I had a smooth check-in process with British Airways. Then had to wait around and look at the Duty Free shops as gates were not announced until closer to boarding time. This gave me time to see that you could fill out a quiz and get a free biscuit. Something gained at least. After my gate was announced, it was a mad rush to the gate as they started boarding. I wish they would announce the gate sooner allowing time to relax at the gate. Just a matter of preference but that's not how they do it there. read more

I also traveled there during the holidays so the airport security line was crowded. I didn't see too many food options. But renovations seem to be in the works. We caught a late-night flight to Dublin, and everything went really smoothly. There was no rush at check-in--actually, the place was almost empty. Getting to the airport from the city center was super easy too. Just hop on bus #100 and you're there--simple as that. The same goes for getting into the city from the airport. There are three airport buses: the Airlink 100, and the Skylink 200 and 400. But the Airlink 100 is the one to go for--it takes you straight to the city center. On the map, its stop is marked as the green "A." This airport serves around 14.7 million passengers a year and takes pride in being the place "where Scotland meets the world." It offers all the modern amenities you'd expect--lounges, currency exchange, prayer rooms, and more. Trolleys are easy to find too, with collection points all around the airport campus. Since it was so late, all the shops were closed, so we didn't get a chance to check out the food or do any shopping. Security was quick and getting to the gate was a breeze--it's not a huge airport. It was a Ryanair flight, so there was no jet bridge--we had to walk to the plane, which was a bit unusual for us. read more

Great airport due it's small size. We are now leaving Scotland and on our short flight back to London, then a long nine hour decent to our homeland of Miami. Love that the taxi drops you at the front curb then the luggage drop off was quick and painless. Everyone so far has been happy and friendly, which seems to be a Scottish trait. Lots of higher-end eateries, cafes and nice retail stores including a Duty Free, scattered throughout the airport. Plenty of bathrooms, although the women's bathrooms were slammed with long lines - tiny bladders are a concern in most airports. Grabbing my last beer in Scotland at the Brewdog and getting ready to board my flight for a safe flight. read more

Edinburgh airport is an ok airport that gets the job done. It's a bit dated and smallish. We landed after a direct overnight flight and arrived on a Thursday morning at 8:30am. The airport was quiet and subdued and it eerily felt like a holiday. I'm not sure if it's always like this but it just felt like the local economy might be depressed. Anyway, the good thing is immigration was quick as we were the only plane load to be processed and they use scanners for passport control so there was really no human interaction. Luggage came out speedily as well. There wasn't much walking to our ride either. Overall, ok experience but don't expect a vibrant or bustling scene. read more

The EDI airport is very basic and almost does not feel like an international airport. It feels old, cramped and disorganized. It also struggles with passenger volumes. That said there is easy access to downtown via bus or light rail. There are some eating options. read more

It's a smaller airport but it wasn't super busy and everything was pretty easy to find, including restaurants and the duty free shops. It was also pretty clean. Ryan Air has the worst communication I've experienced since ATA Air, which is no longer in operation. Website doesn't work. Then they charge extra for not checking in online. Then they charge extra for checking bags they tell you won't fit (except when you finally ever get on the plane) you realize they really would easily fit. Then they have a delay (which happens) but don't tell you anything but just keep you standing at the gate in queue for an "on time" departure which is one hour late. Then onto the walkway to the tarmac, only to stand in queue again for 20 minutes while they deplane and clean). I predict they'll be out of business soon. read more

Probably my least favourite Scottish airport. Check in is crowded and oppressive, there aren't enough toilets once through security, and the whole complex is badly laid out and desperately needs a rethink. The only good thing about it is the frequent Airline bus back to Glasgow. read more

Edinburgh Airport is a little quirky. When we landed, we walked out of the plane to board a shuttle. The shuttle was tightly packed with them telling people to keep squishing and make space (there was no space). For somewhere that rains all the time, it's a little inconvenient to have to go outside after your flight, get soaked, then cram into a shuttle, then go back outside to walk towards the customs and baggage area. Bags were quick and once there, it wasn't hard to navigate because of the size of this airport. However, if you need to get to the rental car center, it's a little walk. There are a lot of convenient options to take public transit to get into the city and its not far from the airport, which is great! read more

