A fun spot for beginners to climbing -- I've never been bouldering before and had a really great time. The staff are super patient and answered any and all questions I had. They have two levels, with the downstairs having some belaying and bouldering walls and upstairs with the overhangs. I thought that the V0 and V1 (beginner) routes provided just the right amount of challenge without being discouraging. They had tons of these with super clear markings on the wall to follow! A very friendly first-time learning environment that was much less crowded than SBP. read more

For a climbing gym in Seattle, this place is amazing! It has a great mix of bouldering, top rope and lead climbing. I never feel like it's INSANELY packed espcecially on weekends. There is NOBODY there. Climbing outside it way fun! If the staff sees that it isn't going to rain, they set up the top rope routes outside, but if there is a chance of rain, they only make the outside available to those who lead climb. The lead climb certification process is smooth and worker staff here are so nice! Every month I pay $141 all together for me and my wife. This isnt a terrible price at all for where we live and all that you get at this gym. Come try it out and enjoy your time! read more

Good spot for bouldering and top rope if you're in the area! Even though SG Seattle is pretty small compared to the other climbing gyms, I really enjoy their problems and routes. Specifically, the construction and feel of the wall isn't so cookie cutter and the setters do a great job of creating interesting problems that require more than just strength. Toprope here feels more realistic since the ropes aren't double looped at the top. Bouldering in the overhang area can be tricky if there's a lot of people because the limited room forces everyone to cluster in the middle of the space. Also, during the busy times, the haze of chalk particles gets pretty heavy. Parking can be difficult to find since the parking lot in front is shared with other businesses and getting to the spaces behind the building feels like a video game because you're constantly trying to avoid gigantic potholes. read more

If you are a boulderer ... this is YOUR gym! Perfectly set routes for all levels. Not to mention a TON of routes to figure out. I was here climbing nonstop for about two and half hours and I never even got close to trying everything in my level. This is a great beginner's gym as I have noticed V0's on almost every wall. There are also great challenging routes that are well thought out and strategically set. Based on the dates on the cards, the routes seem to be changing quite frequently as well. Couple of restroom facilities in the gym as well as one that has a shower. There is also a full-service gym with a stair master, bike, free weights, bow flex system, stability discs, etc, which is located toward the back in a separate room. The front desk staff members were all very courteous, friendly, and attentive. Even the fellow climbers were really open and friendly in this gym (maybe I've just gotten used to the LA "mind your own business" persona). All I have to say is that I wish I lived in Seattle so I can come here everyday whether to climb or just to do some workouts in the gym. Will definitely be making a visit here anytime I am in Seattle again. read more

This is by far, the worst climbing gym in the area, I already dislike climbing gyms, but this just takes my dislike to the next level. Let me just list a few things that makes this place terrible. * no changing rooms or shower * short walls * terrible air quality * horrendous parking * crowded (I mean that's every gym, but because it's so small, it's particularly bad) * crappy routes The only upside is the staff is pretty nice, and at least there's some semblance of safety in place - unlike Cliff Hanger's in San Diego (which is by far the worst climbing gym I've been to, and trust me, that's pretty bad, 'cause I have been to at least 30 of them around the country)... Stone Gardens Seattle isn't much better though, it comes as the second worst. Bleh. read more

I have recently discovered that A. I love bouldering B. I love top-roping C. I am extremely over-confident in my abilities as a climber and D. Really thankful for crash pads Stone Gardens is a great place to climb, especially in the mornings (if you haven't had too much to drink the night before and can actually roll out of bed to go early in the am), even though it smells like stinky balls. The only downsides are 1. if you try to go after work you're hard pressed to find a free rope or wall and 2. They need to take better care of their features, as there always seem to be a few that are either loose, falling off, or taped over. read more

