have them. All sorts of camping gear as well. Like most outlet stores, you may not find exactly what you're looking for at this one, but you will find plenty that you weren't looking for -- and sometimes that's the best part.

The selection at the Crocs Outlet is outstanding. They have all colors and varieties. The prices were roughy $5 less per pair than you'd pay elsewhere. That said, they did also have a buy two get two free deal going on when were there as well. (we were just wanting 1 pair, so we saved about $5 than normal retail prices) They also had all sorts of charms to personalize your crocs. While they did have a myriad of colors and styles (including plenty of my son's desired lined Crocs), their selections of sizes in any given color was extremely limited. We asked and they said they were pretty much a what you see is what you get shop (ie: no big stores of sock in back). We found a few different colors that my son would have liked but ended up having to opt for basic black because we couldn't find his size in other colors. That said, I couldn't find his size in the other colors online either--so maybe a bit of a shortage overall? The service was friendly and efficient. All in all a solid experience and we left with a pair in hand!

We like supporting Goodwill, as purchases and donations there fund job training for persons with disabilities and disadvantages. We're also trying, though not always successfully, to be more minimalist and to buy more used for environmental reasons. The store is large, organized, well-lit, and most of the prices are quite good. There are many fitting rooms, and clean restrooms. My husband and I each had some "finds" in this store. For my husband, his best purchase was a Kelty self-inflating sleeping pad. We're doing some camping, and his current pad had developed a leak in the valve casing which he hasn't been able to fix yet. The pad at Goodwill was marked $12.99 but, because it was a "yellow tag", it was marked down 50% to $6.50. He also picked up two name-brand (LL Bean; Nike) hoodies ($9.99 each) and exercise pants ($6.99). All are in great condition. As for me, my best finds were in the hiking shoes category. I found two pairs of name-brand (Keen, Clarks) shoes in great condition, and at great prices ($14.99 and $6.99, respectively). I also picked up a hiking shirt ($2.99, yellow tag) and some office supplies. Check-out was a breeze, with a very friendly cashier. He told us about special promotions. (May, 2023). If you join their points program, you earn 1 point for every dollar spent. 100 points gets you a $5 off coupon. There are mark-down days for Veterans on Tuesdays and Seniors 60+ on Wednesdays. There are also discounts on one's birthday. We also noted many staff on the floor -- putting out new items and arranging shelves. Great job, Goodwill!

Being a "larger" gentleman, I appreciate that they stock extended sizes. My most recent visit to this store came about two weeks after a visit to the Pleasant Prairie outlet. The workers at this store were much nicer, and the store was much more organized. You know how on the racks for men's pants, they have those rings with the waist size? At this store, the 38" pants are actually in the 38" section! So are the 40" waist pants! Imagine that, you almost never see that. I scored some really nice button-down sports shirts for summer here for less than $20 each. Totally what I was looking for at a great price! dress-pants or suit separate pants can usually be found in the $30-40 range. Just be careful that there are also "non-clearance" items on offer. You may think you are getting a great deal, but a pair of boring khaki shorts should never cost over $40 "on-clearance". In general, Van Heusen is my go-to for middle-aged white-guy business-casual clothes to wear at the office. Hoo-ray!
