More expensive, not by that much, First Bus Company are really pushing it! If I was paying more, I would expect a more direct route than other services, better conditioned buses, bus services which are on time (Very annoying!) and cheery bus drivers. I got none of these things, the bus was late, I was worried that the double decker First bus was going to break down and the bus driver didn't even let me try and sit down before he stormed off! People of Edinburgh, just stick with Lothian buses, they convenient, mostly on time and cost less than First Buses!

Even if it's raining you can finish your shopping in the mall and get straight onto a bus without getting wet. If you find there's a wait till the bus you want, it's no bother going back to do some more shopping in the meantime (for a woman anyway!!) The drivers all seem very pleasant and the buses are clean and well looked after. The buses don't always run to time very well and there can be a bit of a wait. My only other gripe is that they sometimes come into a different number of stand to what you expect, so, even if you'd been at the front of the queue, by the time you rush over to where the bus has stopped you might find yourself at the end of one!! There is an undercover waiting area with seats and several electronic departure information screens which are very useful. There's a nearby newsagent just inside the mall which sells snacks and drinks. Kilmarnock is a fantastic 'hub' with buses going to other towns and villages in all directions. I particularly like the quick service to Glasgow from here but the one I use most is the one which takes me home, if I have too much shopping to walk back.

The buses are modern and comfortable and all buses have a buggy bus and disabled access. Another great feature is that the bus driver gives you change instead of putting the bus fare into a little box and you pay the exact amount unlike other bus companies. They also supply luxury buses for functions and the service they provide is great.

There's no attempt at any artistic merit at the platform level; however that is redeemed largely by the fantastic Alasdair Gray mural on the entrance concourse wall. I feel they have missed a trick with the refurbishment by not taking the opportunity to install LED lighting and incorporate more design elements on the platforms. It's hard to maintain the sense of individuality that the stations used to have when they are all bright white tiles. Some design motifs would have helped, and with LED lighting they would not only be more eco-friendly, they could change the mood of the lighting to suit the occasion. The best it can be described as is functional and utilitarian. But I do love the mural upstairs.

For me, the Hillhead subway station is pretty ideal. It has both staffed and self-service ticket…read moresales points and it has plenty of space in the main entrance and six turnstiles for its hundreds of customers - Hillhead is one of the busiest subway stops in the city. It also has that cool Alastair Grey tiled mural and a coffee shop. This stop is especially handy for Byres Road, the Botanic Gardens and the University of Glasgow which goes some way to explaining why its one of the busier stops on the Clockwork Orange. It's definitely a bit crowded at peak times but the regular rate of trains passing through mean that this isn't normally an issue. It has just reopened following works to modernise the subway in (summer 2016). However, since these works were necessary for sections of track at the depot, rather than for the stations themselves, it looks more or less the same as it did before.

There's a staffed ticket office but there are machines to buy tickets from as well. The station also has bike racks, a small car park, a coffee kiosk, waiting rooms and free WiFi via the Cloud. You can reach Milngavie centre via an underpass just outside the station. Also right outside the station is a small but pretty little square with a couple of benches - possibly a nicer place to sit in sunny weather. It's a well kept station with baskets of flowers and plants around and is apparently a grade B listed building.

One of the slicker stations offered on the local line, Milngavie is well maintained and relatively…read moreaesthetically pleasing. Unsurprising, I guess, given the affluence of the area. With an elaborately decorated underpass leading into the town centre, it's a nice way to welcome the abudance of visitors the town gets who are preparing to start the West Highland Way. Indeed, it gets an extra star for the provision of bike lockers, which is obviously particularly handy in this location.

The train station in North Queensferry is the last station in Fife before you travel over the Forth…read moreRail Bridge. This small station is located at the higher end of North Queensferry and proudly stands over the rest of this coastal town. And it is its position which make the station standout on the rail route towards Edinburgh. With great views of the city of Edinburgh and its surrounding areas, tourists flock here with their cameras. Furthermore, this station is used, along with Dalmeny as a hop off and on station for crossing the Forth Rail Bridge. The station is small and is set in the Victorian mould with the main building and bridge. One of the walls at the station has been decorated by local school children with an image of the iconic bridge and the Firth of Forth. As a frequent train traveller I have formed an admiration for these small, old stations which almost look out of place in our villages and towns. However, North Queensferry train station certainly adds some character to the place and is well worth a visit for train station enthusiasts!

Situated just outside Inverkeithing and just off the A90 is Ferrytoll park and ride. This park and ride service allows users to park their cars in a secure car park and get a bus through to Edinburgh. The bus service is mainly run by Stagecoach, and the services in the morning and evening are very busy! However, the prices are not bad at all, and are cheaper than going via train! I have only used it a couple of times and I found the service quite fast and only took around twenty minutes to get into the centre of Edinburgh. From Edinburgh you can get buses back from the bus station or George Street. A great service by all accounts and a great way to get cars of the road in Edinburgh!