This place is awesome. A day pass is about $15 but I got in free since Jenny has a membership and a member can take anyone who's never been before for free. Renting shoes was a measly $4 or so. Unfortunately, the shoes had a tag on the inside that dug into the back of my heel and hurt after an hour or so. Alex had the same problem. Nobody in our group had the ability to belay, so we just did bouldering (which I actually prefer). It was so awesome! Stone Gardens has walls and walls full of tons of different problems. I could (and did) spend hours there. After a while I hurt all over from all the unique stretches I was doing. Don't tell Alex, but I think I might have ended up cheating on the last V1 that I completed. There's lots of VB's and V0's for beginners, but there's even quite a few V5's, V6's, and V7's. Basically, this is an awesome indoor climbing place no matter what your skill level! I am so getting a membership. read more

This used to be the best gym in town, but now that there are no autobelays and the rope climb grades are all over the place, it's not the greatest anymore. The new TVs all over the place to basically show Instagram reels and marketing stuff are a waste when what climbers really want is the ability to enjoy climbing, with or without partners. Classes often take up a ton of space now more than ever, too, which is a total bummer after getting used to having use of the whole gym without classes interfering with space use during covid reservation times. I miss the days of Stone Gardens, when the membership price was reasonable, autobelays were present, and it was known as the gym for the real climbers in town. read more

This indoor rock climbing place is a good place to work out during the winter. There are many walls of different levels that you can climb. If you are not experienced, you can also sign up for some classes there. They have 2 main sections that you can use (non-ropes) and ropes...so you can choose to climb however way you like! Stone Gardens $16 for a day's free-climb pass and there are some rock climbing shoes that you can rent if you don't have your own already. I was there with a friend and 2 hours were enough for me to know that I enjoyed rock climbing but probably wouldn't take it up as a long term hobby (it was a bit difficult for someone like I with weak upper-body strength + very low height!). However, I think if you plan on becoming a regular there, you can get a membership with them and the rate becomes even much more reasonable. There's plenty of free parking space to the back of this place, so parking is something that you would rarely have to worry. read more

I took my niece and nephew here to climb yesterday. I called the day before and asked if the climbing area was kid friendly for a 4 and a 6 year old and they said it was. Once we arrived, filled out all the waivers, they wanted $20 for a day pass for me to boulder and $30 for each of the kids! Granted they've never climbed before. No discounted kids price. Full price for them and all the gear rentals. I wasn't even sure if they'd like it but that doesn't matter to the staff there, at least not the girl at the front desk. But I haven't seen my niece and nephew in some time, so I decided to just pay the absurd price. As I get them on the wall to see if they can climb, they were struggling on the 5.5 route. Which was the easiest route. The slab wall, which normally has the easiest climbs in the gym was being reset that day. Wish the person on the phone would have said that to us the day before! Now I make a gripe to the girl at the front desk. She looked like she could not careless and just said "sorry" and nothing more. She just didn't seem pleasant to begin with so I wasn't surprised. Eventually someone came over and said they could refund the money but I said well we still wanted to climb and not leave. A discount on the gear rentals, reduced kid price, anything would have been nicer than saying okay just leave, and you wasted all day fighting traffic to get here for nothing. All in all, the kids still had fun because they are kids. They climbed half a boulder problem for 2 hours for $30 each. Thanks Stone Garden. read more

LOVED IT! If you're going to check it out, you should (okay, so you HAVE to) take the Climbing 101 Class. $50 gets you 2 1/2 hours of instruction, belay, knot tying, rock climbing fun! Extremely knowledgeable, thorough instruction.. In depth enough for the most novice climbers- ME. We learned how to tie knots, how to break, belay, command, how to climb, and it was awesome. Also cool- During the class, I commented on how good this one woman, in particular, was. Not yet knowing she was a pro, my instructor said, 'She's a famous climber, which is why the staff is very excited she is here..' I turned to the front desk and 4 sets of instructor eyes were glued to the woman, pointing and commenting. I'm tellin' ya, her back had more muscles than I thought possible. She really was like Spider(wo)man. More graceful than anything I've ever seen in real life. RAD. Go. You will fall in love with it like I did. PS- Parents- they host birthday parties.. and the kids were like 'McDonald's' in there.. LOVIN' it. read more