Landing at this airport was ok. For some reason they didn't give us a gate so we parked a ways away and got onto a single bus they provided. And yes, the whole plane had to fit on that bus. It was extremely claustrophobic but at least the ride was short. We were taking an Uber to our hotel on the Royal Mile and it's quite the trek. I wouldn't recommend calling the Uber until you are outside. Then, there are signs to the pick up spot but in all honesty, these signs will turn you around. I'm normally great with directions, apparently not at this airport. Leaving from this airport was a bit easier. There is an Uber drop off but it's very close to the check in area. We waited in line and the BA staff was very friendly and courteous. Security here is a trip. I've never experienced such a strict liquids policy since NYC 2001. Maybe it's because I've done mostly domestic travel since the pandemic but I cannot remember the last time I travelled internationally where they really enforced the 1 clear quart bag. I had two, they were both filled with souvenir bottles of gin we can't get in America. Thank goodness my partner didn't have a clear baggy so the guy let him have it instead of throwing it out. But be warned... if it doesn't fit in *THEIR* plastic baggy, it goes in the trash. There is limited seating here but we waited by Pret until our gate had a number. I'm usually a fan of smaller airports, I'm not sure if this one has me... yet. read more

Very clean airport with clean restrooms, friendly staff, and cashless options. Ordering at the restaurant was effortless as we utilized the QR code and were able to pay with Apple Pay. Such a convenient way to eat on the fly. Pun intended. We dined at Hudson Street Grill. I ordered a double macchiato with oat milk and a side of crisp chips aka French fries. My macchiato was served piping hot as were the chips. Moreover, the chips were crisp as promised. My friend ordered a burger and chips. She said it was great and it appeared to be from the looks of it. If ever at EDI again, I would visit here for a meal. Finally, I was able to purchase some smart souvenirs at an affordable rate at Heritage of Scotland. This was a great last minute spot to score some gifts for both me and my loved ones. We ended our 2 week European vacation with a 3 leg flight back to Reno... Our first was from Edinburgh to Heathrow. First let me mention we had flights with American and British Airways for this trip. They are supposedly partners... We started off arriving in London. We had never been to Scotland so that's why we ended up flying home from there. The first leg of our trip was B.A to London then London to Dallas then Dallas to Reno. I do not recommend this unless you can sleep semi-reclined. Anyway our last leg was American. When we tried to check in at Edinburg there was some mix-up with the miles I used for this entire trip. We needed to get ahold of AA and get this sorted. Our cell carrier is Verizon mostly because are old service didn't work in our home. We couldn't connect to AA as many times as we tried. I suggested calling my daughter Kiley who is brilliant and could help us with this. She put Joe on a 3 way conference call and things got sorted. Thank God we always get to the airport early or it would have been misery. And you cannot buy tickets anywhere on the premises. I did a small bit of research about this airport and some folks have said they buy a cheap burner with the service that Edinburg provides. Just a major heads up for anyone traveling there from other countries. To be fair the ladies from B.A. were lovely as I was starting to tear up. We made it back to Reno and we smelled smoke the minute the jet touched down. Wow this is just awful and so unhealthy :( read more

