I use this location often mostly to ship eBay items and although I feel the USPS shipping cost are ridiculous this isn't the fault of the staff and they do always try and provide options to save me money when possible and they never fail to provide a tracking receipt and thank me for stopping in. The concept of having mail service still operating like it has since its inception seems to be archaic and wasteful so I feel it should be privatized but that's another conversation. In my opinion anytime a business of any type operates without accountability and has unlimited funding this is what it looks like, I can't think of a better example of a failed system but today still necessary. It must have been some terrible conditions that these men, as well as the beasts, had to endure. Remember, Florida was swampy and especially before air conditioning, was very inhospitable. This sign, located at the equestrian trail of the Little Big Econ State Forest, is a wonderful reminder of Florida's past and to the brave men and women who sought their fortune and a better life in the Palmetto Prarie.

Founded in the 1870s and named after pioneer Casper Neil Mims, Mims is an unincorporated community…read morein Brevard County that grew into a thriving citrus and timber center following the arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway in the 1880s. The community also holds a significant place in American history as the home of pioneering NAACP activists Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore. While visiting Mims, I came across this blue historical marker, part of Florida's Historical Marker Program, one of the Division of Historical Resources' most recognized public history initiatives. These markers commemorate significant people, places, and events throughout the state and can be found along roadways, at archaeological sites, battlefields, cemeteries, colleges, historic districts, schools, and churches. Historical Marker F-408 was erected in 1999 by the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners and the Florida Department of State. The marker stands on the site of the former home of educators and civil rights activists Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore. Both were teachers in Brevard County, Harry served as a principal, while Harriette taught sixth grade before later becoming an insurance broker. Harry was eventually dismissed by the school board because of his activism and efforts to organize for equal pay. In 1937, with assistance from Thurgood Marshall, Harry Moore filed the first lawsuit in the South seeking equal salaries for Black and white teachers. Following his dismissal, Moore became a full-time civil rights activist with the NAACP. He organized the Progressive Voters League of Florida, leading voter registration campaigns that helped register 31 percent of Florida's eligible Black voters by 1950. In 1934, he founded the first Brevard County branch of the NAACP and served as its president for five years. From 1941 to 1946, he was president of the Florida State Conference of NAACP Branches before becoming its executive director, a position he held until his death. On Christmas night in 1951, also the Moores' 25th wedding anniversary, a bomb planted beneath their bedroom by members of the Ku Klux Klan exploded, killing the couple. Harry Moore died that night, and Harriette succumbed to her injuries nine days later. Their murders were the first assassinations of civil rights activists during the modern Civil Rights Movement and the only instance in which a husband and wife were both killed in the movement. Five separate criminal investigations later uncovered evidence implicating four suspects in the bombing, but no arrests were ever made. In 1999, the Moore homesite was designated a Florida Heritage Landmark. Five years later, Brevard County dedicated the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park and Interpretive Center, where visitors can learn more about their lives and legacy. The site also features a full-scale recreation of the Moores' home, so we can all remember their sacrifice and lasting impact on the struggle for civil rights.

Although a little off the beaten path I have driven through this neighborhood a number of times and today I decided to stop and take a closer look. It's relatively easy to find but one should obey the speed limit and show some respect. Located in the middle of the street on a tiny tree and flower filled dirt island on Canova Drive in New Smyrna Beach, the memorial is dedicated to Charles Dummett, a teenager who died in 1860. The Historic Account The son of Douglas D. Dummett, a landowner, and Leandra "Anna" Fernandez, Charles Dummett died when he was just 15 years old. While the exact cause of his death remains a mystery, most accounts attribute it to a hunting accident. The elder Dummett was said to be so saddened by the loss of his son that he built the young man's grave right where his body was found. It's remained there ever since. In the 1950s, developers who were working in the area decided to build a road around the memorial instead of embarking on the long legal process of getting permission to move it. According to a 2019 article in the Daytona Beach News Journal, an anonymous artist added a statue of a dog to the gravesite and on most days there are still fresh flowers laid on the tomb...

Sawmills ghosts and…read morebank vaults Osceola is a true ghost town. Actually not a town at all anymore and I'm not sure about the ghosts, but at one time it certainly was a town and quite a nice one at that. Groups of people have gathered at this location for a long time. The Seminoles had a huge camp at this location by the St. Johns River and various other groups made small settlements here over the centuries. But then in 1916 the Osceola Cypress Company decided that this would be the perfect place for a huge sawmill. Of course a town grew around the sawmill and pretty soon the over 350 acres along the St Johns River was an official town. Lots of houses, a school, church, doctors, bars and of course the huge sawmill. The growing and thriving town even had a bank. People predicted that Osceola might become the largest and most prosperous town in all of Seminole County. A wonderful place to live and work. But fate had other plans. In 1939 the Osceola Cypress Company suddenly decided they could get cheaper labor and better trees in other places and moved away. Of course the end of the sawmill meant the end of the town and the entire town was moved or dismantled. Today the only thing that remains of the town is a huge old bank vault and if you look hard through the thick under bush, some bricks, stones and pieces of rusty metal. Osceola had it's brief period of fun and prosperity but then disappeared as suddenly as it exploded into existence. Nothing left now but an huge old bank vault, perhaps some ghosts and a whole lot of memories.