This was my first experience rock climbing. I am very bad at it. That's not to say I can't climb - the reality is that I thought the height was exciting and my muscles were barely tired. I suck at it because apparently if I grab a rock wrong with my right hand, I lose all feeling in my thumb and can't grip or squeeze anything for about 30 minutes. Still, the instructor here wasn't much help. We started on one of the more difficult walls outside, but were using the easier rocks/grips. I went first. I got about halfway up without any problems, but then suddenly realized I had nowhere to go. The only rocks above me were way to my left, and they were the "most difficult" ones, where there was barely room for your fingers. Getting to them at all would have been a challenge, and holding on even more so. So I yelled down to the guy, asking him where to go next. He responded with "I don't know, anywhere." I stood there, looked around, still found nothing. I keep holding on and holding on and holding on. He didn't help. He was just staring at the ground. So I decided to head down since I clearly wasn't getting anywhere. By the time I got down I looked up and still couldn't find where I was supposed to go. It was at this point I realized that the wall at the 90 degree angle wasn't a different climb - it was all part of the same climb. I was supposed to be using the side wall too, but the guy decided he didn't care enough to help. He was pretty much unfriendly to everyone in our group the entire time, and I had to be the one pointing out to people where to go while he stood there and did nothing. Also, the shoes here are disgusting. They smell like what people think the locker rooms at 24 hour fitness smell like, except more foul. They never spray the inside, so wear socks or expect some type of fungal growth. They also charged me an additional $16 because they were convinced my group needed to buy day passes in addition to the belaying pass. When they found out we had already paid, they didn't give me my money back. This place has a lot of potential, with a lot of places for bouldering and some really good rock walls, but this was still an abysmal service experience at an otherwise nice location. EDIT - While the experience above hasn't changed, Stone Gardens contacted me nicely about how they could make it better, so I've upped them by a star since the biggest problem was service, and that's good service. read more

Groups of people who go twice a week together = happy campers. People who are hard core = great training ground for the real deal. I totally want to be one of those people capable of carrying a drop mat on my back while hiking or camping and this is the place to get tips, practice and the sense of community. BUT! It smells like butt or stinky cheese toe cheese and zoze peoples seems too cliquey for me. For six months, I would go on my own and run into others I had seen before and they would pretend like we were awkward crushes from high school at a 10 year reunion. Nice, helpful staff. I'd borrow ponytails almost every visit and they gave suggestions on technique when face to face. Interesting people watching and serious core workout. This gym is quite old and in its days it probably was one of the best, but the bar is much higher today. Also they have very little space there. What I don't like about that place: * No changing/dressing rooms * No shower * Small variety in walls layout (mostly overhang/roofs) * Too much pinches and crimps, not enough slopers/volumes * Ridiculous route marking scheme (all route holds are of different color) * Top rope walls are not hight enough * Small parking lot And a show stopper for me: some holds are not tightened well enough so they rotate when you apply force to them. I have been going to Stone Gardens for a year and a half not and it really leaves me wanting. I think the problem is that there is no competition in this market yet so they just don't care to improve because, like myself, if you wanna climb it's your only option. My biggest problem here is the customer service. First of all, they seem to have trouble opening up on time and their hours are less impressive than every regular gym. The staff is SO unfriendly and so is the owner. I would climb here every day for 8 months and never did anyone get to know my name or smile at me. I would see the same staff members all week and they would never show any acknowledgement that they recognise me. I have been in the customer service industry my whole life and know how crucial it is to keep your customers happy. So, the final straw.... I live up north and I drive 20 minutes to get to the gym every day (which isn't convenient.) Yesterday I got to the gym and realized that I had left my shoes in my boyfriends car up north and I really didn't want to make the 40 minute drive home and back so I went inside and asked them if I could borrow a pair of the shoes that they rent. The woman behind the desk LAUGHED at me and told me "Umm, No!" with a very adamant headshake like I was insane. She made me feel so bad that I left the gym in tears. Fuming! I can't believe that I spend $65 a month on this membership. I really love how my body feels when I boulder which is the only reason I hadn't left yet but after this I'm done! I've had a couple of three month memberships here, as well as various day passes throughout the last year and a half. I like it here. Stone Gardens has a massive bouldering area - I've been to a few climbing facilities in different states and the bouldering here is the biggest. Overall the place is clean and friendly. Tons of routes of all difficulty settings, along with standard top roping and even auto-belay. I have two complaints that bring Stone Gardens down from 5 stars. First, the routes tend to fall into disrepair...there will be clearly missing holds, tape that gets pulled off, etc. Secondly, the parking is just awful. Drivers beware if you don't have an SUV and need to park in the back lot (which you will if you come anywhere near peak time, it gets busy fast). Its terrible back there. Overall, an enjoyable climbing experience for all skill levels. read more