Personally, I like this airport. "Where Scotland meets the world." Some quirks: 1. At least this is true flying to and from Dublin, when you arrive/depart at Edinburgh Airport you'll likely need to take a shuttle from your gate to your airplane (and vice versa). The shuttles are small, and they try to get everyone on your plane into one (sometimes two). It's a little frantic, everyone shoving their way in then out again, but remember: you're literally all going to the same destination (either your gate or your plane). 2. Security is chaos. There's a lot of people, the queues can be confusing, and the agents are constantly yelling over all the noise. However: it's organized chaos! I'm never allowed to stay with my party unlike other airports. They divide us up into whatever line they want and it can be lines that are nowhere near each other (if this happens to you, my advice is to just wait for your friends/family by the tables in the back). It's the usual situation: shoes off, belts off, jackets off, etc. Personally, I've never once had an issue with my liquids bag - it's the same quart sized Ziploc I use everywhere I go (and is required at every airport flying in/out of the US, so I'm not sure why there's so many remarks from Americans in these reviews saying it was confusing). 3. Every time I've flown from Edinburgh to Dublin my flight has been delayed between one and three hours. It's usually weather related. 4. Somehow my carry-on luggage is never allowed because I'm always taking a regional jet so I'm obligated to check my duffle bag on. This isn't really EDI's fault, but something maybe you want a heads-up on (you'll likely only be allowed only your one personal item depending on size; sometimes they even reject backpacks). Some charms: 1. You can see a live update of how long the wait time in the security hall is on their website! 2. Every time I've been here, I've been able to sit in the sunny courtyard-like lounge area where there's a piano for anyone to play - I've heard some beautiful music! It's a nice place to sit and enjoy a little snack before your flight (...which will probably be delayed). 3. Because it's a smaller airport, it's *incredibly easy* to navigate (Gates 1 through 16 are in the "main" area; gates 17 through 29 are down a corridor away from all the shops and restaurants). Plenty of clean bathrooms too! 4. Almost all the restaurants are plant-based friendly! ABSOLUTELY SKIP BARBURRITO. But visit Fever Tree for avocado toast and an incredible cocktail (you can drink whenever you want in an airport... right?), Pret A Manger (my absolute go to when traveling) for an iced americano with soya and a mediterranean mezze salad salad, Burger King for the Vegan Royale and fries (don't judge me). New worst airport crown awarded here! 1. The departures arrival area is a mess of people staring at screens with individual desk numbers. It was 5 minutes past when our flights desk should've been assigned and it still wasn't up, so someone shouted at us to go to British Airlines. 2. BA line only had 3 people working and took FOREVER to check in. 3. Had to heave my own bags on the baggage loader conveyor belt - never had to do that before. 4. Waded our way through the maze to go upstairs to security. This is an international airport supposedly, but does not participate in Global Entry/TSA Precheck. We had to go through the regular security line, which was fine except the machines that required you to scan a paper boarding pass (like it's 1998!) would just randomly turn red and not work for several minutes at a time. Fun. 5. More Scottish shouting to remove all liquids - which, as travelers who have paid for Global Entry/Precheck, we haven't done in years and weren't prepared. My husband was frantically trying to pull the liquids out of various places we'd packed them in our carry on bags while shuffling forward. The flimsy bags they provide to put them in wouldn't open and ripped. Right as we got to the front of the security line, there's a giant sign that say, "LEAVE EVERYTHING IN YOUR BAG INCLUDING LIQUIDS." So, that's nice. They like to keep you on your toes! 6. The bins to load your security xray items are hidden from view and the unhelpful Scottish shouting was unintelligible as to where to find them. Hint: look down by your feet. 7. My paper boarding pass from 1998 that the angry Scottish woman told me to put in the bin did not make it through the X-Ray machine. Had to get security staff to help - and got elbowed in the face by an American teenager because the post-Xray area is tiny, cramped, dirty, and generally ill-suited for the purpose to which is is supposed to fulfill. 8. Post-Security (my paper boarding pass from 1998 safely retrieved from what I can only imagine are cogs run by hamsters), you have to slog through a Duty Free Shopping mall that STINKS like all the perfume samples at a trashy mall. Gross. 9. Wearily, we headed for Starbucks for a much needed coffee & bite to eat after this ordeal. Waited in the long queue. The only breakfast options this Starbucks has are cold. They don't have any hot things at all. Sigh! It's probably a nice enough airport if you are flying INTO Scotland, and for sure conveniently located if you're going to the Highlands... but ugh! What a SLOG! Also: this is the dirtiest airport I've been to in years. Floors sticky and black, trash everywhere, unfinished walls and ceilings in place (but with no clean/new construction feeling?)... it's just gross. read more

Edinburgh Airport was my portal into the magical realm of Scotland when I visited the country in July 2019 for heritage travel (plus looking at geological outcrops!). It felt like home as soon as I landed, everything was clearly marked and gates were easy to find. I took a taxi to where I was staying the first night, and the taxi-catching area was clearly set-up. I returned the following day to get my rental car, a stick shift which turned out to be an experience of its own as all of the cars I drove growing up were automatic. The rental car was located about a 10 minute walk from the main building, but was easy to find. All the workers in the airport and rental car area were friendly and helpful. When returning to the United States of America approximately 14 days later, the airline I was flying, Air France, was having some technological difficulties. Then one of the airline workers asked those of us heading to France/Paris to see her, so me and some of the other people got out of line, then she told us never mind. By the time I got all checked in (self check-in kiosks were not working and computers were glitchy with only a few desk workers) it was about 20 minutes before my flight was to depart. I still had not made it through security. At that point, as I was making my way to security, I got a military escort - related to my work in nuclear physics. The security itself was a breeze, no hassle and fast. I sped-walked to my gate as fast as I could to catch the tram to the airplane and made it last call as one of the last people. While my interactions with Air France were stressful, the airport was on-point and functioned perfectly, helping me catch my flight on-time. Thankful I chose to fly through this Scotland gateway for my trip, made for a peaceful arrival and departure. read more