Went here for the first time with a friend who hadn't top roped in about a year so he needed reminding on how to do the knots so he could take their belay test. The staff were rude and arrogant. I was told I wasn't allowed to give my friend any sort of instruction to refresh his memory and they couldn't or wouldn't help and he'd have to take a class (schedule one and pay). As I'd driven 30 minutes and just felt like climbing the only thing he really needed to remember was how to tie a knot so I attempted to show him. Another staff member told me that as I'd given him instruction he wouldn't be able to take the test or climb that day. I've been to about three different climbing gyms and have never had that experience. On another note the facilities and parking seemed fine. read more

Staff is unfriendly, sarcastic and hard to connect with. It's hard to get them to even crack a smile. Cleanliness of gym is less than desirable... I don't feel comfortable even walking barefoot or using gym equipment. Walls and mats should be cleaned monthly. The sinks in the bathroom are literally falling off the walls. Lacking a sense of climber community, would benefit from a public space for guests to hangout. There is a lack of traffic flow and gets uncomfortable at peak hours. Overall, not a terrible gym, but I definitely don't feel welcome or comfortable climbing here. Taking my business elsewhere. read more

This gym is rrrrrrraaaaad. Seriously, the building is all cool looking, the inside had insane-o bouldering and rope routes, and of course, the staff rocks (no pun intended...heh...). I actually gawked at this gym when I first walked in, the set up is that cool looking. And the bouldering has a lot of fun routes going all over the place. Just go to their website and you will probably see pictures of someone hanging from the lead climbing route that goes all the way up and outside wall and then on to the ceiling. I went in for the two hour bouldering class that gave helpful tips with that class you get a complementary two week membership. My complementary membership is almost over and I am most differently going to sign up again. I been climbing 6 times so far and think it's allot of fun and they always change the courses,so there is always a new course to do. The staff is friendly but it seems you have to earn the regulars respect but don't be shy if you see someone at the same level as you ask if you want to team up. Having climbing partners is allot of fun and it's good to have a second pair of eyes helping you. Dropped in with two climber friends to give rock climbing another shot, having only dabbled in the past. Kudos earned for having lots of climbing options for both bouldering and top roping, making renting equipment is a sinch, and having what seems like a very safe environment with crash pads on top of the already cushy floor. Despite a truly fun experience, there seems to be room for improvement on two aspects: pricing structure and service. Pricing involves an all-day price only (unless you're going to sign of for membership). I would've liked to see an evening rate (entry after 5PM, etc). I could see this resulting in crowded evenings... but it seemed a bit pricey at $15 before adding rental fees. Second, service leaves a bit to be desired for the uninitiated. Everyone is friendly but pretty hands-off, and I felt lucky to have a friend who could walk me through it as the front desk didn't really make an effort to fill me in on what's offered. If you come in with a date and haven't climbed before, you'll probably benefit from taking a starter class - of course, this will cost an extra $40 for two of you. I had a great time here but I have to largely chalk that up to going with two friends who knew what they were doing and were willing to work with a newbie. All told, probably top notch experience for climbers; if you're new, bring a friend who knows what they're doing. read more

WOW this is likely the best climbing gym I have been in to date!!! The staff was super friendly and helped us with any questions we had there. The gym is a good size with bouldering, top rope and lead available. They have various skill levels of routes represented here and plenty of them. I only climbed in the bouldering areas when we went here. They have so many routes available that I climbed non-stop for about 2-3 hours and never climbed the same route twice. It was a bit of a ego booster to be able to climb so many of the routes from V0-V5 levels and if I couldn't finish them at least I could climb parts of them. The setters make this gym very accessible to all levels of climbers which was great to see everything from totally beginners to expert climbers here. I also noticed so many warm individuals who would just openly talk to us and help out if we were having trouble on a route which other than my home gym is rare. If we go back to Seattle we will for sure go climbing here again. read more

Helps me keep my street cred as a PNW occupant. When I moved to Washington I said I wanted to take on new hobbies, but it took my move down to Seattle to jumpstart that process. Tried a couple different places to get started with climbing, and ended up really loving Stone Gardens. I go super early, and there aren't a whole lot of folks hanging out then. The problems change regularly (I boulder since I'm by myself), and there is a good variety of levels and types of problems to work on. I've tried to go in the evening and saw how popular the place is, so I stick with my early morning visits. Staff are friendly and helpful, and they host different groups and classes for different ages and levels of experience. I'm taking a class starting next week, and I'm so excited to continue to work out here. read more

I'm new to climbing, but Stone Gardens has been exactly what I'm looking for to get into the sport. First, we paid for an hour of pro belaying, meaning we got to climb while a Stone Gardens staff member did all the belaying work. The staff member was a really nice guy who was very informative, even though the class wasn't really geared toward instruction. I felt like I learned a lot in one hour and had a great time. Second, we tried the Adult Climbing 101 class which was 2.5 hours of instruction on how to use the ropes and gear and how to belay a partner. We had a different staff member teaching us, but she was also awesome, super knowledgeable and friendly. The facility seems clean, considering the high volume of sweaty dudes climbing all over the walls. It's a bit expensive to get started, but if you climb several times a week, it seems worth-while. read more

I love this place. First off, the people are cool. Second, rock climbing is so much fun. If you've never done it, than you really should try it. if you have done it, well then i'm preaching to the choir. Third, they tend to play good music there. When was the last time you went a gym and heard music you actually liked?? Fourth, you stay there till you are too tired to climb. Theres never any "i'm just sick of the gym" feeling. Fifth, it makes you feel good and get strong. Sixth, most of the people are beautiful. Many are in really really good shape- ripped, but not in a gross sort of way, more in a bad-ass hot sorta way. Seventh, when you start getting too tired to climb as much, watching beautiful people climb is really fun. Eighth, people help beginners out here. They don't act like snobs. Ninth, you'll feel like a ninja when you leave. Tenth, when you leave, if you want to, you have a ton of great places in the neighborhood to hang out. (hint - on friday nights, its pretty empty. They close at 10 pm. Go climbing, then go drinking... its fun). read more

Unfriendly, disinterested. Polar opposites to the other gym I visited. For once a place to work out and not feel like a piece of steak! There's a an instant group 'mantra' upon entering: "Just want to get through a 5 point......" . This is a great place to focus on yourself and get the job done and sweat and have fun! You can bring a belay buddy or self belay if you're in the mood! I'm getting hyper just thinking about it! I do however suggest investing in your own shoes if you don't have any. At least borrow from someone you know because the rental shoes are gross. Other then that; you're good to go! Something about how I'll cripple myself if I don't fix my knee, stat. Apparently climbing isn't so easy on them joints - who woulda thought? I miss you. I miss your ever changing routes. I miss your auto-belays. I miss your entertaining staff who never hesitate to laugh at me when I try something too hard and fall over and over and over and look like a fool. I miss your smell and your bouldering walls and your sort of gross floormats and the feeling that I get when I finally walk out the door which is that I am ALIVE. Like other reviewers said, the bouldering at this gym is awesome. Tons of spaces, and great variety in the routes and difficulty levels. Tons of overhangs. I've certainly seen taller rock walls, and at some points, I was definitely wishing for longer routes, but they change up the routes consistently which is a plus. Early morning is the time to climb (I've heard, but I've never been). Otherwise, in the evenings or weekends (when I've been), it can get a bit overwhelming with the number of people. The staff is always friendly and chill, though not always the most proactively-helpful. read more