This airport isn't very large, so you might expect to get through lines quickly and efficiently. However, that was not our experience, although we did have one gentleman who passed us through a very long line since they would be boarding our flight in an hour. Once we got our bags tagged, we had to find our way behind the check baggage desks to put them on a conveyor belt, which was unusual. Most places I've traveled through take the bags once you get them tagged for being checked. The one upright sign toward bag drop off was blocked by a line of people and the rest of the signs were on the floor pointing in no particular direction. We got upstairs to go through customs and there was absolute chaos. They shout direction at you and point in such rapid succession, it was so stressful. The attendant directing is told my husband to get into line #1 where he would put his bag into a bin, but when I approached she simply told me to keep everything in my bag. I stood in line two since it seemed to be open, but we were unclear if we needed to remove our shoes or not. There was a plaque that said to keep items in bags, but if you were wearing heals or boots then you should remove your shoes. We were both wearing sneakers so we kept them on. The next part of getting through the body scanner and collecting bags felt like a relay race. The area bottle necked as people tried to gather their things and for some reason there was a line blocking the exit to the area. The taxi dropoff is 3 million miles away from departure/ticketing. My post 100 mile hike/walk did not appreciate. Yes, we hiked the West Highland Way. There is almost zero organization, rhyme or reason to their security. This is a small international airport but I expected better organized security. We were basically corralled into these automatic gates that sound off loud and shocking alarms. Apparently if you lean on walls there are also alarms that sound. It was shocking to say the least. Once through the corrall of the automatic gates where you scan your own boarding pass, things start to pick up. Don't forget to get your liquids into a small Ziploc or else you'll wait even longer for then to inspect your lugguage. Plenty of duty free shopping, stores, and places to eat. I liked that they had a baby grand in one of the areas where anyone could tickle the ivory keys. Didn't have a good experience here. But we made it on our flight so that's what counts! read more

So used to LAX that we often give ourselves 3-4 hours before departure. This time around 2 hours was fine. What can I say? It's a decent airport. The best part about it is that it has a wide range of international flights including an nonstop flight to/from Washington, DC, which makes it much easier for us to get to Scotland from home, which we love. It's got about the normal array decent, but not amazing food options and ton of mediocre shops. read more

With so many transportation options to and from and a comprehensive number of domestic and international destinations, this capital city airport should be my favorite. Mediocre and uninspiring architecture and design, and at times seemingly incredibly confusing or outright missing signage make for an apparently frustrating experience unfortunately. Security seemed to offer no sign posted instructions what to take out of the carry on bag and how to organize the tray except for very fast moving "video" sign. I'm sorry, but how can airport management expect every passenger to be as mentally alert as they must have been when they came up with the idea? It seemed Edinburgh might be a better option than Glasgow as an entry point to Scotland. Considering the shopping and food options are pretty similar (decent but certainly not overwhelming) It doesn't seem EDI wants to be. read more

Nice airport with lots of outside construction. If you Uber here, you have to be dropped off by the parking area, so you will have to walk with all your bags to the entrance. The walk was about a block and a half. Something to keep in mind if you have children or a lot of luggage. I was able to easily check my bag. The security line was quick. I was able to get through security at 8am in about 20 minutes. Their duty free has an okay selection, but the different whiskys are overpriced. One trip to Edinburgh Airport and you will never return to Edinburgh. Filthy, packed, badly laid out, insane security protocols (watch out, they'll take your makeup. It's a liquid, right? NO.) Sullen airport personnel. Actually If I worked there I'd be sullen too. No place to sit at the gates, no jetways (Easy Jet), tarmac walk and metal stair ascent in the rain. Can't get much worse IMO.