Awesome place. HUGE bouldering (!) and lead/belay climbing areas; they also have those automatic rope things for solo belay climbing (yeah, I don't really belay climb, but they look cool). You really just have to go to the website and check out their panoramic tour. They even have an outdoor section that looks like it goes up about thee stories high. Looking forward to the summer! The routes here change fairly frequently, which can be a good and a bad thing depending on how often you come. Don't count on a route being there for months for you to work on solving it unless it's a favorite. At the same time, if you come in frequently it still feels like every time you come in there are new routes for you. Cons about this place: - The music is sometimes too mellow or out there. This is personal preference of course, but I would hope for something faster paced to pump me (and all the other climbers) up. Sometimes it's just depressing, and it certainly doesn't help when I fail to solve a problem. - It can get pretty crowded. Note that Tues-Thurs nights seem to be the busiest nights. Friday and Saturday night is pretty empty. - Ratings can be a tad inconsistent w.r.t scale. - Parking in the back lot is the stuff of off-roading SUV commercials, except I have a FWD coupe. Not that you could fit an SUV through the gap between the cars and the railroad track anyway. Nothing you can't just suck up and deal with. This place is great, and I've never met a person who didn't have fun rock climbing (who has tried it). Go already! (Then get a pair of used shoes and a used chalk back from nearby Second Ascent and go again :) read more

I'll admit, I hate going to the gym. I just feel like a hamster. Running mindlessly on a treadmill or peddling mindlessly on a bike. Something about gyms turn me off because I feel like I am not really interacting with anything. In my opinion, Stone Gardens really changed the way people think about going to a "gym" and working out. When I first got here, there was a bit of a stench. It just kind of smelled like sweat, but that actually went away quickly. Yay sensory adaptation! Anyways, I got in for free cause it was my first time going with a member. It is a good way to test the place out. Otherwise it is about $16 and then you have to rent special shoes for $4? It was a very challenging way to work out, yet really engaging and rewarding. When I finally land the climb or reach the top, I feel very satisfied with my success and only more determined to get the next one down. On one wall, there is so many ways to climb it. There are levels ranging from easy beginner to very difficult. What I like best is that you may be on the same wall, but there are about 8+ ways to climb it per section. I also hear that they change it up every month so the possibilities are endless! I recommend this place for people like me, who love being active, but hate the gym. read more

My husband and I went here as our 2yr anniversary adventure since we had never been here & haven't rocked climbed in so long. It's a lot bigger than I expected & definitely a lot harder than I remembered, heh. It is just a little on the pricey side, but at the same time I think they're pretty cheap for the simple fact that it's a standard rate but you can stay there the whole day or leave and come back on the same day and not have to pay again. We did it all our on since you need to pass a test to go on the other side where the walls are a lot higher. This is by far the best climbing gym in the city (and probably in the state). I've been a memebr here for almost a year, and it's well worth it. Plus, if you pay for the whole year up front, you get a huge discount. And like Rohan said, as long as you're a member, you can bring a friend in for free (as long as it's their first visit). Nice facility with lots of options for bouldering. They put up new problems after they've been there for month, so there's always something new to try! I like to come in weekday mornings (or at least before 3) if possible to beat the crowds. It seems to be the worst on weekday nights. Monthly memberships are worth it if you come more than 4 times a month! read more
